Grimwold's new-to-you geeklists are the highlight of my month on the geek. They motivate me to review the new games I've played (and recycle my entries as comments), and they allow me to read the thoughts of some of the most insightful BGGers on new and classic games.

But the new-to-me list is inevitably full of first impressions. I'm interested in hearing how those games that seemed so great at the time stood up to multiple plays. Did you actually play them that much after the first month? Did a game you dismissed at the time turn out to be better in retrospect?

Add an entry with the same game you chose for the New To You May 16 geeklist. Link to your entry in that geeklist, then write down your thoughts on the game you chose a year on. If your impression of some of the other games you wrote up that month have changed, let us know about that too.

The hot game that month was Quadropolis. Has it stood the test of time?

I'll be starting these lists mid-month (except when I forget!), so we don't have to keep up with this list and Grimwold's (and several other monthly ones) all at the same time. You can subscribe to the announcement thread for reminders.

Those who follow my posts here know that I'm pretty hard to please. But this month I played four games for the first time and was highly impressed by all of them. If they live up to the promise they showed on the first play, all could become firm favourites.

I'm pleased to report that three of the four have made it to 5+ plays and only Medina (which I don't own) hasn't been back to the table.

The Ravens of Thri Sahashri (5 plays) is fascinatingly unique and I wish I'd had more chance to explore its depth. Two plays recently with my old (and extremely sharp) 2p gaming friend really showed me the potential. The game also got much harder and more interesting on opening the first envelope, which basically restores the original Japanese rules. I've still only played as Feth (the more active role) and would love to try the other side, but the somewhat convoluted rules and opaque play are not an easy sell.

13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis (6 plays) sets out to be 'Twilight Struggle in 45 minutes'. It doesn't quite capture the gut-wrenching tension of the original (how could it?) but it's impressively smooth and swift. I've also been wowed by Asger Granerud's Flamme Rouge recently - he seems to have a talent for simplicity, which is getting all too rare in modern Euros.

Imhotep (7 plays) is the very embodiment of a 'solid 7'. I enjoy it every time I play it, no one I've introduced it to has hated it, but no one has been blown away by it either. The scoring is a little too fine-grained to produce many dramatic moments.

Deus is a civ builder game with a mix of tableau building, area control and development. In our initial plays we noticed the pace of the game is largely dependent upon how quickly players act to surround barbarian villages verse building their tableau and leveraging combos. The more tableau building approach has been far more enjoyable to us. I'm already concerned that it is feeling a little samey and may not offer enough compared to other games in our collection to have staying power.
We played it out for our 10x10 Challenge and were left with a meh kind of feeling. I did manage a more recent 4p game and it was a bit more interesting. I think I have to be in the right mood and with the right group (not sure my wife is all that into it) and seeing the card leverage around the table could translate to a more engaging area control on the board.

Sadly, it is some what forgettable. I'll play if asked, but I don't miss it and not sure I'd ask for it unless looking for something simple and quick to play.

Forbidden Stars

This excellent space conflict game got 3 more plays to bring the total to 8. It probably would have gotten more if not for the long play length, but each game faithfully recreates the feel of the world of original tabletop game and the only negative is that Fantasy Flight Games has parted ways with Games Workshop Ltd. meaning that no more races will be added. It will still see play from time to time, most of the time at 2P or even at 3P.

Original score: 8.5/10
Current score: 8.5/10

Quadropolis

I like city building games and this excellent offer from Days of Wonder is a worthy addition to the genre. It got 4 more plays last year and will continue to see sporadic table time.

Original score: 8.0/10
Current score: 8.0/10

Castles of Mad King Ludwig

While this has not gotten more plays from the initial 2 last year, it will continue to stay in my collection especially since I want to try it with the expansion. I will find a way for it to get more time.

Original score: 8.0/10
Current score: 8.0/10

Machi Koro

This has gotten only 1 more play, but this is due to the fact that I do not own the game. It is a good gateway game and one I will not shirk from playing from.

