Previous Session Reports

On the frigid evening of November 4, 2017, fourteen gamers met in the Official CBBS Gaming Basement to celebrate either the start or end of Daylight Savings Time. Also, to play some games. Elden, Tim, Ian, Tom, Eric Classic, Andy, Evee, Eric 5, long-lost prodigal Aaron, first timer Vivian, Shawn, Kory, Dan, and even Michael all set their clocks back. Or maybe forward. Whatever.

In honor of the season, we played Ricochet Robots. Like we always do. If you are bored with this game, just take a look at these extry special puzzles I selected just for you.

Alright, they are exactly like all the other Ricochet Robots puzzles I've ever posted. They are simply the ones I thought to photograph while they were happening. I should go back and see what the at table solution was and challenge everyone to better it, but that sounds really boring to do so I probably won't.

Elden, Tim, Ian, Tom, Eric Classic, Andy, Evee, Aaron*, Eric 5, and Vivian all earned at least one chip while playing this game. The end.

Discussion time: 10:40pm
Stowage time: 10:47pm

After an exhausting discussion about who should play what where and why, Andy, Shawn, Tim, and Elden found themselves on Table One playing the substantial Prêt-à-Porter, one of the top two games about dress-making owned by members of the CBBS.

So, the thing about Prêt-à-Porter is that the rules and mechanisms aren't particularly hard, although it's not a trivial game either. You place three guys and then do three things, in order, for two rounds before there is a scoring round. Do that for four scoring rounds, and that's the game.

But. Everything you do leads to a directly confrontation with the other players - you fight to get the best buildings or contracts or workers, then fight to carve out a lead in one of the four things that are going to score, then respond to somebody else as he fights you for something, then respond to their responses. Before you do any action, you have to play it out in your head to see how it might be countered and whether it makes sense to do something else that might have a better chance of working. After a couple hours of doing this, your brain starts to not want to brain no more goodly.

Tim got the Model (Face of the Company) in the first round, which gave him four extra stars in every scoring month. That worked well with his Retail Outlet, which turned Stars into money, which in turn worked well with the Investment house, which lets you buy extra gold money (your company reputation - money you can't spend) for green money every round. He also managed to luck into a good set of outfits for the first fashion show, with the help of an early fashion contract, which meant he racked up the stars in March and was out to an early lead.

Andy, in the meantime, got an Accountant to help with early game finances, and some fashion based workers or buildings - but his fashion draws were quite unlucky, and he couldn't put together a decent show and got zero stars in the first round. Shawn, as is his wont, spent the early part of the game building a massive empire of buildings and workers, at the expense of his own show, while Elden was aced out of some early stars by Tim.

By the midgame, Andy and Elden had pivoted to fighting for stars in this show months, while Shawn's engine was starting to click and earn him stars naturally. The PR battle tightened up - there aren't a lot of ways to get PR, and Tim's early PR building had earned him a lot in March, but Shawn soon matched him with a PR worker and then Andy built the remaining two PR cards to claim the permanent lead for the last couple shows. Meanwhile, Tim's fashion equity from his early contract ran out, while everybody else had build the capacity to get extra fashion cards, and Tim's initial lead started to dwindle.

Still, his extra stars from his Model, his extra money from the Retail Outlet, and his ability to gain $10 in gold money from the Investment House every maintenance phase was a big boost. Shawn had started matching him with bonus stars via the Spokesman, and his ability to draw lots of cards and take lots of extra actions from all his cards was starting to become very powerful.

On the final fashion show Tim had to fight Elden tooth and nail to win the Quality contest, while Andy won PR and Shawn won both Trend and Size. Shawn had managed to draw and finish six matching fashion cards, earning him 16 stars and over $200 in green money in the final show. Tim, meanwhile, had completed his fourth straight three-outfit show, and had to hope his Star to money to gold money engine that had been running all game was enough to hold off Shawn.

...and it was, barely, as Tim finished with 394 to Shawn's 372. Tim had amassed 271 in gold money all game, while Shawn finished with 222 in green money, so their paths were very different to get to such similar scores, which is always a pleasing result. Andy's early star deficit hurt him, as he finished with just 87 in gold money on his way to final score of 267, while Elden got murdered early and finished with 211.

It must have been a fiercely fought game, as the final scores are very close, with Aaron claiming the victory at 88 score points. Tom, Ian, Kory, and Vivian scored 87, 86, 76, and 70, respectively.

Evee was Dracula, because it's always a lot more fun being the bad guy. Eric Classic played Lord Godalming, Dan was Dr. John Seward, Michael was Van Helsing, and Eric 5 was Mina Harker.

After chasing the Undead Lord all around Europe, the intrepid band of hunters killed Dracula at the last possible minute. Also, the weather was excellent.

To the surprise of nobody who was paying any attention, Table Three was finished first. Therefore, they got to play another game - Century: Spice Road. Once again, it was Tom, Kory, Ian, Aaron, and Vivian who did the playing.

Ian was the first to get to five cards, and, consequently, made the most score points with 66. There is probably a strategery that involves getting fewer really big score cards that might work against a blitz, but so far I haven't seen it - whoever gets the most tends to scores the most. It may be that people aren't blitzing enough, so every card taken has a high value and thus obviously whoever ends up with the most will score the most points. Whatever.

Vivian, Aaron, Kory, and Tom finished with 51, 40, 36, and 32.

Our long national nightmare was over as we finally reached the reconfig just before 11 pm. While there wasn't actually a whole lot of reconfigging, there was more than none, so it counts. On Table One, Andy, Shawn, Tim, and Eric 5 played Century: Spice Road, a game already played at this very Game Night on Table Three. Hurm.

