Welcome to
Solitaire Games On Your Table
November 2017

Home of "Together, We Game Alone"

Hello, and welcome to another month of exciting times with solo games! Feel free to participate in any way you like: Post about the solo games that you play, share your latest solo design or variant, comment on entries that strike your fancy, and join in. This is a very friendly group, and we happily welcome aboard every type of solo gamer!

Guidelines

1 Play a solo game, a solo variant, or a multiplayer game solo.
2 Add an entry to this GeekList and tell us about it. Get the most out of the SGOYT Aggregator by using at least one of the following tags:

1 Add the <summary></summary> tag to include a short overview. All summaries are recorded, as on my overview page.
2 Add the <rating></rating> tag to rate a game on a scale of 0.5 to 5.0. Only the most recent rating for a game is recorded, as on my ratings page.

3 Be nice, but most of all have fun!
4 See something you like? Give it a thumb.

It's extremely helpful (but not mandatory) to include some thumbsup and thumbsdown describing the pros and cons of the game you played. They're great visual aids to summarize your post, and might help to keep the wallet damage down a bit!

Need a little help with formatting? Check out the Forum Formatting Guide and Tricks of the Geek.

About Me

Who in the world is hosting this month's list?! Some may recognize me, but I'm relatively new to solo games, the guild, and the SGOYT lists in general. If we haven't crossed paths before, it's nice to meet you! This is my first time hosting, and I hope I have plenty of interesting things to make this month an enjoyable one.

If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to send me a GeekMail! I'm sure I'll be busy with keeping up with the list and the various activities, yet I spend a good deal of time around here. It's an amazing place, filled with all of you absolutely wonderful people! Enough about me, though... Get those solo games out!

The Theme for November is
My Favorite Game Component

Inspired by Kevin

The SGOYT lists are all about individuals playing alone and sharing their very unique tastes. This month's theme is somewhat of a parallel to that idea, with a focus on your favorite game component from each game you post about. It doesn't even have to be a standard component! Some ideas and examples:

A specific card with artwork you love.
A die with a special past, either from good or bad luck.
A painted miniature you spent hours creating.
A mangled game piece from that time your pet (or toddler) tried to play with you.
A game box signed by the designer, artist, or publisher.
A board or map with an awesome design.
A meeple that you customized or simply adore in its original state.
A tile that reminds you of your favorite place.

This theme is meant to be a bit loose, so be as creative as you like! The only things that might not fit in easily are game accessories, like dice trays and card holders, although I'm certainly not opposed to seeing some of those. Have fun, and you might just find out that there are others who have the same favorites!

IMPORTANT: Please be sure to include your favorite component and why it's your favorite near the top or bottom of your entry with a clear label. I will be awarding GeekGold to any entry with this addition, and images are not required! Just be sure to make it obvious so I can spot it easier. Thank you!

There will also be contests and giveaways throughout the month, which can be found via the following links. Check back often, and good luck!

Activity #1 / Activity #2 / Activity #3 / Activity #4 / Activity #5

The Stealthy Elephant

Back in September 2017, Amy posted a SGOYT entry for Gloom of Kilforth, and Nelly the Stealthy Elephant was coined by Tristan in the comments. In a strange coincidence, I posted a few hours later about a Stealthy Elephant in my entry for Tales of the Arabian Nights. Very... Stealthy! And funny.

In honor of that hilarious coincidence, keep an eye out for any stealthy elephants who might appear in my individual entries throughout the month. Be the first to comment on the entry with the phrase, "Stealthy Elephant!" and you'll have 10 GeekGold stealthily added to your account!

Remember that a stealthy elephant will always look like an elephant, although his or her attire (and size) may vary. A stealthy elephant will also be rather difficult to spot, being all stealthy and all. No one knows how many times this may happen! And how many stealthy elephants are there, after all?

Activity #1 - Calico Critters Component Conundrum Contest

Dates: November 1-10, 2017 / Status: CLOSED

Special thanks to Kevin for originally coming up with this contest idea in August, and allowing me to use it as the inspiration not only for November's theme, but also for this activity.

And a round of applause and gratitude to Chip Theory Games for generously providing the prize!

