"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php (Note: Due to a recent change in BGG script, this tool may not always work for users who log a high quantity of plays in a month.)

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

If you'd like to check out other fun monthly Geeklists, BaSL has a comprehensive list at his monthly Most Played Geeklist, the most recent iteration of which can be found here: Your Most Played Game GeekLists - Announcement Thread

Sorry! Sliders - Dust Level: 1 Year, 8 Months - As the kids' collection continues to grow, some of their older games get dusty from time to time. We brought this out of the dust to teach the 3-year-old, who did pretty well with it. He was pretty excited to play a game where the pieces had physical contact with each other.

Brew Crafters - 2 plays
First Published 2013
2 years, 6 months
Current Rating - _8_

Two plays of Brew Crafters this month (after having it sit on the shelf unloved for over two years). The first game was two-player and it turned out to be less enjoyable than I'd remembered. But like the more interesting worker-placement games, it's one of those with too many choices and not enough turns to pursue them all in. So I was willing to give it another try. And a couple night's later, when a friend came over, she, my wife and I sat down for a second play.

Three-player was much more interesting with the added competition over market spaces. Too late in the game, however, I realized that the quantity strategy that I'd wanted to play was never going to materialize as there just weren't enough ingredients in the market and the right "expert" cards weren't in play. As my wife showed, quality was the way to go. And though I lost, the three-player experience did restore my faith in the game.

Ten out-of-the-dust games in November. Often games just randomly undust themselves for me, but there are several here that I intentionally pushed to the table. I didn't necessarily do it just to undust them, but I wanted to play them and here they are.

1000 Blank White Cards - 1 play
First Published 1996
4 years, 9 months, 9 days
I put this on my Countdown Challenge list this year, and here it is. We got it to the table. It's more of an experience than a game, but it's a fun experience. The real challenge is in the metagame of making cards people want to see again. "Somebody saved that card? Cool." Way back when, I had gotten a starter deck, and this was my first play with that deck.

Freeze Tag - 1 play
First Published 2011
4 years, 3 months, 13 days
This is another one that I'd been looking to play again. One day, we pulled out Pyramid Arcade, selected half a dozen games we might want to play, and this was one of the three we randomly selected from that group to play. Hopefully, it won't be four more years to play it again.

Aquarius - 2 plays
First Published 1998
3 years, 8 months, 17 days
I put this in my game box because playing this a couple of times would help my h-index get to 34. I played it a couple of times. Now my h-index is 34 (however, this was not the game that put me over the top).

Mascarade - 1 play
First Published 2013
3 years, 2 months, 0 days
One of those games that I didn't remember playing until we actually started to set it up. I won't mind if it goes dusty again.

Munchkin Loot Letter - 1 play
First Published 2012
2 years, 4 months, 9 days
Not sure why the Out of the Dust tool is calling this Munchkin Loot Letter. The game is in the database as Love Letter, and that's what the Most Played and More tool calls it. I own both Love Letter and Munchkin Loot Letter, so if it was picking a version I owned, it was still a crap shoot. I left it alone, though, because I did in fact play Munchkin Loot Letter. I found a copy of it at Half Price Books and bought it even though, as I said, I already own Love Letter. I love the theme. As for the dustiness, my previous play was a different Love Letter variant. My last play of Munchkin Loot Letter, specifically, was before that.

Ticket to Ride - 1 play
First Published
2 years, 3 months, 24 days
So many games. Who has time to play the old classics? I'm always too conservative with tickets. I never got farther west than Winnipeg.

Nations: The Dice Game - 1 play
First Published
2 years, 3 months, 9 days
You want to play this? Have I played it before? Yes, yes I have. I did better than I thought I would as the game progressed. The no-book strategy almost worked for me.

Istanbul - 1 play
First Published 2014
1 year, 6 months, 26 days
You want to play this? Have I played it before? Yes, yes I have. I won handily. We stopped playing when it was clear I was going to win in one turn and nobody was remotely close to catching me. Not sure how that happened.

Color Wheel - 2 plays
First Published
1 year, 6 months, 10 days
Fun to play as a co-op and really visually appealing. I don't log solitaire plays, so it's possible I've played it solitaire in the interim.

Pharaoh - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 3 months, 25 days
Played this at the same session as Freeze Tag, above. I'm not especially enthused by this one, though. It's okay, but not high on my Starship Captain list.

The Bottle Imp - 1 play
6 years, 3 months, 27 days
Current Rating -  6.66

Was glad to get this classic three player trick-taker out of the small card game drawer for a Halloween-y outing, particularly because - like plenty of others, it seems - I'd been playing the Bottle Imp trick rule wrong all this time! I'd always played that the Imp trick counted as negative, and you weighed off putting good cards in it at the beginning of a hand versus the chance of acquiring the negative. Finding out that ending with the Bottle wipes out your score completely adds a whole different aspect to the game play! I'll have to try it again, soon... although there are few opportunities for three player trick-takers, to be fair, which is why it got so 'dusty' in the first place.

