Welcome to the November 2017 edition of the GMT P500 update list, whose purpose is to showcase all the new games coming through the GMT P500 system.

Don’t forget the homebrewed, two-fold rating system.

Veterans (games on the P500 for at least one month) get stars:
for the veteran game with the best growth
for the veteran game with the second best growth
for the veteran game with the third best growth

While recruits (games new to the P500) have their own, number-based rating:
d10-1 for the highest debuting recruit
d10-2 for the second highest debuting recruit
d10-3 for the third highest debuting recruit

As usual, don’t hesitate to suggest, criticize, and threaten to your heart’s content.

You can also subscribe to the GMT Monthly P500 Geeklist Announcement Thread.

Current Preorders: 151 (+151) 2 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $49 ($72)

Designer: Mike Nagel

Player count: 2 players

The Hundred Years War (1337 to 1453) was a dynastic struggle between the English house of Plantagenet and the French house of Valois for control of the French throne. Armies from across Europe would ally with these families, spreading combat as far from Gascony as Scotland and Portugal. Chivalry rose and fell on the backs of personalities like the Black Prince, Charles the Bad, and Pedro the Cruel, fought over battlefields at Creçy, Poitiers, and Agincourt. By the end of this period, chivalry would be in ashes and from those would be born the nations of England and France.

Saint-Omer to Saint Crispin is a follow-up (or, perhaps more accurately, a prequel) to Mike Nagel's Charles Roberts award nominated game Sun of York, that covers tactical battles between the English, French, and their respective allies during the Hundred Years War. The game uses a card-based system to activate units for movement, combat, and rally during each of the eighteen(!) individual scenarios. A large variety of combat units are ready for combat, including impetuous French knights and the feared English longbow men. Leadership is critical on the field of battle as command is not only needed to move combat units, but also has an impact upon how they perform. Combat is swift and bloody, with the victor determined by whoever holds the field.

Battles Included:

• LA CAPELLE (HYPOTHETICAL) - 23 October 1339
• SAINT-OMER - 26 July 1340
• MORLAIX - 30 September 1342
• AUBEROCHE - 21 October 1345
• BLANCHETAQUE - 24 August 1346
• CREÇY - 26 August 1346
• NEVILLE’S CROSS - 17 October 1346
• CASSEL - 8 June 1347
• BÉTHUNE - 13 June 1347
• POITIERS - 19 September 1356
• COCHEREL - 16 May 1364
• AURAY - 29 September 1364
• NAJERA - 3 April 1367
• PONTVALLAIN - 4 December 1370
• ROOSEBEKE - 27 November 1382
• ALJUBARROTA - 14 August 1385
• HUMBLETON HILL - 14 September 1402
• AGINCOURT - 25 October 1415
In addition to the large number of historical battles, rules are included allowing players to design their own custom armies. As an added bonus, owners of Sun of York may also use the components provided by Saint-Omer to Saint Crispin to fight out battles from the Wars of the Roses in a more compact space.

1918/1919

NEW!
d10-1

Current Preorders: 162 (+162) 1 month on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $30 ($49)

Designer: Ted S. Raicer

Player count: 2 players

In 1992, Ted S. Raicer published his first design in the late lamented Command Magazine, 1918: Storm in the West, covering the last nine months of WWI on the Western Front. The game was an immediate success, earning a Charles S. Roberts Award nomination, and leading to the design of a Plan 1919 variant which assumed a German defensive strategy in 1918 and an all-out Allied assault to win the war the following year. GMT is pleased to offer a new boxed version of these classic Great War designs, with new artwork, and including an additional 1918 Allied Offensive scenario published later in Command.
This new GMT boxed version of 1918/19: Storm in the West is a two-player system that also works fine for solo play. Units are mostly corps (divisions for the USA, whose oversized units were nearly the size of Allied corps), and include infantry, tanks, cavalry and air support. The Germans start the 1918 campaign with large numbers of Stosstruppen, trained to overcome the trench stalemate of the previous three years. This gives the German player a strong offensive capability in the first half of the game. But these “shock troops” are a wasting asset, and if the Allies survive the initial blows, growing numbers of US troops and Allied tanks will see the Germans forced into a desperate defense in the game's second half.
In the Plan 1919 campaign, the Germans are assumed to have used the collapse of Russia to stabilize the Balkan and Italian fronts, forgoing the historical 1918 Kaiser's Battles in the West. The Allies are thus faced with a strong German defense, but with a fully mobilized American army and backed by masses of tanks and planes. This hypothetical campaign challenges the Allies to leverage these arms into the world's first blitzkrieg, while the Germans fight to force a stalemate that will leave them dominant in Europe.

