"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Alchemist - Dust Level: 2 years, 11 months, 8 days - This was one of the games my wife and I bought at our first GenCon together years ago. We played it as part of the Mayfair ribbon quest that year and then picked it up for a few bucks at the consignment store. It's a very unique game with a strategy that is not readily apparent. I say this because I'm not very good at the game and I don't think I've ever won it. There's an online implementation at yucata, but I don't recommend it because the turn-based system there is not a good fit for a briskly-paced game like this one. I brought it out of the dust to introduce to some friends of ours and it was a big hit. I think they're going to try to track it down now.

The Grizzled - Dust Level: 2 years, 9 months, 28 days - Played this with friends several times when it first came out, but not since. But I connected with a copy in a recent math trade and introduced it to my wife. It's as challenging and engaging as I remember. We managed to win our first 2P game, so we're going to up the difficulty a little bit next time.

Karnickel - Dust Level: 1 year, 11 months, 29 days - This is a favorite of my kids', but even favorites get dusty when competing with newer games and the kids' collection has expanded greatly in the last couple of years, especially as the oldest in turn expands the types of games he plays. But this is right up the youngest's alley now, so it will likely get played more often in the years to come.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig - Dust Level: 1 year, 1 month, 6 days - This remains a favorite of mine and my wife's. It's still one of the few games that I bothered to get a Broken Token insert for, which is so nice for this game. We always play the expansion, but not many of the swan rooms happened to come out in our most recent play. It was a close one, but I managed to come out ahead when my wife forgot about the end game bonuses for the rooms that run out of tiles. Not to brag, but I'm pretty good at this game and I'm always up for a play.

Railways of the World - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 8 days - Broke out the base game Eastern US map for my monthly Railways demo at Spielbound, Omaha's board game cafe. We had five players and the big roomy map was a good fit. I had a dramatic come-from-behind win as, for the first time ever, I was able to connect Kansas City to New York and build the Western Link. I was super excited about that, as I've never even seen that done before. But I had just enough time and money to do it and it was the difference in the game.

As usual, I'm only reporting on games that have at least 5 years of dust on them.

Curling Table Game - 1 play
First Published 2008

This dexterity game is a favorite of Joe Huber's, and all three of my plays have been with his copy. Curling is an attractive topic for a game, since players can "throw" their stones down a board and try to get them into the "house". The problem I have with this game is that I can't really execute the shots that I have in mind very well, which takes a lot of the fun out of it. But it's only a 5 minute game, so I'd be foolish to complain about playing it once every 8 years!

FITS - 1 play

I was somewhat surprised to see that it had been 8 years since I played this. I learned it at the Gathering of Friends in 2010 and played it 4 times there, and I think played it once more in July of that year. It's a reasonably well designed game of this type, though my fellow players often seemed to be more frustrated with it than I was. Michael selected it just this past Monday and we played it once again. I wouldn't mind playing it more, but someone else will have to suggest it -- it's a game that doesn't even occur to me to suggest.

You can see from my ratings why I don't play these games more often.

I tried getting this out a couple years back but couldn't get my opponent past the playing around stage. This time I got a sessions in with multiple games each time. I still quite enjoy this game as a very unique area control dexterity. It definitely draws a crowd as people try to figure out what's going on.

I believe this was my most played game one year. I brought it back to work after a few years and put it on the coffee table. It got far more plays from people not just myself. People seemed to quite enjoy and I did as well though I think it's a game best brought out in spurts rather than a regular in the rotation.

Magical Athlete - 1 play

I made it almost two years. Last time I played it I felt like I was good for a while. Two years probably wasn't "a while" enough. In fairness, it's a fine game for what it is, but one people need to be in the mood for embracing... I just wasn't in the mood.

This month my UnDusted games contain both some favorites and some games that I don't really enjoy. The favorites are Indonesia, Antiquity and Village. Such awesome games! On the other end of the scale, I'm not really a fan of either Catan or Caverna. However I played them within the past month and had fun with my most recent plays.

Not played for a while, as my son has had an irrational dislike of it: this time around we enjoyed it as it was meant to be played and are hoping to get it played at his birthday party soon. I really enjoy it.

König von Siam - 1 play

My annual (along with TKiD) play of this great design: tight, tense, absolutely silent because of the thinking (so much so, even the other tables on the game group commented on it!). Love it and The King is Dead, too.

Great play-with-the-kids game and I got hammered as my son's actual working memory got him about three quarters of the items. I still like the hidden labyrinth mechanic, even though I'm rubbish at it. James loves it.

My son was interested in this, as he'd seen us playing PLS2 over the last few months, so we played a vanilla game: it's still a great design and, no doubt, there's a 10 Year-iversary edition in the offing.