Original score: 7.5/10
Current score: 7.5/10

Mythotopia = 1 Play

This multiplayer descendant of A Few Acres of Snow had a real hard time seeing additional play time beyond the initial one last year. This is because I fear that the game length will be long with a lot of players. The system is still sound though although I will prefer its predecessor or Hands in the Sea if only 2 players are available.

Original score: 7.5/10
Current score: 7.5/10

American Rails

This auction/bidding railway network development game has not been played again which is a shame since the initial play was not bad. Needs more plays to be judged better.

Original score: 7.0/10
Current score: 7.0/10

I haven't played Quadropolis again, but I have thought about it a number of times. I don't own the game, but it's been on the edge of my purchase list for about a year now. It still interests me, but just not quite enough to pull the trigger yet.

Then: 7.5/10
Now: 7/10

Factory Funner has not gotten played since last year. I'm not terribly surprised, since Factory Fun also came out rarely. I do wish that Factory Funner distinguished itself from its predecessor a bit more. The games are nearly identical, but the small tweaks in the rules mean that Factory Fun usually gets the edge since I know the rules better.

Then: 7/10
Now: 7/10

I haven't had a lot of time for solo gaming recently, but if I do in the future, I'm still interested in giving Castellion some more plays. I'm in the process of moving and I think it's notable that I keep electing to not pack away Castellion just yet...

Then: 7/10
Now: 7/10

I still don't like RoboRally. It's too long, too random and has too many artifacts of 90s game design that we've long since moved past. The new edition fixes a couple of these issues (in exchange for sourcing its components from what I can only assume was the dumpster behind the GenCon prototype hall), but I still would avoid the game if possible.

Then: 3/10
Now: 3/10

Last year's list here.

Top pick then: Mottainai - 1 more play

Hmmm, kinda surprised I picked this as top: it’s an absolute bear to teach and not liked enough to be requested by others, so it tends to stay in the bag. It *is* in the bag, though, which says something.

Top pick now: Las Vegas - 5 more plays

Yeah, this should have been top pick: good fun and banter in a light game that can introduce its extra rules round by round. Not one I’d play back-to-back, but it’s a good inclusive opener, which is a rare thing.

Games that got better: Letter Tycoon - 11 more plays

Gone down very well with non-gamers - my mother and aunt in particular requested an immediate replay - less so with gamers. We have found that keeping the ‘pool’ letters for a whole round and having a second set showing for the next round speeds up play tremendously as everyone can be prepared for their turn without having a sudden rethink.

Timeline Challenge - 12 more plays

Another non-gamer hit for which I grabbed some old Monopoly tokens and made answer sheets so now it plays up to 10 individuals / teams; I’ve also adjusted one scoring rule and one of the games. Only drawback is the teeny tiny cards. Haven’t made it through all the expansion cards yet (the new Brexit card caused a chuckle when it came up!).

TIME Stories: The Marcy Case - 0 more plays, obviously

In the light of subsequent expansions, this goes up a notch: feels like the last one to have had an actual puzzle to it.

Still good: Secret Code 13+4 - 3 more plays

Still requested by my boy: he doesn’t yet find math(s) ‘fun’, but when he does, I think this’ll come out a lot more.

Unmoved: Raptor has not been played since, which is more a syndrome of two player games in general than this particular one. Fast & Furious: Full Throttle hasn’t been brought back to game night, would be happy to play, but newer is always shinier, isn’t it? Much the same for Eminent Domain, although less interested to play; mind you, it felt like it did more with the deck-building mechanic in 2011 than Clank! did in 2016.

Bottom of the heap: Unusual Suspects - 0 more plays

Not hugely interested to try again, but most of the comments I read about it in the ‘New To You’ lists are far more positive than mine was, so maybe I was off base on this one. Maybe.

Here's a link to the original item.

It was a light month.

One Night Revolution
Quote:
I only played One Night Revolution one time this month, but it was enough to get a good feel for how it plays and how it differs from One Night Ultimate Werewolf. It does feel pretty similar, but I like the fact that your role is not completely tied to your loyalty. It also works better if your venue gets loud (we play in a sports bar), because you don't need to be able to hear the audio of an app telling you what to do. The abilities seem pretty similar to One Night Ultimate Werewolf, but the way they work is slightly different and the fact that any given role could still be the traitor adds a nice twist to the deduction. All in all, I enjoyed this, and hope to play it more in the future.

