I find myself in the unexpected situation of having friends - even less expected, friends who enjoy board games. Too many friends, in fact, for most of the games in my collection to be playable.

My wife and I have been hosting board game nights for our friends, which nearly always have at least 6 people. Since most games I own are optimal with 3-4 players, this has posed a problem.

I'd appreciate suggestions in this list of games that work well with 6 or more players. I'm not looking for social games (i.e. The Resistance or Secret Hitler), but more medium-weight strategic games that are still actually fun with 6 players. It would also be useful to briefly explain why a particular game is good and works well with 6.

This is a fantastic game. It plays up to 6 without slowing down at higher player counts and has a great theme. It is fairly straightforward to teach and also not too long.

This classic also plays well with 6, though I think the ideal number is probably 5. Very simple rules but very deep gameplay.

This is a very good game, and plays up to 6. It is a bit on the heavier side, though, and I haven't been able to get it to the table with so many - especially since usually at least one or two people are fairly new to board games.

I think it will work well with 6.

This game is always reliably great, and it still works well with 6.

It is a bit on the longer side, however, and can be difficult to get to the table. When offering new players a choice of games, they never seem to go for the one about managing a power company for some reason.

This is a fun game, but I think it starts to drag a bit with 6 (the maximum number of players). Often with 6 people, the haunt is revealed too early while the house is fairly small and everyone is still weak. Your turns often take a while to come up.

I think the game is best with 4 or 5, but it does work with 6.

While Diplomacy is the best and greatest game ever made, it also doesn't quite fit the list. Diplomacy isn't a game that you can just pull off the shelf and start playing. Playing a game of Diplomacy requires a lot of forethought and preparation, in addition to finding the right group. That group doesn't include my wife.

Obviously best with 7, but plays very well with 6 (because really, who wants to be Italy?)

This is not a good game, though it makes up for its deficiencies by having a fantastic theme. It also plays up to 8, and people consistently have fun while doing so (mostly due to theme and not gameplay).

I also generally don't particularly like one vs. many games, of which this is not a shining example.

Settlers is indisputably a classic, though it has largely fallen out of my favor. It is still an immensely beginner friendly game that more experienced players can enjoy.

The 5-6 player expansion brings the player count up to 6, which does kind of work. I think the game starts to move a bit slowly, but it does at least retain the classic settlers experience at the higher player count - including all of the flaws, such as poor dice rolling and kingmaking.

Great game, but I almost refuse to play without 6. Your turn won't come around very often, but you can still participate in almost everything. Best played in a group where people know each other.

It's got a social aspect, but also strategic at times.

When my gaming group gets together, it seems we often have 6-7 people. We frequently play social deduction games like The Resistance, Coup, Bang and some fillers like For Sale! But as the post requested medium-weight strategy games, this is probably about the only one we play that meets the criteria (that hasn't been posted already).

This is a quick auction game that takes 6 (and works well for 5 or 4 also.) The 6-player game is the most strategic, because all the cards are in play for every voyage; you know there are 7 cards of each color. With fewer than 6, the color you are looking for may have been disproportionately removed for a give voyage.

This is my #1 game. It is now available in a beautiful new edition.

This game works well for any number of players from 2 to 9, but it's excellent with 6. The one drawback is that skill matters a lot, despite the fact that there's a lot of randomness in the game, so new players can easily think they lost through bad luck even if it was sub-optimal decisions.

It's possible that this is lighter than you're looking for, but 6 is the best number. It's a betting/racing game in which you need to think about what your opponents might do (if they're going to help the horse you bet on, you might not need to.)

Although this is a 2-player wargame, the "epic" version allows you to play with up to 8 people, in teams. We've had a ton of fun with this at conventions.

Also, it has elephants!