Hansa Teutonica - 2 plays
2 years, 4 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  8.5

After playing this once, buying the base game and two expansions, this sat on the shelf for far too long: a concerted effort at the game group saw it played on two tables in parallel. I was at the 'experienced' table (one play, woo!) and completely misread the game, thinking I was doing terribly, being 'that guy' and feeling sorry for myself, then going on to win by a couple of points. Good game, though not quite as super as I remembered it being from my first play. Another three player game due tonight.

The King Is Dead - 1 play
1 year, 4 months, 20 days
Current Rating -  9.5

AKA Konig von Siam. This is my favourite game design: an area and faction control game which is so tight, SO tense; just eight cards, but when do you play them? Do you sit and wait to see which faction is liable to win? Or start machinating early to force others' hands? I got a rare win... for both me and the yellow-bellied English!

Outfoxed - 3 plays
1 year, 4 months, 15 days
Current Rating -  5.5

This was a pleasant revelation: my son (now 7) played this both enthusiastically - yay! - and by the rules - YAY! - three times in a row. It's an introductory-level deduction game, which we made more challenging (I think) by having two thieves in our third game.

Nacht der Magier - 2 plays
1 year, 2 months, 6 days
Current Rating -  5.5

A Halloween-special, which I sadly managed to mess up by: first, failing to charge the inner ring (it had been sat under the bonfire all night); then, forgetting to take the board out of the box, so the pieces didn't really fall off. It's more of a toy than a game, but all the same, I was fairly ashamed of myself for mucking it up in such a basic fashion. Oh well. Fun, but not a gamer's game.

Codenames - 2 plays
1 year, 1 month, 12 days
Current Rating -  8

Played the vanilla Codenames in its co-operative mode (not as good as Duet) and found my over-extended vocabulary getting in the way of clue-giving more than it helped. Shot a few innocent bystanders, but at least no hitman.

A good month to dust off games, and the year is closing and

Hansa Teutonica - 1 play
First Published 2009
6 years, 5 months, 5 days

A better game than the dust makes seem.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) - 3 plays
First Published 2012
2 years, 11 months, 7 days

I vowed to not play this game again, and it brought nothing but discussion and sorrow. Yet, with the cooperative app, I gave it a go, and it works quite nicely.

Camel Up - 1 play
First Published 2014
2 years, 10 months, 22 days

I can do without this one, but I can't deny that this play was fun.

Sanitarium - 1 play
First Published 2012
2 years, 4 months, 0 days

Since I can't find people to play with me, I tried solo, and it worked OK - it leans on the easy side, since you have the information about the hidden objectives. Still, is definitely possible to lose - I almost did.

Mascarade - 2 plays
First Published 2013
2 years, 3 months, 3 days

Still is good, and I quite liked it with 5 players.

Boomtown - 1 play
First Published 2004
1 year, 7 months, 13 days

Tight play.

Bridge Troll - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 6 months, 12 days

I think I can play this more often, but we just have so many games in the group.

Samurai - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 3 months, 16 days

Perfectly tense as always.

Red November - 1 play
First Published 2008
1 year, 2 months, 27 days

The two people I taught the game, liked it, which means the possibility of it being played more often has risen!

And that was it!

Regards,

Only my second play ever, this time on the smallish three-player map. My Seafaring Tritons were screwed for the final turn, but I still came in second. Another player's Heroic Halflings were even scarier than my Dragonmaster Sorcerers.

How have I overlooked this gem for so long. Started logging my games religiously in 2014 and I didnt have one logged play. When my girls were growing up, we played it quite often.

Played it with my wife for the first time, along with one of my daughters and brother-in-law. Everone really enjoyed it.

This will become my go-to worker placement gateway game. Plan to add it to my 10x10 list for next year.

Only one this month. And I am surprised it was this one. Surprised it's been three years since I've played and didn't even know it's been out that long. Seems like just last year that I gave it to my daughter.

Not a bad game, but one that is easily overlooked among our other games.

Tigris & Euphrates - 1 play
First Published 1997

Current Rating -  7

Game nights often have 5 players so this one rarely fits.

Fresh Fish - 1 play

Current Rating -  6

I picked this up in a trade a couple years ago but only managed a few games with my wife. Every time I suggested it on game night no one was interested. We finally got the group to try it out... and no one seemed interested in playing it again. We sold it shortly after.

I've been playing games for a long time, so I only include games that are at least 5 years dusty on these lists.

I rejoined the 18xx subhobby in May, 2010, and I played this game just two months later, in July. I didn't care for it, as it seemed to involve a lot of shuffling trains around to optimize your position, something that was opaque to me at the time. I just played it again (after having played 5 games of 1867: The Railways of Canada and 5 games of 1812: The Cradle of Steam Railways, both of which are descendants of 1861: The Railways of the Russian Empire.

I enjoyed it more this time, since I had a better idea about what I was doing. However, I think I still prefer 1867: The Railways of Canada, which is more streamlined.

An old favorite, long overdue. Our plays were with two players; perfectly fine, but it might be better with three. 2 plays this month; 24 all-time

Looks like I've managed to play nine things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Crazy Eights -- (1 play this month; many others more than 40 years ago) _4_

Daughter #1 (newly at college this fall) lamented the fact that she'd not learned many "Traditional Games" (surprise! we'd mostly played other things.) So she wanted to learn things that would work with a deck of cards.

