20 Most Anticipated Board Games of 2018 --- FINAL VOTING IS CLOSED (12529 votes)

20 Most Anticipated Board Games of 2018: Under Your Radar --- FINAL VOTING IS CLOSED (1589 votes)

Back for the ninth year...

Once again this year looks to be dominated by Kickstarter projects, which is not unexpected since details of most 2018 GenCon and Essen releases are closely held at this time of the year. Looking back through the years it is interesting to see the transition from the pre-Kickstarter to Kickstarter eras.

The competition through the years

Starting with the first nominations in 2009, this geeklist has all the past winners:

20 Most Anticipated Games of 20xx

Anyone want 500 Geek Gold???
100 Geek Gold to the person that nominates the Most Anticipated Game of 2018.
50 Geek Gold to the person that nominates the game with the most votes at the end of the nomination phase.
25 Geek Gold to each person that nominates a top 10 Most Anticipated Game of 2018.
25 Geek Gold to four randomly selected persons that seconded the game with the most nomination votes at the end of the nomination phase.

In the event that one of my nominations wins the Most Anticipated or most nominations, we'll move down the list to the Most Anticipated or most nominated game by someone that isn't me. Someone is getting the .

Alphabetical Listing Here

Status updates:
10 Minute Updates Here
Last year BGG XML API was broken, and I haven't had time yet to check the scripts and see if it's fixed. Until then we may or may not have the automated status updates.

As the nominations proceed, I would ask that everyone try and improve BGG as well by creating and/or updating game pages as appropriate. One particular aspect that I often see in need of correction are the release year and categories.

Without further ado nominations are once again open in this very in-formal and un-official contest to determine the 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2018.

Key Dates:
Nominations Open: Saturday, November 11, 2017
Nominations Close: Saturday, January 6, 2018
Voting Begins: Sunday, January 7, 2018
Voting Ends: Saturday, January 27, 2018

Bribing Voters
Bribes during the nomination and voting stage are allowed.

In the past, publishers and designers have offered web released scenarios, special cards, etc. as bribes to voters if they make it through the nominations phase or achieve a certain position in the final voting. This is completely acceptable as it drives anticipation, which is the point of this contest.

Don't forget that all bribes need to comply with BGG's policies on contests and promotions. General guidance is that whatever bribe is offered needs to be available to everyone. Therefore a contest for a copy of your game would not comply with BGG's policies because the copy would only be available to the winners, even if entry is available to everyone.

In the end, the intent of the bribes is just to have fun and allow publishers/designers to give a nod to all their anticipant fans. [As an aside... the real point of this is that I don't want to get into deciding what forms of promotion are acceptable or not.]

If you want to report an improper bribe, or if you have any questions regarding whether a bribe you're contemplating runs contrary to BGG rules I would suggest sending a geekmail to Octavian or Chad.

Nominating your most anticipated.
As always, if a game you're anticipating the release in 2018 is not on the list feel free to add it. Game designers and publishers are encouraged to nominate their own games by adding them to the list. Don't be humble and wait for someone else to do it. See the notes below for adding games.

As in past years, this will be a two-stage process... a nominations phase and a final voting phase.

Adding category nominations.
If you think a game should be in a category not already listed, you can add it in a comment using the category notation below, such as [category]wargame[/category]. If your comment has 5 or more thumbs the category will be added to the nomination.

Campaigning for your favorites
Go for it. If you're a publisher, designer, or designer's mom don't hesitate to campaign for your favorites. Bribing voters is fine too. Pretty much anything goes as long as kittens, puppies and small children aren't injured. We have to draw the line somewhere.

Nominations
To nominate a game add it to this geeklist with one or more categories using the category tags below. Please add a short note stating why it is anticipated that the game will ship in 2018. Feel free to suggest new categories.

Nomination name
Nominations may not have a BGG entry yet, or you may want to change the nomination name to indicate a specific edition.

To do so, put the nomination name inside of altname tags such as:
[altname]Favorite game - Unnamed expansion[/altname]

To second a nomination thumb its entry.

