The usual geeklist where I can record the games I play for the next podcast episode, others I won't make it to (but are interesting to consider), and so on.

My schedule was thrown off by last "month's" challenging topic. I'm not yet certain how long the next episode will take me, though I'm aiming for just four weeks, to get back on-track. Living in modern Paris, the 100YW is distant in time, but not so far on the map. I had the chance to go to the Loire valley, where Joan of Arc campaigned. I'd like to go visit Crécy and Agincourt, as well, but may not get the opportunity. We'll see.

P.S. So much for "one book, one movie, one game" huh?

I've owned this for some time, linking back to when I learned that the battle location of Formigny "overlaps" Omaha Beach. Not the beach itself, but quite nearby. I've heard that travelers visiting the famous WW2 sites sometimes stumble across the monument for Formigny and are perplexed what it's doing there. Well, this part of the world is prime territory for invading armies of either side, and the defenders that would throw them back.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Formigny

There's a lot to like in this small pair of magazine games. A common ruleset (that applies to other issue games, too) which does a good job of emphasizing small unit actions and the importance of local leaders. That part works without much fuss, and gives the game some interesting tactical distinction. Once we get to the scale where facing matters I tend to shy away, but here it works well enough. Prohibiting stacking (except for leaders) helps the playability. Most of all, just having a treatment of an interesting, under-gamed battle is a big advantage. I'm speaking of Formigny here--I know there are a number of Poitiers games.

These two battles make an interesting pairing, too. They "bookend" the entire Hundred Years War. In both of them, a mismatch in ranged combat units is the dominant tactical consideration. At Poitiers it's the English (Gascon) with their longbows, even though they aren't as overwhelming as at Crecy or Agincourt. Then at Formigny those same longbows are outmatched(?) or at least outranged by early artillery on the French side. The English have to come out from behind their pickets to take out those guns...and that's about when the French reinforcements (who rode to the sound of those same guns) appear on the English left flank.

That all sounds great, but there's a drawback. The combat system is clunky. This isn't a new game, but that's no excuse for too many lookup tables and endless die roll modifiers. They aren't too bad by the standards of some games, but the rest of THIS ruleset is nimble and almost elegant. The combat rules really get in the way of that elegance, which is too bad.

I still had a great time just drinking in the simple map, those wonderful Vae Victis counters, setting up the OOB, and playing through several turns until the combat system did me in.

This one is actually a second, mini game that's within Vae Victis 30. It's a very small game that may be of a scale & scope that's perfect for me. I'm hopeful. It's one of the only games I found that concentrates on Joan's Loire campaign.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loire_Campaign_(1429)

Might deserve four stars for being a light, interesting treatment at the right scale/scope for me. But I'm getting a little worn out by PNP games or these early Vae Victis titles that require me to mount the counters myself. That shouldn't REALLY be a serious strike against, and once upon a time I kind of enjoyed the relaxing craftwork of it. Now, though, my work has gotten busy and I just wish I had more games that were ready-to-play. I'm sure I'll swing back to PNP in the future. It opens up many more choices.

As for the game, I solo'd it, which takes a little away from the interesting event chit system to add drama. My French forces got stomped in a hurry, losing Orleans early and then the game. I see now that they should spend a few turns building up a defense (especially of that linchpin, Orleans), waiting for Joan to arrive and turn the tide.

Once again, I'm not a naval wargamer. Yet some reading about the earliest stages of the long war--especially what set up the Battle of Crécy--led me to learning about the Battle of Sluys. When I found an affordable magazine wargame about it, I quickly sent my money...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sluys

I'll say up front that I didn't give this game a fair shake. I got it all set up, played a few turns, then packed it back up. I do this sometimes when I see that I've already learned a lot from the OOB, the map, the setup, and--especially--the accompanying magazine articles...but don't look forward to churning through the execution of the game. I have a low tolerance for wargames that work their way through a lot of process steps (think flowchart) and die roll modifiers. I DO realize that this hobby is built upon that foundation, but my preference are for wargames that sacrifice some of that in preference to more nimble gameplay. To each his own. I still enjoyed my experience with this game, even if it wasn't one of playing it through.

I'm actually trying NOT to concentrate too much on Agincourt, since I think it's a battle that already gets plenty of attention. Nonethless, it's that famous for a reason, and there's still a chance I'll get to visit the battlefield. This light wargame (& system) on the subject caught my attention a little while ago, and it was easy to obtain a PNP version through WargameVault.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Agincourt

Note that I played Ancients not We Happy Few (not yet). Although this is a famous battle, it's not necessarily a good one for a game. The French have overwhelming force, but the constraints of the scenario make it a "turkey shoot" for the English. The English barely even MOVE at this scale & treatment--they just roll dice to decimate the charging French with longbows, plus a few more to finish them off. The French invariably fail a command roll (only 1/3rd chance of success), which forces them to charge forward to their doom. Even if they were to maintain control, the constraints of the battlefield (the famous channeling effect of the woods on either side) don't give room for tactical alternatives. Such as to swing around the English and attack from a better direction.

I've got a funny history with Ancients. I recently played it (or a slight variant) as part of the Alesia episode, and really appreciated it. Too bad I sold my 3W black box combined Ancients I and Ancients II set long ago. It was unpunched, and before my wargame renaissance. Alas. Now I can PNP just about anything from the original game, but I decided to re-acquire that set when a copy came up on Consimworld. (Purchased from designer Brian Train, no less, who designed ¡Arriba España! from my previous episode!) Then VPG announced their New Year's sale at the start of 2017, and I found myself ordering the new edition of the game. So I went from 1 copy of the game, to zero, to two copies! If I play it while living in France, I'll be using none of these since they're home in California. I'll have to rely on PNP.

It's a wargame system & kit that can cover many battles. In this case, I'm using it for the Battle of Crécy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cr%C3%A9cy

In my photo, I'm looking from the top of the hill, down toward the field the French charged up. Edward's point of view.

Like Agincourt, this isn't a great game situation. The French fail their command roll, charge forward (over their allied Genoese crossbowmen), and get riddled with English longbows. Yeah, that was the history, and this shows it well enough. The advantageous hill that Edward chose for the English troops, too. I didn't try this, but it would be interesting to play without the "impetuous French nobility" constraint. Unlike at Agincourt, here there's theoretically more room for French maneuver, where their greater strength should be able to overwhelm Edward's forces. You're still up against that hill and murderous longbows, but the English force is small, and after some French losses it should collapse. Which shows how history might have played out differently.

The scale & scope of the game probably isn't best for me, but a magazine wargame about the Black Prince is otherwise right up my alley. I'm kind of surprised I didn't buy it. Maybe I couldn't find an inexpensive one in France, or maybe I finally showed some restraint. Either way, I'll use my electronic subscription to S&T to read the article, at least.

Great collection of scenarios, but I think I already played a very similar game system from the same designer (when I was covering the English Civil War), and I didn't like it. Didn't like 3W's dated & uninspired graphics, either.

Oh! I didn't even know about this until I did a search here on BGG. Even though I like light games, I'm not a huge fan of the C&C system (it's the wide & shallow maps that bother me), and generally discount Battlelore as being filled with Tolkien-esque characters & creatures. This might be different, though.
