I don't go to Essen, but like to see what people buy and bring back.
This year, I decided to compile a list of the games featured in the game haul pics featured in this thread:
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1871704/show-us-your-spiel1...

I figured that may give me some idea of what is popular at this Essen so that I could buy/pre-order a bunch of games. It may help inspire you as well.

It's took awhile to go through the over 100 pictures that BGG Users have posted, but here they are in order from most featured in pics to less so.

It's not every game - you're a diverse lot! - but the 100 most popular.

After receiving comments, I've realised this is a snapshot in time, so I've modified the list slightly. It's still in the same order, but I've added the number bought as shown on BGG. These should be mostly Essen buys, before the games hit retail, and still in keeping with the GL title.

Yes, this little card game featured most in the photos with over 20 appearances. I didn't even know about this until I started seeing pics of it, but my 'Essen mule' was unable to get me a copy.
On my wishlist.

Tybor is a card game set in the same world as Oh My Goods.
Tybor der Baumeister contains "chapters" and scenarios set during Tybor's lifespan that serve as variants for tasks or rules of play, with 32 possible combinations.

Next up is Azul with 19 appearances.
Post-Essen I have had a chance to play this once and enjoyed it more than I thought I would, so its now on my wishlist.

In the abstract game Azul, players take turns drafting colored tiles from suppliers to their player board. Later in the round, players score points based on how they've placed their tiles to decorate the palace.

Also making 19 appearances is Transatlantic, from Marc Gerdts.
That alone has put it on pre-order. I do enjoy his games.

In the card-driven game Transatlantic, 2 to 4 players lead their own shipping companies, which transport freight, mail, and passengers around the globe. They purchase new steamships from the market, each of them historical with their individual technical data.
It's a maritime strategy game with low luck, lots of interactive choices, and tough decisions.

The much anticipated Venus Next makes 18 appearances and now have this in my collection from an FLGS who attended Essen, Thirsty Meeples.
It's smaller than I thought, somehow. Just a deck of cards and a small Venus board that goes alongside the main board.

With around 50 project cards and 5 corporations added, with a special focus on how to make Venus habitable. With the new floater resource, a new milestone, a new award, a new tag, and a new terraforming parameter, players are given more paths to victory and an even more varied play.

I don't know about you folk in USA, but 'Floater' has a whole different meaning in the UK!

With 17 appearances comes Charterstone, a new legacy game.
I'm not a fan of legacy games, but do like campaign games. I currently have 7th Continent and Gloomhaven on the go, so this won't be high on my wishlist.

In Charterstone, a competitive legacy game, you construct buildings and populate a shared village. Building stickers are permanently added to the game board and become action spaces for any player to use. Thus, you start off with simple choices and few workers, but soon you have a bustling village with dozens of possible actions.

Pandemic Legacy: Season 2 is an epic cooperative game for 2 to 4 players. Unlike most other games, this one is working against you. What's more, some of the actions you take in Pandemic Legacy will carry over to future games. No two worlds will ever be alike!

Played a friends copy last week and enjoyed it. Pre-ordered.

Noria is the debut title from Sophia Wagner. At the center of the game is an innovative mechanism called "wheel building". Each player has an action wheel consisting of three rings, with slots for a number of different action discs, onto which more discs are added as the game progresses.

The year is 1572; this year marks the 30th birthday of Akbar the Great.

13 BGGers liked this enough to take a pic of it. Its a follow on to Cottage Garden, but has a bit more depth to it. Not played it yet, but have managed to get a copy, as I love Uwe Rosenberg's games (well, except Henghist)

At the heart of the game are puzzle tiles with holes that are placed on individual forest boards to cover up treasures. When players get their hands on these, they gain more options and an edge over their opponents. All that counts in the end is to be the first to cover your forest floor completely with leaves.

I'm not generally a fan of dexterity style games, but the premise for this had me interested (and 9 of you took pics of it). Apparently though, the 3rd round becomes a bit silly, so not as interested now.

In short, Meeple Circus is a dexterity game in which you do what all gamers do when setting up a game: Pile up your meeples!
