"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php (Note: Due to a recent change in BGG script, this tool has ceased working for users with large collections of several hundred/thousands of games)

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

If you'd like to check out other fun monthly Geeklists, BaSL has a comprehensive list at his monthly Most Played Geeklist, the most recent iteration of which can be found here: Your Most Played Game GeekLists - Announcement Thread

Deep Space D-6 - Dust Level: 1 Year - Thought I'd break this out again and try to beat the game with the current ships before the expansion arrives. I forgot how challenging this one was!

Nations - Dust Level: 1 Year - Surprised this one got dusty as this is probably my favorite civilization builder and the wife loves it too. We tried out a couple of the nations we hadn't tried yet from the expansion and will likely get this to the table some more in the near future because there are still several others we haven't tried yet.

Colt Express - Dust Level: 1 Year, 2 Months - Played in a tournament at Tri-Con to try to win the sweet playmat but came in second of course, which is what I always do at tournaments. It's too chaotic a game for me to seek out too often, but it's a fun time every now and then if I don't take it too seriously.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia - Dust Level: 1 Year, 7 Months - Looks like my small expansion maps have gotten dusty in the cycle of TtR playing. Asia is still a great map because of the challenge the mountains offer.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 2 – India & Switzerland - Dust Level: 1 Year, 7 Months - Still my favorite expansion map. Both of these are amazing and India still has the most interesting end game bonus reward.

Caylus - Dust Level: 2 Years, 8 Months - Every now and then I have to remind myself why I don't play this game online. It just takes way too long for a turn-based game and I still have no idea how to win this game. I need to remember to stick to face-to-face plays of Caylus in the future.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 3 – The Heart of Africa - Dust Level: 3 Years, 7 Months - Wow, this particular expansion got really dusty. It's probably the most challenging map due to the way the colors are laid out on the board. it's also one of the most unique feeling ones.

Diamant - Dust Level: 4 Years, 2 Months - I was curious how this game would feel being played online turn-based. Turns out it's not that great of an experience. I've never been that big of a fan of this game, but this is another one I will stick to face-to-face in the future.

Fighting Fantasy Battle Cards - Dust Level: 8 Years - Taking a stab in the dark at how long it's been since I've played this one since the last time I played was before I started logging plays. But this feels about right. If I recall correctly, the last time I played was when I brought it to a church game night, which looking back on was a poor choice. But recently, I was a guest on a local podcast and I thought it would make entertaining audio to play this terrible game live. This time I made a good choice - it was a real hoot. This really is one of the worst games ever designed, but the scratch-and-slay combat system is at least an interesting historical tidbit.

Village - 1 play

This is one of my favorite euro games - it is so smooth and well done, with interaction in the proper amount, to not feel mean nor solitaire. I like it even better with the Port expansion (which we didn't have for this play), but without it, Village still perfoms well.

Medici - 1 play
First Published 1995
2 years, 2 months, 18 days

After this play - which was a very good one - I changed my rating for it, raising it to 8, and lowering my Modern Art rating. For quite some time I considered MA to the superior, but MA has a big issue with is mechanics, as the money go from one player to the other, meaning it suffers too much with bad plays that unbalance the game. Medici runs faster, accomodates more players (up to 6), is more tense and balanced, with a tad of luck to spice things.

Quartz - 1 play

One of those games I can play or don't, I don't really mind either way.

Leaping Lemmings - 1 play
First Published 2010
1 year, 5 months, 27 days

This game brings the worst in people, which is why is so fun with the right people. Since we do have the kind of people to play this within my group, the game was rather fun.

Automobile - 1 play
First Published 2009
1 year, 3 months, 29 days

I played two fine rounds. In the third, I needed the person that allows you to immediately build a factory. I thought this person was Ford, but no! This simple mistake made my game went south, and in the final round I had to go all in in order to have a shot at winning - but ended up losing big, and finished in a quite behind third of five.

