"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

Empire Builder - Dust Level: 2 years, 3 months, 11 days - This is one of my all-time favorites and one of my Perfect 10-rated games. The only reason it's dusty is because I own the entire series of crayon rails and like to cycle through the entire series before repeating a play of a particular entry.

Zauberhut - Dust Level: 2 years, 3 months, 11 days - This is an obscure Haba title I found at a thrift store a couple of years ago. There's a memory mechanic that is actually fairly interestingly done and the theme of trying to get into the snack cupboard is cute and one that my kids can relate to. I taught the youngest this one with this play and he enjoyed it quite a bit.

Railways of the Western U.S. - Dust Level: 2 years, 3 months, 7 days - The Western US map might be the most challenging map of the series because of the high quantity of mountain tiles. I featured this map at my most recent Railways Saturday demo at the local board game cafe and we used the major city dials too, which are a really interesting module in that they provide both positive benefits and negative obstacles during the course of a game. I had a very satisfying come-from-behind one-point win thanks to managing to fulfill one of the tough 8-point barons.

Animal Upon Animal - Dust Level: 1 year, 8 months, 2 days - In a unique circumstance, this wound up being a dusty play for me but no one else in my family. My wife has been playing this with the youngest at various events where our oldest son is doing something and the youngest needs to be entertained. But I had a chance to join in on a home game this time and was impressed at how much better the youngest is at this game than he used to be. Practice really does help!

Pez - Dust Level: 1 year, 5 months, 17 days - This is one of my trademark obscure games I love showing people whenever the opportunity presents itself. This time, my wife requested it and suggested we play it with my oldest son, who had just watched his little brother get a bunch of pez dispensers at a birthday party. This is a weirdly fun game and my oldest had a great time with it. He was genuinely crushed when I filled up my dispensers before he did.

Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age - Dust Level: 1 year, 5 months, 4 days - I don't own a physical copy of this and play it at yucata from time to time. Unfortunately, it seems to be a solved game as everyone tends to pursue the same strategy of turning rock into workers and building as many monuments first as possible and the game comes down to avoiding too many negative point rolls and getting the desirable advancement unlocks first. The sequel is probably more interesting, but I haven't played that in awhile either.

America - Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 19 days - Surprised this got dusty. It's one of my favorite party games and one that my father-in-law enjoys quite a bit. We played it on Independence Day and I managed the win thanks to some strategically timed "No Correct Answer" predictions.

Tournay - Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 11 days - BGA has a new variant setting available for this game that I tried out where everyone starts with just a single worker. I wasn't a fan of that and do not plan on playing that variant again. The game remains an interesting tableau-builder to break out from time to time, though.

Ra - Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 2 days - Played this with my father-in-law when we got together for my and my wife's anniversary. It was a big hit and he was very competitive. Knizia games have been working out well with him, especially the auction-centered ones, so I'm going to continue bringing those to play. This one worked out particularly well because of the Egyptian theme, which he has an interest in.

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization - Dust Level: 1 year, 1 month, 29 days - Tried out the new "peaceful" variant on BGA. I'm not sure if I like it or not. I like being able to concentrate on the other non-military aspects of the game, but it did seem to lack some of the tension. But I'm not always in the mood for the kind of take-that tension this game promotes, so I think ultimately this may be a variant I play from time to time.

Can't Stop Express - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 29 days - Learned this a year ago when I demoed games for Eagle/Gryphon at Origins. I finally got around to assembling my own copy and introduced it to my wife as a roll and write we could intersperse with Ganz Schon Clever. It has filled that role quite well and we played it a bunch this month.

One of the games, actually, the ONLY game I pack in my bag when its time to go to Comic Con. As long as you have a flat surface to play on, you're good to go. Standing (sitting) in line for hours on end gives you plenty of opportunities to pull this out.

Melee - 1 play

If I had been logging plays when I was in high school, it would show somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-40 years between plays. Steve Jackson's MIBs were demoing the new v2.1 Melee rules at Comic Con ahead of the new KS campaign for the game. It was just as fun and easy to play now as it was back in the 1970s.

I intentionally undusted Morels for my Countdown Challenge, but the others were just randomly played, mostly with people and groups that I don't usually play games with. These are all games that I enjoy, but they just don't come out. Morels is a two-player game, so it has that working against it.

