You are once again invited to take part in the monthly Golden Turtleback miniature painting contest.

The contest has kept its original name in honour of its founder David Anderson (turtleback). It's usually run by Cerith Morgan-Jones (Bastion of insanity). I'm merely keeping the contest going until Cerith returns.

Please give this geeklist a thumb to help get it to the front page, and click on the images you thumb and give the actual images thumbs up as well !

The more contestants the better! New painters are more than welcome!

RULES

1) Add the game of the miniature(s) you painted as an item to the list. Insert the image(s) in the body of the entry. Use the format [imageid=xxxxxmedium] where xxxxx is the id of the picture.

2) The image you submit must have been uploaded during September 2017. Gallery images are okay but submitted images are preferred.

3) One entry per person. You may submit images of a single miniature or a group at your discretion.
You may, however, use either:
up to two 'normal' pictures of your entry, usually, the front and back of the miniature(s)
OR
one image of a montage/collage of your entry.

4) You are the artist. Please do not submit miniatures painted by someone else.

5) Make of the mini, scale and paints you used are appreciated.

6) The contest will end on 31 October 2017. The winner will be the picture with the most thumbs. Winners will appear in the next months’ list.

7) Users can thumb as many entries as they like.

In the interests of maintaining a level playing field for all entrants, if an entry does not conform to the above rules, it will be removed. New contestants will be notified beforehand so that they can edit their entry or submit another one that meets all the criteria.

PRIZES

I'm reliant on tips to offer prizes. Any tips received will awarded as follows:

1st place: 35%, plus an exclusive microbadge! Microbadge: Golden Turtleback Painted Miniature Monthly Contest winner
2nd place: 25%
3rd place: 15%
Encouragement Awards: 25% (will be given to non-placing worthy entries with a bias to new participants.)

One random thumber will receive 5 !

Two identical miniatures for the This Is Not a Test: Post-Apocalyptic Skirmish Rules expansion, This Is Not a Test: Skull-Deep in the Dead. This is an unusual expansion in that it turns a (very) adversarial game into a competitive co-op. Anyway, I backed the Ghosts of Gaia KickStarter from Bad Squiddo games and bought two of this miniature - one for me and one to give to a friend as a birthday present:

Board Game: This Is Not a Test: Skull-Deep in the Dead

Board Game: This Is Not a Test: Skull-Deep in the Dead

The miniatures are painted with Vallejo and P3 paints, AP washes and old old GW inks.

The Necromancer finally is the last enemy I had to paint for my friend's birthday present. Unfortunately I have to finish the heroes for his wife, but that's at least one part wrapped up.

So, now this guy might need some explanation (I put the fluff in spoilers so you can cut straight to the end if you're impatient ):

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I saved him for last, because I had some ideas buzzing around regarding his colour scheme, but somehow nothing struck me as the "right" one for him. So I thought about his background a bit. He's a Necromancer, so he probably was some sort of outsider in the mage community, but with a big ego to feed - otherwise he'd taken up, I don't know, herbs or such harmless stuff. So he would want to compensate for the disdain he receives from his respectable colleagues by a flourishing outfit and gruesome stuff tp strike fear into the hearts of his enemies. And he's probably the morbid kind, anyway.
So, I got down to it:

The robe was to be a shimmering cloth, like brocade or silk, but that little bit overdone. So I painted it with Chrome and then used transparent blue and red, that I mixed into violet for the shades in between, so it gets the effect that the highlights shimmer in a different colour than the shades and in between it's, well, in-between.
The bones were straightforward, the "cloth" on his staff I originally intended to do like his robes, but then decided to make it (human? hrhr) skin instead to add to the gruesomeness. (Is that a word?)
The armour is then done pretty much like the ones I did before (to get some kind of consistency in the models), working with Burnt Iron and towards Silver for the highlights.
I then fiddled around with the lighting and ended up using natural light from the window and the mini on our dining table, so that the effect of the shimmering cloak would be visible on the picture.
All paints are either Vallejo or Citadel, as usual.

Desperate Mercenary from Malifaux by Wyrd Miniatures. 32mm heroic. Paints 'n stuff in the spoiler, less specific than usual:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Metal arm & gun were both basecoated in AP Gun Metal. In order to differentiate them I washed the gun in black and arm in black/brown. Arm received a few additional wash layers in between some highlighting. Once the gun was "done" I glazed in blue, purple and sepia to get that heated effect of it just being fired with. Added a touch of highlights after that to keep the metallic shine in. I don't always paint that effect in but it's a really fun & simple way to get a bit of colour on your metallic pew pews

Coat was basecoated in VGC Heavy Green, received some rather garish ochre highlights and was toned down with some green & brown washes.

