"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

I really like Dominion, and Seaside in particular is really good... however my wife burnt out on the game not long after we were married and refuses to play it now. Thankfully I got a chance to play with a couple of friends while my wife was out and had a lot of fun.

Hi Everybody,
only one game out of the dust for us this month.
It was a Rolling Japan game with 6 players?
I think our last play was in 2016.
A nice rediscovery for me and for the family too as we are now more interested in Roll-N-Write games
THanks for the geeklist
Thanks for reading

11 Dusty Titles got played this month. Many of them at IndyCon, where I sought out a few favorites that I knew I had played in a long time. There are so many good games. I am pushing to get older titles I like played more regularly, but it is difficult to balance with the Cult of New and their pushing of new games.

I loved the movie the first time I saw it years ago and am a sucker for all bicycle racing games. This game is one step above a print and play, but I love it. No dice, no deck of cards, movement replenishment based on drafting off of other players. Will gladly play this anytime. Never again will it go 6 years between plays.

It took me a few turns to recall the flow of this game and we played with an "open" vault which makes it less of a memory game which I enjoyed. Very tight end game scoring. Going to dig this one out of storage and put in the game bag.

A dry cube pusher with a little more player interaction than most Euros. It had been a while since I played the base map and although it looked like I was winning and became a target, the player collecting those bonus markers got HUGE end game scoring points and swept past all of us. Love this one. Any map, any time.

A heavy thinking game is not my normal final game selection at a con, but I was rather fresh for a Sunday/Day 3 and we gave it a go. I remember this one being tougher to grok a few years ago. Maybe I enjoy it at 3 players more than 4? Good to knock the dust off this one. Plus I discovered it a top 5 all time game for a good gaming buddy, so I will push to get it back sooner.

I like to stretch outside of my normal gaming comfort zone at times and social deduction games plus games with 10 + players fit that bill for me. We played a few times back to back and I really enjoyed having a lot of gray role cards in the mix. I'm not very good at this one, but I enjoy the experience.

Could not believe the enthusiastic response I got when I suggested this at IndyCon. Found out it was a favorite of my opponent too. We split 2 hotly contested games. Great matches.

I enter the IndyCon tourney just to play against good players and see how they operate since I normally play this with family or people learning games at libraries so I don't go all out. My plans exceeded the number of trains I had. I executed a train rush strategy kind of by accident which caused a little chaos among other players. Did not win, but was a good time.

WOW! Has it really been that long. Used to a great game to close out the night at the FLGS and a buddy always brought it. Will have to consider packing this one more often.

Played it at 3 different meetups. At a brewpub to refresh on rules, at a library where it was the "featured game of the night" and I taught and then at another library meetup that I popped into. Always a good, quick smash on other players game.

I used to play this all the time. In fact it was my favorite Gateway game to introduce to other people. Then. . well, I just don't play as much with new people anymore and it fell by the wayside as newer sexier games flooded my shelves over the years. So happy to get it back to the table, even if I did come in dead last.

Played this a few times when I first got it, but rarely have 3-4 players (which is think is where this shines). It was a big hit this time around.

We pulled Notre Dame off the shelf as part of our 10x10 challenge. I had added this Feld title to our list this year to ensure it got back to the table for more play time. It is a simple, elegant design that is quick and easy to play. I like the game but feel a little more depth, more play opportunities with more than 2p or more variety in the cards would help get this to the table as regularly as other Feld titles in our collection. We still have a handful more to enjoy as part of this year's challenge.

My oldest was home from college for Spring Break and asked to play this one. A bit of a surprise to me, but I'm not one to complain. It was just good to get some quality time with her that included some game time.

meeple Keep playing...

Munchkin Loot Letter - 1 play
First Published 2012

Current Rating -  7

Both my games are very close to each other it seems! And they were this month both played on the same day! Loot Letter is kind of going out of my collection within some time - not sure how long it will stay, as I prefer to play the other variants including the "pretty princess" Love Letter, where as Loot Letter and Munchkin in general are less interesting for me.

