"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Seven Sisters - Dust Level: 3 years, 3 months, 23 days - This is one of my go-to obscure games to show people, but evidently I haven't done so in a while. It's still one of the most unique area control games I've ever come across. Unfortunately, it's better known for its legendarily bad art than anything else. Granted, there's good reason for that, but there really is more to this game.

Lost Cities: The Board Game - Dust Level: 2 years, 8 months, 19 days - I'm in the minority on this one, but I think the board game iteration of Lost Cities is far superior than the card game version. I just find the addition of the tokens and tracks a really engaging element. Showed this to my father-in-law because Knizia games have been going over very well with him, and this one did as well.

Abyss - Dust Level: 1 year, 9 months, 9 days - I played this a lot when it first came out but then it got overshadowed by Cathala's other hit that year, Five Tribes, and I've played it only infrequently ever since. I still like the game and my wife and I have a couple of friends who really enjoy the game. In fact, the last time we played it over a year ago was with them. And then they requested to play it again recently. I'm still not sure what to make of the expansion, which seems to upset the tight scoring in some ways but adds a lot of interesting elements in other ways. I continue to use it for now and it worked out really great this last play because we never found any of the loot locations.

Tumblin-Dice - Dust Level: 1 year, 4 months, 8 days - Shocked this got dusty. This is one of the games I always bring to non-board game events to showcase to passerbys. I must not have gotten any games of it in myself the last few times I brought it for people to play, though. This last event was a family night at the Union Pacific museum in Council Bluffs. I had a table on behalf of the local board game cafe demoing games for people. Tumblin' Dice was a good fit for the event because it can be played so quickly and has great table presence.

Islebound - Dust Level: 1 year, 3 months, 6 days - Played this a few times before, but got my own copy this month and got it to the table with my wife right away. We had a great time with it and she won a close one after a pivotal attack of mine failed. Between the success of this and Above and Below in the same month, she's become an instant Red Raven fan.

Thurn and Taxis - Dust Level: 1 year, 1 month, 8 days - I have a physical copy of this but usually play it online at Yucata. It's been a long time since I've won a game of it, but I finally pulled one out with the Princess Messenger module that also put me over the top to level up to the Mayor rank on Yucata.

To Court the King - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 2 days - I used to own a copy of this but traded it away because it was redundant with the superior Favor of the Pharaoh in my collection. I play it at Yucata and this is another one I hadn't won in a long time but did this time. I only won, though, because my opponent was having even worse rolls than I was.

This year, I made a list of games to try to undust. Mr. Jack and Chrononauts were on it.

Several of these were played at a gathering I attended that had a few tournaments, a little open gaming, and a bunch of stuff not related to gaming. Usually an annual event, we hadn't done it in four years. Notably, the last time I played Hearts was the last time we had this event. I also played Euchre there, which I don't get to do often enough.

The last time I played Math Fluxx was three years before it came out. It seems pretty similar to what I remember of the prototype.

Dungeon Petz x1
First Published 2011
5 years, 10 months
Current Rating -  6

My first impressions of Dungeon Petz were really good. I particularly enjoyed the puzzle of assigning and then satisfying every pets needs. But the more I played, the less I was enamoured with the game as I found it a bit too random and forward planning was limited to looking only a couple turns ahead. My wife, however, enjoys it more than me and, in fact, when we played it five years and ten months ago, it was at her request. And it was also her request this month that got it out of the dust. We'll see if it takes another five years to get it to the table.

Roll for the Galaxy x5
First Published 2014
3 years, 3 months
Current Rating -  7

I was just a bit surprised that three years have already passed since my wife and I last played Roll for the Galaxy. This month, it got a bit of a revival with five plays; one of them was even a three-player to round out an evening of gaming.

Overall, Roll for the Galaxy is an okay game. But like Dungeon Petz, it's too tactical for me to really enjoy. It's also too random and some lucky tile draws can lead to a runaway winner; as in the case of my wife getting the planet that gives 2 credits more for yellow dice used in the Stock action followed by getting three yellow planet tiles from the draw bag in short order. Unlike Dungeon Petz, the game is fairly quick so I'm a bit more accepting of it's randomness.

The Tool's not working for me, so less info in the formatting. Both games brought out of the dust (well, cellar) for my son's eighth birthday party for which he invited some friends over to play games.

Quackshot - 1 play - Wacky kids dexterity game

19 months dusty. One of two motorised kids games and this one hasn't got as much 'grown-up' appeal as the one below: a central carousel spins around and you use duck archers to shoot farmyard animals off of it. Wobbly farmers block you as you try and knock your animals off first. It truly is wacky fun and the kids played it for a good 30 minutes, with 'arrows' and shrieks constantly in the air. One of my archers is broken, which is a shame, but understandable after 6/7 years.

