"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Triassic Terror - 1 play
Dust Level: 1 year, 11 months, 0 days
I love this game. I had a chance to play a 5P game at the recent PretzCon game day. Everyone I played it with loved it too. There are few things more fun than area control with dinosaurs.

Super Tooth - 3 plays
Dust Level: 1 year, 9 months, 1 day
Tried this with my two-year-old this previous month and he loved it! He wants to play it every day now. He loves dinosaurs and I do too, so it's a good fit for both of us. He's really good at it too and remains undefeated in our matches!

Monster Factory - 1 play
Dust Level: 1 year, 5 months, 4 days
Another game we tried out with the two-year-old. This one ran a little long for him, but not by much. He did pretty well matching up the monster pieces too.

Cardline: Animals - 1 play
Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 11 days
He needed some supervision and choices on where to put the animals, but the two-year-old was introduced to this one too in March.

Terra - 1 play
Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 3 days
I bought this awhile ago when it was on crazy sale at CSI and it shipped this month with a pre-order that was finally fulfilled. I prefer the other entries to the series, but for this price it's a welcome addition to the collection. It was easy to get to the table right away with the wife, who hadn't played this particular iteration before.

Ticket to Ride: Europe - 2 plays
Dust Level: 1 year, 1 month, 6 days
My wife and I are going through a Ticket to Ride marathon of all the standalone sets and then all of the expansions. Europe got out of the dust this way. I prefer the greater tension of the USA map compared between the two, but different maps are always welcome for the sake of variety if nothing else.

Dino Race - 1 play
Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 12 days
Another game we dusted off to play with the two-year-old. Do you notice the dinosaur theme? I'm a big fan. It's my favorite all-time theme, so of course there is an inordinate amount of games I've picked up for the boys over the years with that theme as well. Funny story about this one - after going through the effort of replacing a missing dinosaur figure with Ares Games, I found it. So now I have an extra green guy. That's convenient for the two-year-old since he likes to play with the game pieces during a game as much as actually use them.

Imperial Settlers - 4 plays
Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 17 days
Dusted off Imperial Settlers to run a splash event for the new Aztec expansion. After four games of getting the new rules wrong, I think I've finally got it figured out. I love Ignacy as a designer, but there tends to be a lot of vagueness and uncertainty in his rulebooks. In any event, the Aztecs are cool and their new tokens are fun for all the races. Nice addition to the game!

I really like the idea behind this game, and most of the mechanisms, however I dislike the confrontational aspect to the game by attacking each other with fighters and bombers. We don't own the game but have a close friend, Heto who does but it's clearly been too long since we last played it.

Another game that we don't own, but Heto does. This is a fun little push yer luck game with an element of programming a la Roborally.

Thanks for picking up the mantle of the Out of the Dust geeklists! I have three games to report on for March:

King's Breakfast - 1 play
First Published 2003
12 years, 0 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  6

Joe Huber was on a rampage, trying to get his H-index to 50 before he turns 50. One of the games he needed to get 50 plays of is this little card game. I enjoy a lot of games of this general nature, but I hadn't played this since I played it 4 times back in 2005. This play confirmed my impression from back then; it's okay, but not something I'd ask for on my own account.

Nippon Rails - 1 play
First Published 1992
5 years, 2 months, 10 days
Current Rating -  7

My wife and I are big crayon rails fans, but we don't play Nippon Rails very often; maybe it's because our copy is the older version in the plastic tube, and it's a bit of trouble to get it out. It's especially good for 2 people, because the map is quite tight (in fact, I don't recommend it for 4 or more.) After this play, I found someone selling the newer, boxed version, and I'm going to pick that up.

Power Grid: Benelux/Central Europe - 1 play
First Published 2006
4 years, 8 months, 24 days
Current Rating -  9

I enjoy Power Grid, but there are a lot of maps, and I hadn't played this since 2013. We had 3 of us wanting to play, but also wanting to finish quickly, so I suggested the Benelux map, which has some rule changes that speed play. It worked as intended; we finished in not much more than an hour.

