You are once again invited to take part in the monthly Golden Turtleback miniature painting contest.

The contest has kept its original name in honour of its founder David Anderson (turtleback). It's usually run by Cerith Morgan-Jones (Bastion of insanity). I'm merely keeping the contest going until Cerith returns.

Please give this geeklist a thumb to help get it to the front page, and click on the images you thumb and give the actual images thumbs up as well !

The more contestants the better! New painters are more than welcome!

RULES

1) Add the game of the miniature(s) you painted as an item to the list. Insert the image(s) in the body of the entry. Use the format [imageid=xxxxxmedium] where xxxxx is the id of the picture.

2) The image you submit must have been uploaded during May 2017. Gallery images are okay but submitted images are preferred.

3) One entry per person. You may submit images of a single miniature or a group at your discretion.
You may, however, use either:
up to two 'normal' pictures of your entry, usually, the front and back of the miniature(s)
OR
one image of a montage/collage of your entry.

4) You are the artist. Please do not submit miniatures painted by someone else.

5) Make of the mini, scale and paints you used are appreciated.

6) The contest will end on 30 June 2017. The winner will be the picture with the most thumbs. Winners will appear in the next months’ list.

7) Users can thumb as many entries as they like.

In the interests of maintaining a level playing field for all entrants, if an entry does not conform to the above rules, it will be removed. New contestants will be notified beforehand so that they can edit their entry or submit another one that meets the criteria.

PRIZES

I'm reliant on tips to offer prizes. Any tips received will awarded as follows:

1st place: 35%, plus an exclusive microbadge! Microbadge: Golden Turtleback Painted Miniature Monthly Contest winner
2nd place: 25%
3rd place: 15%
Encouragement Awards: 25% (will be given to non-placing worthy entries with a bias to new participants.)

One random thumber will receive 5 !

28mm Unarmoured Samurai Miniature from Bac Ninh Miniatures:

Board Game: Ronin: Skirmish Wargames in the Age of the Samurai

This miniature was painted with Vallejo paints, Vallejo and old GW washes and Army painter inks.

The Kanji on his sleeve reads 'Tosa' - the ancient name for Kochi Prefecture. There were four of these guys in the pack and I intend to paint them up with the ancient names of each of the four prefecture of Shikoku on their sleeve patch.

Here is an Arcadia Quest Beastman that I converted into Ganon from "The Legend of Zelda" video games for a model swap (the recipient said they liked "old school SNES").
This guy had a couple of pieces cut off, hands re-positioned, a few bits from the parts bin, and a little bit of green stuff work. He was painted with Reaper paints, P3 ink, Citadel washes, and Secret Weapon washes.

I dragged out some old miniatures to create some Hunters of the Wild for my elf army. By old, I mean 1995 Marauder Miniatures Dryad models. Poor things had been sprayed black for 22 years but now they are ready for their place on the battlefield.

From gallery of EyeLost
From gallery of EyeLost

For a quick job they came out rather nice. Basic Beasty brown coat, highlighted with an almost khaki colour called Old wood and a drybrush of bleached bone around the edges (all Vallejo). Some green for the shrubs, dark green for the claws and teeth and darker wood patches for the deeper wood. Then a quick painted on dip of Army Painter Strong Tone and affixing to the base.

To help fill in the bases I added some Reaper Bones spiders and beetles. The spiders are painted as a Redback and Huntsman. The base is the over-the-top green garden that my Elf army is based with (so lots of flowers and green grass).

Wrong Eye, lesser Gatorman warlock and Snapjaw, heavy Gatorman warbeast

Quote:
The bokor Wrong Eye emerges from the swamp like a shrewd, reptilian oracle. All who live in the bayous know the legend of the gatorman and hope to avoid his capricious wrath and his guardian Snapjaw.

