"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write a little something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Lost Cities - Dust Level: 3 years, 1 month, 8 days - I don't play this very often because I prefer the board game version more, but I decided to do a game on BGA to kill some time. I wound up dominating my opponent, who kept getting over-optimistic and trying to advance too many tracks each round. He killed himself with negative points and I won very comfortably. It was not the sort of play that inspires me to play it more often.

Monkey's Gold - Dust Level - 2 years, 8 months, 14 days - This is a cute Haba kids game that has been overshadowed in the collection by cuter kids games. But I wanted to diversify the four-year-old's board game repertoire, so I broke this one out. There are a few interesting timing decisions to make during the course of the game, but the game has a lot of luck too. But both boys had a fun time learning and re-exploring it, so that's the important thing.

It Happens.. - Dust Level: 2 years, 4 months, 17 days - I like this game better than most people. It's a fine family game with a cute theme and some satisfying decisions to make throughout the game. I wouldn't mind getting this to the table more as my oldest gets more comfortable making strategic decisions.

CV - Dust Level: 1 year, 8 months, 14 days - My friend Chad taught me this awhile ago and I only recently had a chance to add it to my own collection. This is shaping out to be a nice casual game to play with my wife late in the evening. She likes the theme and she's dominated both of our plays so far.

Tak - Dust Level - 1 year, 1 month, 30 days - The wife suggested some Tak to break up the month of Ganz Schon Clever and we played best out of three games. The first one was a long one won by me. Then my wife won a quick one. Then I bucked the going-second disadvantage with a dramatic win in the third game. Tak is great stuff and one of my Top 10 games of last year. It was also my most-played game of last year, but apparently all of those plays were in the first half of the year.

Gaaah, shame on me! I love this game. But I know we haven't played again after our first game. So I considered getting the expansion, but before we wanted to know whether it was worth it, because, well, it never gets played. We played 2p with the Duel of Magicians rules, but only base game. And we had a blast. Explanation took a while, because we had to re-learn everything, but the game was through in less than 1 hour! There is absolutely no reason why we don't play it more often (in our memory the playing time was far, far longer, which was probably one hindrance). And yes, I backed the expansion .

This game's last outing was as a place-holder on a busy game night when I was the only teacher: I was under the mistaken impression that it was simple enough for people to teach themselves and play... seems I was wrong then. Well, the rule-leaflet could be better, but it's really not that difficult and my 7yo son picked it up quite well except for Knizia's usual twist which, in this case, is only scoring as many good tiles as you have bad tiles. It was fun enough with us two, that it might suffice sometime as a filler elsewhere.

6 nimmt! - 1 play
2 years, 11 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  7.5

Ha! Only played this last night and it sneaks in. This game may appear to be chaos and - to be fair - there's more than a dash of luck involved (especially when playing with imperfect information), but good play is rewarded. Of six players, one was truly playing a card at random and she lost heavily: of the other five, three of us got zeroes in a couple of rounds; and the steady-Eddy player won. I still like it.

Ghost Stories - 1 play
1 year, 3 months, 27 days
Current Rating -  8.5

A co-op that will never leave my collection: it worked well as a two player stand-in on a night when group numbers fell awkwardly. My novice partner got into the game very quickly and played extremely well which, along with some experience from me, meant we pulled off a clean win after at one stage having 11 ghosts out. He enjoyed it so much, he asked to immediately play on Hell level!! I'm sure we wouldn't have lasted long, but we had a social game to get to.

In short, Ghost Stories still rocks and, if you have never seen the 1987 movie A Chinese Ghost Story... SEE IT!

Last play before this month: September 29, 2014.

Caylus is one of my early favorites. I think I’ve played it at least 25 times but back in the day I didn’t consequently log my plays, and most plays probably were before I created my BGG account (June 2006). I’ve played it at all player counts and liked it most at 2-3p, least at 5p due to downtime and the huge screwage factors. But in the end it was a cunning game, the Mother of All Worker Placements.

Newer, quicker, sweeter games took over and Caylus became forgotten. I played it once more, four years ago and when a friend visited me this month, we decided to blow off the dust and play it, for the first time against each other. It wasn’t a very positive experience. In the first turn already he denied me to build the stuff I wanted to and from then on our focus was more on blocking than building. Oh, I won but wasn’t able to build any of the prestige buildings.

So I lowered my rating from 8 to 6. It’s still a good game but the passive aggression of blocking, to such degree that victory is denied, gives some bitter aftertaste. On hindsight this is a mean worker placement game causing more frustration than fun.
(2p, 1x)

Also played:

Strada Romana

Last play before this month: April 25, 2012

O boy we got a major rule wrong and a situation arose where all wagons were frozen on their spots. The game appeared to be broken, but a quick search at the BGG forums taught me that we were wrong. More clarity in the rule book would have helped...