Leaving games out on the table is a privilege some of us have to keep games set up longer, and/or make longer games more manageable in shorter play sessions. As for me... Apparently this privilege turned into a problem when my Calico Critters made off with my game components!

Can you identify the games pictured below? At least 1 actual game component is included, and the scene itself should be reminiscent of either the game name or a typical game experience. Each image depicts a single game.

But wait! There is at least 1 irrelevant image that has absolutely nothing to do with a game, and is there purely for misdirection and/or an added dose of cuteness.

All of the answers can be found in my Collection as Owned Games, although some may not be solo games nor have any recorded plays. That's part of the challenge!

TIP: Click on each image and/or navigate back and forth through my Gallery to view the larger sizes with more details.

Guidelines

Locate the correct names of the pictured games in my collection.
Send me a single GeekMail before 12 PM EST (UTC/GMT-5) on November 10 with matching answers numbered 1-10.
Once submitted, answers may not be changed, so take your time and look carefully!
For any irrelevant image, simply leave that line blank or mark it with "N/A".
Include the phrase "Not in" if you would like to participate without being entered in the prize drawing.
Each correct response will give you 1 entry into the prize drawing, for a maximum of 10 entries per person.
You do not need to answer everything correctly to have a chance to win: Just 1 correct response could be worth it!
Once entries are closed, 1 winner will be randomly determined.

Prize

(1) $10 USD Coupon to the Chip Theory Games Online Store

IMPORTANT: The coupon is not valid for purchases elsewhere (like Kickstarter add-ons) and may not be applied to shipping. Please check the shipping cost to your address, particularly if you are outside of the United States.

The winning number from RANDOM.ORG was 11.

Congratulations, Stephanie! Winner of a $10 USD coupon to the Chip Theory Games Online Store.

I will be in touch shortly with your prize. Enjoy!

And I must say that I wish I had something to hand out to everyone who participated: You all had such nice things to say with your entries!

Correct Responses

1. Thurn and Taxis - The board and a bonus tile are featured, while the scene is supposed to show the mail being delivered. Maybe that giant package is Gloomhaven? The size seems about right...
2. City of Iron: Second Edition - The box is in the background, and there is a partially hidden province tile on the table. Everyone is building a city, but I loved the suggestion of using an ironing board: I do have a tiny one I forgot all about!
3. Elevenses for One - The cards used as wallpaper are from the game, and this fantastic tea trolley is packed with everything needed for a tea party.
4. N/A - This one had the funniest responses, but it was tossed in just for misdirection! Getting these fellows to pose was the most difficult... We had some unfortunate bicycle dominoes going on during the photo shoot.
5. Above and Below - The box, cubes, and apple tile are featured. More importantly, this is all about being "above" and "below" with the little bear in a basket, the shelves, and the rather obscure slide!
6. Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle - The box is in the background, and the tokens on the ground are from the game. More importantly, wands at the ready! One of my favorites from this contest, although it was also the first to be taken.
7. Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game - Possibly a little too easy, but the cards in the background are from the game. Plus mother is reading a bedtime story to a not-so-sleepy baby!
8. Cottage Garden - The flower tiles and wheelbarrow are from the game, although this might have been a little on the easy side since I staged a similar photo before!
9. N/A - Ah-ha! Another bit of misdirection on my part, although this one was easier to catch than the other. Just a little fun playing Supermarket Sweep with Calico Critters!
10. Islebound - The ships, fish, and wood are all from the game. It was a little difficult to figure out what to do with the figures, but this turned out much cuter than I originally planned!

Activity #2 - The GameMaster's Apprentice Giveaway

Dates: November 5-19, 2017 / Status: CLOSED

A huge thank you to Nathan Rockwood of Larcenous Designs, LLC for generously offering up these prizes, as well as granting permission for the sample cards to be uploaded!

Our favorite games often create stories or experiences that stick with us. Adding a storyline to a solo game can sometimes be easy, yet it often benefits from the use of some tools. The GameMaster's Apprentice is one such tool that provides all sorts of ideas and prompts.

How will you enhance your game? Use any of the following sample cards to enjoy your game even more. Choose a single element, use an entire card, or pick and choose aspects from multiple cards. It's all up to you!

For reference, this overview provides a brief explanation of the details presented on most cards:

Without further ado, I present the 7 sample cards! Each of the currently available decks is represented to provide a variety of ideas. So long as you're having fun, use them in whatever ways you like and share in your SGOYT entries!