- Iron Kingdoms Lore
Wrong Eye and Snapjaw are metal miniatures by Privateer Press
Size is about 40 mm (Wrong Eye) to 50mm (Snapjaw)
Painted with Army Painter products
Basing with Milliput and Stillwater

The coat on Wrong Eye is actually much less saturated, but for some weird reason he looks like Lady Gagas bacon dress on all pictures I take...
The other colors are pretty accurate.

Another test paint for my Blood Bowl dwarves.

Board Game: Blood Bowl (2016 Edition)

Lesson learned: From now on, only the trollslayers will be red-haired. Orange/red doesn't work so well with the other players.

Size : about 25mm tall.
Painted mostly with Vallejo Model and Citadel.

Edit: And it's still mounted on my custom rotating base with holes for skill tabs. Here's a quick and -pretty- dirty video before painting.

This is (at least for a while) the last month with SoB. I decided to show the Core Box Heroes this month, hope you enjoy:

Board Game: Shadows of Brimstone: City of the Ancients

The most part of the minis were painted with Vallejo Model and Game Air colours, using airbrush. I went for a dusty and travel-worn look especially on Donovan (the U.S. Marshal) and Pepe (the Bandido), while the other two have a cleaner, more "upscale" look to them.
The bases were done with Vallejo texture pastes, as well as some grass bushels from Green Stuff World.

I suppose it is a good thing I chose not an ISD last month, otherwise this might be a touch boring. Very pleased with this overall, especially the engines (I'm never that happy with the engines but these came out great, imo.)

It is about 8-9" long, so many panels...

Used 99% vallejo, mostly model colours (many...), a few watercolor pencils (black/purples/browns, for some very light staining, deepening shadows a bit).

This was my first month learning to paint. I started with all of the storm troopers, since they seemed to be the easiest. Each set I painted a little bit different, but I think this is my favorite troop.

I tried adding battle damage to this group, and was pretty happy with the result, especially considering my lack of experience. These were painted with GW colors and washes.

Waldgeist by Wyrd Miniatures, heroic 32mm. It's a treeman. Thoughts and not-too-exact paint diary in the spoiler.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Not my 'best painted' figure of the month. Initially (and possibly still) not my favourite of the two waldgeists I painted. But I saw a tree recently and became super happy about how I got this to turn out

This was painted a while ago and due to being a quick "get it done" type of paintjob I struggle to remember paint specifics, apologies for that.

Main bark:
Basecoat/undercoat was brown, I think it was AP Oak Brown. Might've been VMC SS Camo Black Brown but it looks a bit too light for that.
Green is AP Army Green, probably mixed with VMC Ivory for highlights. May have also used AP Necrotic Flesh to highlight.
Went over the whole thing with a brown (possibly green mixed in) AP wash at some point.

Red bark bits:
Diluted paint to wash consistency and applied to random areas. Pretty sure it was AP Chaotic Red. Then dotted in pink dots with a self-made mix, red & white, maybe some purple to tint it a tad. Tried using a thin metal rod to apply this but ended up doing most with a brush. I should probably invest in some toothpicks.

Purple shrooms:
AP Alien Purple basecoat, highlighted by adding VMC Ivory. Glazed the whole thing with VGC Violet Ink.

__
Some may remember the birch Waldgeist I shared in the painting thread.
That was before this one, felt a bit exhausted and just wanted to get this one "done" so I went for a more standard brown tree look. I did look at some trees before I did this and got some ideas on how to get a bit of variety in the simple paint scheme. Did all of that pink/purple since Malifaux is a weird place like that.

Shadow Dragon from Descent 2e. We'll call it done since it hasn't been touched in a month and a half.

I had a lot of fun with the glowing effect and trying to capture that light on the rest of the figure. The figure is very large, about 3" tall.

The white and black are Citadel and the neon yellow is Vallejo Fluo Yellow. I did quite a lot of work trying to fill the cracks where the wings were attached and I was pretty happy with it. Lots of trimming flashing too.

Thanks for looking!