The top 50 nominations will be entered into the final vote for the top 20.

Nomination Categories:
Categories will be changed based on the nominations, but tentatively these are the categories I expect us to have, roughly based on 2017 entries. Feel free to nominate a game for multiple categories. Some of the categories may be combined or eliminated if there aren't enough nominations in the category.

Eligibility
Any newly available game or expansion is eligible if it is reasonably expected to ship in 2018. I know, "reasonably" is a fuzzy word... c'est la vie.

Voting
At the conclusion of nominations I will create a poll with the top 50 nominations.

Reprints vs. new editions
Reprints of already released games are not eligible, but new editions are. As with many things in the gaming industry this isn't a crisp line as to how many changes are necessary to distinguish a reprint from a new edition, but several factors to consider are artwork and components.

When nominating a new edition, mention why you think this one is different from the previous edition (not necessarily in detail, something as short as "new components" is sufficient).

Long out-of-print reprints
I would prefer to include games that have been generally unavailable for several years and are receiving a reprint. Again, this is a bit of a fuzzy area, but as an example, if Warhammer Quest or Hero Quest were to be reprinted without changes they would be eligible.

Multiple releases
It is not uncommon for a game printing to have multiple release editions for the EU and US markets (such as Mayfair Games/Lookout Games and Pegasus Spiele/Stronghold Games). Many games are released and available at Essen and then (sometimes much later) released in the US with great anticipation.

For many, I think the "buzz" surrounding an Essen release combined with the general unavailability heightens the anticipation.

I would prefer to include these releases and let the voting determine how anticipant people are.

Limited initial release
I would also prefer to include games that had a limited initial release and are preparing for a full re-release. Again, this will be a grey area, but one example I would point to is the approach that GMT and other publishers take with typically small pre-order releases that sell out quickly and receive a reprint if they perceive that the game was well received.

What is a small or limited release? Again, another gray area that we'll have to deal with as it comes up, as I'm sure a small release for Hasbro is quite different for a small release from most publishers here on BoardGameGeek. However, if it was a general Kickstarter project it will not count as a limited release even if it gained a significant following with a massively successful second Kickstarter (such as 7th Continent, Gloomhaven, et. al.).

This would also include games that might have had reviewer copies released, but are not yet generally available for purchase.

Crowdfunding/Kickstarter Releases
If a game was a crowdfunded (Kickstarter) project, and backers begin receiving copies before the 1st, the game will be considered generally released. However, sometimes projects offer an early Essen pickup or offer early airfreight copies. Those would fall under the limited release category. Similarly, this would apply to preorders, such as GMT's P500 program.

Other
If the particular game is part of a series (such as the Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game) I may combine multiple nominations into one entry for final voting if it appears as if the series is anticipated rather than a specific release in the series (this was done for the Dominion expansions in 2010).

Also, if there isn't any justification for why a particular game is anticipated to ship in 2018 I may remove it from final voting. The only reason I state this is to separate anticipated 2018 releases from wishlist items. Yes, it would be nice if Hasbro/Avalon Hill reprinted Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit but at this point I don't believe there is any reason to anticipate a 2018 release.

However, in this respect I would prefer to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

Anything else??? We'll wing it... After all, this is just for fun.

STORY DRIVEN SOLO GAME

Blight Chronicles: Agent Decker is a solo deck building game in which you are an Agent of Blight, one of the most secret government projects, specializing in infiltrating agents to complete precise tasks.

A briefing introduces the players to the setting and goals of the Mission. Each Mission is divided in several stages, each with a unique goal. At key points the player gets to choose where to go next. The most important thing for a Blight Agent is to be invisible so be sure to keep the Suspicion to a minimum. Full exposure means instant failure.

The Agent starts the game with the same deck, but as you face different obstacles your move set will change, and so will your gear. When dealing with an obstacle you’re faced with a choice: Do you knock it out without making too much noise, or eliminate it and take its gear?