RECOMMENDATION: Only look at the larger sizes when you're ready to use the cards to keep some things a mystery until you play, if desired!
TIP: Click on each image and/or navigate back and forth through my Gallery to view the larger sizes with more details.

Age of Sail / Base / Demon Hunters / Fantasy / Horror / Sci-Fi / Steampunk

Guidelines

Use at least 1 of the sample cards (or even the overview card) in a game in whatever ways fit your play style.
You may use the same card, and even the same detail, in multiple SGOYT entries.
In your SGOYT entry about the game, clearly mention how you incorporated the card(s).
Send me a GeekMail before 12 PM EST (UTC/GMT-5) on November 19 with a link to each of your SGOYT posts where the card(s) were used.
Feel free to send me a GeekMail for each individual post, or a summary with all links prior to the deadline.
You may participate without being entered in the prize drawing by using the card(s) in your SGOYT entries, but not sending me a GeekMail.
Each SGOYT entry I receive a GeekMail about will give you 1 entry into the prize drawing.
There is no limit to the number of prize drawing entries you may earn, but please do not spam the list purely for the sake of increasing your chances.
Even if others participate a lot, you can still have a chance to win: Just 1 entry could be worth it!
Once entries are closed, 3 winners will be randomly determined.

Prizes

(1) Complete Set of 7 Decks from The GameMaster's Apprentice at Cost + Shipping
(1) Deck of Choice from The GameMaster's Apprentice at Cost + Shipping
(1) Deck of Choice from The GameMaster's Apprentice at Cost + Shipping

IMPORTANT: The decks must be purchased through DriveThruRPG and will have a discounted price of approximately $5.11 USD per deck plus shipping. Each prize includes both the physical and PDF versions of the cards. Please check the shipping cost to your address, particularly if you are outside of the United States.

Activity #4 - SGOYT with Calico Critters Giveaway

Dates: November 15-29, 2017 / Status: OPEN

It wouldn't be me without more Calico Critters! These adorable little figures often show up with my game components, and I have such a great time sharing them. Although some are identical, most are unique... Just like all of us!

To fit in with the theme of the month, it's up to you to choose your favorite to be featured in a SGOYT group photo! Choose a figure you've seen, describe your favorite, or leave it all up to chance. There's even a giveaway for participating!

Guidelines

Decide on your favorite figure, either pictured in Board Games with Calico Critters or based on other criteria.
Figures will not be used multiple times, and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.
I have an alarming number of figures, many of whom haven't been featured yet, so you might be surprised by what I have available.
Be as vague or specific as you like with details like species, breed, color, clothing color or style, size or age, and gender.
Send me a GeekMail before 12 PM EST (UTC/GMT-5) on November 29 with at least 2 separate figure descriptions, and 1 will be assigned to you.
You may receive a response to confirm some details, but the actual figure will not be revealed until the photo is unveiled.
Include the phrase "Not in" if you would like to participate without being entered in the prize drawing.
Each person who participates will receive 1 entry into the prize drawing.
Once entries are closed, 3 winners will be randomly determined.
The group photo will be revealed in December, and may be split into multiple shots depending on the number of participants.

Prizes

Bonus Activity #4.5 - The Stealthy Elephant Cometh Contest

Dates: November 14-29, 2017 / Status: OPEN

You've all been tasked with finding some Stealthy Elephants in my entries this month, and rumor has it that one might still be floating around unidentified as of today (November 14)... But no matter!

The time put into looking through my images must add up, and I know these hidden object games aren't for everyone. What if you could turn the tables and throw the work back on me?

That's right: It's YOUR turn to hide some Stealthy Elephants for ME to find! No elephants in your collection? Print out a picture, or find anything that could easily pass as an elephant.