Roll for the Galaxy

Dust Level: One year, two months
Current Rating: 8.5
Plays this month: 2
Total Plays: 10

The last time I played Roll, it was at BGG Con 2017. I really enjoy the game, but after not playing it for a while, I was a little rusty on the rules. (Actually I am not sure if I had ever read them. Someone else had taught me.) I had a few chances to play it earlier in the year, but with players had never played it before and were new to the gaming hobby. One evening I got to the point of setting the the game up, when I realized the rules weren't as ingrained in my frontal cortex as I had previously thought. I didn't want their first experience with Roll to be ruined by the down-time of me constantly referring to the rule book. I packed up my game and we played something else.

So finally, studied the rules at home and watched a rules video or two. Then, coming to game night well-prepared to teach others, I brought Roll for the Galaxy to the table with confidence. Although I didn't win either of the games we played, I was competitive and it was as fun as I remember it being. Everyone enjoyed it. It's a good next-step game for newer gamers in the hobby.

I believe if you are going to introduce others to a game, you must be well-prepared. Teaching new players a game is a sacred trust. The instructor must understand the game well enough to give a simple overview, know how much of the game you must teach before you can start playing, and anticipate potential points of confusion. A well-prepped game instructor is the difference a good or a bad gaming experience.

A big old seven-handed play of this one. I did respectably, despite being the player both least experienced and most rusty.

This play fulfilled my 1x1 challenge for 2018! I love Gnostica, but I don't get to play it so often these days. A little two-handed game with my daughter is enough for me to keep from entirely ossifying.

While dusty, this play was also new-to-me, in that it was the first time I ever tried the character drafting rules in the FFG second edition. I started as the Fellowship, and I guess my drafting was inferior to my opponent's because the Fellowship got spanked twice--just a little bit harder by my opponent than me. (We didn't re-draft for the complementary second play of the match.)

I find it hard to believe over three years have passed since I played Tokaido. Although it's not a game I can see myself playing very often, I just assumed I've had more occasions to actually play it. But I guess not (probably because there are other "gateway" games I'd play with three or four). But in this case, my wife and I dusted it off to entertain my sister and her two kids.

My sister and her kids do play some Euros like Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne. I pulled out Tokaido specifically because it's rules are about the same difficulty level as those. That and my niece is a bit of a Japanophile.

It worked okay. Everyone stayed engaged (although my poor nephew was clearly exhausted). And as usual, my wife won.

Still good fun. My (7yo) son went off 'children's' games for a while as he decided he was too grown up for them: fortunately, he's happy to have some simple fun again and I'm glad, because games like this really should be played (especially so they can deserve the large amount of space they take to store!). The gimmick here is a bellows which puffs the ships around - this brings a lot of grown-ups to their knees, let alone kids. My son designed a co-op variant which, bizarrely for him, was actually fun!

Brought out at a gateway game night and it worked well enough (although I forgot about the sharing your beans option). It's a good roll'n'write which came out before they were popular. A lot of variability and an OK solo option.

Spooky Stairs - 1 play

Not my son, but another gamer's son got to play this: it's a very light roll'n'move memory game, but good fun nonetheless, and the 5yo beat a bunch of 40 year olds (and we tried!).

Takenoko - 1 play
First Published 2011

Cutesy game which is effectively set collection, though it doesn't look it. I have issues with the die (the extra action is almost always best, so roll a lot of them for the win). I should probably try this against gamers to see if I'm missing any depth, other than being annoying with the panda/gardener placement.

Blood Bowl: Team Manager – The Card Game - 1 play
First Published 2011

Played as a distraction while England lost the football. My second play: more frustrating than the first... all the 'bonus' cards I got were useless (and I forgot to use them when they weren't). The game was won by the 4 pt merchandise card - which was a random draw from the deck. Still hoping to try this with my old work crew.

A great filler, easily broken by - let's be honest - idiots. You tell people to not score points, then they go and take all the cards. A couple I played this with were so intent on messing with each other, the three other players at the table scored 0, -2, and -2. YES! NEGATIVE POINTS. Ridiculous!

Cube Quest - 3 plays

Another fun game with my son - pain storing the mats, though. He's pretty mean at this and is getting better at coping with losing. I'm beginning to not have to 'throw games' either, which makes it more fun for me.

Time away from the game group and several other games in the same weight is the reason for the dustiness in this case.

A busy month spent dusting for me, as I have 9 games for the list.

Jet Set - 4 years 7 months

My friends Michael and Melissa were kind enough to oblige me in playing this game that they like, and we were joined by Ruth (not my daughter).

