"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php (Note: Due to a recent change in BGG script, this tool may not always work for users who log a high quantity of plays in a month.)

If you want to be notified each month of when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

If you'd like to check out other fun monthly Geeklists, BaSL has a comprehensive list at his monthly Most Played Geeklist, the most recent iteration of which can be found here: Your Most Played Game GeekLists - Announcement Thread

The Princes of Florence - Dust Level: 2 Years, 3 Months - It's been so long since my inaugural play, I'd totally forgotten this was an auction game. I've had a renewal of appreciation for auction mechanics in the last year or so, so I wouldn't playing this one more often.

Thurn and Taxis: Power and Glory - Dust Level: 1 Year, 9 Months - I alternate maps on Yucata and this one was due up. I had the misfortune of having to discard a route early in this game but nearly came back.

Jamaica - Dust Level: 1 Year, 5 Months - Jamaica has the distinction of being one of the rare good pirate games. One of these days I'll add it to my collection. In the meantime, I really appreciated the subtle important decisions this game offers under its approachable mechanics with this play.

Dominion - Dust Level: 1 Year, 4 Months - Got one of my all-time favorites out of the dust to try out the new Nocturne expansion. I like what I've seen of the new expansion so far. I particularly like the copper replacement cards.

Macao - Dust Level: 1 Year, 3 Months - I don't get to play this particular Feld much because my wife has never been much of a fan of it. But I got in a play with my game group. The decision of which dice to use is always delightful.

Porta Nigra - Dust Level: 1 Year, 3 Months - I learned this at TriCon Fall 2016 and really liked it. My cats were able to get a good deal on Black Friday for a Christmas present. I got it to the table right away and taught my wife, who really liked it. Kramer and Kiesling have been on a roll for us lately between this and Coal Baron.

Ghostbusters: The Board Game - Dust Level: 1 Year - I've been playing Ghostbusters II in the last year since that Kickstarter's fulfillment, but we went back to the base game to get in a new Christmas tradition: the fan-made Krampus scenario.

Just the one "out of the dust" for December and it just came under the wire as we played it on the 30th of the month. Since it's first play in 2012, it usually hits the table once a year, but in this case, it's been a little longer at a year and a half. But worth the wait as it's always a pleasure to play.

With it, we also dusted off the expansion 1860: Locomotives of the Isle of Wight.

I recently moved to Connecticut, so I have been exploring the local gaming scene and working on making connections with other gamers. On my 2nd trip to The Portal, a FLGS in Manchester, I taught this 2-player (from the store's sizable library) to the only other person not already playing a game when I arrived. I started strong with some good tech cards, but ended 1 pt away from the win and he managed to sneak past me to win. Once we get our games unpacked I hope to get this back into the home gaming rotation.

Oh my, I'd forgotten how bad this is: but, wife wanted to play (an Australian-themed version) as she had good memories. To be fair, there are a few redeeming qualities: maths (handling the cash); speculation (building houses/hotels); negotiation (trading); and coping skills (landing on Sydney Harbour and getting made bankrupt). BUT -- they are far outweighed by the negatives of roll and move, random luck of the card draw and just about every other factor of the game. It was worth playing to remind me how bad things can be in the mass market and how far the hobby has come. Wife said she'll never ask to play it again: good girl!

Checkers - 1 play
3 years, 8 months, 6 days
Current Rating -  3.5

I bought a nice Chess set for my 7yo son as he wants to join the Chess club at school, but seeing as he refuses to even set the game up correctly, there might be an issue there! Fortunately all was not lost, as the set came with some Checkers (Draughts for us Brits) pieces: so it was Dad vs Mum and Son on Christmas Day and it didn't last long, although family did manage to king one piece, I had three by then. It's bearable, but there are better abstracts around these days.

Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game - 1 play
2 years, 4 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  6

I mainly use Once Upon a Time as a bedtime-story-telling device these days, which can be quite testing but is enjoyable for the little'un. I haven't tried the actual game in a long time, as I recall it having problems with people getting back into the narrative late on. Maybe being instantly creative just gets harder as you get older!

Forbidden Island - 1 play
2 years, 3 months, 15 days
Current Rating -  6.5

Very surprised this has sat on the shelf for so long: an introductory game night saw this get played due to its co-operative nature and it provided a good challenge for two new players and two seasoned ones. The hardest part about teaching this is not confusing it with the Pandemic rules (4/3 actions, hand limits, no seeding, etc).