Guidelines

Include a Stealthy Elephant in a photo as part of your entry, making sure to keep it partially hidden or otherwise stealthy.
Each individual is limited to hiding a maximum of 2 Stealthy Elephants for me to find.
Only new entries posted between 12 PM EST (UTC/GMT-5) on November 14 and 12 PM EST (UTC/GMT-5) on November 29 will count towards this activity.
Others should attempt not to post the phrase Stealthy Elephant! but please be aware that this may happen.
It is then up to me to try to find any Stealthy Elephants in your entries!
For the purposes of this contest, 5 days is defined as exactly 120 hours from the time of the original entry.
If I incorrectly guess that there is a Stealthy Elephant in your entry, you must reply to my comment and you will receive 1 GeekGold.
If I correctly identify your Stealthy Elephant within 5 days, you will receive 5 GeekGold.
If I am unable to identify your Stealthy Elephant within 5 days, send me a GeekMail with a link to the entry and the location of the Stealthy Elephant, and you will receive 10 GeekGold.
Have fun, and here's to hoping no one makes these too impossible for me to find! (But maybe I deserve that with what I've been up to with my Stealthy Elephants... Ha!)

This is all for fun. So long as you participate, you should get some GeekGold! And you might even get some if you don't. "I see Stealthy Elephants... All the time!"

Activity #5 - November Leftovers Giveaway

Dates: November 21-30, 2017 / Status: OPEN

The United States celebrates Thanksgiving later this week, but we're here to celebrate November with the SGOYT list! I had thought of incorporating some sort of thankfulness... Yet that happens so often that it basically would have boiled down to asking everyone to do exactly the same thing.

However, Thanksgiving often comes with all sorts of leftovers. I have plenty of leftover prizes that need to be devoured before they go to waste. Scoop them up before it's too late and enjoy!

Guidelines

Choose 1 of the leftover prizes that you would like to win.
If you choose the GOG Game Code, please indicate which game(s) you are interested in.
Send me a GeekMail before 12 PM EST (UTC/GMT-5) on November 30 with your chosen leftover prize.
Each person who participates will receive 1 entry into the prize drawing for that specific leftover prize.
Once entries are closed, at least 4 winners will be randomly determined.
Each individual may only win 1 prize.
I reserve the right to determine exactly how many winners there will be, but the more, the merrier!

Prizes

There's been some activity on the Ambush forums with new players playing the game, and some of us old timers arguing about the rules. I'll be finishing up my play of Far Cry Primal soon (See VGG) and I plan on taking a break and pulling out some board games.

I WILL PLAY THIS GAME THIS MONTH.

Edit: So, as Ambush is already pretty narrative in an of itself, it;s kind of hard to incorporate the GameMaster cards outside of the obvious "Use the numbers at the tops for the die rolls" (which I attempted to do.) Most of the die rolls are d10, so I tried to use them as best I could and mark them off on the printed out drafts of the 7 cards I made. When it was obviously not a d10 I either randomly added or subtracted them together. And I ran out of number eventually but at least I got to use what I did.

I also used the cards to name the 8 members of my squad, which resulted in some non-thematic WWII names, so I tried to make them somewhat realistic (as developing some connection to your squad is one of the great things about Ambush.) For example: "Wilbur Pestilous" didn't really sound like the awesome squad commander I made, but Wilbur "The Pest" Alexei sudden sounds like one, of Russian decent. I also tried to give them some Virtue or Vice characteristics, to flesh them out a bit more. But it really didn't have much effect specifically on the game - except maybe whether or not they aimed to kill or capture the German soldiers they were up against.

Thanks for giving me an excuse to add some more flavor to the game.

Usually when I finish doing a video I put the game away for a good long while because I play them so many times before the video that once I'm done filming, I'm typically done for a while.

Not so with this game. I'm still at it, even though I posted my video last week. The characters play so differently that I want to take a crack at all of them (and some from Mistfall too).

I am finding that some of the Mistfall encounters/locations/character combos are "easier" to get through in one turn than those in Heart of the Mists but it is also possible that I've been playing the game a lot and getting better at the card management.

Vid is here, if you're interested in the 5 reasons I think this game is worthwhile playing despite the huge learning curve and complex rule book: https://youtu.be/NgGuPfdpjaA

Getting ready to set this up and do a solo run through using Stukajoes CDG method. I've always been fascinated with Russian history (it's my 2nd favorite history topic after WWII) and, from the rules, this game appears to capture the epic nature of this very, very bloody civil war. The amount of chrome reminds me of Carthage: The First Punic War which seems like a lot unless you have a good, solid background on the topic.