I still think this is a pretty good game, it just happens that it was released towards the end of my groups love affair with One Night Werewolf (and maybe social deduction as a mechanism). On the rare occasion that we play one of those games now, we tend to favor old favorites (Werewolf, One Night, Dark Moon). This is good enough (and small enough) that I'm keeping it, and we'll see if social deduction ever experiences a renaissance for my play groups.

Last Year's List

Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game

8 subsequent plays. Current Rating: 8.5/10 [No Change]

This game certainly stood the test of time for an enjoyment/amount played perspective. It really hits on giving the feel of the classic Warhammer Quest in a simplified version. It has enough variability to get a few plays of the included campaign (I played through 2x and will probably play through at least once more). However due to the FFG and GW split, no more content will be released, which really puts a damper on the amount of play this game could have gotten (it could really use an additional campaign). So sadly this one will never live up to its potential but I am glad to own it and really enjoy the plays I did have.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 5 – United Kingdom & Pennsylvania

2 subsequent plays. Current Rating: 7.5/10 [No Change]

While I still haven't played this one as much as some of the other TTR maps I own, I have to say I think it ranks among the best. The PA side provides a nice simple variant that adds just a little bit to the base game mechanics. Plus the stock adds some additional tension to adding up the final score, which is fun. The UK side is probably one of the more complicated TTR maps (though still not too complicated) and thus adds some nice variety. I have only played that side once but I do look forward to exploring the different technology combinations still.

Lots of one-and-dones last May: I wouldn't play Progess: Evolution of Technology again if you paid me (assuming you didn't pay me very much), The Rivals for Catan was not of tremendous interest, and Dots & Boxes, Twigs, Entropy and Web of Flies were abstracts to the abstract mill. But a couple I've played again:

Delta (1 play then; 1 since) on second play proved a bit of a disappointment - its simplicity and determinacy makes it, I think, very easy for the newcomer to just get beaten down by fairly rote play, and I'm not sure I have the will to try and explore it further until it becomes interesting.

Crosshairs (1 play then; 3 since), on the other hand, I still suck it but it's good fun - perhaps partially down to the thematic overlay but the Powerboats-style movement is fun whatever game it shows up in and there's just enough rule weight to make it exacting without being fiddly.

But I made the right call way back then with Antiquity (1 play then; 8 since, 2 ongoing): I'm not become much better at it but it's a fundamentally enjoyable world of exploration, very easy to play online asynchronously. This must be what people used to play Farmville for.

Two new games for me this time last year. Neither were terrible, both were games I would happily play again, but equally neither were games I will seek out to play multiple times in the future. I've played one a second time, but not the other one.

Dilluvia Project - 1 play -  7
First Published 2015

I enjoyed this game both times I played it, but I did feel that I did pretty much exactly the same things the second time as the first one and although I'd play it a couple more times, I don't feel it has much replayability in the long-term.

Not played again:

Nippon - 1 play -  7

My pick last May was Tin Goose and I'm happy to say that it has absolutely stood the test of time. I still regularly throw it in my bag as a possible pick up game or something that I might try to coerce people to play before or after whatever multi-hour railroad game I'm also trying to get played. Tin Goose has the benefit of being easy to teach but with sufficient levers that experienced players can revel in trying to set traps or guess what other players have in their hands. It's also chaotic enough that you can have fun moments where someone can play nothing but event after catastrophic event. The downside of that chaos is that you will occasionally have a game that isn't terribly action packed and the game refocuses into just building the most efficient routes/tableau snore

Still, one of my favorite lighter weight games and one I'm very glad to own. I also played Splendor for the first time last May and honestly haven't given it a second thought.

I played four new-to-me games last May. I only own one of these, and that one (Pocket Battles: Macedonians vs. Persians) has only seen one play since then.

Of the others, two were played at work lunch hours: Innovation and Pandemic. I liked them both pretty well, and--different as they are--I probably preferred Innovation. But since I changed workplaces last June, I haven't played either since.