Strada Romana is a set collection game where the players can move 10 wagons through Ancient Rome and pick up stuff along their way. The wagons don’t belong to any player and can only move from left to right, or the opposite. In the middle of the board the wagons collide and must jump over each other to escape the traffic jam.
We should give this at least one more spin, eventually using the later added optional rules.

These first two surprised me a bit, because we've obviously played the main games much more recently, but I then realised that on those occasions we've probably had a bunch of newbies so I probably left out the expansions on purpose to simplify the games a bit.

Oh, and I played the new version last year as well, but I must say it solved some problems, and created new ones. I did NOT like priority based on where physically you are on the board. How would that work on a cube track anyway?

Dust level: 4 years & 6 months

I'm somewhat surprised this fun distillation of Liar's Dice-like party games is only at 6 plays now, but probably I don't attend enough parties anymore. It was fun as always.

Loony Quest
Dust level: 2 years

Two years ago my kids were no match. Now, with a 10-year-old boy and a 8-year-old girl, things are a lot more even, thus fun level increases.

Pyramid
Dust level: 1 year & 10 months

I already liked the game before, but it was just too slow with kids 5 to 8 years old. Now, after almost two years, we played it 4 times in a row as now they played focused and suddenly the game was fun & fast.

Two games dusted off this month.

Thebes - 9 years 10 months

The second time I reached out to someone here on BGG, he and his wife brought Thebes. We played it, and we did enjoy it, but my wife and I never met with this couple again. So when I went to game day this month, and someone was setting it up to play, I joined in.

Zombie Island - 1 year 3 months

Still just okay.

The big winner had to be Liftoff!, so dusty I had not started logging games the last time I played it (so 10 years or so). In my first play, solitaire, the US won the race in 1971 (outside Kennedy's decade deadline) with an Apollo landing and return, while the USSR struggled against catastrophic failures in the Soyuz program.

In face-to-face play at game group with four, we called it in 1965 based upon advances and budget with Robert Collins's ESA leading, Mike Reiling's USA in second.

Liftoff! got dusty because it overstays its welcome. In addition, a 98% safety factor seems good on paper, but once you start rolling the percentile dice 20 times for a lunar mission, bad stuff starts to happen.

Rating: d10-7 out of 10.

Other dusty plays:
Formula Dé - 1 play
First Published 1991
2 years, 0 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  6.4

Merkator - 1 play
First Published 2010
1 year, 5 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  7

I really want Merkator to work every time, but it's hit or miss. Some games, the cards flop right and you get synergies and player interaction. Other times, no one follows and the play is multi-player solitaire. At least this play, the cards meshed well for interaction.

We played Legend 7 from Journey to the North expansion. We tought we were doomed early in the game, but decided to persevere. And we won! We had a really good time.

Lords of Waterdeep

1 year, 9 months
Current Rating: 8
Plays in June: 2
Total Plays 19

Lords of WaterDeep is one of my favorite gateway games. It’s the best intro to the worker placement mechanic available. I brought it to our Wednesday gaming group twice this month and it got played both times. Apparently my group feels the same way that I do. My version is a very pedestrian copy: no expansion and no pimped Meeples, but it plays just fine no the less.

The main reason for the dustiness was that I had a backlog of unplayed games that I was working though and others had new games I was interested in trying. Although I doubt I play Lords of WaterDeep as much as I had in the past, I plan to keep it in my regular rotation.

- I'm not too fond of this, but it had been so long since I last played it I agreed to give it a try when one other guy and I were looking for a quick filler to play while other games were being played. It was close, but he beat me in the end. The play really didn't change my opinion of it much.

- I was psyched to finally get another chance to play this. It was very tight and pretty much new to us all. I had forgotten how to play and I was a different faction than before, so had different options and goals. Close ending, 3 of us had achieved our victory conditions at the end, but my last move put me 1 extra pt over my vc while knocking back another player, giving me the tie breaker. We all enjoyed it so I am hopeful that more COIN games will be able to be played soon with this group.

I played this at the end of a game night and had forgotten how fun it was. It's a tight little 5-10 minute game. Definitely a great play, though not quite as good as the other Q game from Gigamic, Quarto.

Zombie Dice - 2 years, 9 months, 26 days
This tiny push your luck game is a light amusement. It's not great, but when you have a few minutes, there are worse ways to spend your time.