Indigo - 1 play
2 years, 0 months, 15 days
Current Rating -  7.5

A favourite of my son a couple of years ago, he's been more interested in thematic games recently (7th Continent, Pathfinder ACG, Near and Far), but he brought this to a family-friendly game day and its squiggly looks garnered some good attention. I've always found this better than Tsuro and I really like the tension of the semi-coop-done-well four player game (although, losing out to families playing for each other can be irksome). Still, fun, and son was sneakily competitive for once, rather than just making one ridiculously long route.

Oregon - 1 play
1 year, 6 months, 15 days
Current Rating -  7

I've always considered Oregon to be a good gateway game, but it struggled to be accessible on this occasion as one player fought against the location cards, another fought against the building cards, and the third just didn't get it at all and only put out four farmers all game. Easy but unsatisfying win for the experienced player (me) and the game never got its chance to shine as I was the only one seeing the good places: all the other players were gamers, so I didn't feel I should be helping too much, but maybe I should have helped more.

Dominant Species - 2 years and 15 days. I like DS quite well, but this play was awful, with most players commenting every move made of the others - I said every action needed approval of the comite, otherwise it wouldn't be allowed. Sad return.

Dominant Species Card Game - 1 year and 8 months. Much better play than with its older brother. Still, it wasn't great, as the kid of a friend didn't grasped the game and played badly, making the scores unbalanced.

Ghost Stories - 1 year and 2 months. I played this one every year since 2012. I didn't want to fail and snuk in a solo play. But it was a sound defeat.

And that was it!

Regards,

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries - 1 Play

Rating: 9
Time in the Dust: 2 years, 3 months

Although I have played quite a bit of TTR lately, especially the Pennsylvania map, it's been quite a while since I've played Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries. It's a shame, because it's such a great three-player game.

I enjoy the the tunnels, the very tight board, and that three cards can substitute for a wild card on a ferry route (I think this is the only version of TTR that has a substitution for wild cards). This version has a 9 card long route for 27 points. In my previous games, players often caught for this near the end of the game after they had secured their initial routes.

In our game, my friend got the 27-point route early, took a tremendous lead (35 points or so) and declared the game broken. I eneded up fulfilling three more routes than he did, earning the Globtrotter bonus for a 9 point win. Guess the game isn't broken after all.

This is a nostalgic favorite of Joe Huber, and he's on a mission to get all his owned games to 10 plays. He brought this to our house con, and I joined him for a play. It's a very innovative game for its time, but swings of luck can result not only in advantages to some players (something I can live with,) but also in making some players' games uninteresting. The first time I played this back in 2009 I got lucky and won. This time I didn't get lucky and lost, and was sad that I didn't have as much to do that was interesting. I'd play it again, though.

This, on the other hand, is a game that I enjoy, though it also has a lot of luck. The difference is that in Silverton you have interesting things to do no matter what way the luck swings.

I bought this when the first edition came out and played it 20 times over the next five years or so, but more recently I haven't found people to play it with (or didn't think of it.) I've been watching the YouTibe videos done by Brian Reynolds (which I highly recommend,) and when I mentioned them to my son-in-law, he bought the on-line game on Steam for me as a gift. Yesterday Sam LaFleche, who knew that I had gotten it, suggested that we play it in physical form. My copy is still the unmodified 2nd Edition version, but it still played just fine (we didn't need to upgrade our software.) I was reminded what a wonderful, tense game this is, and why it earned a #1 spot on the BGG rankings.

I played someone's copy of this long ago at a con, and I keep thinking about how much fun it would be to have it for our cons. People often discuss the different skills that are exercised in gaming, but one they rarely mention is hearing -- in this game, you drop cubes down an 8-level cardboard tower and try to hear what floors they land on. I traded for a copy recently and we played last week at our con.

My longest "duster" so far, I knew I needed to return to LoW at some point, but the group wasn't ready back in 2013. Last Friday, it was just what was needed for a meeting on a cold, wet evening. It's easy to teach, not too involved, and everyone playing held the lead at least once. I got trounced in the end, but it was all part of the plan -- set the hook, then reel them in slowly!

