"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write a little something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

If you'd like to check out other fun monthly Geeklists, BaSL has a comprehensive list at his monthly Most Played Geeklist, the most recent iteration of which can be found as a link here: Your Most Played Game GeekLists - Announcement Thread

Shattered my record for most dusty games in a month. I have no idea why this coalesced like it did this month, but it was a lot of fun revisiting a bunch of dusty games!

Poker - Dust Level: 4 years, 11 months, 1 day - My father-in-law suggested we play some poker at a get-together. It's been awhile, but the old instincts returned from dormancy quickly. Fun time and I wonder how long it will be before the next opportunity presents itself.

Atlantis Rising - Dust Level: 4 years, 4 months, 4 days - Surprised it's been this long. This is a quality cooperative game. After playing it again, I feel like playing it some more now. I'd forgotten how challenging and addicting the game can be.

Krosmaster: Arena - Dust Level: 4 years, 1 month, 16 days - I thought I'd tried a game on BGA after they added the game to the lineup. It wasn't long before I remembered why I hadn't thought of this game in over four years. This game is all appearance. The minis are awesome, but the mechanics leave something to be desired. The biggest problem is the seemingly insurmountable advantage the first player has. I'm not sure why I still own this game. I think I'll add it to the trade pile.

Order's Up! - Dust Level: 3 years, 5 months, 16 days - I have totally forgotten this game. When I logged a play of it this month, I thought I was logging a New to Me game. But apparently I've played it before. I'm not sure what I thought of it before, but it was a fun time this go around. My sons really liked it and I imagine we may play it more often in future visits to the local board game cafe.

Discount Salmon - Dust Level: 3 years, 1 month, 15 days - My son's Cub Scout troop was doing a game night, so of course I volunteered to supply the games. This one worked out really well. It's a great theme, can accommodate a wide variety of players, and is quick to play and tons of fun. It's always nice when I get a chance to show off my play mat for the game too.

The Magic Labyrinth - Dust Level: 2 Years, 11 months, 19 days - I wanted to see how my youngest son would do with this one, so I suggested we play it during our latest visit to the local board game cafe. I'm not sure if just got lucky or is a natural talent, but he actually won the game.

Alhambra: Big Box - Dust Level: 2 years, 6 months, 12 days - Haven't played since getting through all the Bix Box modules, but it's still one of my all-time favorites and I felt like getting it back to the table for my birthday. I got to try out my new module randomizer deck I printed off from the file section online, which worked out well. And now I'm inspired to back the new Kickstarter. I need that Stefan Feld module in my life.

Emira - Dust Level: 2 years, 5 months, 7 days - This is another all-time favorite I got out of the dust for my birthday. I scheduled a demo of this, had my wife make me a harem cake for the event, and hosted eight players in two epic simultaneous games. So satisfying!

Siam - Dust Level: 2 years, 3 months, 19 days - Hadn't played in awhile and felt like a quick loss on boiteajeux. Reminds me why my first edition physical copy is a better experience. Nothing beats those pieces.

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game - Dust Level: 2 years, 3 months, 0 days - Haven't played since I got burned out on LCGs a couple years ago. But a friend wanted to learn and we went through the first couple of base games scenarios with him. I think I might be ready to dig this out of my collection and start going through the stuff I haven't played yet.

Merchants & Marauders - Dust Level: 1 year, 10 months, 24 days - Had a chance to get this off my Unplayed Shelf. I wouldn't mind playing this a little more often and exploring some more of that expansion content. Used the contraband and expansion cards in the new game, which were cool.

Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island - Dust Level: 1 year, 8 months, 25 days - Haven't played since my wife and I got frustrated beating our heads against the third scenario's wall. But a friend wanted to try out the new time travel promotional scenario, so we gave it a go and squeaked out a win on the last round. This might be another one I'm ready to return to.

Signorie - Dust Level: 1 Year, 8 months, 7 days - I'm happy BGA added this to their line-up. Unlike Krosmaster Arena, I think I will continue playing this. Lost a re-familiarization game pretty handidly, but felt like things were returning to my memory by the end of the it. Still looking for a good deal to add it to my own collection.

Rattlebones - Dust Level: 1 year, 5 months, 29 days - This game makes me happy every time I play it. Surprised it got dusty. Don't expect that to happen again anytime soon.