[I don't want to impugn anyone else's items, but I've been in this hobby for decades, and I don't typically list games that I've played within the past 3 years. Every so often I play something that's several decades dusty, though not this month.]

Looks like I've managed to play 2 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Formula Motor Racing -- (1 this month; 12 plays 4 years ago) _6_
(images by Gambiteer & TVis)

It's a fluffy little thing: random, capricious, and with more take-that than I truly want. It's also pretty fast - so it doesn't overstay its welcome too much. I've no particular agenda to get this one to the table: so it could easily be years again before the next play.

Google Datacenter Manager -- (1 this month; 20 plays 26 months ago) _7⅔_
(images by rw2e & ruazn2)

This one, on the other hand, is really cool: and I'm sad that it was so long since the last play. I'll need to try a bit harder to ensure that it doesn't appear on the list again!

Even though its the same as Palastgeflüster - other than the theme - this alternative presentation is delightful. It's strangely thematic: the card powers all make sense in context. That's pretty strange, I admit; but there've been other games rethemed successfully before.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Monday Lunch folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

I'm ashamed I hadn't played this one in almost 4 years. This remains a favorite, albeit lightly played. Hopefully there won't be such a long gap next time! I know it isn't fully balanced per se, but I do find it just a fun experience.

Did poorly in my return. I still think this is a classic and own a copy and will keep it. Anyone can learn and play in a minute. Playing well, on the other hand, can be tricky.

Didn't realize it had been over a year. I try to make a point of getting this to the table at least once or twice a year. I find it quite fascinating. I do hope the reprint occurs this year.

I played this one once previously, and finally bought a copy this month, since it was priced at about the cost of the shipping I'd save for adding it to my order. I liked the game when I first played it, and it's more topical than ever.

Pocket Battles: Celts vs. Romans - 1 play

I dusted this one off for a lunchtime play with a co-worker who'd never played Pocket Battles before. We played with 60-point pre-fab armies. My Celts got to 31 points, signalling the end of the game. My opponent had one order token left and used it to defeat my 7-point Chariot, so that in the end, he had ... 32 points!

I must have missed a log of it within the past few months, I think I have played it in the past couple months (although maybe that was both in their past month).

Current Comments:
Can drag on a bit long. I want to love this game. There's a lot to like about it. But the more and more I play it, there seems to be no speed up in the game. With 5 or 6 it DRAGS. Even with using 2 exp for upgrade, it still turns into a 4-5 hour game. Part of the fun is reading out (and to a little degree acting up) the cards. But, IT ALWAYS gets to a point where you are starting your move before the next person finishes. So, you no longer really see what's going on with everyone just you. Making it a Solitaire game. This rating is for 4 players at 5, I'd drop it to a 6 and with more then 5 players I'd rate it a 5.

An excellent game with a ton going on and a ton of choices. It seems to have some many different avenues to get points. I rated this an 8.5 after one play. But, over time it just seemed too much for it's own good and dropped it to a 7. Still a good game.

Zatre - 1 play
24 years, 9 months, 14 days
Current Rating -  4.5

Yeah, I knew this one was dusty! Last played in the nineties, I’ve kept it around out of habit and finally had a request from my 6yo son to try it. A sort of Scrabble/Qwirkle with numbers, scoring sets of 10s, 11s and 12s: I vaguely remember there were tournaments for this on the continent at some point, but that was before BGG and certainly my renewed interest in the hobby. It’s OK; there’s some strategy and plenty of tactics; and, obviously, luck of the draw. Useful for basic math skills.

Jamaica - 1 play
2 years, 4 months, 16 days
Current Rating -  6.5

I’ve been a bit down on Jamaica, as it usually gets played 6 player and there’s *always* a drop-away loser. This play was at 5 and everything was quite level after going through the deck once. We house-rule that the Move/Move card gets removed at this point, as it usually leads to a win if it comes up in someone’s shuffle. This time, the game was decided by my third successive 2 on the combat die giving my opponent a fairly comfortable win by loading up her holds with gold. Decent game; just as non-skill-dependent as I remembered.