Trickerion - 1 year, 9 months, 9 days
Like the previous poster who played this, I'm ashamed I haven't played it in almost 2 years. Terrible! I played it because the new kickstarter was running, and it confirmed my thoughts that the game is amazing. Going to try and get it out again within a month or so.

The Resistance - 2 years, 5 months, 4 days
The Resistance still stands as one of my favorite social deduction games. I run games of this for my class often, but rarely get to play, so it turns out I hadn't actually played myself since Jan of 2016. This play was at a local game night occasionally attended by Don Eskridge, the designer of The Resistance. It was fun to have him in the game, especially when he started accusing me of being a spy. (HE was the liar, not me.)

Roll for the Galaxy - 1 year, 5 months, 7 days
I love this game, and played a lot of it when it first came out. In January, I put it on my 10x10 list for the year, and finally figured I ought to get a play or two in before things get too out of hand.

I enjoyed my first play. Now, in the second, it was decided by the luck of drawing the Meteor card, alongside huge amounts of AP, made me consider this one for the trade pile.

I was not a fan of Isle of Skye during my initial plays, possibly because they were five player games, but on a whim I wanted to try this again and I am glad that I did. A fantastic game that plays under an hour with some interesting decisions in regard to the price setting mechanic and the various ways to score each round.

Neue Heimat - 1 play

We decided to bring Neue Heimat out this week and it was nice to play it again. We played a three player game which I enjoyed considerably more than my previous five player experience. We also only played two rounds instead of three and declared the winner solely based on points. I found this to be a huge improvement and will definitely use this format in future plays.

Lots of slightly dusty games, and a couple with rather more dust. I feel like I'm finally catching up on my "dusty" games, as more games were played with only 12-15 months of dust this month, rather than the 18 months that has been more common recently.

Dorn – Dust Level 2 years 8 months

I was reminded why it’s been over 2 years since I last played this. It didn’t help that my husband had played several times in the interim, so remembered it better than me and completely flattened me, but I do remember getting frustrated by the game.

Hare & Tortoise – Dust Level 2 years 7 months

This is an old family game that has been living in my house for the last few years, but I keep meaning to return to my parents. It’s quite fun for an occasional play, but not one I would pick out regularly with gamers, and my children aren’t in to it yet. Showing its age a bit I think, although I think it was a good choice for SdJ.

Bloody Legacy – Dust Level 17 months

After a couple of years of playing this very frequently with my children, I was almost glad of a break in plays. This time we played with adults, which I hadn’t done for some years!

The Bottle Imp – Dust Level 16 months

This used to be more of a favourite as a 3 player short filler, but has dropped out of favour recently, as my games opponents have changed. Introduced it to a new player this month, to attempt to get it back to the table again.

Cutthroat Caverns – Dust Level 16 months

This is a favourite of one of my friends, but as we rarely see him now, this game hasn’t tabled for a while. Also, as we played it so often with him, we’ve never really introduced it to our regular gaming group, which makes it harder to table with them. Tried this month, but I’m not sure how well it went down.

Monopoly Deal Card Game – Dust Level 16 months

This cheap mass-market game was very popular on release, but I think we’ve maybe explored everything about this game, as it doesn’t really excite anymore.

The Castles of Burgundy – Dust Level 15 months

A game I enjoy from time to time, and hasn’t hit this level of dust before, although it rarely comes out more than twice in a year. Although I enjoy it, I don’t love it, and nor does anyone else in my group. Can also be very slow with the wrong players!

Hacienda – Dust Level 15 months

I used to love playing this online, back in the days when I played online regularly, but have never played it much in person, which is a shame as I do enjoy it.

Starship Catan – Dust Level 15 months

Another game we used to enjoy playing much more than we do now. After this play we made the decision to put it on our trade/sale list, as we just weren’t enjoying it anymore, and it’s already left our collection.

World Cup Tournament Football – Dust Level 15 months

Not a game that excites enough to come out too regularly, but it’s rather different, and with the World Cup on, it was relatively easy to table this month!

Medici – Dust Level 14 months

Another one where its age makes it hard to table nowadays, as newer gamers haven’t heard of it, and it needs to be taught. Not a bad choice when you’re wanting a shortish game for 5-6 players though, and as I’ve played it over 60 times total, it’s definitely not been a disappointment, even if it doesn’t table much anymore.

London (first edition) – Dust Level 13 months

Just squeaked onto this list for the second year in a row, getting played just over ever year. I think after 20 plays I just don’t find this very exciting anymore.

Ticket to Ride: Europe – Dust Level 13 months

Just squeaked onto this list, although I have played the other version between this. It’s just not a game we pull out that often, although I do enjoy it from time to time. This time wasn’t so enjoyable, as we played the Big Cities version, which didn’t appear to work well 2 player – it was just who could drill the ticket deck better in the late game!