The Great Plains in the latter half of the 19th century was a cultural battleground. The Native way of life was under siege by an avalanche of invaders seeking land and progress. Plains Indian Wars reduces this monumental and catastrophic series of conflicts to its basic elements: A settler surge via long snaking wagon trains, the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, east and west, and the cavalry sent to protect them all. At the same time, Plains Indian Wars seeks to offer the Native-American player the opportunity to unite earlier, hold their own and perhaps even prevent European-American success.
Plains Indian Wars can be played by 1-4 players, but is best played as a two-player game. Game play averages 60-90 minutes.

Designer: Chad Jensen

Player count: 2-4 players

Golden Gate Park is a fast-playing board game for 2-4 players. In the game, each player assumes the role of a married couple spending a day visiting historic Golden Gate Park during their trip to San Francisco.
Players begin the game having just arrived from their hotel to the Music Concourse at the heart of Golden Gate Park. The time is 10:00am on a gorgeous weekend morning. Players will take turns traveling about the park visiting its varied attractions, ending the day at 5:30pm sharp for the trip back the hotel.

Every action taken by a player takes a certain amount of time, which must be spent wisely throughout the game. Walk, shuttle or taxi to places like the bison paddock, Stow Lake, Shakespeare Garden, or the California Academy of Sciences. In between attractions you will need to find time to eat—perhaps at the famed Beach Chalet—and to answer the call of nature. And you don’t have unlimited funds so be sure to mind your budget for the day.

You will accumulate—or possibly lose!—valuable experience points along the way, with the player having had the best experience for the day declared the winner.

Preorder Price (List Price): $28 ($40)

Designers: Jeff & Carla Horger

Player count: 2-11 players

Announcing four new tracks for Grand Prix!
Every race track in the Thunderverse has a historical counterpart. Some are more famous and well known than others. The four newest tracks, specifically designed to enhance Grand Prix, are no different. Adding to the 13 previous series tracks, the Grand Prix Track Pack provides four new tracks based on the most famous F1 courses in the world; Silverstone, Monza, Monaco and Spa-Francorchamps. Each provides new challenges for racers.

Three of the tracks are designed with just Grand Prix in mind. Monza utilizes the historic oval to create three unique experiences, the oval, the road course, and the monster combined course requiring a trip through the oval after completing a circuit of the road course. Each track can be used for both Grand Prixand Thunder Alley.

Components:
• 2 Mounted Track Boards (Double-Sided)
• 1 page of special track rules

Game link: https://www.gmtgames.com/p-625-grand-prix-new-track-pack.asp...

Comments:
I’ve only played Grand Prix nine times.
Compared to my 47 plays of Thunder Alley, this is chump change.
Ironically, I like Grand Prix better.

After the defeat of Operation Battleaxe in June, a lull settled in North Africa, and the Axis siege of Tobruk continued. The Allies used this time to build up their strength and the 8th Army was formed. Before dawn on 18 November, the 8th Army was ready to strike and the Allies launched a sweeping offensive into the Axis controlled Cyrenaica (Eastern Libya) in order to relieve the besieged fortress of Tobruk. After a series of swirling battles, the Axis had to withdraw and the siege was lifted.