Last Will - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 2 months, 10 days

Another one of my favorites. I have a pretty good record of win-loss in this one, but this play was a loss due to a mistake I did in remembering the rules: I considered that you can't go to 0 (zero) money still with a property - but you can, just can't go bellow. This little thing would allow me to win with around $4 to spare.

And that was it!

Regards,

This was a big and pleasant surprise. My wife was talking to a friend of hers named Patti, who said she was very interested in WWII history. So I showed her this game, and we played a scenario and she loved it! I hadn't played the game for one day short of 11 years; I mostly play Commands & Colors: Ancients when I'm looking for a game in this family. But there's nothing like an interested learner to make a game fun. We played the Pegasus Bridge scenario, the first one in the base game, and she won as the British. She then went out and bought a copy.

Joe Huber really likes this game and suggested it. I've never quite been able to wrap my mind about how to do well in the game, and indeed Joe beat us all by about 30 VP. But it's charming in its own way.

[Edit: I only include games that are at least 5 years dusty. I've been gaming for 53 years now.]

Over five years... I had facilitated my brother-in-law getting this as a gift about 4 years ago. After several failed attempts of me teaching this game to him and running out of time to finish (he was making it way tougher than needed to be), he finally made it through an entire game. In the end he said it was more fun than he realized in his previous attempts.

My work-mate who was my primary partner playing this game moved to another job, so it took me just over a year to get this out again. I find it amazing that a game that can be such a bear to wrap your head around in the beginning, is so easy to recall the rules to after an extended layoff.

Love this game as a filler. It got a huge round of boos last year when I brought it out at work. Since then it's become almost legendary as a joke for the worst game I've ever brought out. Due to it still being talked about, some people wanted to give it another try. I don't think they'll openly admit it, but I think they actually enjoyed it this time around.

My first play of Race for the Galaxy wasn't really enough to get a feel for the game. After a long hiatus, these second and third plays had me feeling more competent. I still haven't read the rules, so I feel a certain tentativeness in my orientation. But I managed to have real strategies and tactics in my more recent plays.

Grimwold's tool isn't working for me at the moment. This is much harder to do manually. None of the games are very dusty; they're all less than two years. All but 7 Wonders Duel were undusted at Buckeye Game Fest.

Homeworlds
1 year 10 months 3 days
I wanted to play Giant Homeworlds at BGF. We made it happen. I'm not actually much of a Homeworlds fan, it being a bit too chess-like for me, but the Homeworlds Theater videos by Andy Looney and John Cooper have been interesting and informative. Clearly, I'm still not a good Homeworlds player. I was amused that everyone saw the giant pyramids and thought we were playing Zendo.

Ninety-Nine
1 year 6 months 1 day
A trick taking game for three players played with regular playing cards. The guy who brought it out before brought it out again. I spent the first half of the game (at least) wishing I knew how to bid.

7 Wonders Duel
1 year 5 months 12 days
I don't often play two player games. If I did, I could see myself playing this more. As it is, I haven't really played it enough to decide if I really like it or not.

Hanabi
1 year 5 months 9 days
Very weird that this went dusty. It's one of my most played games. It just kind of fell off the radar inexplicably. I haven't played many games recently with the people I mentally associate with this game. I wonder if they're still playing it.

Star Fluxx
1 year 1 month 9 days
Just barely dusty. I brought it out as part of my "Quest for 33". I needed 1 play to get it to 33 plays, which puts me 1 game away from having an h-index of 33. The Extended Stats tool thinks I'm already there now, but it counts Unpublished Prototype and I don't.

A bit of a cheat because while I played Concordia for the first time in over three years, it was played on the "new to me" Corsica board. Even with the smaller map and the more competition/interaction in the cities, I still found the two-player game to be relatively flat.

It's an elegant game (as many have reminded me) and quite easy to teach, but I just don't find it all that interesting to play. So it might just end up collecting dust for another three years - unless I'm looking for something to play with casual players.

This month was odd. A lot of games where I haven't played them in quite some time - except I have, just in a slightly different way.