Carson City - 3 years 3 months

This came out at my game group. I'll play it but I'll never suggest it.

Dixit - 2 years 6 months

My wife's friends came over, and my daughter suggested this to close the night.

Magical Athlete - 2 years 5 months

Same wife's friends, and we had a blast playing this one. SOOOOOO good.

Labyrinth - 2 years 4 months

I tried the solo variant, to make sure it was a good recommendation for someone else here on BGG.

Guillotine - 1 year 10 months

Came out at game day when my daughter and I had a half hour until someone else's game ended.

Knit Wit - 1 year 7 months

My wife and daughter broke this out at random.

Castle Panic - 1 year 1 month

My daughter and I played this cooperatively.

The Settlers of Canaan - 1 year 1 month

My daughter and I played this competitively, joined for a second game by my wife. WELL worth the $15 I payed for it a very long time ago.

Whew.

I had set up the Harper's Ferry scenario a couple of years ago but had to abandon it to host the gaming group. I finally got it back on the table and worked through the first turn solitaire, with the mechanics coming back to me little by little.
End of Turn 1.

The tension mounted in Turn 2 as Jackson routed the Martinsburg garrison and swung east to cut off Harper's Ferry. McLaws and Anderson had seized the Naval Battery and Loudon Heights was occupied. I was about to move an unwieldy stack to the CSA force display when it "exploded" from my fingers all over the board. At least I got through half the scenario before disaster struck, and I'll play again soon.

I was drafted as a third player at gaming group and got stomped by Robert Flynn and his son Patrick. They both play the app version, and I hadn't played in so long that I didn't get a coherent strategy going for the first few rounds. I made my private goal of Employer and tied with Patrick on civics tiles, but Robert took the Industrialist and his private goal to win on the top row of the scoring track, with Patrick second and me at third.
Suburbia for 3 from a previous play.

Games, games and more games!

Lots of dusty games this month, as I inflicted quite a few of the games I've been struggling to table with adults on my children during their holidays - with mixed success. It was nice to cross a few more games off my 2+ years dusty list, as I really don't like too many games sitting on that list!

Formula Dé – Dust Level 2 years 11 months

I used to play this regularly, then it dropped to about once a year, but nowadays I don’t play much with the gamers who I used to enjoy it with. Eventually I pulled it out to play with my children, on the simpler one-lap race, just to get it to the table! Not quite as fun as the multi-lap experience with tires/weather etc, but it was still enjoyable. I'll hold on to this a while longer, but I do wonder whether this is a game I should be thinking about trading on, if it's that hard to table nowadays!

Zaubercocktail – Dust Level 2 years 10 months

My husband likes us to keep this game, but it really isn’t popular with gamers, so rarely tables. It’s a variant on Pit, but with children I’d prefer to pull out Pit, and gamers don’t really enjoy the Pit-like trading, so it hasn’t really found a group where it can table. Not helped by the fact it really needs about 6 players to shine. This time I tried it with my kids, but they weren’t that fond of it.

Jenga: Tetris – Dust Level 2 years 6 months

I think I should maybe get rid of this edition of Jenga, as we tend to always play the wooden version, on the odd occasions when we do pull this out. Not sure I need both editions for a game I play once a year at most!

Say Anything – Dust Level 19 months

I’m amazed this has been that long, especially as we played it no less than 7 times in 2016! I can’t really say why it fell out of favour for a bit!

Captain Sonar – Dust Level 18 months

The problem with this game is that you ideally need a large group to play, and a large group who are happy to play a real-time game – easier said than done. In the end I tried it with my children, 4 player, and it’s turned out to be a real hit, and we played it 4 times at the end of the month!

Wits & Wagers – Dust Level 17 months

This quiz game tends to get forgotten, as when people are looking for this kind of light quiz game nowadays they head for Terra or Fauna. We pulled it out this month though, and it was enjoyed so much we played it again later in the month. It also helps that it works with 7 players!

Igel Ärgern – Dust Level 16 months

Bit too simple to come out regularly, but is a fun race game when you want something short and a bit different.

Galaxy Trucker – Dust Level 15 months

I’ve been trying to table this for a couple of months now, and then when it did first table earlier in the month, I was shunted on to the other table!!! However, I did then manage a play later in the month (although with a very unsatifying third flight, when my ship’s back was blown off thanks to some unlucky dice rolling early on, and I ended up retiring!).