Once again, Tim prevailed by getting his fifth card before anybody else. He accomplished this by getting an early card that turned 5 yellows into two browns, which he activated twice to have a giant pile of those valuable brown cubes. After grabbing a big point card early he struggled a bit, since he couldn't find a card that got him green cubes and every card on the row required greens - but once those cleared out, Tim's supply of browns along with a couple cards that turned them into other colors was enough to allow him a moderately fast sprint to five cards. He finished with 74 points, while Andy scored 52, Eric 5 ended up with 59, and Shawn wound up scoring 51.

Finally, Eric Classic had demanded Ian bring and play Bunny Kingdom, so that's what they, Evee, and Kory did on Table Three.

The last time we played Bunny Kingdom Ian claimed that he had never seen the end-scoring card that can vault the second place player into first used successfully to win the game. It was funny then, because pretty much exactly that happened later that very Game Night, albeit during a different game (Village, using the Village Inn expansion).

We mention this now because the scoresheet for this playing said that "Ian was a jerk and played the 2nd Place card to win yuk". The scores bear this out, with Ian being credited with 162 score points, just three more than Eric Classic's 159, so I guess it now happens all the time. Kory and Evee rounded out the group with 143 and 117, respectively.

When Table One needed a bridge game, they selected Fuji Flush, yet another game that had already been played this evening. It's like there's only a dozen games in the Official CBBS Gaming Basement or something.

Also, this photo is what happens when Tim tries to take a picture while sitting at the game table. In his defense, the action in Fuji Flush is fast and furious, so it's hard to find a break in the action in which to meticulously stage and frame a good photo. Also, you all can go to hell. Tim Shippert is not the one on trial here!

Tim won the first two games, due to his superior skill in drawing really really high cards once he was down a single card and some bozo managed to double a 10 against his 19. Shawn won round three, no doubt due to devious treachery of some kind. Andy and Eric 5 refused to win any games.

Seven gamers expressed their willingness to stay beyond midnight for some mysterious reason. Therefore, we took advantage of the numbers to play a few rounds of One Night Ultimate Werewolf. Elden, Tim, Eric5, Andy, Kory, Shawn, and Ian were the villagers of this doomed town.

In Round One, both Werewolves ended up in the center (possibly via a Troublemaker/Drunk scenario), which meant that Minion Ian was guaranteed to win. Well, not quite - we couldn't plan to all vote for somebody different, which is the only way not to lynch somebody, because Ian would just have to not follow the plan to secure victory. The only way for the Villagers to win, therefore, would be for everybody to point at somebody randomly and just hope it all works out. Somebody figure out the odds of that happening - it ain't good.

(According to my calculations, it should happen roughly 1.75% of the time.)

In Round Two, Tim woke up as the Minion and unleashed a fiendish bluff - he pretended to be the Robber, and then claimed to be something he could not be, in this case the Drunk, because the Drunk had already been Troublemade into somebody else! It was the perfect plan, a lie that looked like a dumb mistake someone might make when trying to make a lie, and should have pointed a giant bullseye on Tim...except that Ian concluded that Kory (the former Drunk) must have been swapped into a Werewolf, so everybody voted for him and completely forgot about Tim's red-handed lie. But! As it turns out, Eric 5 was not the Troublemaker at all, but the Tanner, and was also trying to make a non-obvious obvious lie to paint a target on himself. But in all the other nonsense going on nobody caught on - it didn't help that the actual Troublemaker was hidden. So Kory hadn't been swapped, a Villager was lynched, and team Werewolf (including Minion Tim) won. Tim was almost sad to have survived the night, as a suicide lynching in support of his Lupin overlords would have been so much more satisfying.

In Round Three, everybody quickly identified Ian as a Werewolf, causing possibly-Drunk Werewolf Shawn to also lose.

In Round Four, despite the obfuscatory efforts of Minion Elden and Tanner Kory, Werewolves Eric 5 and Ian were rooted out and lynched (well, one of them, at least), yielding another victory for the Villagers.

The final game of the evening would be a seven player game of Shadow Hunters, which we used to play a lot back before everybody got old and went home at midnight or whatever.

Tim woke up as Daniel, who needs to be killed first, and so deliberately violated the letter of CBBS Shadow Hunters law: you should usually attack the person on your right, because by the time their turn rolls around they are going to forget who attacked them. Instead, Tim targeted Ian, two spots to his left. But Tim overestimated the extent to which anybody was going to remember even two turns ago, and thus he could not get Ian to attack back, and soon Elden's Charles was killed and Tim had to reveal to become a virtual Hunter.

Meanwhile, or maybe shortly thereafter, or possibly even before, Eric 5 revealed as the Werewolf in order to get his share of Counterattacks in. An early reveal is generally dangerous and probably suicidal, but Shadows are pretty powerful, and if he could wreak some havoc before going down his hidden compatriot might be in a good position. After Eric 5 was killed, Ian was the next to go, because he was Allie, who dies really easily and thus usually tries to lay low and reveal quickly so people stop bothering her. (This explains why Ian was not interested in fighting with Tim earlier, so bad luck there.)

At this point everybody but Tim probably knew who the remaining Shadow was - Tim had eschewed Hermit cards early in order to try and piss somebody (anybody) else off enough to fight with him. But it was just a matter of time before Kory revealed as Franklin and blasted Valkyrie Shawn, earning Hunters Kory and Andy (Emi), as well as Tim (Daniel), the victory.
