You are once again invited to take part in the monthly Golden Turtleback miniature painting contest.

The contest has kept its original name in honour of its founder David Anderson (turtleback). It's usually run by Cerith Morgan-Jones (Bastion of insanity). I'm merely keeping the contest going until Cerith returns.

Please give this geeklist a thumb to help get it to the front page, and click on the images you thumb and give the actual images thumbs up as well !

The more contestants the better! New painters are more than welcome!

RULES

1) Add the game of the miniature(s) you painted as an item to the list. Insert the image(s) in the body of the entry. Use the format [imageid=xxxxxmedium] where xxxxx is the id of the picture.

2) The image you submit must have been uploaded during March 2017. Gallery images are okay but submitted images are preferred.

3) One entry per person. You may submit images of a single miniature or a group at your discretion.
You may, however, use either:
up to two 'normal' pictures of your entry, usually, the front and back of the miniature(s)
OR
one image of a montage/collage of your entry.

4) You are the artist. Please do not submit miniatures painted by someone else.

5) Make of the mini, scale and paints you used are appreciated.

6) The contest will end on 31 April 2017. The winner will be the picture with the most thumbs. Winners will appear in the next months’ list.

7) Users can thumb as many entries as they like.

In the interests of maintaining a level playing field for all entrants, if an entry does not conform to the above rules, it will be removed. New contestants will be notified beforehand so that they can edit their entry or submit another one that meets the criteria.

PRIZES

I'm reliant on tips to offer prizes. Any tips received will awarded as follows:

1st place: 35%, plus an exclusive microbadge! Microbadge: Golden Turtleback Painted Miniature Monthly Contest winner
2nd place: 25%
3rd place: 15%
Encouragement Awards: 25% (will be given to non-placing worthy entries with a bias to new participants.)

One random thumber will receive 5 !

Miniatures are 'Shock Troopers' from Wargames Factory. They were painted with Vallejo paints and inks as well as old GW washes.

Edit:

Gosh, I',m really not liking the way my fist attempt at a composite image has turned out - would a couple of 'normal' photos work better do you think?

Ama No Zako, from Malifaux 2nd edition by Wyrd Miniatures. Large figure in a "32mm heroic" line, in her hunched state she's maybe 1,5x taller than an upright standard Malifaux human. Used Army Painter and Vallejo products. Specifics in the spoiler.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Bit fuzzy on some details. This was painted a while ago and at parts I went back 'n forth a lot.

Army Painter = AP
Vallejo Game Colour = VGC

Skin
AP Chaotic Red
Highlighted by mixing in AP Lava Orange until I reached a point I was happy with

Purple dress
Basecoated with 2 parts AP Ultramarine : 1 part AP Alien Purple.
I washed with AP Purple Tone wash. I precision shaded by mixing some dark purple, probably used VGC Black Ink among other things for that. I washed and glazed the whole thing with VGC Violet Ink. I highlighted it with AP Alien Purple and Alien Purple mixed with white. I finished it off with several thin layers of VGC Violet Ink.

White trim

Basecoated with very light blue
Drybrushed white
Thin wash with very light blue
Re-highlighted specific parts with white

Teeth & nails
AP Skeleton Bone
AP Soft Tone wash
AP Skeleton Bone+White mix to highlight

Gold
AP Greedy Gold
Brown wash (AP Soft or Strong Tone most likely)
Re-highlighted with Greedy Gold

Hair
Black
Highlighted with AP Deep Blue

Initially planned to go more towards blue, but I liked the look of repeated violet ink layers. White fabric going around her body was a pain to paint as I kept getting white on purple and purple on white.

Gloomhaven (a game that has almost immediately rocketed into my personal top 5 games of all time) inspired me to dust of my brushes and paint some minis for the first time in several years (and this is now the 5th set of minis I've ever painted).

I used Tamiya paints and very old Citadel washes. Total painting time for these items was roughly 25 hours (I don't know how long it takes others to do this sort of thing, but I suspect I'm a very slow painter!).

Board Game: Gloomhaven

Board Game: Gloomhaven

A couple of unexpected things came out of these painting sessions. I've been struggling a lot with both physical and mental illnesses for a very long time now, and am embarrassed to say I've been on disability for quite some time. One thing that surprised me was just how happy I felt, sitting at my desk, listening to podcasts, and painting these critters for hours on end while ignoring all the things I "should" have been doing. It truly fed my soul.

