Mental Ellie.

My cracked, blistered, bleeding feet are agony, every little step another torture. I walk through the ruined landscape towards the distant domes. Home.
I’m cold, so cold.
A slight sound, a scuff of sand.
Men. Wicked knives and worse, bringing chains for me again. Hungz, Scoffs, Snuffz, Grunts? Kill boys all.
It begins in the pit of stomach, like acid indigestion, burning, becoming.
It always begins like this, so many times now. I could fight, but it’s inevitable, like the need to shit.
The power, the elements – Earth, Air, Fire, Water.
Molecules begin to vibrate, faster and faster, excited like me, zero-point to incandescent fury.
Pins and needles now, beginning to warm. A million tiny fires burn inside.
Air begins to swirl, tiny dust devils dancing under my bloody feet.
I scream, and rise, and the very air itself burns…

I see them through the shimmering haze from fifty feet up. Hundreds? Thousands? Dangerous men with wicked weapons, and heavy copper chains; all die screaming. The nearest smoulder, hair singes, then bursts alight. Skin blackens, splits, and melts off bones. Eyes and organs pop in the unearthly heat. A few scream, echoing my own; most die more swiftly, drawing super-heated air in to burning lungs. A quick death, a mercy. They deserve to suffer. I watch the world burn, and burn.
The stink of burnt hair, faeces, and body fluids, fades to the sweet, sweet smell of roasting pork. I salivate; I’m hungry.
Bodies, and scorched parts of them, litter the landscape as far as I can see, all the way to the distant horizon. A few still twitch, fewer still writhe and burn. I smile. I could summon water to quench them, like drowning in the world ocean. But no, they owe me their agony. Eventual stillness.
I need to centre now. I lower. Earth calms, centres, placates. Solid, ponderous, inevitable. Digging fingers into the soil, desperate for the Gaia connection, trying to calm, centre. Slowing, calm, still. Breathe. Slow breath in, slower breath out. Breathe, breathe.
I eat now, then stand again. Another agonising, tortured step towards the distant domes.
Their names echo in my head. “Pariah, outcast, scourge, witch”…
I’m twelve years old. Mental Ellie… Ellie Mental…

Ice Magicks

Arcane scholars have long acknowledged the presence of many schools of magic. The elemental building blocks of the Cosmos constitute raw material for spells for those well versed in arcane law. Those mages who seek unconventional power often move beyond the classic four elements. Cryomancers, masters of ice magic, are one such group.

Every school of magic has a suite of powerful spells. Clever mages focus on the strengths of their chosen element. Here is a sample of the most popular ice spells, with notes on their uses.

Cryomancy spells:

Cold Zone – area spell lowering ambient temperature, popular with merchants, and mages who want to increase the duration of other spells

Cone of Frost – area attack spell

Freeze Object – target item becomes frozen solid. Metal items become dangerous to the touch, also increasing damage in combat. A very potent spell when cast upon metal armour.

Heart of Ice – target gains ability to tolerate intense cold and resistance to ice-based magicks. Linked to a corresponding increase in damage form fire-based attacks.

Ice Javelin – creates a thin weapon of intense cold, capable of being thrown

Ice Shield – small, floating defensive shield

Ice Sword – melee weapon of intense cold, inflicting additional damage in combat

Ray of Frost – linear attack spell

Skin of Ice – thin layer of opaque ice, used to make an area slippery, or to hide a trap

Wall of Ice – duration varies with ambient temperature, useful for blocking corridors or making impromptu rafts

See also The Wand of Lasers and Feelings, a fabled artifact which contains the essence of not just the mundane elements Ice and Fire, but also Putrefaction, Soul, Blood, and Love.

Lasers: one beam each in the following order per Ray of Frost, Ray of Sickness, and Scorching Ray spells
or
Feelings: a chain of spells in the following order per Restoration, Cure Wounds, and Calm Emotions (centered on target).

The wielder must choose a target as well as a number between 1 and 6, then roll a d6. If the roll is lower, the wand casts Lasers. If the roll is higher, it casts Feelings. On a tie, it's Laser-Feelings: cast the Laser spells and then the Feelings spells in the order given.

The elemental cosmos is a pillar, with the base elements at the bottom and lighter, more refined material in the levels above that. All matter wants to ascend from the lowest phase to the highest, and alchemists will sometimes try to quicken this process. Gravity is the force working contrary to this tendency: sending rocks tumbling down mountainsides, plucking leaves off of trees - or felling them entirely - and dragging down souls to the underworld. It also causes planets and other constructs of firmament to move across the sky, but because they are so remote, only rarely do they leave it - often to the peril of us below!

