"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php (Note: Due to a recent change in BGG script, this tool has ceased working for users with large collections of several hundred/thousands of games)

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

If you'd like to check out other fun monthly Geeklists, BaSL has a comprehensive list at his monthly Most Played Geeklist, the most recent iteration of which can be found here: Your Most Played Game GeekLists - Announcement Thread

Railways of the World - Dust Level: 1 Year, 8 Months - I've been playing some of the expansions recently, including the new Railways of Nippon at Origins, so the base game has gotten dusty. But felt like breaking out the Mexico map with the wife. She clobbered me by beating me to every single delivery bonus card.

Castle Assault - Dust Level: 1 Year, 7 Months - After both my characters died in the same Pathfinder: Skull and Shackles scenario, I decided to take a break from that one and dust this one off. I backed the expansion and am looking forward to the new solitaire material, but I had to finish up the solitaire campaign from the base game first. I started going through it with the Humans deck and was able to complete the base game campaign this month and will dive into the expansion material with the Humans deck next.

Sylvion - Dust Level: 1 Year, 7 Months - Taught a friend how to play this this month. After figuring out the strategy to this game, the base game seems super easy now. I need to incorporate the included expansion material and see if it can re-interest me in this game.

La Granja - Dust Level: 1 Year, 6 Months - This is a game I've been thinking about for some time now and wishing I played more. Took the first step to making that happen by teaching a friend it this month and re-familiarizing myself with how it works in the process.

Bora Bora - Dust Level: 1 Year, 3 Months - I feel shame for letting a great Feld get dusty.

Came up due to it's quick teaching time when our 4th was a little delayed. We played very open so the scores were really high.

In the Rio Grande room at GenCon. Most of the people hadn't played before and I needed a rules refresher. It seemed like we just milled about for a bit and then someone won. Kind of anti-climactic. We got a rule wrong at first, then decided equal turns with the wrong rule and then go from there.

I prefer Roll these days, but Race was game that I somehow found myself playing. Also in the Rio Grande room. I think I was the most experienced player at the table and the Aliens insisted upon being my strategy. Easy win. Base game only. I still like Roll.

I've begun gaming monthly with a new group. After a game of Keyflower, they brought out something more simple to finish off the night. I recalled playing but not the rules. It was a fine time; nothing too special but a decent diversion.

So over the summer my regular Friday Night game has been dwindling. Some nights only one person has shown up. Well it had to happen. A few weeks ago it was 100% no show. While laying around not doing anything, my two girls show up with a could games and said 'Dad how about playing some games with us.' So, we sat down and played a couple games. This one was a favorite of theirs when they were younger. I knew it had been a long time, but didn't realize it had been 8 years. I wish I had gotten a picture of the three of us playing So that I could have had a then and now picture.

I was surprised to find a picture here of that last game eight years ago.

This is one of those games that really needs the right group - but there were almost tears of laughters when we got this back out. With the right group it shines - just be ready for improv story silliness.

Saboteur - 1 play
First Published 2004

Current Rating -  7
Hmmmm, this on the other hand can fade back into obscurity in my collection. Saboteur 2 improves on it in every way and the guy I will normally play with has both 1 and 2. Might try and get rid of my copy.

The Uncharted Seas - 1 play
First Published 2008
3 years, 8 months, 14 days
Current Rating -  6
So I had a couple of plays of Spartan Games games this month and then... they declared that they where closing. Coincidence? Uncharted Seas is the rules lighter game but our fleets weren't large enough for a proper game. Still enjoyable even if my famed luck with dice (when playing miniatures wargames - it's an oddly specific superpower) abandoned me.

Dystopian Wars - 1 play
First Published 2010
3 years, 1 month, 25 days
Current Rating -  6
Dystopian Wars is far more complicated - overblown to a degree. We were trying to use the 2.0 rules (the book for which is a mess). The game was quite fun, but... the rules do leave a lot to be desired. Hoping that the community (is it still a thing?) manages to turn rules into something more streamlines. Or at least readable. This is coming across harsher than I mean to, but it's a pain to spend so much time referencing rules. I'm planning on playing X-Wing with Ragados soon and I feel the comparison between the Spartan stuff and it will be rather unfavourable.

Zombicide - 1 play
First Published 2012
2 years, 11 months, 20 days
Current Rating -  8
Huh, has it really been that long since we played Zombicide? I guess so - we used to play Season 1 a lot, and burnt out by the time Season 2 came out and never quite recovered (despite three members of the group kickstarting Season 3 - myself included). I still enjoy Zombicide but I have learnt to be more careful with mission selection (no cars).

Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan - 1 play
First Published 2011
1 year, 11 months, 10 days
Current Rating -  7
Ah Sekigahara - one of my forays into wargames. A two player game against V (as per normal). I launched the first successful assault on Osaka. If successful means won the battle, then failed to hold on long enough to win the war eventually having my general killed in what can best be described as the most brutal game of Sekigahara we have ever played. The dead lined the edge of the board. Really enjoy this game in small doses.

Tragedy Looper - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 9 months, 28 days
Current Rating -  8
Tried to introduce Ragados to this... I think I saw his brain melting out of his ears. Not his style of game - I really enjoy playing this but two player isn't the way to play this (it might work with two people who really know the game, but introducing someone this way doesn't work). I also want to play with a group beyond the first steps scripts.

Dominion - 1 play

Ah back to the original deck builder. It's nice to return to the original from time to time. It still has a certain something that others can't quite capture.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 5 – United Kingdom & Pennsylvania - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 2 months, 8 days
The Pennsylvania side of this map pack. I like the stock options and this game demonstrated the dangers of either over-focusing on a couple of companies (even the biggest two) and not playing enough attention to them. By which I mean I stormed to the lead owning a few of the smaller companies and grabbing enough to score for most of the rest.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 4 – Nederland - 2 plays
First Published
1 year, 1 month, 21 days
Two two player games of this, one with the bridge AI and one without. The bridge AI felt really mean, but not as random as I feared (it seemed to link it's routes up quite well). Lead to howls as it took that crucial route (often in the colour we had been collecting. I think the bridge AI is a better two player variant (otherwise there is little to no competition), but I think this is a poor two player map.

Counting this though the follow up play was with the second edition. There are a couple differences but the basics remain largely the same. It looks good when its completed but still remains a game that while I respect, I don't find much fun in playing. Often, one is uncertain how to proceed early and then the end game gets nasty and challenging as space becomes more challenging.

Always fun for a change of pace. I do prefer the plastic totem over the wooden totem that caused a few injuries and near injuries from falling apart or such. It was clear my two opponents had never played before and the game ended quickly.

Lots of dusty games this month - mostly ones I played with my children, as its school holidays and I was trying to find a few different games to play with them for our daily games session - but also a few with adults, between the newer games that seem to take up most of our gaming time right now (Terraforming Mars in particular!).

Keep Talking - Dust Level 18 months

This game at least had a good reason for not being played for most of that time - I lost it! We received it for the Christmas before last, played it, and then when I wanted to play it a month or so later I couldn't find it anywhere. Eventually I gave it up for lost and stopped looking, but when I took all the games out to paint the games room in June it turned up, hidden behind a Time's Up expansion we don't tend to play much! I now need to add a photo to BGG of it - which I was going to do before I lost it!

Wild World Lotto - Dust Level 16 months

I made a list of older games we hadn't played in a while, in a possibly vain hope that we could get rid of some of the more babyish games we own, now the children have grown out of them. However, apparently Lotto still appeals when you're 7, and we've played it three times this month. This particular Lotto version was always a favourite when the children were younger!

Jet Set - Dust Level 16 months

I've been playing this mainly with 2 players recently, and playing with 3 reminded me how much better it works at that player count. I think I shall make more effort to get this out when we have 3 players in future. The problem is, most people don't know it, so I always have to teach new players - this time I was playing with three people familiar with the game, and it was really close.

You Robot - Dust Level 15 months

I was a bit sceptical when I looked at the recommended age on this, thinking there was no way my 7 year old would be able to manage it, but as I'm trying to teach my children more unusual games thought I'd try it anyway, and it was actually a hit, played three times this month. I find this hard to table with adults now we're not playing party games as much, so playing these sorts of games with my kids instead is great!

Eurorails - Dust Level 15 months

Definitely wins the award for the game with the most actual dust on it - it was really dusty!! All the crayon rails hit this list when they get played, as we have quite a few and cycle through the different maps in turn, but don't play as many times in a year as we have different crayon rail maps! Unlike something like Power Grid, each map counts as a different game!

Industrial Waste - Dust Level 15 months

After our last play we put this on our trade list, but it hasn't traded, so we continue to play it from time to time. It's quite enjoyable for the odd play, just not particularly exciting.

Mice and Mystics - Dust Level 14 months

I was playing this through with adults, but got frustrated by it, but was looking for something different to play with my children this month while they were on school holidays so tried this, and they loved it, and we've now played through the first three missions, in four plays. The cool bits and story really appeal to them.