This wasn't the first thing that came to mind, but we gave it a shot anyway. And I was reminded that it really wasn't particularly interesting.

Of course, I'm not any more enthusiastic about Uno, either; so that's not terribly surprising.

Hearts -- (1 this month; hundreds of plays 29+ years ago) _7⅔_

This was historically my favourite of the games one could play with a standard deck. And even after that huge gap, it's still quite lovely: I found myself very happy to be playing.

Rook -- (1 this month; many hundreds of plays all 10+ years ago) _7⅔_
(images by whoami & RedV)

Not quite a "standard deck of cards": but this one was a traditional game in my extended family. So we gave it a shot, too. It's definitely a different feel than Hearts; but was still very enjoyable.

Uptown -- (1 this month; 6 plays 6 years ago) _6⅓_
(images by Funagain Games & EndersGame)

First try at a 2p game (two colours each.) The game was flawed in a couple ways.

First, my esteemed opponent hadn't played before - and the (modest) experience I'd had with the game was a huge delta in terms of expectations. So it wasn't close.

Second, I'm not convinced that the 2p game is the best venue for a beginner, either: understanding how one might be able to deploy the two colours in a mutually beneficial fashion helped a bunch. And, moreover, in a "real" 4p game, the other three colours could collaborate to hold back a (temporary) leader. But here one of the (momentary) trailing colors was helping the leader.

In any event, I think it's better (or, rather, has the possibility of being better) than it showed on this play.

Solitaire Frenzy -- (1 this month; 1 play 35 months ago) _7_

It's cute. I was introduced to Dutch Blitz and Ligretto (both) first. So the (tiny) rules deltas of Solitaire Frenzy seem wrong to me, rather than "better".

And given that (for me, at least) it's easier to come up with multiple Ligretto decks than multiple different-backed card sets, it's not somehting I expect often to play.

Puerto Rico -- (1 this month; many plays 29+ months ago) _8_
(images by paperfred & chrisknack)

I'm a big fan of this one, even if I'm currently finding it hard to get to the table. This game was great: four experienced players; end-to-end (box opened to repacked & closed) in an hour. And the result was close, too: it was very entertaining.

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde -- (1 this month; 17 plays 27 months ago) _8_
(images by Verkisto & chezzilla)

It's charming and weird and loads of fun (for me, at least) when it appears in play. This game was no exception.

One Zero One -- (4 this month; 5 plays 27 months ago) _6⅔_
(images by huffa2 & Thorin2001)

We split the four games 2-2 (with each of us winning one and losing one as the first player.) Didn't use any of the variant cards. And it was fine, if not quite satisfying.

Neuroshima Hex! 3.0 -- (1 this month; 51 plays 26 months ago) _7_
(images by Livinus & zgabor)

This was decidedly imperfect. We were using the Android App as our moderator (four players gathered around a phone.) And my memory of the rules differed in a couple ways from the application's implementation. (No worries; I'm sure I was wrong. But it was unfortunate to discover that things worked other than I'd described to the other players.)

Add to the fact that there were a few tiles we couldn't figure out how to activate, and I'm left with something decidedly unsatisfying. I'd guess we'll go the cardboard route if we were ever to try it again.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

It has been too long since this hit the table. Set it up for a couple of solo games after playing Doom and really enjoyed it. I really enjoy the combination of throwing dice, hand management and tactical positioning that doesn't seem to be in many other dungeon crawls, Hopefully wont be another 2 years until I play it again.

My first game was before I started recording plays. Pretty fun game and much more enjoyable than the first time I played because of the smaller player count and faster pace. Also the expansion heroes and nemesis had allot more cool abilities that were fun to use.

I used to play this all the time when I was still at school. A lot of my pocket money went into that game in my heyday. Nowadays, we only play occasionally with slightly tweaked, pre-constructed decks or on the computer. It is still a great design and fun to break out, but without all the deck construction and stuff there's just missing something. Ah, the days of our youth - they are never coming back... cry

Just kidding, there's so many great, fun 2-player games out there today, which don't empty your wallet on a Magic scale, that I rarely miss my MtG days to be honest. Still nice to break it out sometimes for old times' sake, though.

I really disliked my first two plays of Princes of Florence which may have been due to being fairly new to the world of board games. I'd played a number of Euro-games, but none quite like Princes. I still don't like it, but I dislike it less.

It's a clever game that ebbs and flows in interesting ways, but it doesn't completely grab me. I would play it again, but it's doubtful it will make it onto my list of favorites.

It's been almost exactly two years since I last played No Thanks, leading me to believe I brought it out as an easy Thanksgiving game in 2015. This game is simply fantastic.

I dusted off 3 games this month.

Jamaica - 6 years 6 months

I knew it had been a while since I'd played this, but I hadn't realized it had been that long. I've got to try harder to keep the dust off this one.

Ugg-Tect - 3 years 11 months

I don't care that much for this one, but the rest of the family enjoys it.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 4 – Nederland - 3 years 3 months

I like this map better than some, not as much as others.