First however, one that truly haven't been played in a long time:
Shadows over Camelot: Dust Level 7 Years 3 months

Dominion: Dust level 1 Year
* Not very dusty, but it crosses my threshold of 1 year, so here it is.

Then,we get to those who have some sort of note around them:
Ascension: Apprentice Edition: Dust Level 3 Years 5 months
* However, in that time I've played alot of OTHER versions of Ascension, just not the Apprentice edition.

Ticket to Ride: Märklin: Dust Level 3 years 11 months
* Again, I've played a lot of Ticket to Ride in the meantime.

And finally, new games that aren't.
Robo Rally Dust Level 1 Year
* New, because it's the new version. Dusty because it's more than a year since I played the old version.

Nippon Rails
* OK, this was my first play of this particular game. But it's noteworthy as it's more than 4 years since I last played ANY Empire Builder Rail Games and these games are so similar that they could just as well be just a single game with a lot of expansion maps.

Quite a few dusty games, but only one that was more than 2 years dusty - the others were just games we own that aren't favourites, but still table just over every year or so.

Pictureka! - 2 years 7 months

I think after this play I've decided to definitely get rid of this. It's an ok idea, and some fun for a few plays, but it really isn't that balanced, and it's never going to get chosen over most other games we own.

Maya - 18 months

I do wish I could get this to the table more often, and given how much it was enjoyed by a couple of the players I introduced it to this play, maybe I can.

Strasbourg - 18 months

Not strictly mine, but belongs to one of my games group and has a permanent spot on our board games shelves. I made an effort to play it this month, but it just doesn't come out as much as other Feld games that people prefer.

Meander - 17 months

It's a novel idea, rolling marbles down tiles on a board, but it's (a) 2 player only and (b) not something that stands up to too much repeated play, so it's doomed to hit this list fairly often. It is however fun, and rather different, when it does come out.

Beowulf: The Legend - 15 months

We did consider trading this one away, as we play it so rarely, but it didn't go, so nowadays we've just accepted that it's a game we'll play, and enjoy, every year or so, but leave on the shelf between times. It's actually quite fun occasionally, but I can't imagine wanting to play it too often.

Concept - 15 months

It's not quite a party game, but it's enough of one that it suffers from the fact we don't really play party games very often nowadays. It has come out without me in the game at least once, if not more, over the intervening year.

Day & Night - 14 months

This is a 2 player only game that we play every year or so, or just miss like this time - we've been playing too much Terraforming Mars! We played it twice when it did come out, on two different dates, as we were reminded of it.

Thurn and Taxis - 14 months

This has never really excited me that much - I'd generally prefer to play Ticket to Ride - but we hang on to it as another lightish route building game, and it comes out from time to time.

Maybe I forgot to log a play? Surprised it's been this long. But, although I really like the game, I find playing it frustrating. I seem to bump it and everything falls down.

Had a game night with only one other player showed up, so pulled out some two player games that I normally don't play.

Bought it 7ish years ago and gave it to someone to learn and come back and teach it. It was a really bad experience. I eventually sold it.

The person I sold it to, actually brought it over for a game night. This time the play went much better and I'm actually talking about getting it to the table again.

Looks like I've managed to play 5 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Clans -- (1 this month; dozens of plays 8+ years ago) _7_
(images by CinMel & korppu)

Quite delightful to have this back in play. I'd brought it to work for Lunch Gaming and nearly failed to pull it out, because I'd forgotten it worked with 2 players: I'd (momentarily) thought it was only for 3 or 4.

Fortunately, it was pulled out, and also fortunately (surprise!) it works very well with 2. Needs more work.

Last Train to Wensleydale -- (1 this month; 4 plays 7+ years ago) _7⅓_
(images by Hammy & OpettajaH)

This game was quite odd (by the dimly-remembered standards of my earlier plays.) It was still fun, though; and reminded me that there are more than a few Wallaces from this era that need to get back to the table. (Perhaps I'll list Byzantium next month?)

