In my geeklist 'My kind of games… are in need of a label' I asked for a label for 'my kind of games'. The best suggestion was 'Slow games' / 'Slow gamer':

Emile wrote:
The conventional wisdom on this site is that, within the context of a certain type of game, shorter is always more virtuous than longer. This is the movement we need - to see worthwhile extended length as a virtue. To look at Die Macher as the exemplar of a game that is long and worth every moment. In the model of the Slow Food movement, we need a Slow Game movement as well, where we stop taking ourselves and our time so seriously and sit back and enjoy life at a more languid pace. Slow Gamers Unite.
In the spirit of Emile's 'Slow Gamers Unite', I created a list for Slow Gamers to confess their preference for Slow Games, which immediately made it very clear that the concepts of 'Slow Games' and 'Slow Gamer' are anything but clear.

Therefore, here I present you, the Slow Games / Slow Gamer FAQ:

What is the Slow Games movement?

Once more I'll quote the words of our prophet, Emile the Wise:
Emile wrote:

This is the movement we need - to see worthwhile extended length as a virtue. To look at Die Macher as the exemplar of a game that is long and worth every moment. Slow Gamers Unite.
In other words, the Slow Games movement is a movement of gamers that feel that to really enjoy a game, you need to take your time. Let yourself be immersed in the rich and complex world that long games offer you. Take your time to study the rules, take your time to play. It's all about the experience, the story, the epic building and conquest. (etc. etc.)

Remember these words from our prophet, they are our holy scripture.

The Slow Games movement is inspired by the Slow Food movement.
If you can choose between a fine meal in a top restaurant or 20 snacks from a burger joint, what would you pick? Now if you can choose between one Slow Game or a couple of superficial Euros or juvenile Ameritrash games, what would you pick?

What are Slow Games?

Slow games are long, epic games that focus on the experience. Slow games have lots of detailed rules and strong themes. Slow games tend to have many different aspects, but often involve at least some of the following: conquest, trade, politics/diplomacy, and/or building.
Slow Games are games for connoisseurs who aren't fooled by plastic bits and other trashy stuff that doesn't add anything to the game. Cardboard is the stuff Slow Games are made of, and lots of it.
Of course, not all Slow Games share all of these characteristics, but most of them do and exceptions do at least have most of them.

(Advanced) Civ is a classic Slow Game.

What is a Slow Gamer?

Slow Gamers are the true connoisseurs of the gaming universe, they are like zen masters among children, they are like Stoic Roman generals on the battlefield.
Slow Gamers take their time to study and play a game, to experience everything that a real game has to offer. Slow Gamers aren't satisfied with a quick fix, but prefer to be immersed in a game for many hours. Gaming is meditation to the Slow Gamer: during the game, there is nothing but the game, the development of worlds: empires, corporations, etc.
Slow Gamers take their time to fully experience everything that a long game has to offer.

Like Civ, 1830 is a classic Slow Game.

Do Slow Gamers only play Slow Games?

No, they don't.
In fact, it could even be argued that some Slow Gamers don't play Slow Games at all. Some players of traditional abstracts like Go are really Slow Gamers at heart. They take their time to study and play. They are in no hurry. They let themselves be fully immersed in the game. However, their games aren't Slow Games at all.
(On this issue, see also the words of the prophet.)

Now you may ask, 'isn't that confusing' and the answer is 'yes', but as our prophet Emile the Wise taught us: 'we stop taking ourselves and our time so seriously and sit back and enjoy life at a more languid pace'. In other words, we don't care.

Now besides these pseudo-Slow Gamers - let's call them that for now - that don't play Slow Games, you may wonder whether 'real' Slow Gamers only play Slow Games. The answer to that question would be 'no' as well. At times Slow Gamers will have a light snack as long as it well prepared. Remember, we don't take ourselves too seriously, but also remember that when given the choice between a fine meal and 20 greasy snack, the Slow Gamer will go for the true enlightenment that can only be obtained by playing a Slow Game.

Are Slow Gamers slow gamers?

That's a good question and it's important to note the difference caused by capitalization.
Some Slow Gamers may be, but Slow Gamers generally are no AP sufferers, because to them the game, the experience, is far more important than winning or losing. Remember the advice of our prophet, Emile the Wise, to not take yourself too seriously. Remember that the game is what it's about and that by over-analyzing every possibility you may very well destroy the game.
It's like a good meal. It's better to eat it and discuss it extensively afterwards (while having something nice to drink) than discussing it when served and to let it go cold. Similarly, Slow Gamers don't let their games go cold, they play them.

Then, why don't you?

Sorry, I was contemplating.

Empires of the Middle Ages is a fine example of a game that has everything (conquest, religion, politics, economics, etc.) and that takes many hours to fully enjoy.

The geeklist My kind of games... are in need of a label offers some more examples.

Are all Slow Games old and American?

No, many of them are old, but there are some publishers such as Splotter and Sierra Madre games and a few others that keep producing Slow Games. Not all Slow games are American either. Splotter is a Dutch Firm, and the aforementioned classics, Civ and 1830, were designed by a British designer.
The Slow Games movement is an international movement and so are Slow Games.

No, Slow Gamers prefer to try to enlighten the ignorant masses rather than exterminate them.

You still have much to learn, but don't fear, there are many teachers among us, who will help you on your path towards true Enlightenment. Slowly...