Carcassonne - Dust Level: 1 year, 5 months, 21 days - Was able to play this on BGA after upgrading my account to premium level. I prefer the spin-offs, but the original is okay from time to time. I'm glad BGA seems to have programmed a lot of the expansions, because those will be interesting to explore in future plays.

The Great Zimbabwe - Dust Level: 1 year, 1 month, 4 days - Got this to the table again as part of my monthly Splotter demo. I alternate months of Food Chain Magnate and other Splotter games. I've got a friend who was particularly interested in learning this one and was happy to accommodate his desire. I won both games I played this month by keeping myself the lowest VR level.

Archaeology: The Card Game - Dust Level: 3 years, 10 months, 25 days - I traded this away awhile ago because a guy really wanted it as a sweetner. I figured I could get it again eventually since it's just a little card game. It connected with me in the latest math trade and I introduced it to my youngest son, who had a fun time digging up treasures and scoring cards.

Since the app isn't working, I will do this by hand. Games will be added when I find them.

DUNGEON PETZ - dust level: 3 years and 2 months

Great game that simply have fallen in the cracks of too many games.

NOTRE DAME - dust level: 1 year and 10 months

Too good of a game to stay in this condition. But I can't complain, as I sold my copy and simply don't have easy access to it anymore.

COSMIC ENCOUNTER - dust level: 1 year and 3 months

What in the hell? One of my favorite games entering the yearly dust? Such is the destiny of having hundreds of games between the people in our group.

AT THE GATES OF LOYANG - dust level: 1 year

Not only the dust came off, I also did my best score ever: 19 prosperity and 12 money!

Has it really been over 3 years since I last played Galaxy Trucker?? It's a fab game, but it can a bit stressful to play, and really needs the right players for it to work.

Thanks to the android app, I was able to introduce my kids to the game, and then we got the boardgame out and gave it a try... I never finished a full game with the kids, and my logged play is when my wife and I subsequently played it with some church friends who had never played it before.

Feudal had about 35 years of dust on it when I played it with my daughter this month. We had fun, although the game does show its age a little. The concealed setup aspects remind us of BattleLore (Second Edition) and we already play a variety of chess variants.

The Stars Are Right had a little over two and a half years of dustiness. I suspected that my usual opponent would be good at it now, and she is. She lost to me in a first play, and then beat me twice thereafter.

Hijara had 22 months of dust on it when we got it out early this month. I lost this one too. It's a quick little combinatorial game.

Nexus Ops had gone quiet too long at 20 months. Prp tanked her economy by failing to keep units in her base refineries in the early game, but she managed to catch up, and ultimately to win--even though I had an excellent territorial advantage.

I'm sad to see this here. I still like it, but there are so many other games now in its class that are easier to get to the table. It's fairly susceptible to table captaining, so you usually need a table full of strong players. Or a table full of people content just working towards the same goal and not actually, you know, cooperating.

I really enjoy this game but have barely played it. I decided to include it in the line up for BillCon as a wild card pick. Everyone at the table acknowledged how it was an interesting game that felt different than most other games we've played. We also agreed that it would be even better if we actually played it more often or were more familiar with it. Given how relatively quick it plays, we might be able to squeeze it into a game night (if we can ever get those back on track).

The new players definitely felt they would play better the next time. I was working the middle connection and show how got beat to the punch, but jockeyed for the lead with two other players in a move to the end game. However, the ultimate winner got an engine going and just started cranking out keys to boost his multiplier to take the win. Take that surge away and it was a very close and competitive game.

meeple Keep playing...

Guess Who? Extra - 1 play
2 years, 4 months, 15 days
Current Rating -  5.5

My son (7yo) has been bringing some games we haven't played in a while back into the rotation, which is a pleasant change from him just asking for Trollhunters or Star Wars on TV. He still occasionally manages to mess up his side of the Guess Who? board but, for the most part, can play the game properly now - and at a comparable level to me (there's a good deal of chance). Guess Who? has always been a decent mass market deduction game; the Extra bells and whistles (literally!) are fine.