TransAmerica - Dust Level 13 months

Just managed to play this one on the last day of the month too. Not one that usually gets dusty, but the person who regularly chooses it hasn't been a regular recently!

This is really an edge case. Some times I actually record a play for expansion kits, some times I do not. In fact, for this play I recorded it, but put down '.1' for number of plays, which I guess is enough for the Dust tool to pick up on.

Dust Level: I played this 4 times in 2008 (the year it came out), once in 2010, and once... yesterday!

I was at a friend's house. He was showing me how to fix the rubber lining around my windshield with a tube of silicone and a caulk gun. While we waited half an hour for the adhesive to set, naturally we decided to play a game.

Apparently Oregon is a favorite of his. The rulebook was so well thumbed it was coming apart at the seams. The cards that came with the game were so worn out he'd scanned them and had a new deck at a larger size printed.

My recollection of the game was that it was playable enough but nothing special. The board is a grid, and instead of being labeled A-B-C-D-E the columns have pictures on them to show you where to play, and you draw cards with the pictures on them to enable the play. You have meeples to play, and you also have tiles to play (matched by a different, smaller set of cards), and the interesting thing is that whenever you make a play on the board that puts a meeple next to a tile, you get the score for it, regardless of whether it was the meeple or the tile that was played first. So when a tile that scores well gets played, subsequent meeples played will tend to cluster around it; conversely, once you've played a meeple, you try to add good-scoring buildings next to it.

The game made a good impression this time because it turned out to play so nicely for just 2 players. (It goes up to 4.) It didn't make me rush out to find a copy for my own collection, but it'll make me happy to play it again any time the opportunity arises.

Good to play this again. It's really quite unique - a race game where the economy is fuelled by area majority. The fact that players an manipulate the order of the city scoring makes it unpredictable.

In a discussion about "forgotten games" after the second Maharaja game, Lewis & Clark was mentioned. And so it wasn't really surprising that it was brought to the next game night.
Lewis & Clark has plenty of fun & original mechanisms and beautiful artwork too.

Alan likes the old games and the small games and this is both. When I encountered him at Origins, this is one of the ones we played. It had been long enough since I'd played it that I thought there was a good chance it pre-dated logging. But indeed, I played and logged it about 5 months after I started logging. Fun fact: This was the second "bunny" game I played on that day. Look for Bunny Kingdom on my New to You list. Entirely coincidental. Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes.

1 year, 4 months dusty

Here's an admission -- my copy is still unplayed, so I guess it's not even really dusty.
I played the game twice last year, for the last time in February 2017, then got my own copy as a wedding present in September, and now I finally played the game again with somebody else's copy still.
It's just not easy for us to get to the table, because I am only home with my partner every two months or so for a weekend (I live and work in a different country than he does and am at present on a different continent even), the game is not best with two, and we only have about one friend who would play such a heavy game. So my partner has still not played it!

My recent play was at a game group that I currently attend regularly, and it was as amazing as always! For the first time, I actually came somewhat close to winning and was in the lead for a long while, but ended up 2nd.

Not a game to play every night, because it's so brain-burning, but a really special experience whenever it is played.

Edit: ALSO:
City of Iron
3 years, 2 months dusty
Also not my copy, but I was really glad to play this again. This is one of the first games I bought when I was majorly getting into boardgaming in 2015 (I'd liked modern board games for a long time, I just didn't start a buying-and-playing spree until 2015). At the time, I played it several times with friends, but it was rather hard to get to the table on the account of not being good with two and always taking about 3 hours to play.
I have to say that, having played many more different games in the past 3 years, I did not find City of Iron as amazing and outstanding as I remembered it, but it is still a really good game with many unique aspects that I have not seen in (m)any other euros in this form.
Well worth a play!

It's hard to believe that was once my wife's and my "go to" game has sat on the shelf for four years. We dusted it off and played it twice this month. The first game left me a bit disappointed and questioning my rating of it, but the second was much more enjoyable. And then it went back on the shelf, replaced on the table by the new Clans of Caledonia.

Battle Sheep - 1 play

Hmm...I guess I never rated this one. Probably a 6. It plays really quickly, which is nice, but I'm not too excited about it. It's fine.

I should also count Ticket to Ride: Switzerland, which I played today in the map pack with India, and which I played nearly 10 1/2 years ago when it originally came out (but recorded on the Switzerland expansion). I rated it a 6.5 then and I think that's accurate. The ticket draws are just too lucky in this map.