Don't Say It - Dust Level 14 months

Haven't played this for a while with the children - the last play was with adults - so I think they've forgotten it (it's a children's version of Taboo), but my daughter really enjoyed it when I pulled it out this month. Sadly my youngest ruined the first game with a tantrum when he found it hard to describe a word, but we managed to work out a 3 player variant so we could play it again later in the month.

Beep! Beep! - Dust Level 14 months

The children used to love this one, but they haven't played it in a while, so I reminded them of it, and this time it didn't go over so well, so it's now on the trade list.

Carcassonne - Dust Level 13 months

Just snuck onto the list this month. Now we're playing Terraforming Mars pretty much exclusively for 2 player gaming, these older games I play mostly with just 2 aren't coming out so often. This time we played this at games night with a new gamer who had heard of it and wanted to learn it. One I'll continue to keep, but just doesn't table that often any more.

Tell Me: The Grand Quiz Game - Dust Level 13 months

We don't play this with the spinner (which I've lost the top of anyway!), but instead with a "bomb" like in Pass the Bomb - actually the machine from Cranium Conga - which we pass around and use the categories for what you have to say when the bomb is passed round. I usually play this with my children, and did this month, although my youngest dropped out when he couldn't think of something for one of the categories. It was hard to say how much they enjoyed it - they were laughing madly while playing, but then asked to stop halfway through.

Jumbo & Co - Dust Level 13 months

I can't believe Mausen appeared on this list, as it used to be one of my children's favourites, and is also a favourite filler of a gamer friend of mine. I think the kids forgot about it, preferring games with more in them nowadays, and as it was on their shelf not the filler shelf, adults forgot about it too. It only just snuck on, by just under a week over a year between plays!

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

After soccer last week Little Fish the Elder and I went to a local games cafe and amongst other things we played . Not bad, but not as much fun with two as with three or four. Still, good to play again. Would like to play with more than two next time.

Hadn't played San Juan for ages but it was suggested at one of the work lunchtime gaming session so it hit the table. I quite like this game but it's nowhere near the experience offered by Race for the Galaxy. Alas, all the other lunchtime crew folk prefer San Juan over Race for the usual reasons 'too hard to lean the icons & etc' so might be playing a bit of San Juan in the future. Not my optimal choice, but not a terrible thing either.

A friend of mine who plays other games on Yucata with me invited me to dive into this classic worker placement game.

I remembered why I was only so-so on it, and that's the feed your workers requirement. Not that I necessarily automatically dislike games games with upkeep needs, but it detracts from the experience for me.

I'm frankly surprised it's been this long since I've played it. It has such a cool auction system, which really needs to be used again in a different game somewhere (and I'm sure it has). One of Knizia's best.

We burned through a 30 turn game of this in about three hours, and it was close. Helps to just send it to the next player while you dither about what to buy and sell.

Looks like I've managed to play four things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Kogge -- (1 this month; 1 play 6 years ago) _7⅔_
(images by themilkcrate & msaari)

I found this fascinating on my first play. And didn't play well.

And, I guess, nothing changed on the second play. Still fascinating. Still didn't play well.

It's a delightful game - though one possibly wants to make allowances for the crudity of the physical object. I'd be delighted to play this sufficiently often that it's in no danger of ever reappearing on this list.

Eiertanz -- (1 this month; 42 plays 4 years ago) _7_
(images by ssummerer & bmayer)

Profoundly silly; and consigned to "outdoor play" for more than ten years, now. Fun to have a gang of young people around where playing it was both feasible and desirable. I'm sure it could work with adults, too; but I don't often think of it - which is likely my failing rather than that of the game.

Europa Tour -- (2 this month; 6+ plays 36 months ago) _6⅓_
(images by PzVIE & msaari)

This was my Dad's; and it's one that I only play when visiting back in the Home Country. Much of the gap is the opportunity, I think; and some of it is the aesthetics of Europa Tour - where countries are labelled in German and the native tongue of that country. My kids found the labels quite unsettling when they were tiny; but they're a bit more philosophical about such things today.

Clash of Cultures (with Civilizations) -- (1 this month; 5 plays 32 months ago) _7⅔_
(images by W Eric Martin & haslo)

Sad it was so long for this one, too. It's a really cool game; and, moreover, one that I play better when I've had a recent opportunity. It's a charming game, and I fear that I'm only exercising a fraction of its dynamics when (like this most recent play) I'm trying again to come to grips with the ruleset.

Definitely hoping for more play of this one soon, before the lessons of the most recent game fade.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.