Villa Paletti - 1 play
1 year, 3 months, 4 days
Current Rating -  7.5

I bought two sets of this so that we could play mega-Villa Paletti and, while it obviously takes longer, it's still a fun dexterity game and the big crash is quite deafening!

For Sale - 1 play
1 year, 2 months, 25 days
Current Rating -  7.5

Used in it's primary role as a teach-as-you-go filler, everyone new to For Sale thoroughly enjoyed its two simple auction mechanics and charming art. I enjoy the 'pings' on Messenger after game night when people get in touch to ask what that game was and where can they get it.

Ice Cool - 1 play
1 year, 1 month, 22 days
Current Rating -  6

My son is finally reaching the stage where he will actually play games by the rules: I suspect a lot of people out there can sympathise to a degree, but James - bless him - has spent a good proportion of his 7 years ignoring the rules in the box almost from the moment we open the game for the first time. So, it was a pleasant change of pace to actually play Ice Cool by the proper rules and to be beaten fair and square as I drew all 2s to his 3 value score cards. A bit swingy as a two player, but still penguin-Weeble-flicking goodness.

Kanagawa - 3 plays
1 year, 0 months, 25 days
Current Rating -  7

Another game my son brought out, which in turn made me take it to a gateway game night and it went down well there, particularly due to the art. I had one player who just could not make any decisions for herself and consequently won the first game as I made most of those decisions: I reduced the help on the second play and was pleased to see someone else take a deserved win.

The Enchanted Tower - 1 play
1 year, 0 months, 14 days
Current Rating -  7.5

A highly justified Kinderspiel winner from a few years ago, this is a great 2p/team game of reading, bluffing and a little light deduction and memory. I drew great satisfaction from secretly spinning the 6-sided tower which I guessed my son had deliberately placed so he knew where the real keyhole was... the look on his face when the key didn't free the princess was priceless. Evil - but fair - dad moment!

I was surprised to see that it had been a year since my last play of Paris Connection. This used to be our go to filler for a good while but I think it has fallen out of rotation due to its setup time. Also, the fact that we really enjoy For Sale may also have something to do with it.

This is a plain and simple dexterity game. My son hated it because he lost (recurring theme with dexterity games, I'm afraid...)

This is a nice two player game that I enjoy from time to time: The game is a card driven area control game with variating point scoring - and there are even enough point scoring blocks so that you have a whole extra set apart from the one in play giving a potential different game every time.
Control is done by math: Red play a 5 card, Blue plays a 2 card: Red adds three soldiers to the region in no soldiers are already there. If Blue have two soldiers there, then Red removes them and add one soldier to the region. Most points after five rounds (points are also calculated using counting all points for all regions and giving the differential points to the highest faction (Blue: 14, Red 12 = 2 points to Blue's favour). Winning option two is to get maximum points in Round 3 or Rounds 6.

It's been a long time since I played Uno with real Uno-cards! I have played Uno on the mobile phone, and when I play card games I mainly play Olsen which is a 52-card game similar to Uno, where you can either use a standard deck, or use special Olsen-cards like I have.

Last played before this month 11/12/2016.

We played two partial games in May. Both games were incomplete. We only have about 2-1/2 hours to play a game on our weekly game night and we can't seem to even come close to finishing this. Both games had a fair amount of rules checking.

I'll have to set up a weekend night so we can finish a full game. I love the anything can happen vibe that goes along with this game.

We went ahead and picked up the expansion. I can see us playing this a lot when we get the rules down.

Inhabit the Earth
2 years, 6 months
Based on the enthusiasm a geek buddy of mine has had over this game recently, I dusted it off for a game with my wife recently. We'd both played the game numerous times back in 2015, but she remembered nothing about it so it played out as a learning game. A painful one at that.

Learning new games, my wife has a tendency to play fast and loose. Which is fine when the action is play a card and discard a card, but not so fine when you have to evaluate the moves of up to six different animal tokens. This "go-go-go-stop" nature of the game toyed with her patience too much; so I don't think we'll be playing Inhabit the Earth again any time soon.

A very good month for dusting off some older games, including a couple of very dusty ones! I've been making an effort to work through some of my older dusty games, rather than always play the new ones - I'm enjoying the variety of gaming, but it is making me realise that possibly some more of my games should start being traded away, if this many are hitting the dusty list in a month!

