Hello, my name is Gregg and I think I'm a specialty dice-a-holic.

<hi, Gregg.>

I don't know where the attraction started, but counting pips didn't cut it for me anymore...at first I tried games with massive amounts of traditional dice, but that only lasted for a while...ultimately I ended up looking for edgier stuff: weird mechanics, symbols, colors...you name it.

So maybe you're like me and you can't resist a strange set of dice and/or mechanics...sometimes the goofier the better...

This is my first GEEKLIST, so be kind.

I absolutely encourage you to add your favorite specialty-dice games and anecdotes the more, the merrier

It all started innocently enough: a few high school friends and I stayed up late playing Star Wars: the Roleplaying Game. at first it seemed straightforward...a handful of six or so regular pipped dice...then one handful became two and before I knew it, I was steam-shoveling boatloads of the suckers onto the table - dice knocking over minis and landing in drinks

But hordes of dice wasn't enough - then there came altered mechanics: die-capping, rolling one die to represent many and the introduction of the magical, mystical WILD DIE. I think maybe Only GW did more with the regular six-sided dice than WEG.

...speaking of GW - this is where is all started to get weird for me. No longer did the little cubes have pips, they had skulls. Not just decorative skulls as 'ones' but skulls with actual game signifigance...and shields: white shiedls and black shields and if you're afflicted like me, you know what all this means and you are beginning to nod along and whisper 'I've been there, too.'

given my experience in the late '80s with HQ, it came as no surpirse that I picked up HS as soon as it hit the shelves. I mean all of us HQ junkies were suffering from withdrawl... Advanced Heroquest was a joke and Warhammer Quest was just a watered-down of Warhammer what were we to do? we wanted our skulls and shields back.

And then they came back...from practically the same developers. This time without GW's trademarked universe and all the trappings of a great Amerigame...I mean this thing was a toybox full 'o goodies...now if we could just get the skulls and shields back on to the same dice...

Well let's talk about Euros, more specifically, let's talk about Euro games that actually use dice. More specific than that let's talk about CATAN.

I love Catan. It introduced me to a different type of boardgaming. It truly is a gateway game of legend - I've yet to (personally) meet anyone who doesn't like it.

I've seen it get knocked on this site, because it uses dice...I love the fact that it uses dice...in fact, I LOVED IT MORE when they added goofier, colored, abstract-symbol-clad dice in the C&K expansion...It's not just a simple resource roll anymore, it's a story: a story of resource production, possible societal advancement and warns us of the ever-present threat of invaders...all in one roll.

...now that's not just great mehcanics, that's poetry.

and that sort of art deserves a pedestal, a shrine, a monument of some sort...

...and what a shrine it is.

It's a rite of passage for gamers. You know you have crossed a threshold when you have the desire to buy or build one of these. Mine is built out of Rokenbok bits - a sort of German construction toy - it makes a wonderful clicking sound when the dice tumble inside, but Legos work just as well and foamcore and mattebaord and acrylic. I love looking at dice towers that others have created...it makes me realize that I'm not alone in my insanity.

but who needs a dice tower, when the rules require you hold the dice approximately 30cm in the air and drop them into the box lid, hoping that they land in the squares labeled 'hit' within the 3x3 grid printed on the inside. Yes, I'm totally serious about all this.

And thus begins the Games Workshop section of our list.

Ahhhh Games Workshop, the company that brought so, so many specialty dice into my life. Scatter dice. Sustained fire dice. Dice with words. Dice with symbols that replaced the dice with words.

and let's not forget mechanics: D6 charts, D66 Charts...so many possibilities from so simple an accessory.

GW taught me valuable lessons like a '1' is always a miss and a '6' is always a hit, no matter the circumstances. It's heartwarming to think about, isn't it?

Right around the time that several GW games went to third editions, a strange thing happened. Specialty dice started showing up everywhere. GW icons like SPACE HULK were shipping with new rules and new dice. GW fans were in an uproar, but not me - forget all that counting, bring on the abstraction!

I have never spent so much money on games like I did with GW games...until the age of the collectible minis game

I waited until these had hit rock bottom until I picked them up. I had been a fan of the Shadowrun RPG and a fan of CLIX games. This seemed to be a dream recipe for me...and it was...except the scale is um...huge, the figures are akward and there are various quality issues.

HOWEVER: the dice mechanics of this game are kind of cool. Now i just need to adapt them to a minis game...hmmmmm

Another pivotal game for me has been MEMOIR. For years I'd been looking for a good, light wargame. I tried Axis & Allies Miniatures but it didn't do it for me. Then I tried MEMOIR. It played quick, it was fun, it required (some degree of) strategy and best of all, it used COOL, COOL DICE to run virtually everything...all from those 5 semi-ambiguous symbols

So that's the story of my addiciton so far, please add to this list, so I can sleep knowing there are others like me...and more importantly, so I can learn about EVEN MORE games with cool dice and weird dice mechanics.

So if you think Risk is a dicefest, well then this version really boils it down even more and that's it -- just dice rolling. And this is a Knizia dice game so this might not be T&E but it is fun for "conquering the world in 20 minutes." The dice are nice quality, and the game is packaged in a spiffy dice bowl.

I always keep a set in my pocket, wrapped up in a bandana scoring track. For $4.98, you can't really go wrong with this one.