Code 777 – Dust Level 13 months

I struggle to get deduction games to the table, except for P.I., and this one in particular people find confusing. This month someone suggested it, so I leapt at the chance, only for that person to end up on the other table, but at least she got it to the table or me!!

Apples to Apples – Dust Level 13 months

We didn’t have enough players for Werewolves at my annual BBQ, so instead we pulled out this as a light post-BBQ game to play with a mix of gamers and non-gamers before heading to bed. Always light fun, and this sort of situation is perfect for it.

LETTERS FROM WHITECHAPEL - Dust level: 3 years and 5 months. I like this game, but this out of the dust play was rather boring, as we, as policeman, failed to find Jack's trail most of the time, so it was all guesswork almost all the time.

ROLL FOR THE GALAXY - Dust level: 3 years and 4 months. I'm not a fan of Roll. I played Race dozens of times in this three years period, and haven't mised Roll one bit.

COCKROACH POKER - Dust level: 2 years and 4 months. After I explained the game, someone at the table asked: "Yes, but where is the game?". It was in good mood, still, there are doubts if the game would work, but I was confident, and the game, as always, delivered. Everyone had a lot of fun, hassling and talking all the way through. I should bring this more often.

ZOGAR'S GAZE - Dust level: 1 year and 11 months. This is a game that can overstay its welcome, taking too long to finish, alognside many lost and/or furtrating turns. Not a good recipe for a game. Still, I enjoy it, particularly when playing in 2 or 3.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - Dust level: 1 year and 8 months. This one simply fell out of rotation, as everytime it hits the table, we have a memorable experience.

Out of focus as to not identify the cylons:

STEAM - Dust level: 1 year and 6 months. I truly am pretty "meh" about steam, and could pass another year+ without it. Much rather play Railroad Tycoon or the much simpler Steel Driver.

SPACE ALERT - Dust level: 1 year and 1 month. Another good one.

That was it! Regards,

This is a great game (1st edition) to play both solitaire and with others. The combat mechanism is more random in solitaire as it is with a d12, but I kind of like this a little more than the "Stone-Paper-Scissor" method used with the A-B-C combat cards.
"Survival" rate of this version is less than 15% - but I don't remember how much it actually is - 13% maybe

In accordance with my standard practice, I'm only reporting on games that have at least 5 years of dust on them. That amounted to 3 games in July. I played a lot of games during the month, but most of them were favorites that I played at our house con and at the World Boardgaming Championships.

This is a fairly unusual game from Winsome Games in that it has quite a bit of randomness. I was amazed to see that it had been more than 8 years since my previous play because, as you can see from my rating, I enjoy it quite a bit. The "theme" of the game is that you are the locomotive manufacturers that sell trains to those crazy 18xx players, and you need to upgrade your designs because the old ones go out of style and demand disappears. It's a game in which you must time your investments properly, and in which the effectiveness of your plan depends in part on the die rolls, but substantially on your decisions. I made a lunge for victory that fell just $5 short, and this meant I was completely out of position to win on the following turn.

Tower of Babel - 1 play
First Published 2005
7 years, 4 months, 26 days
Current Rating -  7

This game is good with 3, mediocre with 4, and horrible with 5. The heart of the game is card shortages, and there are no card shortages with 5 because the supply of cards is greater but the demand for them is the same. I organized a 3-player game with Dan and Ian Miller at our house con and it went well.

Spinball - 1 play

I had played this game on someone else's set exactly 5 years earlier, and in the interim I was able to get my own copy. When we got it out, we saw that my waxed ping pong ball had gone lumpy. We played one game with it, but I need to get a new ping pong ball and wax it.

Aton remains awesome. My problem is that I keep trying to go for temple victories and disregard that first cartouche. "I'll just dump my 1 cards there." This is not ideal when your partner plays a 4 there, twice in a row!

I'll rarely turn down the chance to play a classic Knizia title. Very happy to revisit this one. Simple, elegant, happy to play again. Takes me back to Euro gaming of 15 years ago.

Argent: The Consortium - 1 play
First Published 2015

We added the "mask" expansion and some "scenario" expansion which made winning a game end goal worth 7 "points". This is a bit of a chaotic game anyway and these expansions added more chaos. There are so many action spots, bumping from those spots, "ghost" action spots, etc. Not as simple, not as elegant, but I enjoyed the ride this game took me on. We played with 6 and I have always played this at the higher player counts so it seems to take a little longer than it should, but I accept it and enjoy the time exploring one of the rare longer games I'll put up with since it allows for some creative game play through the spells and wizard special actions.
