"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

AquaSphere - Dust Level: 2 years, 0 months, 27 days - This was part of the lineup of my Feld Friday Marathon at Nuke-Con. I didn't realize it had been so long for this one! Seems like I always have to refamiliarize myself with this one before plays. It's also a tough one to teach because there is so much going on. It's definitely one that takes a play or two to figure out a strategy. As a result, I kind of ran away with the win against the players I was teaching this time. But everything was going my way. I had a nice black crystal engine going and I always had one available when it came time to pass a point threshold.

Arkham Horror - Dust Level: 1 year, 11 months, 28 days - This is one of the annual Halloween games my wife and I play annually, but it looks like we missed it last October. Funny that; I could have sworn we played it last year. Anyway, I tried out my new copy of Kingsport Horror I got as an add-on in a trade earlier in the year. New monsters and characters are always welcome. We played against Cthugha this time, woke him up, and lost pretty handily in final combat when we couldn't overcome his physical resistance nearly enough.

Ticket to Ride: Europe - Dust Level: 1 year, 7 months, 17 days - This is probably my least played Ticket to Ride map. The stations are too nice and there aren't enough long routes on the Europe board for my play style. I got it out of the dust for a tournament and finished third and last in the two games I played. It was worth it to get the cool new translucent purple trains, though.

Bora Bora - Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 0 days - Brought this out of the dust as part of the lineup for my Feld Friday Marathon at Nuke-Con too. This one always lasts longer than I plan for. Despite only being six rounds long, it seems to unfold at a more leisurely pace than many of Feld's other titles. It's so good, though. The dice-placement choices are always agonizingly satisfying.

Three "out of the dust" games for me this month, which I think might be a personal record.

Carson City - 1 play
First Published 2009
5 years, 6 months
Current Rating -  7

My wife and I hadn't played this one in over five years and it took a friend to suggest it. Of course, it's a much better game with more players, so it's not that surprising that we haven't played it just the two of us. And, honestly, even with three, it's not as tight as it could be (but maybe we should have used the river side to make it tighter).

In spite of the openness of the play and the few interactions we had, I did enjoy dusting Carson City off. Although, there's something about adding up the income each turn that puts me off. While it's something I'm completely used to doing with an 18xx game, it's just not the norm in a mid-weight Euro.

Mombasa - 3 plays
First Published 2015
2 years, 6 months
Current Rating -  8

Mombasa is one of those games that I always gaze at on my shelf, but pass over because it'd just take too long to relearn and then re-teach. But today, I sat down and watched a teaching video to refresh myself on it.

My wife and I'd last played it in April 2016, and even though that's over two years ago, she couldn't remember much about the game, so I retaught it from scratch. It made for a rather long game first game, we ended up playing it a couple times more after that.

I'm probably in the minority, but I way prefer Pfister's Mombasa to the more popular Great Western Trail.

1830: Railways & Robber Barons - 1 play
First Published 1986
1 year, 6 months
Current Rating -  8

Although I was a big fan of Avalon Hill games as a teen and in my twenties, by the time 1830 was published (1986), I was much more into miniature wargaming and gaming on my Commodore 64. Ironically, I did have a group to play it with had I got it at the time, a group that was more than comfortable with heavier games like Civilization and King Maker. Instead, it wasn't until three years ago, that I finally got to play it. And even that was about six years after I discovered 18xx. By the time I did play it, I was pretty sure 1830 would show it's age and I wouldn't enjoy it as much as some of the newer titles. Besides, I prefer the "engineering" aspect of 18xx more than the stock shenanigans.

Well, no, 1830 is a classic that can still hold it's own against the newer titles. And the stock manipulations are fine. In fact, they can lead to some of the most intense moments in 18xx. It's just too bad it only comes out now once every year or so.

I had just one item this month that was at least 5 years dusty.

1853 - 1 play
First Published 1989
5 years, 1 month, 8 days
Current Rating -  7

This is an unusual game in the 18xx family. It was designed by the originator of the 18xx concept, Francis Tresham, who is said to have been so affected by the shenanigans people came up with to win his second 18xx design, 1830, that he designed a game for the engineers and not for the financiers. It's a game in which nothing that happens during the stock round has any effect on the stock price, and failing to pay a dividend has no effect either unless there are shares in the bank pool.

I had played it back in 2013, but we didn't finish the game, and I wanted a chance to play it all the way through. Perhaps the most notable feature of the game happens right at the start, when the players must put in semi-secret bids to connect certain cities as a requirement for government approval to operate railroads. The British wanted to be able to move troops by railroad to different parts of British India as needed, and because railroad entrepreneurs promised to make this possible, they were allowed to proceed with their commercial ventures.

Another feature of the game is that a Director may contribute cash from their own holdings to help fund the purchase of a new train, even if the company already has a perfectly good train. This can often be a good decision, because the share price can move up 2, 3, 4, or even 5 spaces on the track if the company pays dividends that are twice, thrice, or up to 5 times the share price.

Trajan - 1 play
First Published 2011

Current Rating -  7

Here's a rare example of a game that I tried out with my daughter when it was a little beyond her. But she was only nine years old then. Accordingly, she had a negative attitude about it, but I convinced her to give it another try. After all, she now plays plenty of mid-to-heavy eurogames, like Terra Mystica, for instance. She did enjoy it this time. She focused on building, and did so well, but to the neglect of Trajan tiles and the Senate, so that I won by a solid margin. I too found it less complicated than I remembered it to have been, and I really liked the mancala action this time around.