My expectations are high going in so now time to see if the game delivers

A well deserving winner of the 2017 Solitaire PnP Contest. Black Sonata is a perfect blend of innovation and creativity paired to create a unique experience. I'm a big fan of deduction and having it appear in a solo game is a source of real joy to me.

If you want to play clue, but you don't have anyone to play with, put Black Sonata in your rotation.

Last month I posted a Horror theme challenge and had a blast playing games in my collection that directly or even indirectly related to horror. The challenge motivated me to play some of my new games and older ones.

Most (Americans) associate November with Thanksgiving, but we also have Veterans Day in the middle of the month. So my theme this month is primarily focused on celebrating the harvest by playing some farming games ( a nod to Uwe). But, I will also add a few games to celebrate current and former soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, along with their families.

Harvest Games:
At The Gates of Loyang
La Granja
Agricola

There is nothing better than having coffee or tea after a big meal...
VivaJava: The Coffee Game: The Dice Game
Elevenses for One

Other games of feasts:
Godforsaken Scavengers

Military Games:
The Grizzled
Airborne Commander

I'll add more as I go through my collection.

is hosting the fourth TAL challenge in a campaign he's organised.

I've participated in all of them, and always had a blast (pun intended!).

The latest challenge saw a three day Surge scenario, with the objective of taking out a base in the mountains near Izeh, in Iran.

My previous roster of pilots had been with me since the first mission and had been promoted more than Christmas. There weren't enough SO points available in this mission for me to use the old gang, so they were sent home to a ticker tape parade and the lucrative after dinner speech circuit.

I used a random selection for my new gang in order to claim the bonus SOs and ended up with a lot of a helicopters and a token Harrier, which is kind of like a helicopter anyway. Still, the game is called Thunderbolt Apache Leader for a reason!

Long story short: I managed my first ever Great result in TAL! I took a few risks and was greatly aided by fortune smiling on the reckless, and I was able to destroy all the enemy battalions. I didn't lose a pilot but did spend a lot of SOs during the three days repairing damaged helicopters! This meant I wasn't able to do any pilot R&R, and a couple of my key pilots will have high stress going into the next mission, which might cause me problems down the road. But I think it was worth it!

TAL is just supremely fun, and I have such a good time whenever I play it. Jay's campaign is encouraging me to get this game to the table on a regular basis, for which I am extremely thankful.

I have had Rogue Agent in the hopper for a long time and after the long playtesting time for Automobiles I wanted to work through something a little more quickly. The SoloPlay variant is complete and is a very interesting (and short) game of tactics and luck. It has held up very well and presents a satisfying gaming experience.

I may be taking a break from full SoloPlay releases as I work on some gaming prototypes that I have ready to put together. We'll see where the inspiration takes me. I have 6-8 variants in their final stages which need the playtesting completed to finish them up.

As far as other solo games that I have been playing:

Agricola (SoloPlay variant of course): I play on hard, with Farmers of the Moor and the rocky tiles (glutton for punishment). Of the 7 games that I played through I won 3 with 2 of those right on the line of victory. I like to play with the #1 mini-expansion to further complicate matters and keep that brain burning throughout the experience.

C02 with the arctic cards is on the table right now and I can't quite keep the world from blowing up (choking off). I play this one "co-op" with 2 colors. I was on the brink of success with the last game but could not save 1 more action to complete a plant to turn the tide. I really like the play of CO2 and the arctic mechanics add the additional challenge that I seek to put into my designs.

What better way to play Deadball 1909... then replaying the 1909 World Series with Ty Cobb and the Detroit Tigers vs Honus Wagner and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

............. 1909 WORLD SERIES .............

Pittsburgh won the pennant in 1909 behind the brilliant play of Honus Wagner, who led the league with a .339 batting average and 100 RBI.

Detroit returned for their third consecutive Fall Classic determined to erase the memories of their previous efforts. The Tigers were also backed up by the heavy bat of Ty Cobb (who had just won his third consecutive American League batting title) and a formidable pitching staff.

Detroit started the game off with a walk, a uncharacteristic throwing error by SS Wagner, followed up by a Rbi Single by Cobb and then a 2 Rbi double by Crawford. It was 3 - 0 after the end of the 1st inning.

Later, Detroit would add another run in the top of the 3rd when Cobb singled, stole a base and was driven in by Crawford again.