Die Siedler von Catan - 1 play
First Published 1995
1 year, 4 months, 18 days
Current Rating -  9

One of the few games I can say "I was there" about: I was there in '95 when the first copies hit these shores and played it... and loved it. My 8yo son has outgrown Catan Junior (thank goodness) and so we're onto two player games of this, which is conflict-light given the size of the island. The dice absolutely hated him: hope that hasn't put him off.

Santorini - 1 play

I didn't really take to this and a year's break might have been a good idea... I still didn't take to it and very quickly let an advantage slip against my son and he made the most of it for the win. Not such a fan of it as others are.

I would not play it without the townsfolk board. Ever. It mitigates a lot of the luckfest it would otherwise be. With that one, I like it, at least 2p. It was fast an fun, but it's rather unforgiving. I made two bad moves and that basically bowled me out of the competition.

Broke out one of the expansions that arrived earlier this year (Hall of Heroes). I already enjoyed the game the first time, but the expansion (haven't tried the second one, yet) added some neat things like mead to up your fighting strength and quests you can do to get bonuses and VP, which makes the game more diverse without clogging it up. Great game!

Late night, light card game outing with a friend who was over to visit. The starting decks are a mixed bag, some are decent, others are just badly built. Have to do some deckbuilding on my own before playing again. I still like the premise of this game and it plays fast. It's not the most exciting game out there, but for a light, quick game it's not a bad choice.

I dusted off 3 games this month.

Takenoko - 3 years 5 months

I played this with a couple at Gen Con, in the Pick Up and Play Library.

Blood Rage - 1 year 5 months

I also played this at the Gen Con Pick Up and Play Library. I'm not as enamored with this as most of the rest of BGG seems to be.

Ethnos - 1 year 2 months

Played with a couple my friends (at the Gen Con Pick Up and Play Library).

ASiE is one of my absolute favorites. I remember it being a real bear to teach, so it has gotten pretty dusty, but when I got it out this time, I found it much easier to get to the table, both in terms of the rules and in terms of teaching them. It helps that I've played a bunch of other Martin Wallace games that use similar mechanisms. This was the first play of the game that saw zombies get spread all over the table. I protected my agents by turning them into vampires. Hilarious!

I'm a little ashamed that this got so dusty -- I really like the game and wanted to play it more. I even put it on my 10-for-10 for the year, so I was getting pretty nervous that it was going to be my fail point in that endeavor. But then my wife and I got going on it and we played the whole Night of the Zealot campaign, and then we played the first four scenarios of The Dunwich Legacy. Here's hoping we keep the momentum rolling!

Really sad that my favorite required undusting. It's long, complex and pretty mean so it has a more limited audience, but I really need to get this masterpiece played more often.

Not a whole lot of games, but a great one from Knizia going out.

THROUGH THE DESERT - dust level: 3 years and 7 months. I traded for in a MT, and although it stayed as a ignored option for a while, it had a chance and, as expected, everyone liked.

PATHFINDER: RISE OF THE RUNELORDS - dust level: 2 years and 11 months. We started a new campaign from scratch, which might prove not to be a wise move, since the first scenarios are rather dull

ZOMBIE DICE - dust level: 1 year and 10 months. Playing with the cousins, and they liked, so I expect this one to be around more often

FIVE TRIBES - dust level: 1 year and 1 month. An awfully weird play, with one player giving huge plays for the one playing next. Coupled with some tremendous AP while using the Djinn that adds 3 meeples to the board, and we had a recipe for a bad play.

That was it! Regards,

Played this last night. Last game of the night. And here it is on my dusty list. Somebody pulled it out. We played it. Didn't remember it well enough to know if I liked it. But then after playing it, I'm still not sure.

The hype for the new (renamed) Kickstarter edition of this game got me nostalgic for the "good old days" of 2009 when I played Brass with my co-workers/regular gaming group. That group has long since dispersed and, with it, the regular chance to play heavy economic games.

My wife and I did play Brass a couple times using the two-player map and variant posted on BGG, but it wasn't the same as with four. So it sat for seven years until we dusted it off and played it again (twice) using the two-player variant. It's not a bad way to refresh oneself with the rules, but still not nearly as interesting as with four.

Playing it did confirm that I'm good with my edition and don't need the new one; nor am I interested in the spin-off Brass: Birmingham.

1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties - 1 play

So when I do get a chance to play heavy, multiplayer economic games, they are almost always 18xx. This month it was 1862: Railway Mania in the Eastern Counties. 1862 is a game that plays so differently to most 18xx that when we do get around to playing it, I invariably play it very badly. It was no different this time when I'm pretty sure I put myself out of contention quite early.

I definitely have an unhealthy love/hate relationship with this game. I play it, it hurts me and I obsess about playing more.