Red7 - 1 play
1 year, 10 months, 23 days

Current Rating -  6.5
Bad idea trying to teach this without playing it in so long... very bad idea for a Chudyk game. We got there, though, and Red7 turned out to be an OK filler for novice gamers, who just about had an idea what was going on by the end.

7 Wonders - 1 play
1 year, 10 months, 4 days
Current Rating -  8

A full seven player game whisked through in about an hour (including the usual remind-teach): as usual for this group, the victory was contested by those who completely ignored combat; and we had one player who swore he never saw a resource card until the end of Age II (possible, I suppose). Consequently a 57 to 56 win dropped down to a low score of 17. Still a good game at the high player count; regularly requested. I’m tempted to pick up Babel, but that may just increase the remind-teach time.

Guillotine - 1 play
1 year, 4 months, 8 days
Current Rating -  8

Still one of my favourite games, if just for the theme (a rarity for me): I know it will repulse the more sensitive/PC types out there, but it is played for comedic effect. I had the devil’s own luck for this play, got all the 5s, the Count and Countess, broke someone else’s Guard set and won by a mile, despite being justifiably picked on throughout. Probably not a game-club game, but fun with the right attitude, happily played for almost 20 years.

Khet 2.0 - 1 play
1 year, 0 months, 15 days
Current Rating -  5

My 6yo son requested ‘The Laser Game’ but it proved to be still too deep an abstract for him and he was completely befuddled (having played Mancala very well last month). Annoyingly, after just a couple of plays, one Sphinx is broken and the other shooting off at a bizarre angle: not impressed with the build-quality at all.

I usually consider something dusty if it hasn't been played for at least 2 years.

I was surprised to realize that, unless my record-keeping is in error, I hadn't played DC Comics Deck-Building Game: Heroes Unite since 2014! I have been playing the related game, DC Comics Deck-Building Game in the meantime, though.

I play these games solo, using one of several very good user-made variants.

In March, I played twice (once with Booster Gold, and once with the Starfire promo superhero) using this simple but fun solo variant:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/101516/dc-dbg-bgg-soli...
and add this list of card changes specific to Heroes Unite:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1149984/solo-play
Plus I am used the optional solo variant rule to have Villain Attacks (but not Super-Villain First Attacks) occur every turn as long as the card is in the line-up.

Rating = d10-8

Out of the Dust, March, 2017:

Expedition
Dust level: Eight years, 1 month
My wife and I greatly enjoyed our many two-player games of Expedition in the first decade of this century. Coming back to the game at last we found it to be . . . still great fun! The cards haven't held up too well--they're slightly oblong and thus very bendy across the middle, but at 50+ games we've more than gotten our money's worth.
2 plays this month, 54 all-time

Lost Cities
Dust level: Six years, 7 months
Another favorite of ours years ago. However, Lost Cities, unlike Expedition, felt a bit played out upon this revisitation. Still, I wouldn't mind going for 100 plays (I know it's crazy to have goals like this but I find them irresistible).
1 play this month, 92 all-time

I've always loved this game and was very glad to get back to it after way too long. I must say I felt like a bit of an ogre winning one of the games with my factory's pollution level maxed out--I just paid all the steep fines and won anyway. Unbridled industry at its best/worst!

Traded away my copy long ago, and somewhat regretted it. So, I bought a copy for a friend who I knew liked the game, but we didn't get around to trying it again with each other at the time. Having a yen to play at last, said friend brought it over and we enjoyed three quick games.

I like Pay Dirt, but I have only played it a few times. I am thinking that I should be giving some more games some more plays, but when all games need some love, it's difficult to give them all enough love. But almost two year is a long time for a nice game to hang about on the shelf.