Age of Steam - Dust Level 4 years

It’s pretty much exactly four years to the day since I last agreed to play this, and I’ve only played it three times since 2009, when it went from being a game I really enjoyed and played regularly, to a game I started to dread playing. Partly this was bad experiences with game opponents; partly it was dislike of the expansions, which back then were being used for most games. Nowadays I only play with the base game or first expansion, and while I wouldn’t say I love it, I don’t hate it anymore.

Goa – Dust Level 2 years 7 months

Another game I used to really enjoy, but then found in my third pregnancy that I just couldn’t cope with the brainwork for it, and refused to play it for over a year, and since then I’ve never really got the love for it back. It’s ok, but I get frustrated by the “draft” of tiles at the start, and when played with the same group, it can get quite repetitive, as everyone tends to have a favourite strategy.

The Pillars of the Earth – Dust Level 2 years 3 months

I’m not quite sure how a game that used to be a favourite of both mine and my husband has ended up going quite so long without a play. We bought the expansion to add variability, but although it’s helped, I don’t think it’s added enough replayability for it to continue to come out regularly this many years on.

Mad Gab – Dust Level 19 months

The problem with this party game, is that after you’ve played through the box a couple of times you start to remember the phrases, and the tricks for training your ear to hear them. This makes it hard to introduce the game to new players and it still work. This time I played it with my children, and my older two seemed to enjoy it, but my youngest found it too hard. I’m tempted to get rid of this one – if my children don’t request it soon it might vanish off the shelves next time I want to buy a game (I have a one-in one-out policy right now!).

Mü & More – Dust Level 18 months

A game that’s hard to table as it’s so much better with exactly 5 players, and it’s not a player count where it’s easy to table a game when it’s not well known. We played this one 18 months ago with mostly the same group, and they were keen to try again, so it might start to see more table time in the future, now it’s better known.

Outburst Junior – Dust Level 17 months

I bought this junior version of Outburst for my children, as we already have two adult versions of the “ten words on a card” game, but actually my children weren’t that fond of it (my daughter’s the only one who really likes party games), so I’ve ended up playing with adults instead, and actually in some ways it’s better than the more dated adult versions I have – certainly the topics have aged better. The red screen isn’t working very well though – I might need to find one from a different game before I play this again.

...und tschüss! – Dust Level 17 months

I went to quite a bit of effort trading for this game a few years ago, so I’m surprised it’s hit the dusty list so soon after that! It’s just competing with too many other fillers in the same spot, and doesn’t tend to leap out at you as an option to play.

Phoenicia – Dust Level 16 months

I sometimes wonder why we keep this, when we almost always choose Outpost over it, but it is a fun alternative to pull out from time to time, and is definitely shorter, especially when played with 5.

Doge – Dust Level 15 months

Only good with 3 players! And a very old game, so not well known. This is the problem I have with Doge, although recently with having 6 at game night on a regular basis, 3 player games have found themselves tabling more than usual. I’ve never been a big fan of Colivini games, but I enjoy this one occasionally, in a weird kind of way.

Ra – Dust Level 15 months

I’ve escaped for over a year! Actually, I don’t really mind Ra that much, but I am pretty terrible at it, and find it rather frustrating, plus after nearly 80 games I can’t really get very excited about it anymore!! It’s definitely tabled without me several times in that gap, so there’s no reason for it to leave the collection anytime soon.

Therapy – Dust Level 15 months

It’s not the sort of party game that would work with everyone, so tends to get tabled with particular groups, just occasionally when you’re wanting something light in an evening to laugh at. We only play to four pegs nowadays – partly to shorten it, partly because we’ve lost so many pegs we can’t play to more! But that makes it a short fun game that doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Recently got a package with expansions, so we played with one of them. It's a nice, clean and entertaining design and I like the humorous illustrations. We played twice via Tabletopia, but this is only the second time the physical copy got out. Shame, because I like it. But the cards need sleeving, definitely.

More than a year? I think we didn't play normal Pandemic for an even longer period, mainly because we played Legacy and The Captain Is Dead scratches a similar itch, but we enjoy it even more because of its theme. Still, the Cthulhu version of Pandemic is entertaining and can be quite tough (we lost only a single turn before we would have won, duh).
