I was on a business trip to Seattle and while looking for seafood restaurants, came across a restaurant that claimed it had the #1 clam chowder in Seattle. That restaurant was called Duke's Chowder House, in Renton, in the Westfield South Center. I decided to try and do an entirely unscientific comparison to other random seafood restaurants.

Wally's Chowder House is located in the Des Moines area of Seattle, on the west side. This restaurant (Wally's) was suggested by colleagues from another company, and there were 6 of us in total. I ordered the clam chowder with fish and chips (halibut). I suppose I could have ordered the 6 oz halibut with vegetables which would have been more healthy, but I was too obsessed with getting the clam chowder.

At the center of the table was a bottle of oyster crackers (I didn't know they were oyster crackers until a few days later). The clam chowder was creamy, and thicker than I am used to seeing, but it was decent. I liked the crackers. I think it was a bit too thick for me to consider it the "best", but it was filling and better than anything that I would order in Calgary. Okay, my frame of reference is Red Lobster here.

So I paid a visit to Duke's Chowder house on the Sunday after the Seahawk's game. The Seahawks were hosting the Redskins, and even though I have never been to a live NFL game, I hesitated in plunking down money to go see the game. It was snowy and rainy and I didn't feel like sitting in the upper stands in the rain. I further justified this by saying the Seahwaks were going to blow out the Redskins and it wouldn't be a good game to watch. There was a resale ticket for $65 in the upper stands, and midlevel there was something for $128. That seemed a bit pricy to me. Yes, I know it was a cop out, I watched the game indoors in front of a TV. It turned out to be a very close exciting game. I was cheering for Seattle of course, but the kicker missed three field goals in the first half, all wide left. To compensate, it seemed like the offence had to try harder and there were interceptions, and they had to go for 2 pt conversions instead of kicking the single point after. In addition, whenever the offence got something going, there always seemed to be a penalty that would push them back (the Seahawks took 15 penalties for around 160 yards). The Redskin defence played really well and their quarterback, Kirk Cousins made accurate throws under pressure. In short, the Seahawks played poorly, yet still had a chance to win the game, while the Redskins played well and escaped with a 3 pt win.

But enough about football. You're clamouring to find out how the clam chowder tastes, right? I knew I wasn't in Kansas anymore, when the waitress asked me what kind of clam chowder I would like? I'm only used to New England Clam Chowder, so I ordered that, but I think there was a red chowder, a white chowder and one more choice which I can't remember. The New England chowder was quite good, not too thick, and had the right mix of potato, and clams. It was a good sized soup portion as well. This would have indeed been number one on my list but for a couple of reasons. There wasn't any crackers to go with it. That's a pretty small reason to knock this chowder, but everyone else is serving crackers. Now the other reason is, I am lactose intolerant, like Leonard on the Big Bang Theory. If I have too much cheese or milk, then well, you know what happens to Leonard and it is not best repeated here. I had ordered the Rock Fish Tacos, and asked the waitress to have it made without cheese. About halfway through I noticed there was cheese in it, as the cheese was right against the tacos. Let's just say I had to take another shower that night. The waitress was apologetic and offered other food, so I don't blame her, since she had said here is your salad without cheese, so the cook must have missed the memo.

But the price for the chowder was decent, something like $4.95 for a small bowl. It was good, and could easily been #1 on this list.

I had to go to the airport after the meetings, and my co-worker mentioned there was an Anthony's at the Seattle airport. I was driving to the car rental center during rush hour, and the GPS tried to take me down a road that was closed. So I had to U-turn, and continue further along hoping the GPS would correct, which it did. So I got to the airport and decided to look for Anthony's.

The chowder was $7.95, and they gave a bag of oyster crackers with it. I was hungry and it tasted good. Not too creamy, which I like. The clams tasted fresh, and I liked the rest of the ingredients. It was a smaller portion than Duke's, but what made me put this #1 was the crackers. The chowder at Dukes was definitely good, but wasn't quite complete without the crackers.

I was in Pike Market over the weekend as well, and I regret not actually trying the chowder at various vendors along the market. I ended up having fish and chips for lunch. THere was a restaurant with a long line up called Lowes, and there was the Athenian restaurant where Tom Hanks had lunch in "Sleepless in Seattle." I'm not sure if either restaurant is famous for their chowder, but I know the restaurants themselves have high ratings.

Of course, I'm not interested in fancy restaurants. I was too busy making my way to the famous fish market where the seller's are throwing fish around, catching them with one hand in front of the crowds. In addition, they had monk fish with a sign " Come Closer, Look Inside my Mouth, I am a monk fish". The monk fish, looks like a small flattened shark. I don't even know if they are native to the west coast. Anyways, whenever any tourist got their face up close to the monk fish to look at the mouth, someone would yank a chain connected to the monk fish, making it move, and scaring the beejezus out of everyone. The person yanking the chain would also yell to make it even more scarier.

I was invited by a vendor to Salty's on Alki. This vendor was trying to do business with us, and I had accepted the dinner invitation without thinking too much about the ethics. Afterwards, it did occur to me that I really shouldn't be accepting a free dinner from them. True, I could pay myself, to get out of that situation. But I missed the meeting time, so the ethical dilemma was off the table.

So there is another restaurant to try at some point if I ever make it back to Seattle.
