Tim, Ian and I sat down to play one of the longest games of Terraforming Mars on record while we manned the front desk and then took a short hiatus while Ian played in the Pandemic tournament. Fortunately, it's a great game for pausing part way through.

Tim, Amy and I sat down to play this Lovecraftian reimagining of Pandemic. When I first heard about this game I initially wrote it off as yet another Pandemic clone with a coat of theme. I'm really glad I got the chance to play it.

The game is fundamentally Pandemic and if you're familiar with Pandemic you'll definitely find the Parallels in the rules as you're learning them. The end result, however, is really quite a different game. I recently played Pandemic: Iberia and while it is still somewhat different from Pandemic it's far closer to the Original than Reign of Cthulhu.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one and am really glad to have played it.

Sadly we were 1 turn away from winning when Cthulhu was summoned bringing misery and suffering to us all.

I finally got a chance to play this one after having been taught it twice prior. I really enjoyed it but want to play much more of it to get a good feel for it. Even after a single play, it's pretty easy to get a sense of why it is so very well regarded.

Ian with several thousand plays under his belt kicked my butt handily.

I've recently fallen in love with this publisher after discovering Nippon and then Railroad Revolution. I've wanted to work my way through their back catalogue and was really excited to play this.

This one is definitely the most unique mechanically. You need to negotiate moving your representatives around your own player board as well as managing ever growing unrest in your provinces to ensure your actions keep firing correctly. Meanwhile, you've got an interesting action selection mechanic with higher and lower cards and then a big point salad of which it would be impossible to succeed at across the board.

I find that most of the What's Your Game titles take relatively simple things and then have them interact in a way that generates satisfying complexity. They then take that and polish and polish until you end up with something very well balanced and elegant to play.

Nick took this one out by a pretty decent margin with myself, Grug and Tim reasonably close together for the remaining spots. Nick managed to finish a really good points engine in the final round or two of the game, leaping over myself and Tim.

This is a fun sort of party game.

The game comes with this cardboard tower of box lids with a hole cut in the middle of each. You stack these up like a tower of blocks and then drop two red cubes down the shaft in the middle. Everyone at the table listens to try and figure out where the red blocks landed.

Now two cubes from every player go down the shaft and again you listen. The red cubes represent murder victims or scenes of the crime. The goal of the game is to get the blame away from you and onto the other players. You do this by guessing who is on what floor (guess right and you increase their suspicion) or admit that you were on a floor (guess right and you reduce yours). Get it wrong and you add another of your cubes to the tower.

There is definitely some strategy and skill in listening to the blocks tumble down the tower and pondering was that the 4th floor or the 5th? But ultimately there is a lot of chaos with those tumbling cubes and the game is really about laughing at how horribly wrong you all got it.

It was good fun with 6 of us, Grug, Amy, Leah, Tim, Pete and I. For those wondering I was the most guilty person by a mile and Grug the most innocent.

Grug, Tim and I sat down to play this newish printing of Medici which I picked up last year and hadn't had a chance to play (one of our generous sponsors Grail games also donated a copy).

The game is really quite simple. You take turns as the auctioneer setting up lots for the table to bid on in order to fill ships cargo holds with goods. Once the auction phase is over and everyone's holds are full (hopefully), you score. The most valuable hold gets some points and there are majority points across the five different goods for having the most and if you reach the upper echelons, bonus points in addition.

Victory points are also your money which means the bidding is always tight as you're effectively giving away points with everything you buy. I would love to check this out with more players at some point as while it was good with three I bet it shines at 4, 5 or possibly even 6.

Ian and I taught Ryan and Christophe the most important thing about Wurfelwurt and that is sausage!

They didn't believe us at the start but by the end, they were converted and they took out 1st and 2nd place respectively thanks to some great sausages.

I have it on good authority that this is now Christophe's favourite game.

I got to join in on a demo of this upcoming Rule & Make game (another of our sponsors) based on the video game of the same name.

I've played a lot of deck builders and I've played a lot of dungeon crawlers and I've played a lot of games that mash them together. This morning's game was hands down the best one I've ever played, easily knocking off games such as Thunderstone Advance. I would have happily played all day if it weren't for other people wanting to check the game out.

Ian has done a great job on the artwork and Barantas and the team at Rule & Make in developing a thoroughly enjoyable recreation of the video game. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on it.

Tim taught Amy, Helen, Alexandre and I how to play Antike II. I had heard that this was a significant influence in the design of Scythe which led to my interest in playing it. I then saw it come out of the box looking like Concordia with a rondel from Navegedor and was even more excited.

The game like most area control games has that interesting quiet before the storm element where players manoeuvre to gather the resources and positions they need before the race to the final victory condition. There was a good spread of focus on military, board control, technology and development across all the players. Alex and Helen built a pretty formidable and mostly united eastern front while Tim focused on developing his resource generation. Amy quietly skirted the top of the board while I took my empire to the sea.

At the apex of the game I needed to sail west laying waste to a chunk of Tim's empire while Alex and Helen started chipping away at my own. In the end I managed to snag the final victory by controlling the seas with a massive fleet of ships.

Overall a really great game which was sadly a little bit hampered by some bad rulebook layout choices but one I would definitely play again.

Alex, Helen, Tim and I played this real-time dice chucker about scrambling to gather resources and take refuge in a bunker before a flood of aliens infiltrates your base.

Real-time dice chucker is typically a pretty quick way to put me off a game but I would recommend anyone check this one out at least once, especially if you are a fan of the Aliens franchise or just like the overwhelming odds type scenarios.

The game is played in 2 minute waves over 8 rounds. You need to rush to the far end of the board and hopefully retreat back to your bunker door while picking up all the supplies before you're overwhelmed. You're doing this by rolling a pool of 4 dice that will dwindle as you complete more and more of your objectives which is a pretty good representation of you becoming exhausted.

There are lots and lots of aliens with different abilities, difficulties and threats to keep things very interesting and always tense. There is also lots of weapons, items and alien artefacts to help power up your character as you break into those supply caches.

We had a really good time playing this and finished victorious in round 8 with a plentiful 7 seconds to spare.

A beautiful, incredible game that I hate with such a passion.

In all seriousness, Ian taught Tim and while it was good with 3 this game shines at 4 where it basically becomes 2 v 2 but teammates aren't allowed to talk to each other. You have to discern via the very very limited turns in the game, who is propping up the other to victory.