But it is always nice to play Love Letter from time to time, and this time it was apparently within a span of a year. Earlier this year I did actually play Archer: Once You Go Blackmail... which is a Love Letter variant with alternative rules.

Thebes: The Tomb Raiders - 1 play
First Published 2013

With a little more pleasure I also played the Thebes card game! This is nice and I enjoy both Tomb Raider and the full game. And I look forward to play it again! Hopefully within a year but the way that I play games at the moment it does not seem to be the case as I try to reach my 100 games by adding played games into a box - but still open to take them from the box if someone really want to play a particular game.

No matter what, it is a great game that I enjoy playing!

Games, games and more games!

Lots of dusty games this month as a I made an effort to play some of the older games that hadn't tabled recently, instead of just playing the new hotness repeatedly!

Blue Moon City – Dust Level 2 years 10 months

This has tabled multiple times in the intervening time, but never with me in the game – my husband, and some of the others in the game group, enjoy it far more than I do, so I tend to be choose whatever is on the other table!

Viva Topo! – Dust Level 2 years 7 months

The kids were wanting some games, but weren’t wanting any of their usual fare, so we pulled out this much older game that they used to enjoy, and it seemed to go over well.

Angry Birds: The Card Game – Dust Level 2 years

This is a game we tend to take on holiday with us, but play very rarely between then. As it happens we haven’t played it on our last few holidays, so the last time this played was our holiday exactly two years ago. Since then we appear to have mislaid one of the dice, which did slightly spoil this play. I suspect the kids are outgrowing this one anyway, so it might not see many plays in the future.

PAC-MAN Game – Dust Level 18 months

The children are growing up, so these more luck dependent dice games aren’t so popular anymore, but they were looking for a simple game to play and this one appealed. Another game I don’t suspect will see many plays in the future, but I’ll keep for a while longer.

Black Box – Dust Level 18 months

I enjoy this 2 player game from time to time, but it’s better if you don’t play it too often, or you remember all the patterns.

It's Mine! – Dust Level 18 months

I think this one might find itself traded before long, as we so rarely play it. It’s fairly unique, but just isn’t that exciting.

Samurai – Dust Level 17 months

These older games just aren’t familiar enough with our games group to hit the table. In the end we played it 2 player just to get it played, although I do really prefer it with more.

Cribbage – Dust Level 17 months

A classic 2 player game that deserves to come out every year, but is competing with so many other games that it obviously missed this time around.

Bollox – Dust Level 17 months

This used to be played while waiting for other players to finish Magic the Gathering games, as it’s quick and easy to play a few hands in that situation. With the demise of our regular Magic the Gathering group, this game has also stopped tabling regularly.

Iron Dragon – Dust Level 17 months

Not a surprise to see a crayon rails map hit this list, as it takes us about 18 months to work through all of the different maps in turn.

Uchronia – Dust Level 17 months

We preferred the sleekness of this over the more messy Glory to Rome, so traded away Glory to Rome, but it doesn’t appear to be as well balanced in terms of variety of strategies and it just becomes a building race. Now on the trade pile.

Wacky Wacky West – Dust Level 16 months

I enjoy this old SdJ game, but it’s another one that most gamers in group don’t recognise, which doesn’t make it easy to table, and the kids aren’t that into. Definitely a keeper, even it does only table once a year.

Egizia – Dust Level 15 months

It’s very surprising to see this on the list, as it’s usually a game that is played multiple times a year. I think it’s been knocked out of regular rotation by other newer games this year, but hopefully won’t go that long without another play.

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization – Dust Level 13 months

This one only half counts, as I have played the new version in the meanwhile, but it has been over a year since I’ve played this version, unfortunately as it’s one of my favourite games. Our longer heavier 2 player game slot has been taken over by other newer games last year.