I played Credo during a trip, and this old and scarce game belonged to a friend who lives many states away. I'd love a chance to play again, but that was it for me.

I played this on BGA and didn't like it. I do think online is not the best way to experience this game as the auction elements would be much more interesting in person and hard to track/replicate the bidding experience. I'd be willing to play it face-to-face to form a fairer opinion of it, but I am sure I don't want to play it online again.

Quadropolis gets top spot. It is so nice, accessible and I am yet to play with someone who doesn't like it. It is not our most favourite game but we play pretty regularly on the expert mode with SO -
- sadly not so much with more people...

Stood the test of time

The winner of last year gets the second place in retrospect: Five Tribes. Although SO hates that game, it got played pretty regularly in my gaming group, which I am pretty happy about. However, I got Yamataï for my birthday this year and since SO loves it and it scratches the same itch for me, I think this will easily surpass Five Tribes as I am even considering selling FT...we'll see

Plays in May 2016: 1
Total plays: 7
Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization got a lot of love this past year for not really short game it is. I didn't really fell for it last May but as it turned out, it was mostly because we played 4-player and that is something I don't want to repeat any time soon. All the other plays since have been 2-player which is a much better player count It is now our favourite long civ building game

Plays in May 2016: 1
Total plays: 4
Sadly, my plays of Archipelago have not reflected how much I and SO like that game. Last time we played was back in July and at that time we played with our 2 friends that we played often with but they were not in the mood for such a game and don't want to try again But I hope they will turn one day

Played again and happy about it

Plays in May 2016: 1
Total plays: 2
We only played Shear Panic once more which is a great shame since I really liked it. That is why I like this thread - it always reminds me how long it's been since I played these great games!

Played again but don't wish to play again

My second play of Seasons was one of the worst play experience in my gaming "career" which made me not want to play it ever again

Didn't play again but wish to

I have no idea why we didn't play Rex: Final Days of an Empire again since everyone liked it! Will have to correct that!

My only new to me game last year was Bling Bling Gemstone and it has not done very well in the test of time. There are a couple reasons for this. The first is that its a bit of a pain to set up and put away. I suppose if 4 people were helping it could go fairly quickly but usually my kids have me do it and by the time I'm done they've often lost interest and want to do something else.

The second is that my kids are in Tae Kwon Do. They are used to hitting targets with a lot of force and have gotten less interested in simply tapping something to make a small bit fall off when they get to break through boards in their other hobby. They still like dexterity games and are always up for a game of Coconuts or Villa Paletti so it seems Gemstone was simply not a good fit for us.

Still my favourite from this time last year but sadly it has not been played since last May. Having a newborn around hasn't helped this one. While it does work just fine with 2, I feel like this would really shine with 4 players as it would really increase the competition for everything. It's still one that we're both incredibly fond of and want to get back out some time - it's just a matter of working around the little one's schedule.

T.I.M.E Stories: Under the Mask

Still my least favourite module for this game. The story was interesting, little to no combat, the puzzles were poor at best, and the path was incredibly linear. Running through the module after the first time just felt like torture.

Fleet

We've only played this one a few times but really enjoyed this light little game. It's one that we keep talking about playing again but it has been so long that we've forgotten the rules. I know it wouldn't take long to get back into it - it's just a matter of deciding to put a bit of time into this one instead of playing something else on our shelves. It'll find its way back to the table one day.

Last May I only learned a couple new games, one of which was Scythe. I have not had a chance to revisit it, so I can't speak to the test of time with it.

I also learned and purchased Telepathy which I still own and play with my family. This little deduction game is fun, thought the graphics are a bit dark, which can make the black marks harder to see. Still a good game.

A good month of stooding games!

STOOD

PERGAMON

This kept fresh and is still be best game of the month (not the most played, though, sitting with 5 plays). It is smart, quick to play, with some push-your-luck, indirect interaction and neat gameplay. I like it very much, and would definitely buy a copy if the opportunity shows up.

CASTELLION

Still isn't a great game, but it works well as a pastime - I have played it 50 times. There are loads of luck in it, but being so light and quick, I don't mind. And, I can't even use some strategies in order to achieve some formations.