Michael Gustavsson, co-designer of FAB: Golan’73 is back with volume IV in the Fast Action Battle series. In this game, as the Allied player, you control the XXX and XIII corps, Tobruk Garrison and the Strategic Reserve force of the 8th Army. As the Axis player, you control the DAK (Deutsches Afrika Korps), the Italian XXI corps and the Corpo d’ Armata di Manovra (CAM) of the Panzergruppe Afrika commanded by the famous Erwin Rommel. Units in the game represents regiments/brigades and some battalions, while assets are mostly battalion size and turns are 1-2 days in time.

THE DARK VALLEY – DELUXE EDITION

Current Preorders: 330 (+27) 4 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $52 ($79)

Designer: Ted S. Raicer

Player count: 2 players

New and Updated Components:
• NEW map art with MOUNTED maps!
• Thicker counters.
• Additional Player Aid Cards (including rules references to make for less rule-book flipping).
Plus, of course, correction of all the errata from the first edition, incorporated into the rules and counters. Also, as a bonus only to you who purchase The Dark Valley Deluxe Edition, the reverse side of one Dark Valley mounted map will be the Barbarossa to Berlin map, and the Barbarossa to Berlin counters will also be printed on the thicker counter sheets.

But The Dark Valley Deluxe Edition also provides me with the opportunity for a few designer “second thoughts.” TDV is my favorite design, but as the saying goes, "no design is ever finished, just published." Although the Germans intentionally have a tough row to hoe in TDV, it turned out to be a little tougher than I intended. Without changing any basic systems, but only altering a few special rules, such as the initial availability of the Soviet City Defense counters, I've made the German learning curve less steep, without changing their need to take real risks. And not all the new rules are one-sided: a simple change in the victory conditions will punish an Axis Player who attempts to hunker down in defense in summer 42 instead of mounting a serious Case Blue offensive.

I believe Raicer is the designer with the most titles on the P500 at the moment.

In the bleak future, after the collapse of our modern technological world, most of the structures we hold dearly today are no longer effective. The things that brought us comfort and ease have fallen into disrepair and disuse. Central governments have given way to localized strongmen. In some places the world is nothing but a vast wasteland and in other locals mankind thrives by calling back to its pre-modern lifestyle.

Through it all men still choose to compete and challenge each other in the various arenas. Auto racing is one of these sports that will not die. But the rules no longer apply. The racing circuits are no longer about speed and guile. Now they resemble high speed demolition derbies. The most famous organized racing competition of them all, the Apocalypse Road, is run by callous thugs and monsters who encourage drivers to arm their cars and literally destroy their opponents. It is the Roman Coliseum reincarnated.
Over time, new rules and organizational structures have taken hold. Ten teams now complete across the Thunderverse in a season-long show of firepower and twisted metal. Drivers work as part of a team struggling to complete laps under machine gun and even missile fire. The tracks, falling into decades of disrepair, are a jumbled mess of jumps, joker lanes and dirt. Much like the gladiators of old, in a time of intense anguish, the chance to be a hero, even for a day, calls drivers out to risk life and limb for wealth and food. The arena beckons, will you take the wheel?

Apocalypse Road is a race game using the Thunder Alley/Grand Prix engine. Players attempt to score points by crossing the finish line (somewhat like roller derby) and by eliminating opposing cars. The first team to 15 points wins the event and gets a double portion of foodstuffs as a reward.

Designer: Carl Paradis

Player count: 2 players

After tackling the Russian Front with the first game of the No Retreat! Series, wargamer and designer Carl Paradis revisits this fascinating campaign with: Absolute War! - The Attack on Russia 1941-44. This two-player wargame recreates the titanic struggle between the invading armies of Nazi Germany versus the Soviet Union in a fresh new way. This new approach is even faster and easier to play - making it perfect for introducing new gamers to the hobby.
The design emphasis has been placed on making the game very player-friendly and manageable in its level of scope, difficulty and time of play. With a very low total counter count and density, this quick playing (while still realistic) simulation presents players with deep strategy meriting contemplation. A system of map areas has been adopted and movement has been streamlined. Combat is handled by the two decks of cards (one German and one Soviet) - meaning no combat tables or dice to roll. These cards are the crux of the game system offering even more variety than regular Combat Result Tables. Like in “No Retreat!” they are used to generate events and special game abilities (ex: Major Offensives, Partisan Raids, Siege Artillery, Increased Replacements, etc…) and now also effortlessly resolve all battle outcomes. The set-up for a campaign or a scenario will be lightning fast: in less than 10-15 minutes you can get the game going! This high degree of re-playability means that it will reward players' experience with increased skill.