Went to a 5p game night with people that generally enjoy direct conflict. I'm not much of a Small World fan, but I gladly played and did my best, coming in last. This game relies on the players for balance. You have to keep stock of who's getting how many points each turn and work together to keep everyone else in check. I can't say that I really love that aspect because it turns into this metagame of "Cindy got 10 points last turn; let's slow her down." Meanwhile, that player has been scoring 8 points every turn.

I'm always surprised what this script turns up, because in most cases it doesn't feel that long ago. We broke out IoS this month because we got the expansion and wanted to try that out. I love it and I doubt we'll play again without it!

One of my beloved Metagaming microgames. It's been far too long since I got them out and spent some time with them. This is one of the best, and one which I hope to revisit soon on its merits as a wargame.

A surprise at the end of the night at Endgame! We had a nice, crackling, crisp play of the four original characters. I'm still quite fond of this, though it can drag if you add more than four players.

My new king of undustiness. I have gone more than 10 years between plays before, but it's always been games I played when I was young or games played before I started logging. As far as I can tell, this is the first 10-year gap in my logs. It wasn't as bad as I remembered.

I put this on my 2018 Countdown Challenge list because I hadn't played it in a while. Then, surprise, it came out on New Year's Eve. So I wouldn't expect it to go dusty again in the foreseeable future.

This is an example of a game that would've been 10 years dusty if I had been logging a few years longer. Then it came out a little over a year ago. Then it came out at the end of 2017. Here's hoping it goes dusty for another 10 years.

This is the only game I've played every year since I started logging, including the 6 weeks I logged in 2004. I never play it a lot; only once have I played it more than 4 times in a year and four times I've played it only once (and before the streak became a thing). I've logged Liar's Dice every year but 2016 and Can't Stop and Zendo every year but 2004. So when it came time to pick a game late in December, I suggested this.

I wasn't impressed with this game when I first played it. I thought it was solid, but nothing I'd seek out. I tried it again online and became entranced. Not sure if I've changed since I first played it (it was very late at night so I may have been tired), but really enjoyed my rediscovery.

Hard to get played due to length and the need for players. Never disappoints, but it was a bloodbath due to both rustiness of the experienced players and new players chaos. Still a hit with everyone who played it. Really need to get this one to the table more frequently.

Looks like I've managed to play 5 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Samurai -- (2 this month; 9+ plays 8+ years ago) _7⅓_
(images by a_traveler & spearjr)

These first three are all games I'd owned and played before I started logging my plays. So my recordkeeping is a bit vague when it comes to them.

This one is cool, and a nice game. But I find that the scoring system doesn't stay reliably in my head: I'd needed to review exactly how one determines the winner regularly when I was playing it reasonably often. And that was even more true here. And I've always wondered whether I'd like the (distinctly more chess-like) "all tiles available" variant better than the (real) hand-of-five rules.

That aside: these were both quite enjoyable.

Ra -- (1 this month; 14+ plays 8+ years ago) _7_
(images by henk.rolleman & Stas)

This is one my kids liked a lot when they were little. But they haven't requested it for years.

I found it amusing on this play. But, also, quite a bit lighter feeling than I'd remembered: it felt like an extended filler (fluffy; a bit of risk management; a few possibly-clever choices; but not terribly significant) than a Main Event.

Web of Power -- (1 this month; 11+ plays 44+ months ago) _7⅔_
(images by ezwrighter & chuckles2000)

I rather like this one. Or, perhaps, liked. When I was playing it more often, it seemed that there was a great deal of tension possible.

And this particular game didn't achieve that mark: it was a bit flat. Some of that, I think, was that it wasn't played (at all) at a high level. This was decidedly a reversion to a "new folk explore the system" play. I think we need more practice!

Goa -- (1 this month; 8 plays 41+ months ago) _7⅓_

(images by tmgd & tikiguy)

The play was damaged a bit by misplaying one of the bonus powers we'd acquired in the first turn. And in a way that materially affected the way the game mutated from there out.

But other than that, it was cool: the auctions are surprisingly entertaining even (as this game was) with two players; and the game was engaging througout.

Indonesia -- (1 this month; 8 plays 31 months ago) _9_
(images by jmdsplotter & Oblivion)

I really enjoyed this play. And that despite the fact that I made several serious blunders. After the game, I found myself a bit tempted to write code to do the shipping calculations for us: that would speed up the game a great deal. Might be amusing.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.