Loopin' Louie - 1 play - Wackier kids dexterity game

17 months dusty. This one is just as much fun for grown-ups (especially a little drunk), and the kids played this for 40 minutes or more: using a paddle you deflect Louie's rotating airplane away from your chickens and into others' chickens. Easy variants are to use your 'wrong' hand as a handicap, or if there are two of you, use two adjacent paddles. Good fun.

I have had TrainSport: Austria sitting on my shelves for years and never even read the rules. I finally got round to it and we found the crayons very crumbly. I suppose it was okay ut definitely not my favourite.

I also taught my youngest Backgammon. It's years since I played it with anybody. I am very glad she is learning to play backgammon.

Played with my daughter, who absolutely crushed me.

Heroes Wanted dust level 3 years

Played at my friend's house on game day. I don't think this game is for me.

Fairy Tale dust level 2 years 5 months

I played this literally 40 times back in 2012

Stone Age dust level 1 year 8 months

Gave away my copy to a friend a couple of years ago, and we've drifted apart. Acquired a cheap copy at Gen Con, so I don't expect it will make this list again.

I tried to get the kids into Carcassonne, but first try was underwhelming. I think I'm going to try again together with the whole family, and see if it works better in that context.

Schotten Totten - 1 play

Tried to play again with the wife, but she still does not enjoy it. It did not help that she got a rule wrong (can't place cards once the stone is removed), causing her to lose. Still there may be potential in the future. This game was closer than the previous and the games seems more interesting than before.

I hadn't played this since it had just come out whereas the two I played against had. They weren't experts by far but enough to show me how to do it. I had wished to play this for a long time so it was great to finally do play it. Hopefully, I won't wait more than two years till I play it again. Lovely game that I'm not sure needs an expansion really.

My tenth play but the first for 20 months. Nobody really wants to play this anymore but fortunately I have a group of mostly non-gamers and non-experienced gamers at work where I bring the games so I can inflict great classics on them with success.

4 plays against my girlfriend this month with the craftsman angst variant for two players - or rather the el jefe angst variant in the great Heiko Günther redraw that we use. Next up is trying out some of the new buildings but we haven't felt the need so far.

Also a game I hadn't played since shortly after its release and all back then were at more than 2. We felt like playing it again and thought we might as well try it at two. It couldn't get any worse than Charterstone at least. It was actually enjoyable without being great but what do you expect from an average game. Still, I can see us playing it this way once in a while in the future too.

Push It - 3 plays

I was never very good at this so that's perhaps why it had gathered a bit more dust than one would expect. 3 plays this months against two different opponents in two different pubs was fun.

Reef Encounter - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 4 months, 19 days

When I first tried this 6 or 7 years ago against three friends I didn't like it at all. Geekbuddies love it so I was convinced to give it another try two years ago and this time I liked it much better even though it was only at two. When back on the shelf it didn't get pulled out again till now. Actually it's still standing in the dust because I played it online against a couple of GCL mates. Playing something as interactive like this online across different time zones really doesn't get the best out of the game so I'm not sure I'd want to play it that way again - but I'd love to play it face to face soon.

Virgin Queen - 1 play
First Published

And now for the big one. I was ill last time my group played Virgin Queen so it's lasted longer than I wanted since my last play. Also, we had played Here I Stand in the meantime so I haven't been out of action entirely. This was a particularly great 5 player game with lots of warring and not that much negotiatiating as it is sometimes. All 5 players were close at the end and 4 of them were within mm of a victory at one stage of the 6 turns we played.

This doesn’t really count, because the previous time I played Brass, it was good ol’ ugly Brass. My recent play was the fancy new shiny Lancaster with poker chips!
It’s a different beast that feels familiar. I kinda liked the old Brass and now I regret that I didn’t join the Kickstarter. Fortunately all of my gamer friends in town did. Marvelous game and the new 2p-rules seem to work really well.

Given how much I used to play this, it is sad to think that it has been 7 years since my last game... It's a really fun hidden teams game for a large group of players.

I'd neglected to log this when I first did my entry... I taught this to my kids 5 & 8. They had fun with it, and we might play it again.

Looks like I've only managed to play a single title that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

The King Is Dead -- (1 this month; 2 plays 34 months ago) _7⅔_
(both images by Dunc)

(I've also played its ancestor König von Siam a couple times - but not in the last three years.)