Is it really a year ago (almost two!) that I played this lovely game? I suppose it is. But that is quite sad, because I acutally like it: It is without a doubt one of my favourite Kickstarter backed games. I like it really much, and let's make a pledge to have it played once a year at least, mkay?

I was happy to receive this game about a year ago in a Danish math trade; And I see it have been a quite precise hit on the dust level. I think it is a cool game, and I liked it since the first time I played it sometime in the late 1990s (1998 maybe) - and I still like it. The trucks, and the cargo cubes to place in them. Only thing to make them more awesome would be to mod a trailer to add instead of the card. But great game in my opinion!

I'm almost always up for a game of Carcassonne. It is a matter of my wife being in the mood to play it. When it reaches the table we often play with multiple expansions. This month's in-dusting play were no different. My oldest daughter and I played a quicker, basic game as a homework break which was nice as well. I'm thinking I might take this in my Plano box to work and introduce the guys to the basic game over lunch for a few plays once we finish our stretch with Innovation.

I finally won for the first time. There were only two of us able to take a quick lunch break during the audit earlier this month so I introduced him to this quick best of three rounds set collection game. My plays are spaced out too far apart to say I'm getting it, but I am beginning to appreciate a deeper level of strategy that I know exists hidden from my current reach.

A fun game - I even should consider change its rating. This play also marked the first time I won, and by killing two wizards!

CC is one of my favorite games, and I have played it all years since 2010, until last year, when I failed. Since I noticed this I wanted to make sure 2017 won't follow suit - it took some months but I did it, and even played two times in the same week.

Too good to be one year without plays. And it did, but by just some days.

Decided to try this one solo again a year after I played it the first time. Didn't get quite as many rules wrong this time (especially as I didn't draw an encounter card when I explored a tile for the second time...). Played the first 6 chapters and it's one of few solo games I enjoy - probably because it feels like a story I'm experiencing.

The kid was finally willing to play this game, not just play _with_ it! A decent enough game, although the luck of the dice can be cruel. Hopefully I can use this to ease him into Formula De (Mini)...

After downloading the expansion and making my own print and play of it, my wife and I dusted this one off and gave it a go.

This is my most played version of Carcassonne, although my favourite still remains Carcassonne: The City.

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Paths of Glory - Last Played March 2008

I don't own this one and haven't really though about playing it for a fair while. However, when the opportunity arose my regular wargames opponent dropped over for a a game and we both agreed to play this.

This game was my first time as the Triple Entente. I badly overestimated the ability of France to undertake sustained offensives and, despite some successes against Austria-Hungary in the east lost as my French defenses unravelled.

Good fun and I would play again.

Buccaneer Bones - Last Played May 2014

Dragged this out to play with the Little Fish. At the last outing they were pretty unimpressed and, sadly, this attitude has not changed. We played the game to the finish this time and no-one was interested in a second game.

I can see this as a dust gatherer unless I sell or trade it.

Carcassonne: The Castle - Last played October 2015

I really like this clever little two player tile laying game but can rarely enthuse others about this game. Last month I convinced Little Fish the Elder to give it a try. He was keen and enjoyed it.

Hopefully this will hit the table a bit more frequently in the future.

Since I can't get to my old posts for the dusty playlists and the tool is still broken, I'm just winging it on format here.

A Question of Scruples
My rating = d10-3
Dust level = Unknown - decades?

Let's be honest - this is the sort of game that you played when you were a youth and it probably was in an environment where they were trying to instill some morality in you (school, church, etc.). It's an odd get-to-know you activity, and I've never thought it was fun. Learned this week it's even less fun with complete strangers.

Pandemic: The Cure
My rating = d10-8
Dust level = 1 year, 10 months

I didn't own this game, so the gap here isn't surprising. I'd actually been trying to get a copy for some time but for whatever reason our FLGS never had it on hand, and I wasn't obsessed enough to special order it. So it was a nice birthday treat this year.

It still holds up as a unique way to play a favorite game - just a bit faster than the original.