In ascending order, the elements are rock, leaf, hand, and firmament. Plants spring from the soil, creatures draw sustenance from plants, and the soul yearns for heaven. These are self-explanatory, although different races use other terms for “hand” – dwarves and aquatic elves call it “scale,” but birds and wood elves speak of “feather.” Firmament represents anything that travels above the air, unreachable by mortals: stars, comets, suns and moons.

Philosophers further distinguish forms of each element by their proportion of fire and water. A mundane example of this is the smith who applies fire to iron in his forge. At the other extreme, rock in the absence of fire can become ice or mud. Leaf containing too much fire ignites and consumes itself – part of which lightens as smoke, and part of which returns to the earth as ash. The watery and fiery extremes of hand are blood and breath, respectively.

Because of its remote nature, little is known about how fire and water interact with firmament. Some of it escapes to the earth as lightning and rain, but the vast majority of matter that ascends to the heavens stays there. What little alchemists have worked with is volatile and hard to wield. However, it is commonly accepted that precious metals and gems – some would say, the whole object of alchemy – can be created with some unguessable mixture of firmament and rock. The secret to such processes has been lost to time, but it must be dangerous and expensive to begin with.

One cult believes that their volcanic deity transforms firmament back to rock, but they lack evidence to justify this faith. After all, this would mean that the cosmos is cyclical as opposed to sequential.

The Alchemy skill covers manipulation of all elements. Generally, it is harder to worth with the “higher” forms of matter. The four types of actions, in order of difficulty, are debasement, transmutation, distillation, and refinement. Debasement is easiest because gravity assists the alchemist; refinement is hardest for the opposite reason. Transmutation is the application of fire or water to alter something, without changing its phase. Distillation strips the impurities of a substance away, leaving only elemental quintessence, which is more convenient to store and easier to work with. Someone with the formula to enact a working need only have enough of the correct material and a laboratory.

A GM can distinguish alchemists further by giving them affinities for particular forms, or equipment that helps with particular processes. The four traditional elementals can exist if a GM presents air elementals as creatures of the firmament.

Chimeric Plate Armour of Elemental Immunity

The fabled Chimeric Plate Armour of Elemental Immunity was once created for the bodyguard of a wizard to protect against the random dangers the wizard's tower possessed. As payment for his loyal services each year the bodyguard would ask for another piece of his armour to be enchanted. Each year the wizard agreed, until finally, on the last piece, the guard got somewhat more than he had bargained for.

This happened so long ago no one remembers the name of the bodyguard, or the wizard, but the legend of the armour grew. Often treasure hunters seek it, for once they have found a single piece they become obsessed with finding the complete set - which the wizard scattered far and wide upon the death of his bodyguard. Unfortunately for the bodyguard, he forget to get the armour enchanted against more mundane weapons, nor was he protected from old age.

The pieces:

01) Helmet - fire resistance (50% chance to find in treasure)
02) Gorget - poison resistance (25% chance to find in treasure)
03) Pauldrons - light/radiant resistance (10% chance to find in treasure)
04) Vambrace - thunder/sound resistance (20% chance to find in treasure)
05) Gauntlets - chaos/order resistance (30% chance to find in treasure)
06) Cuirass - electric resistance (45% chance to find in treasure)
07) Faulds - spell resistance (05% chance to find in treasure)
08) Cuisses - force resistance (15% chance to find in treasure)
09) Greaves - cold resistance (40% chance to find in treasure)
10) Sabatons - acid resistance (35% chance to find in treasure)

If the wearer of the armour only has a few of the pieces, then the wearer merely gains elemental resistance instead of full immunity. The wearer does not roll for this resistance, as the wearer gains the resistance of each piece of armor they are wearing, as long as they are not wearing the full set.

It is only when all the pieces of the armour are assembled and worn together that they provide elemental immunity. However, this immunity is not all-encompassing. Each time the wearer takes elemental damage, the wearer of the armor rolls a ten sided-die. The number rolled determines the elemental immunity the wearer has, which lasts for the length of the combat or encounter.

Everyday Elementary Magic Objects

Amulet of running. Nullifies all negative movement conditions in any kind of terrain.

Cup of freezing. Keeps anything in it frozen.

Gown of stasis. Keeps anyone wrapped in it in a constant temperature no matter the weather.

Sail of perpetual tailwind. When up, this sail is always full of air.

Scarf of Neptune. While this is in your mouth, you can breath water - and only water. Speaking is impossible while using this item.

Superior shovel. Digs through anything, including metal.

Stick of fire. When scratched against something rough, it lits up.

Transmogrifier. This item is a chest that changes one element into another (gold into ice, water into hot coals, etc.). The change is random.

Wand of irrigation. Creates rain within a circle of a 20 paces radius. It rains heavily for three hours.

Whirlwind broom. This broom creates a small hurricane that blows the soot and sand outside.