Mullin pitched an outstanding game for Detroit, holding Pittsburgh to their only run in the bottom of the 7th when Abstein lead off with a single and was later driven in by the pitcher Adams. The final was 4 - 1 in favor of Detroit who now leads the series 1-0. Cobb was clearly the best player on the field today going 3-4 with 2 stolen bases, 2 runs scored and 1 Rbi. Crawford was another bright spot for Detroit as he went 3 for 4, with 2 runs batted in.

Wagner was not able to get it going as he went 1-4 with a single and 1 stolen base. It was a clear day at Forbes Field with 29,264 in attendance.

DETROIT LEADS THE SERIES 1 - 0

Got a quick game in during lunch.

Single Species variant where I finished with 43 points, which is far more than I deserved.

NOTHING seemed to be working. I knew I shouldn't have started with Promiscuous Sexuality, but I thought I'd give it a shot and see if having huge numbers would work out in the solo game (I've done the 'breed 'em out' strategy in multiplayer and it can work in certain circumstances).

After about the 4th or 5th chaos that tanked my population, I flipped over to Pair Bonding. That felt much better. Having Vocabulary was much nicer, and even spreading my few hunters to husbands was still better than fearing every event card.

Sadly hunting was terrible with a Tyrant Sea Bear fighting me for everything. There wasn't a single small game available. So I had to go North for big game, or stick to inventions. Not an easy way to get through your formative years.

Welp, 43 ain't a win, but I don't think I'll try promiscuous again anytime soon. In life OR in game, really.

(Somehow still on the first page!? )

-------------------------------------------------------------

Dug out this old classic for the first play in over a year.

It was already a bit late at night so I wasn't feeling ambitious enough to look up any of the current SGOYT challenges or track the full notations. Instead, I threw together a quick dirt map and ran all four cars together in sequence.

They all took similar entry paths but with no SISU cards for anyone it would be up to fate to decide which came out ahead in the end. No full (3x!) losses of control happened, but there were numerous botched double-downshifts (almost all going into 3rd gear), and the A11 corner caught all four cars. There must have been some unseen hazard lurking there.

Red and Blue ended with the best times, separated by only a 10-second differential that came from Red clipping a tree when its gearbox locked up in A11 (all of the others spun out or skidded onto the main road).

Route: A0-A10-A7 / P8-P9 / A6-A11-A10-A8 / D1-D6

Yellow: 2:20 - 34 = 1:46
White: 3:30 - 47 = 2:43
Blue: 2:00 - 33 = 1:27
Red: 2:10 - 33 = 1:37

Not really a solitaire game . . . okay, not a solitaire game at all; however, I am expecting my first grandbaby in 3 weeks, and thought this was a cute game to pick up and try out for forthcoming years.

Also, Jessica is hosting this month and she likes cute games, so I can't get any flak over it.

I played it 4-handed, randomly drawing 1 card at a time, in turn, for each player.

If you can count to 5, you can play this game. Strategy revolves around which of the five cards (numbered 1-5) to use. You move up or down, do not count the space already occupied, and cannot use a card more than once. At the end of five card plays, whichever monkey is in the highest position wins banana chips. Now shuffle & repeat with monkeys remaining in their current positions. Whichever player collects 3 (2-player game) or 5 (3-4 player game) banana chips first is the Monte Banana.

YELLOW WINS! YELLOW WINS! YELLOW WINS!

Lessons learned after the devastating defeat in the first time. Second time was the Through the Desert Scenario.

With not a lot of guns or deserts in the initial cards, my initial plan was to max out on the wagons. I had to skip one card to set myself up and later the AI skipped another for a gun, but I ended up with a nice little wagon T, plus good sized desert and mountain areas.

I tried denying him deserts and wagons, but I realized if I tried to deny him the guns as well I would give him a lot of cards without accomplishing much on my own. I was able to grow my wagon line a bit and add some plains and forests.

I counted mine first, and I was dang proud of my score. The areas were ok, with 2 1s, but the others had a good size. I did not score any pistols between deserts, but my wagon cross got me 13 points. My plan to deny him of wagons worked, with him only getting 6 points. But the big lakes and snowed areas plus 4 gun/desert combos got him enough to beat me. End score, 36x44.