Looks like I've managed to play 5 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Snow Tails -- (1 this month; 6 plays 6+ years ago) _6⅔_
(images by JayB & garyjames)

It's cute and clever and quite delightful. And most of the reason I've not played for a while is that I no longer own my copy. (I found that, when I wanted a race game, I was reaching for Powerboats first.)

And despite quite enjoying this play, I still don't think I need to reacquire a copy.

Go -- (1 this month; hundreds of plays, all 5+ years ago) __
(images by ManCorte & bluestarfish)

This is a truly awesome game, and I'm not doing it justice by playing infrequently. My loss, I think.

Das letzte Paradies -- (1 this month; 3 plays 32 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by travistdale & vertigo2192)

This is a cool thing; and yet, I've still not enough practice with it to play well. So it's in that interesting limbo where I can (dimly) see some of the potential, but can't quite reach it. My rating could well increase if I could put together a crew that could play well (and, I guess, have sufficient competence to join them!)

Concordia: Salsa -- (2 this month; 2 plays 30 months ago) _7⅔_
(images by bhudson1972 & henk.rolleman)

We'd been a bit out of practice with Concordia for a while, and so had limited ourselves to the base game (or a few of the simpler expansion maps.) Having played a bit more recently, we were happy to re-introduce Salsa: and it was cool.

Though I think I need to remind myself to "stick with the plan" a bit more when it's in play; I find the Forum cards just cool enough to tempt me to diversion, and likely to the detriment of my game performance.

シンデレラが多すぎる Shinderera ga ō sugiru 'Too Many Cinderellas' -- (1 this month; 23 plays 25 months ago) _7⅓_
(both images by Mizukage)

It's short and charming; and I was delighted to have it back in play. I find the interlocking logical constraints to be quite amusing; and have fun watching others navigate them.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

I also brought out Battle Line, which hadn't seen the light of day for quite a while either. My wife beat me in both, lol.

These are both awesome 2 player games that I am very pleased to have in my collection.

A handful of dusty plays for me but nothing too dusty. The top two games are games that are on my trade pile anyway, so I don't really mind them getting dusty, and nothing else had more than 15 months of dust, which is good.

Niagara – Dust Level 20 months

This game wins lots of points for novelty, but doesn’t have a huge amount of replay to back it up, so has started to come out less and less often nowadays. Fun for an occasional play, and certainly very different from many of the games we own.

Seasons – Dust Level 18 months

I’ve pretty much lost interest in this nowadays, as every play feels very samey, and I’ve learnt to hate/dread certain cards being played as they make the game less fun for everyone else. Will happily trade this one on when I can!

Escape from the Hidden Castle – Dust Level 15 months

An older game that used to be a general favourite for end of evening game when we had a large group, despite being really a children’s game, but since the arrival of 7 Wonders it largely gathers dust on the shelf, coming out once a year just to remind us of its existence.

Pick Picknic – Dust Level 15 months

A sign that the children are growing up, as this used to be one of their favourites, as well as a filler adults would sometimes pull out, but now it’s not come out with either group for over a year, and has only had the odd play in the years before that too!

Winner's Circle – Dust Level 14 months

I was surprised to see this one hit the list, as although it’s never been a huge favourite, it usually comes out fairly regularly as it’s good to play with grandparents, and the children quite enjoy it.

Gnadenlos! – Dust Level 13 months

Only just hit the list, and the first time it has for this older game. Being best with just 4 has hurt it recently, as more of our gaming time has been with other player counts, rather than the majority being with 4. A fun short filler but with a high degree of luck!

Pulled it out my Legendary set (I have most of the expansions plus the base game) for the first time in over a year and a half. Wanted something light and easy to play as my wife was reaching the end of her pregnancy and who knew when we would be making that dash to the hospital.

I did a series of matches consisting of 5 games against Thanos with different teams.

Team One: Survivor Team(I am putting them in spoiler mode for anyone who has not seen Infinity War yet).

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Thor
Black Widow
Iron Man
Captain America
Rocket Raccoon

They didn't fare so well going 1-4

My 2nd team I called the Battle of Titian Team

Spider-Man
Dr. Strange
Iron Man
Starlord
Drax

They did much better scoring 4-1

I now finishing with my 3rd team my Marvel favorites

Spider-Man
Wolverine
Nightcrawler
Daredevil
Rocket Raccoon

So far they are 0-3 but two games have been maddeningly close angry

I remember enjoying my first 2 playso f this last year. They were in quick succession and made me track down the expansion as soon as I could. Haven't been able to get the expansion to the table yet, but hopefully it will by the end of the year since I'm putting this in my bag almost every game night.

This used to be my go to filler game at the beginning or end of the night. I love how different it plays with each player count and, thusly, how many penguins you have to work with. Can be very cutthroat with the right group.
