One should play boardgames because they want to, but sometimes it is fun to track statistics and orient your choice of game around the dopamine rush you receive when a metric increases.

The point of this list, I guess, is to collect some thoughts on games as they climb through the H-Index ranks and to see how my opinions on said games change as my catalogue of games played stretches.

Don't get too attached to this list because my disgust at being beholden to considerations extraneous to actual game enjoyment when it comes to selecting a menu for game night comes and goes!

If you'd like to see your own h-Index history you can visit ludictendencies.herokuapp.com/:user and give it a few minutes. Eh, it might crash, too, but it may titillate you in some way.

Current H-Index is 5

Codenames Duet -- 12
Catchup -- 6
Crokinole -- 5
Hanamikoji -- 5
No Thanks! -- 5
Play the following games to increase your hIndex

Crokinole -- 1 time(s)
Hanamikoji -- 1 time(s)
No Thanks! -- 1 time(s)
Whitehall Mystery -- 4 time(s)

Another one where I gifted away the base version because I was worried it would take up too much table time... Anyway, this has been a fun challenge for me and the husband as of late. He loves the game and I'm learning to love the mental and poetic stretch the game requires. We're also learning where our cultural referents disjoin and that's healthy for any relationship.

A low rules overhead with depth to boot and my normally ludophobic husband likes to play. Never met a Bentley I didn't like, either, so expect this abstract gem to hang around and help inflate the ol' hindex.

I haven't lost Crokinole in years because I haven't played my husband in years and he's the only other one who has logged multiple hours on my board. Meanwhile I've been schooling newbs with an interest in getting this to the table more often and finding some consistent competition. It's fun and it pleases me to own this objet d'art.

A friend of mine and I started working together at the same place and we needed a portable 2 player game that played quickly but offered up some psychological warfare and anxiety. This and Khmer have become staples of the lunch table. Is it balanced to the point of randomness or is there an underlying strategy waiting to be discovered? A few more lunch hours will hopefully bear fruit.

This and Catchup both have the honor of pushing me into hindex-3 territory and as my little script sometimes gives this the credit and other times Catchup, I'm just going to bring this in. It's also one of my favorite ways to start a game night AND it holds a special place in my heart because I coded a command line version of it in Erlang as practice in that language. I love trash talking and chip farming in this game and the pleading with someone, who is going to lose anyway, not to snatch up your make or break card. I've not played the tactical version as I assume I'd prefer the riskier random deal of 24.

A long, long time ago (about two or three gaming blogs started and abandoned), I owned Letters from Whitechapel and played it quite a bit. Then I got rid of it because it was all my friends wanted to play (What?). I picked up this shorter version in a pique of both nostalgia and newness covetousness and played it twice on the first day I started recording plays again. I won as Jack against two new investigators and then arrested a Jack on the docks on a lucky guess. I love it and don't for see myself dumping it for being "too popular" in this h-Index epoch of gaming I find myself in.