The other thing that caught me off guard was just how proud I felt when viewing the finished result. It's perhaps a silly thing to say about a couple of little toys, but it made me realize that within the self-loathing and feelings of failure that come with disability, I have very few things that I feel proud of about myself anymore. It was a really good feeling.

It's a great gift that this game has given me, and as a result, I'm all the more pleased that I'm totally in love with the game, itself!

Thanks for checking out my minis!

These guys are mostly painted with Army Painter. I think only the gunslinger's pants was Vallejo Dark Grey.

These guys required careful inking because of all the ripped shirts and pants. Love the gunslinger's cape and he's a close match with the game's illustration.

Board Game: Song of Blades and Heroes: Revised Edition
A continuation of my women miniatures of wargaming, this one is the Hasslefree Boudi miniature. I was really looking forward to painting this one but become a bit stuck for ideas on what to do for the clothes. Simple leather colour would be easy but I already had another miniature from the warband in more earthy colours. So I went the crazy option of trying to do an effective tartan pattern on a small miniature.

From gallery of EyeLost
From gallery of EyeLost

I ended up happy with the results. It looks a bit clunky in the camera but is better to the eye at a distance. There are freckles on the face that don't show up well in the image either. I like the base result, it looks like she is standing in a wild field.

Vallejo paints, probably about 3 hours work.

All the figures and the buildings from the main game and the golden fleece expansion posing for a photo.

Please click through to and have a look at the large image as the figures are compressed a bit in medium thanks

Board Game: Santorini

The figures are only about half the night of a current GW figure but have great big head that's are fun to paint. Mostly done with warcolours but I used Vallejo primer and white. Oddly the Val white is white than the standard warcolours one.

The golden fleece was done with Vallejo liquid gold and a homemade made wash of ink and airbrush thinner with a bit of flow enhancer to get the capillary action going

Board Game: Santorini

Then buildings took quite a bit more work than I initially expected.
Step 1: base coat in Vallejo grey primer
Step 2: pre shade the inside corners with warcolours cool grey 3
Step 3: 3 light coats of warcolours white
Step 4: homemade black wash in the lines of the corners
Step 5: white line the outside corners with Vallejo white
Step 6: Vallejo prem_air Matt coat varnish

The domes got a zenithal airbrushing from mid grey to white when 2 light coats of candy racing blue which is really pretty and a better match to the real Santorini domes, and it sparkles in the sun too.

That's a multi-part resin mini (7 parts + the base IIRC).
Size: about 40mm tall, 65mm long (base is 50mm diameter).
Paints: various brands, but mostly Vallejo Model.

I hesitated to enter Conan's tentacle-y monster instead, but I figured this one was a change from the fantasy stuff I typically paint. Plus, it's the first time I used an x-acto and sandpaper on a lion's balls...

My photo showing both types of orc miniatures together looks small in the medium size format, so I'll focus on the basic minion type for this month's entry:

From gallery of Autoduelist

You can read more about these figures in my orc minion thread here, where I document the clay work I had to do for missing noses, along with additional photos of the wolf riders.

Normally I would include a picture of the complete army to prove I painted all 25 figures, but I have something much better: an entire painted Defenders of the Realm set, including custom miniatures I added to the game!

From gallery of Autoduelist

You can see photos highlighting the entire set on this thread. Will a collection of 267 painted miniatures be enough to beat my personal best in this month's Golden Turtleback? Only time and thumbs will tell.... [Update: Just to be clear, the orcs I painted in March 2017 allowed me to complete the game, which features miniatures painted in other months and years. Hopefully voters will appreciate the commitment it takes to paint this many figures - especially that final orc - many of which are hardly CMON or GW-quality.]

Didn't get good snaps of my big ships last month until April so we have some decimators. So we get some crappy cell shots, w/e, space ships are lame anyway

15mm figures by Donnington, paints mostly by Vallejo, basing materials by various.

(The bases themselves are by Litko, which I don't think I've ever specified before. I've also used bases by GameManiacs, Renaissance Ink, and Veni Vidi Vici - once the basing is done, you can hardly tell the difference.)

I finished these 5 ships from the Merchants & Mauraders expansion: Seas of Glory in March. 5 and 1/2 years ago I started painting with Merchants & Marauders: Base Game.