GARDEN DICE

It is a smart game, with a good amount of interaction and decisions. It would be a pretty good game if lasted around 45-60 minutes, but usually it went for 90, which hurts it a little. Still, maybe we that play it too slowly. Anyway, Garden Dice works well, have neat ideas and is looks good.

WOULDN'T MIND PLAYING AGAIN

ABYSS

I wasn't marvelled by Abyss, nor craved for another play (and, surely, it didn't happened). Still, I would play it again - it works well enough. I sure don't want to own it, though. Luckly, since it was made available here in Brazil, the stores have them for local play.

DIDN'T STOOD

DRILLIT

Maybe I a'm being too harsh on this one, as I played a pre-production copy (but with final rules - still, something might have changed until it hit the market). It is a cooperative game with some borrowed ideas from other games and some new. What I found bad is that none of our plays were really balanced: in all we lose handly to the game. Yes, maybe we just sucked, and need to learn more the ins and outs. However, I haven't play it again to be sure.

FRANCIS DRAKE

Didn't want to play again - and my wish was granted. The owner sold the game, making even harder for a new play to happen. I will live just fine with this.

And that was it!

Regards,

This time last year I was back in the UK... and my gaming stepped up as a result... reviewing these plays, I kinda wanna go back again to get some boardgames in.

Codenames
Quote:

This is one of those games that everyone I know had played (mostly at UKGE last year). I'd been curious, but not really sought it out and been in few situations that would support it. Having played it, this is a solid game and I would love to see it played several times with the same group.

This has been played quite a bit, even with non-gamer work colleagues. It's grown in my esteem as a result and is a go to with non-gamers.

Spyfall Gaming Convention
Quote:

A couple of games of Spyfall at a friend's gaming day saw this expansion hit the table. I feel that this game is infinitely expandable and this promo backs that up, although there is an issue for newer players as it isn't on the booklet.

This is kinda fun, not really necessary but works well esp with other gamers.

This has gotten a couple of extra plays and I do enjoy it, not as wowed but it as I was initially.

Quote:

I was so intrigued by this game when I first heard of it that I had it on my wishlist for a while. I never got it but it seems one of my friends in the UK did so we played and it was fun. I think other games do some components better (Telestrations for a drawing fix, Spyfall for a traitorbluffer, Wits & Wagers for the guessing) but it was good enough I'd happily play again.

I'd like to try this again sometime, maybe I was a bit too harsh initially.

d10-6 Quadropolis (2016) - Still the pick of the litter and the only game from this month that has seen the table again (and only once, for the usual back-to-back standard and advanced plays). It's a fine game but it's just a tweaky way of acquiring the same old city tiles for the same old city scoring, and that way often leads to frustration. It appears clever but is enormously arbitrary. This doesn't make it not fun, but the game hasn't grabbed me and it's one I'll never request and would usually see what else is being played before sitting down.

The rest all remain unplayed, and that's okay. My opinion of them is unchanged and can be read at the original list item. As I mentioned then, the month was full of plays of games I already knew I liked and there is no shame or disappointment in not loving much new to me.

Last may I attended Geekway in St. Louis and had a LOT of new games to report. I listed Between Two Cities as my favorite of the month. It's still a great game and has gotten a handful of plays since then. When I have a large group for game night, this is one I'll lean towards. It really works well with a large group. Even tho you are only working with the person on your left and right, it's fun to hear all the talking and convincing going on around the table about why one tile would be better/worse than another. I still highly recommend this game.

I immediately bought Patchworkafter trying it out last year. My wife, my daughter, and I have played this game a lot since last year. I would say, of all the games mentioned in my post, this one has gotten the most plays since. It's a great two-player game. My wife really likes the puzzley aspect of the game. Trying to maximize the number/shape of the pieces on her board. I would buy this one all over again.

The only other game on my list to get significant play since last year is Agility. Another great two-player game. The theme of this really speaks to my wife and I. This one will not be leaving our collection and I see it getting played well into the future.