Lighter bits were pretty much AP Skeleton Bone and brown or sepia washes. I used ochre to highlight the boots, I really like that touch of yellow it gives there.

It's been a while since I painted this and it was very "in the zone" experience so I took less mental notes than usual. Was loads of fun to paint.

I suppose for a bit I just painted some Golems to detail, so here is the 3rd installment, the incredible jade golem (people tend to make hulk jokes, I'll beat them to it I guess). Working on some different figures now, so maybe next month ill have something treeish, or elfish. Currently the elf work is rank and file, simple tabletop level stuff. Was worth the effort I feel.

The golems have a bit of a space issue, even stock, with bumping fists, double that when I started repositioning them. This lead to further forays into basing, as I raised him on a block of blue insulation foam masquerading as a rock.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
by far some of my most involved highlights, the jade itself being 7 layers. From dark to light turqoise ink+gnarls green, gnarls green, iosan green, iosan green+wurm green, sulfuric yellow, wurm green, morrow white (all p3). Blades have some blue blended into the metallics, and bluegrey and blacks used for shading. Gold was a departure to oranger rhulic gold (p3) which worked on this model well (but not the next one) shaded with browns and turqoise ink, highlighted with a silver. Purple was magenta (vmc) down to hexed lichen+black (vgc).

I knew someone who loved dragons but didn't have any in her house. So I set about fixing that. About 10 hours work on the model. The colours were based on her suggestion of what she liked (without knowing a dragon was coming) though she did suggest red tips on the wings that I didn't feel would work. The dragon is a little cold for what I wanted but I'm still pretty happy with the outcome. I went for a simple black display base to work into the stone it stands on and to help the dragon stand out.

Vallejo paints brushed on (some miniatures like this remind me I should get an airbrush). Repainted a fair few scales directly when I didn't like the glaze over them.

Painted this expansion of undead monsters, 8 skeletons, 4 mummies, and 4 zombies. I like a little variety so I did them in sets of twos then changed up colors palates between sets. Moving on to Kellar's Keep expansion now. This game is a classic that I still love playing.

Formless Spawn from Cthulhu Wars. These guys are also the Orange Faction, but the lore describes them as black oily things, so I tried the original paint-up’s scheme and had a fiery interior. But if I’m being honest I just wanted a reason to try painting a bunch of speculation highlights and try more OSL.

GW and Vallejo Game/Model colors used.

This is one of the Stormcast Liberators from the Shadespire game coming from Games Workshop. I've been having fun using Nuln Oil Gloss instead of normal Nuln Oil. I like the higher level of contrast for certain things.

Note that the base is actually a part of the miniature itself, a cool feature of the pieces in this game!

Materials used:
Primer: Used an undercoat white with Retributor Gold spray.
Base coats and highlights: Vallejo Game colors.
Washes: Reikland Fleshade and Nuln Oil Gloss.
Finishes: Dulcote

I've been focusing on trying to achieve metallic looks without using metallics. The gold was done with Brown's, yellows and Whites. And the steel with grey's, blues, and whites. I also started zenathal Highlighting with many glaze coats. A style I am really falling in love with.

Started painting my Zombicide Black Plague miniatures a while back, but haven't posted any pictures before. I used to collect Warhammer back in the day but was an awful painter. Just terrible. No patience. So I'm surprised that I quite like the results I'm getting.

I only submitting this because the bgg gallery for this guest box was a bit slight. Might as well pop it here. Marcus the Mighty, my new favourite ZBP wizard.

I'd like to submit a group of Orc Shamans from Sword & Sorcery. They turned out to be one of the more interesting minis from that game.

While having enjoyed the Golden Turtleback for years, I have never submitted an entry before. I am not a new painter, having maintained my mediocre status for several decades. I don't feel as if my work really belongs next to some of these truly amazingly talented painters here, but I thought it would be fun to stick my head in and say "Hi" to this wonderful community! And: Thanks!

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Paints were mostly Reaper MSP HD. The only thing really out of the ordinary were the variety of washes I used. These included some nuln oil, secret weapon (blue black and red black), as well as some custom washes made with magic wash and cheap acrylics (for the dark green). Also my first feeble attempt at a bit of OSL on the magic flames in their hands.

This is my first submission here - I just started painting about a year ago and this was my third project. I enjoyed the fact it felt like real people.

Mostly Army Painter paints with some citadel washes.