Love Letter -- (2 this month; 27 plays 34 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by AEGTodd & MyParadox)

Strange it's been so long for this one. It hadn't felt like that big a gap.
I acknowledge that I haven't been agitating for its play; and with my elder two children now away from home at college it's not quite got the same critical mass that once it had.
But I'd still hope it won't be another three years until the next play.

The Bottle Imp -- (1 this month; 6 plays 30 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by Verkisto & Gola)

I'd never tried this one before with four players: thinking (it seems, entirely incorrectly) that it was Only For Three. But it works very nicely with 4, and since the bottle doesn't hit quite as often, it's possibly an easier sell for the new folk that way, too.

デザインタウン Dezain taun 'Design Town' -- (3 this month; 4 plays 25 months ago) _7_
(images by darkavatar1470 & Steerpike.Instance)

Son #2 and I enjoyed the plays of this one. I don't think I've tried it yet with more than just the two of us; it might be worth attempting with more.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

A dusty entry indeed. My copy is still safely in the drawer of my shelving unit, but a revival of several games via Yucata.de has seen this get some play. It's easy to forget that there are many people out there in Internet land that like the same games I do and I don't have to stick to just my gaming circle.

An old school party word game which, I think, found a fine formula back then and has stuck with it 'til today. My wife and I found a copy in the hotel we stayed in for our 10th Wedding Anniversary and, albeit just two player, she enjoyed it very much and I liked it as much as ever. There is often a way 'around' the taboo words - for instance, for Mirage (taboo words Oasis, Sand, Desert, Water, Illusion or similar) I've used "French fighter jet", which works when your partner/team is on the same wavelength - but the principle still holds up.

I got the Captain Carcass re-skin of this after playing DMD on the iPad: I think I prefer the card version, as it doesn't come with all that silly campaign/achievement malarkey on digital. My two casual-gamer work colleagues both loved it, and one ordered a copy for his nephews straight away. Good little push-your-luck, very swingy.

Wow, what a thick layer of dust! We undusted this for the opening of the NFL season and had so much fun that I'm baffled we haven't played this in such a long time. We played Dwarves against Orcs (classic match-up, huh?) and the Orcs just cheated too much in the end .

It was new because I bought the new (iello) version as my old edition's got a few cards missing for mysterious reasons and I thought my kid would enjoy this version better anyway. What can I say? It's still a classic.

Not a lot of dust this month, but it has been so long since I have had a game for the list, I decided to post.

The Castles of Burgundy
Dust Level 17 months
Plays: 2

Any game Sheryl will play with me is worth keeping proficient on. I had it on the table before setting it up, and she asked, "Have I played that?" It was overdue. We both missed some scoring and I won by 9 VPs, but she enjoyed building her cattle empire. I played one more solo three-handed so that I could take it to gaming group soon.

Rating: d10-8 out of 10.

Roll for the Galaxy
Dust Level 16 months
Plays: 1

Played this at gaming group because I knew that Robert Collins wanted to play. Even though I own the game, I came in DFL, as I frequently do. I'm not sure what I'm missing, and a certain amount is certainly the luck of the draw bag, but I'll play it occasionally for the guys who like it.

Rating: 7.3 out of 10.

Crude: The Oil Game
Dust Level 14 months
Plays: 3

All of these were solo, and I remembered why I don't take Crude to gaming group. As much as I sometimes enjoy a game based on random chance, invariably one player gets "skunked" on hitting a producing well until late in the game. One member of the group who got in that position will never play it again. Still, I played it 3 times.

Rating: 6.8 out of 10.

After the shelf holding our boardgames collapsed (whoops), we bought a new shelf that's a bit smaller. To accommodate this we have a pile of 15 games or so "to evaluate" -- that is, play them once more, and decide whether we really want to keep them.

Stone Age was in this pile, and while I don't love it, my wife said we need to keep it (and its smelly cup)... Now to find somewhere to squeeze it on our shelves. Hmmm...
