Set in the Andes, Altiplano is a “bag builder” - like a deck-builder, only you're pulling tiles from a bag. Unlike the deck-builders that I've played there's a crucial difference: you don't have to use everything you get at the start of the turn during that turn, you can “park” tiles you don't immediately use on your personal player board. This greatly reduces luck because you don't need specific combos to be drawn in the same turn.

It's one of those games with numerous counters and small boards that can looking daunting if you don't know the game, but really is not that complex.

The learning curve is fairly gentle – you start with just three or four commodity tiles and a coin or two, which means you only have to focus on a narrow range of options at the start. By the time you've good more goods you're getting a handle on the wider range of options becoming available.

Very roughly, these fall into two categories. You can use your goods to get other, more valuable goods. These will be worth VPs by themselves, and worth even more if used to complete specific “order cards” or stored in your warehouse. Carrying out either of these options however is not necessarily a good idea, because doing so will remove the goods from your stock, depriving you of using them for further actions.

The second broad range of options is using goods to improve your game engine. For instance, at the start of the game you draw four tiles out of your bag at the beginning of each turn. You can increase this by advancing down a road board. You can increase the movement of your meeple between the individual location boards by buying more wagons from the village board. Or you can acquire more powerful action options by buying extensions to your personal player board from the market.

The main currency driving all this is food. Increasing your stock of it will greatly increase your tactical scope, but you don't want too much, partly because of the opportunity cost of acquiring it, and partly because it is worth nothing at the end of the game.

This was my first game with more than two players, and I take it as a sign of a good game that we each chose different strategies yet the final scores were not that far apart.

Adam focused on acquiring bonuses which increase the value of specific goods of your choice, Elly went for order cards which score highly if completed (and zero if not), Andy T went for order cards and converting silver to money which he used to buy extensions to his personal board. Once my engine was ticking over (I'd bought a second wagon, and was taking six tiles per turn) I focused on stuffing my warehouse. As we began scoring it was far from obvious who might have won.

Final scores: Elly 69, Andy T 79, Adam 88, Andy B 98.