Under the Southern Cross: The South American Republics in the Age of Fighting Sail is the fourth volume of the highly regarded Flying Colors series of games on naval combat. The focus is on the southern part of the South American continent: Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, from the Wars of Independence starting in 1810 through the last naval war fought completely under sail between Argentina and Uruguay in 1841. These wars attracted naval officers recently unemployed by the end of the Napoleonic Wars as well as providing a proving ground for the first generation of naval heroes native to Latin America. Updated rules introduce river and tidal currents, modified grounding rules for operations in the Rio de la Plata and Uruguay rivers, and the use of ship’s boats to tow stranded or becalmed ships. In all, over two dozen battle scenarios ranging in size from a handful of ships per side, to full-blown fleet actions are presented. Also included is the return of the popular ship duel map and activation cards originally found in Serpents of the Seas (Flying Colors volume II), along with 18 ship duel scenarios.

Continuing the No Retreat! Series, where the Russian Front of World War II was first simulated, then taking the action to the African Front, the Italian Front , the French & Polish Fronts, game designer Carl Paradis now presents the fifth chapter: No Retreat 5: The Western Front 1944-45.

After the Fall of France in May of 1940, the Battle of Britain put a stop to Hitler’s ambitions in the West. While his attentions turned eastwards towards the vast expanses of the Soviet Union, the German Army, occupying most of Western Europe, started fortifying the coastlines to defend the Nazi dictator’s conquests against the resurgent Allied might: the vaunted “Atlantic Wall” was born. Soon, Allied troops will be knocking upon its doorstep…

In No Retreat 5, players command the Allied or German forces, invading or defending West Europe: France, Belgium, Holland and Germany proper. Maneuvering forces over hexes that are approximately 20 kilometers across, over turns that each represent between a week to a month of real time. The No Retreat series card-assisted game system is there to create on-map puzzles around each hex, unit and battle as the tense engagements rage back-and-forth and nothing is entirely predictable, and also manages the pre-invasion “fog-of-war”.

THE BATTLE OF RHODE ISLAND
Current Preorders: 494 (+5) 8 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $40 ($59)

Designer: Mark Miklos

Player count: 2 players

The Battle of Rhode Island is volume 9 in GMT’s Battles of the American Revolution series by designer Mark S. Miklos. The map board depicts the northern half of the island including the fortified American positions around Butt's Hill. There are 64 America, British and Hessian combat units and leaders giving the game a counter density comparable to Saratoga in the series. Although the tactical situation is somewhat straightforward; Americans retreating and British pursuing primarily up two main roads, the nuanced play and game texture is like that found in all the games of the BoAR series.

To ensure replay-ability, each player has a unique deck of 26 Opportunity Cards that either enhance his side or diminish the enemy. Cards are drawn at-start and occasionally throughout play as governed by the turn track. There are also mechanisms for card draw tied to accumulated casualties or the possession of terrain objectives. Players may also spend Momentum to purchase additional cards.

The cards themselves may provide DRMs, adjustments to Army Morale, leader replacements, tactics advantages, step losses or step recovery, and additional units introduced into play among other outcomes. There is also the possibility of the game being extended one game turn into "night" wherein the British launch a surprise night attack.

There are only a handful of Exclusive Rules to provide chrome including a squadron of British warships which may conduct off-shore bombardment. Players familiar with the core game system will be off and running in no time.

As a bonus, volume 9 will include a second scenario; The Battle of Newport. This hypothetical scenario features a second map board depicting the southern half of the island, the city of Newport and the British defensive works that surrounded it as well as the American siege lines. The French army is presumed to have stayed on the island to cooperate in a direct assault upon the town. It will make for a fascinating "what-if" study of the first attempt at cooperation in the war by Franco-American forces.

