Feb 6-12, 2017

It was an off week for our normal Light/Short game group in Paris, so I attempted to join more French gamers in the Joueurs Anonyme group for a bonus night. A month or so ago I tried this on my own, and ended up in a playtest of a long game. This time I went with my wife and two more friends, and we ended up playing the same sort of light/short games. That was great, too. Even better was the fact that a French player recognized us from another night, and got us involved in a game right away. Very friendly.

A wonderful experience. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is my grudging admission that the game does take a little longer than everyone else seems to want. I love it as-is.

First of all, we played with a French set, at a French group, with a French player, and (mostly) in French. Of the five players, only two of us really speak French with any fluency, so for the rest of us it was an adventure. Though we didn't all know the language, we knew the GAME, and that helped limit & focus our communication. We got through it, and it was super fun. When Lucille hesitated on my offered trade and said, "Un plus?" I knew she was pressuring me to offer a second card! Later she was scolding me for making too generous of a deal to another player. It was really great, because it was so familiar in terms of gameplay, despite the different language.

P.S. It made me smile when one of the younger (in his 20s?) French players looked at the box and was surprised to see designer Uwe Rosenberg, who he only knew from the likes of Agricola or Caverna. Then he was even more surprised when I told him I'd been playing Bohnanza for twenty years already! (21, actually...)

We played this a month or two ago, as well. Though I don't like social deduction games, this one is circumscribed enough by the rules and incomplete information to keep it from being pure bluffing/lying. So it's easier for me to enjoy.

Another solid filler. I didn't know this one from a few years ago, and was told it's quite popular in France. It's got a good combination of light play, simple rules, sensible scoring, and enough randomness to keep casual players in the mix.