Choose your stages well! Each has a different set of obstacles and goal, affected by choices you made in previous stages. They also allow you to collect different gear.

It’s your chance to show Blight and the World that you’re worthy, ready to face everything on your path. The Mission awaits!

In Cartel, you are a head of one of the biggest drug cartels that want to enrich themselves in the quickest and easiest possible way, that why you will plot against other cartels and try to steal their money or simply destroy it while trying to laundry your own cash. Sometimes you will invest your money in some buildings that will generate you some goods or produce you clean money. Player who will get the most clean cash at the end of the game will be named the greatest drug lord in the world.

Cartel is a small game for 2-4 players with multi use cards in which you will be fighting other players while building your own drug empire. During the game players will be facing different phases in which they will be bribing some contacts to enter restricted areas, using multi use action cards in few possible ways like: using it for its action, taking them as the goods or connecting them to own empire as buildings that will help us during the game.

There are few interesting mechanics in the game like area control; card management; small engine-building that works very well and with the smart design of multi use cards each and every game is an unique experience.

So do you have what it takes to take the whole drug cartel and show everyone who is the fierce force to be reckoned with?

Investigate Unspeakable Horrors, Without Losing Your Marbles!
Literally.

A three-dimensional clock tower, standing a foot tall and filled with marbles of four distinct colors, stands before you. Thirty unworldly tentacles push through the tower walls in every direction, in this high-tension, push-your-luck dice game of Lovecraft inspired horror. Fail your investigation dice rolls and you will be forced to draw a tentacle from the tower. Any marbles that fall as a result affect your character immediately, adding to your Discovery total, gaining spells and knowledge man was not meant to have, gaining madness - or dropping one of three DOOM marbles that will summon Cthulhu and end the game.
Investigate every horrific Location in the deck, each with its own unique dice challenge, in order to save the world before your luck runs out. The player with the most Discovery points is declared the Hero and wins the game. Otherwise, the Insane players collectively enjoy a brief moment of victory as Cthulhu rises, destroys the world and eats them last… as their reward.

THEMATIC
HORROR

If you've played it over the past three years - or seen it out on the table, you know how anticipated this game truly is!

The idea of a mad scientist building a monster is nothing new, but the rotating 1 vs. many mechanic via "Angry Villager Dice" brings something new to the genre.

This is set to hit Kickstarter in early spring with an end of year delivery estimate.

GF9 just announced there will be 5 expansions in 2018

Four Expansions each will contain two Doctors, plus additional Timey Wimey Cards, Planets, and Dilemmas.

A Christmas Special expansion - No real explanation given on this one.

Plus I think they said miniatures for some of the companions

I finally received the base game and love it. Can't wait to see what 2018 brings

This was Kickstarted in 2017 but will be delivered and available in retail by the end of Q2 this year. It takes the fundamental mechanics from Exceed Season 1, and adds a layer of complexity with transformations, attacks that become permanent special abilities. The roster is from the upcoming Seventh Cross game. The artwork is amazing, and every character has a very unique feel while being incredibly well balanced.

I take the liberty to nominate our own first game: Mobster Metropolis. A 2-4 player strategy game where participants compete to create the most powerful gangster syndicate.

Mobster Metropolis will hit Kickstarter in early March

Key aspects of the Mobster Metropolis gameplay:
* Allows a wide variety of playstyles, tactics and strategies.
* Asymmetrical setup with several elements that change for each game.
* Unique game mechanics and parts, such as the Drive-by Selector, which let players secretly scheme and target any turf before everyone reveal their plans.
* The economic perspective that comes with the creation of a crime syndicate and its murky business.
* The possibility to surprise other players through card interaction and participation in events.
* The sense of scheming as all players secretly plot their attacks and defense before simultaneously revealing their plans.
* The unavoidable conflicts and rivalry triggered by Drive-by attacks.
* Card-based combat reminiscent of games like Blood Rage, and facedown token placement reminiscent of games like Game of Thrones.
* No dice.