Death Valley: Battles for the Shenandoah is the seventh installment of the Great Battles of the American Civil War (GBACW) series, published by GMT Games. Six full battles are included.
Three Battles of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862
In a campaign still studied in military academies, Confederate General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson engaged and defeated the Union forces pursuing him. Greatly outnumbered and at times facing three Union armies, Jackson defeated them all within ten weeks, at one point completely freeing the Shenandoah Valley of Union forces. Three battles from Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign are featured.

The second sequel to the Charles S. Roberts Award-winning game Downtown, Red Storm is a standalone game that utilizes the Downtown game system to depict a hypothetical air war in May/June 1987 over the central portion of the NATO-Warsaw Pact front in central Germany. Like Downtown and Elusive Victory before it, Red Storm is an “operational” level air warfare game where players manage large strike packages and numerous combat air patrols in an effort to strike enemy targets, protect their own ground troops, and secure control of the air above the land battle raging below. Both sides field highly advanced all-weather aircraft, long-range air-to-air missiles, precision bombs, sophisticated electronic warfare assets, and networks of surface-to-air missiles and radar-guided AAA.

As the NATO player, you fight outnumbered in the air, but with a qualitative edge in technology and training. NATO faces the daunting task of claiming air superiority in the face of the initial onslaught from the Warsaw Pack air forces while also delivering bombs onto Soviet and East German ground targets already on the frontline and those approaching in the rear echelons. As the Warsaw Pact player, you must push your numerous but less flexible forces to the absolute limit in an effort to overwhelm NATO forces in the air and destroy them on the ground, all while supporting your advancing ground forces. Both players also must manage air defense networks consisting of overlapping layers of SAMs and AAA.

Like other games in the series, air units in Red Storm are flights of 1 to 4 aircraft, each tasked with different roles such as bombing, combat air patrol, close escort, or jamming support. Red Storm features more than 50 types of aircraft, including both older “3rd Generation” workhorses like the F-4 Phantom II and MiG-23 Flogger as well as advanced “4th Generation” fighters including the US F-15 Eagle, the UK/West German Tornado, and the Soviet MiG-29 Fulcrum. Aircraft from the air forces of Belgium, Canada, West Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, and East Germany are provided.

Ground units depict various types of troop concentrations, radars, SAMs, and AAA assets. SAM units are both more numerous and more dangerous than ever, with low-altitude SAMs like the UK Rapier, US Chaparral, and Soviet SA-13 Gopher joining a potent array of medium/high altitude SAMs like the US Patriot and Soviet SA-10 Grumble.

In adapting GMT’s multi-award-winning The Napoleonic Wars game system by Mark McLaughlin, Designer Greg Ticer, aided by Developer Fred Schachter, create a furiously paced, card-driven, and battle/siege-intensive strategic/operational game which can be concluded by two, three, or four experienced players in an evening or an afternoon.
Players represent the Coalition of Britain and Prussia or their nemesis, the Imperial Camp of Austria (with its Holy Roman Empire Pact Ally) and France (with its powerful Russian Pact Ally). The four main Powers never change Camps. Neutral Sweden and Denmark wait to possibly be swayed into one of the antagonist’s fold. Britain and France not only contend against each other on the continent, but upon the game’s colonial mini-maps and through an abstract naval war.

The Last Hundred Yards is unlike any tactical wargame published to date. It introduces innovative systems intended to model Small Unit Behavior in Combat during WW2. It is fun, fast-paced, and provides a very good simulation of what it was like to command combat units at the platoon or company level. The game ispurposely designed to deliver a brisk yet intensive gaming experience that forces many decisions upon you as you take command of an infantry company in Western Europe after the D-Day landings.