Last May, I was fortunate enough to play 5 new games and 1 new expansion. It looks like my opinions haven't mutated over the past year: so my list of decreasing order in current enthusiasm, with games before the expansion is the same as the old item.

The Little Prince: Make Me a Planet -- (5 last May; 1 play since) _7⅔_ (no change.)
(images by fizzle & styren)

I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been played more in the last few months: it's one I've brought with me on several occasions over the past several months. I think it's quite clever: a fine design.

Victory in the Pacific -- (1 last May; none since) _7⅔_ (no change.)
(images by madmanrick & Zerosum)

Sad this one hasn't made it back to the table. It's not terribly surprising: I've not many opportunities for longer 2p games (my primary 2p opponent - son #2 - prefers shorter and fluffier fare.) Still very impressed this one, despite my inability to get it to the table.

Argent: The Consortium -- (2 last May; none since) _7⅓_ (no change.)
(images by W Eric Martin & Viktula)

This one, I think, is more chaotic (and less clear; but that's as much a function of my relative unfamiliarity with the game as the presentation) than I might prefer. I think I'd play again; but I definitely haven't been pushing for it.

Pi mal Pflaumen -- (1 last May; none since) _7_ (no change.)
(images by Pegasus Spiele & Hexanauta)

I don't own this one - so that might explain the lack of recent play as much as anything. Added to that, I can't claim it's one I'm lobbying for strongly: the take-that elements didn't amuse me. I'd play if a friend needed my participation.

How to Host a Murder: Roman Ruins -- (1 last May; none since) _6_ (no change.)
(images by axarca & batesbj)

I don't think this is one that can be replayed: much of it is the mystery/uncertainty of trying to discern the culprit. It was entertaining (and I really enjoyed the company) but I can't imagine playing it again in the next five or six years!

Dominant Species: The Card Game – Promo Card Set -- (1 last May; none since) _7_ (no change.)
(images by Chad Jensen & chaddyboy_2000)

We rolled these into the last play of the base game. And I don't recall their being particularly significant in either direction: neither making the game significantly worse, nor significantly better. So: harmless and probably unnecessary.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Monday Lunch folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

No further plays although I'm not sure I'm really disappointed about it. I would like more plays of Dice Masters as that felt like the one with potential.

Meuterer
Seasons

No further plays and kind of mad about it. A guy at my game group even mentioned about getting more plays of Meuterer and so this should get dusted off again. The first play was uneven due to my own personal player aid, but the second play got better. Once it gets down smooth, this could threaten an ever tightening Top 50.

Seasons was just a rough go with burning through teaching the rules and just kind of going through it quick that a follow up feels required. Also, I really like my initial play despite it not being ideal. Another Top 50 candidate.

Five Tribes

Kind of something I like a lot despite knowing I'll forever be terrible at it, and then it simply dropped off the radar.

Baseball Highlights: 2045 – Super Deluxe Edition

One of the best new-to-mew for the year. Follow up plays via iPad were rough because I think the app wasn't figuring out how the series was going correctly, and I honestly felt kind of stuck in how well I would deal with other teams. Further plays will be done solo with my own copy as I have far more content than I do on the app.

7 Wonders Duel

Only one new game last month - but a good one. I picked up 7 Wonders Duel at the recommendation of my Geek Chat League (yay Beehive!). This was recommended to me by several members as being a good little two player game that offered interesting decisions but wasn't too complicated.

Well, they were bang right.

Mrs Fish and I have really enjoyed the game so far and I can see us getting a lot more play in the years to come. Really good gameplay, quite distinct from the original 7 Wonders, and great art. The only minor quibble is that the cardstock could be of better quality but that can easily be fixed with a bit of sleeving.

This is now:

Very pleased with my purchase of 7 Wonders Duel it gets regular play and is about the right weight and length of a couple of games with Mrs Fish after the Little Fish are abed. I did suggest that she might like the 7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon expansion for her birthday but she opined the base game was enough for her and that we "had enough games already". Weird, eh.

Anyway, no regrets at all about 7 Wonders Duel and one that will be retained in the collection. I have every confidence this will continue to hit the table of honour for years to come.

Recommended.