This is extremely clever. And also not very long in play nor particularly difficult to explain. And I like it.

So why is it so hard to get to the table?

I'm not sure. Some of it, I think, is that it also feels completely unforgiving. Which is probably true; but one might hope for a bit more bravery from one's colleagues.

Thanks (again) to son #2 for the play.

Only one dusty game this month. I was surprised that it was almost 2 years since we last played this. We both like it and it plays fast and fun. Might be something for the lunch group, as well.

Ok, technically not "dusted off" since we play this annually as a Family at GrandCon every year. I had a good winning streak going, and them my wife snatched away my king frog crown!!!

Once upon a time, Uwe Rosenberg was known for brilliant-yet-quirky cardgames. After Bohnanza, he came up with this memory/luck-pushing mash-up with a pizza-making theme. Utterly brilliant, but works not so well with five. Which I may have known at some point, but it was really a long time since my last play.

Excellent filler game for larger groups, which is exactly what we were looking for last Saturday. Lately this has been more of a play-with-the-family game, but my gaming buddies like it too.

This is an awfully big box to get out and set up and play with, but is it ever a blast (pun intended)! It is a real joy to have a huge set to play with, including more counters and maps than I would ever know what to do with.

The first couple of times I played this, I was intrigued but a bit skeptical. After logging these two plays, though, I realized that I have now played LoD more than any other COIN! It must have grown on me quite a bit. I love games that reward repeated plays like this one.

Only a handful of dusty games this month, and only one with more than 14 months of dust, which isn't bad at all. None of them are ones I feel I should move on from lack of play though - I think they're all unique enough to keep their spots in our collection, despite them hitting this list.

Filthy Rich – Dust Level 16 months

This game has had 146 recorded plays by me, so I’m impressed that it has finally stopped being played so much that it hits the dusty list. Partly this is the advent of so many better 2 player games; and partly that the gamer that we used to play it with 3 player regularly now is a very rare visitor. I really hope it isn’t another 16 months before the 147th play!!

Der dreizehnte Holzwurm – Dust Level 14 months

A much older card game, that rarely comes out nowadays just because of its age and the fact that it is unfamiliar to most gamers nowadays, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun when it does come out. I do need to try and table it more often though, because right now I do find that I’m winning most games comfortably, just because I’m the only one who knows how to play it!

Powerboats – Dust Level 14 months

This race game is quite fun, but when it’s competing with Ave Caesar and Breaking Away, it loses out by comparison, so only ever seems to played about once a year. I’ll keep it a bit longer though, as it is rather different than most race games, so fun to play.

Compatibility – Dust Level 13 months

This tends to be a game we play about every year, as there are other party games nowadays that do the job better – Knowing Me Knowing You in particular having mostly taken this one’s spot – but it’s still fun occasionally. Just made it over the dusty year limit this year, but no plans to remove from the collection anytime soon.

Crappy Birthday – Dust Level 13 months

Given how much this was played in 2017 I’m amazed it has got dusty, but a combination of children growing up and finding other alternatives to play with friends/relatives, and it slipping behind GiftTrap on the shelf and being hidden, has meant it just made it to the dusty list this month!

Nice little game that I have enjoyed a lot over the years since I've had it.
And it's about cats! What's there not to like?!

I was actually planning to have played it before this time this year, but... it just never happened.

5 Dusty Titles for me:

Strasbourg - 1 play
First Published 2011

I really would like to play this one again soon. Each player in our game was filled with "I did the wrong thing" angst throughout. The bidding mechanic is rather unique and I like the way you can cycle cards back into your deck by not getting a benefit if you bid. A good mix of strategy and tactics.

A crunchy 45 minute game experience. Played with the fortifications which boosted scoring. Very colorful version of the game and one I will push for more often.

A classic card game. 7 year old niece requested it, so I played. Will look to introduce her to other card games her family owns or ones I can give as a gift.

TransAmerica - 1 play

A great family game - and one I played with family members. No vexation expansion in this one.

Fabled Fruit - 2 plays

Will we finish the fable? Based on our pace of 13-14 months between game sessions and the fact that we have 2 more large stacks of cards to explore, I suspect not. I like the concept, but the 2nd session fell flatter for some reason. Were we not so thirsty?

I can't get the query to work after repeated attempts.

Big City for the first time since I started recording plays (early 2000's). Enjoyed it and looking forward to last play. It didn't have that "dated" feel that some Euros from that era do.

The Civil War another without an earlier recorded play. Suspect this will be in the dust when I am next talked into playing it.