A TIME FOR TRUMPETS

Current Preorders: 594 (+90) 2 month on P500

A Time for Trumpets (ATFT) is a battalion level game of the Battle of the Bulge. The game system incorporates a number of concepts from two the highly playable games on the same subject: Bitter Woods by The Avalon Hill Game Company and the iconic battalion level Wacht am Rhein from SPI in 1977. In addition, the command and control concepts devised for the TAHGC version of The Siege of Jerusalem were utilized.
Most of the ground combat units in “ATFT” are battalion sized combat units. The battalion is homogeneous with regard to mission and functionality. Homogeneous, because an infantry battalion is comprised primarily of infantry companies, a tank battalion is comprised primarily of tank companies, etc. A battalion based game is designed with differentiation inherent to the system, whereas a regimental level game is designed with integration inherent to the system. For example, in a battalion level game, Kampfgruppe Peiper will include at least two separate panzer battalions, a panzer grenadier battalion, an AA battalion and an artillery battalion; whereas in a regimental level game, KGP will be comprised of one counter representing all of the aforementioned units.

This expansion set includes the most significant French forces that saw action on the Western front in 1940. Also included are the German forces that invaded France and the Low Countries, flanked the Maginot Line, and finally pushed on into France. The playbook includes rules for special units, new optional rules for Staggered Initiative, Command Span, and others, 12 riveting scenarios (including 2 historical scenarios depicting the fierce battle for Stonne), and unit summaries for the French and German units.

In addition to all the other features included in this expansion, there are two new exciting extras. The Panzer Leader rules and the respective 7/8” Leader counters of various enlisted and commissioned ranks for all forces – French, German, US, British, and Soviet; and the unique hull and turret damage rules and the respective 5/8” counters.

The TO&Es booklet includes details for the French and German forces covering the 1940 period, including the five major divisions from the cavalry and infantry arms of the French Army, including the Mechanized Light Division (DLM – Division Légère Mécanique) and the Armored Division (DCR – Division Cuirassée de Réserve). German forces include panzer, motorized infantry and infantry divisions, as well as the Grossdeutschland (mot) Infantry Regiment.

Finally, this expansion includes the next 4 double-sided geomorphic mapboards, modeling the terrain found in the French countryside including 2 historical maps depicting the terrain in and around Stonne. Add these to the geomorphic mapboards from expansions 1, 2 & 3 for added play and many possible battle combinations.

Tank Duel: Enemy in the Crosshairs is a card-based game for 2 to 8 players that depicts tank-to-tank warfare on the Eastern Front of World War II in the early to mid 1940s. It attempts to convey the claustrophobia and urgency that tank crews experienced in this bitter conflict, utilizing a simple Action system to keep the action moving at a rapid pace. Players will issue commands with the use of Battle Cards and attempt to score Victory Points by claiming Objectives and eliminating their opponent's tanks and crew.

The tank board will be used to keep track of information regarding the status of a tank and its crew. Types of condition could include, tank on fire, damage tracks, immobilized and damage to the gun.

The crew information will include, health of each individual crew member, the crews experience and moral status.

The board also contains areas to manage your spotting and acquisition of enemy tanks and range on the battle field between tanks. There is also a box to hold the terrain that the tank is currently in or its movement status as well pertinent firing information.

Here is an example of some of the cards that are included in the battle and damage decks for Tank Duel: Enemy in the Crosshairs:

Each player will be managing a hand of cards. With these cards the player will be able to take actions. Some of the actions a player may take during his turn could include:
• Fire at enemy tanks
• Move and find terrain
• Flank enemy tanks
• Attempt to improve their position by going hull down
• Load special ammunition (APCR)
When a tank receives damage, the player reveals a card from the damage deck and applies the results to the tank and the moral effects to the crew.

In No Retreat 3, players command the Allied (French and British) or German forces, operating them in accordance to one of several historical plans (represented by Plan cards). Manoeuvring forces over hexes that are approximately 30 kilometers across, over turns that represent 4 days of real time each, the vaunted No Retreat series card-assisted game systems are there to create on-map puzzles around each hex, unit and battle as the tense engagements rage back-and-forth and nothing is entirely predictable.