Kemet - 1 play
First Published 2012
1 year, 2 months, 17 days
Current Rating -  8

I finally got Kemet around to my game group, so that we could play my first ever five-player session. It was a lot of fun. We used the black power tiles from Kemet: Ta-Seti and C3K: Creatures Crossover Cyclades/Kemet, which helped to keep the game from being too cutthroat with respect to availability of powers. (We didn't use the Path to Ta-Seti, though.) Although I was the only experienced player, I didn't win. I was in the second-place tie with the scores 11, 9, 9, 6, 6.

Alice Chess - 1 play
First Published 1953
1 year, 0 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  8

This game was played at Prp's suggestion--in lieu of Knightmare Chess (third edition). It really is an excellent chess variant, but this was a shockingly quick game. I gobbled up both her rooks quickly, and then closed in for an early checkmate: threatening her as-yet-unmoved king with a bishop, and covering all escape squares on the other board with my queen.

I always use the dustiest game as my game entry, which means the game I like least is probably going to be featured. That's not always true, but if I let a game go dusty for a long time, there's probably a reason.

It's not the worst game in the world. But when I found myself roped into this game, I braced myself. Ugh. I survived.

Agricola - 1 play

This was on my list of games to undust, so it's no accident it's here. I found a way to easily slaughter animals and my people lived off sheep most of the game. I don't feel like I play often enough to be good at it, but I did finish second of four. A more experienced player could've won with my setup, I'm confident. That's the problem I have with most games of this weight.

FUSE - 2 plays

This is just one of those random dusty games. I would play it more if it came out more. I like co-op games more than I dislike speed games, apparently.

Royal Palace - 1 play
First Published 2008

Current Rating -  7.4

Royal Palace is one of those games that sits on my shelves and doesn’t often figure in the 'what shall we play today' stakes. Little Fish the Elder suggested we try it and it was easy enough to remember how to play. It played pretty well, not overly notable or exciting, but a fair worker placement sort of game. I imagine I'll retain the game but its appearances on the table will be sporadic.

Machi Koro - 1 play
First Published 2012
1 year, 2 months, 6 days
Current Rating -  8.3

It’s a bit unfair to have Machi Koro as dusty abut as we usually play with one or the outer of the expansions that’s how the base game showed up here. These days I much prefer the expansions as the base game, while a great place to start, improved with the variability offered by the expansions.

We heard rumors of a terrifying spirit haunting the woods around this colonial town, so we traveled back to see if we could find out what was going on. It was a banshee! After a somewhat frustrating build up period, we managed to banish her from the town environs. Begone, vile spirit!

My 3rd play of Indonesia but the first one for a long time. It's still as good as I thought it was but probably longer than it should be had we been more experienced. The winner was 4-500 ahead of the rest of us who all three were within 23 points.

We played this with the kids, my brother and his wife... Strangely, my SIL had never played cluedo before! It was an odd game because my eldest accidentally let slip the 3 cards he had by inadvertently using all 3 in his first question. I was close to winning, but had the wrong murderer, so my brother won off the back of my penultimate question.. his wife would have won on her turn otherwise though.

The Tool's still not working for me, so less info in the formatting. Actively tried to undust some games this month, hence a fair few on the list...

Hare & Tortoise - 1 play - Mathy classic SdJ winner

5 years 2 months dusty. My son likes the Tales & Games series' take on the Hare and Tortoise story (I think it's pretty great, too), so was intrigued when he saw this old'un on the shelf (I have the 1984 version). He's 8 and completely failed to grasp the tactics of movement and strategy required to make it to the finish line. I like it, should try it again with a few grown-ups.

11 Nimmt - 1 play - Surprised I kept this, won't be now

4 years 9 months dusty. Well, the cards weren't dusty as they had been used to play THE GAME and then The Mind. I finally used them for playing 11 Nimmt again and it was not fun; the turn-to-turn play was dull and the game began to look like it'd go on forever, so we called it. This one's in the trade bin.

Viticulture - 3 plays - High rated oenophile worker placement

3 years 10 months dusty. Borrowed this to play with the wife on holiday and she liked the theme very much but only 'got' the necessary sequence - acquire, plant, harvest, make, sell - down by the end of the game. I found it good again, but not great. I really like the Grande meeple, though, -- that needs to be in all worker placement games!

Snow Tails - 2 plays - One of my favourite race games

3 years 1 month dusty. Very surprised this had remained on the shelf for so long: it's a simple but still at times mindmelting little equation to work out your movement, that will trip new players up at some point. I forgot the 'Formula De' turn order rule, so there were a lot of bonus movements going on, but that probably kept the game at an acceptable pace. The three new players enjoyed it enough to request a back-to-back play.

Evolution - 2 plays - Educational and a pretty decent game

1 year 11 months dusty. Bought at the time as a sneaky educational tool to help my son learn Mr Darwin's facts, a recent visit to his house brought out mention of this game and so we played it a couple of times. My son loved the game -- until he brought a carnivore into play and was forced to eat his own beloved herbivore, at which point there was a bit of a meltdown. Yes, I showed him an all herbivorous game first, but that was so dull. Those carnivores really add some meat to the gameplay.

Diamonds - 1 play - Fun trick-taker, don't expect skill to triumph in a the short run

1 year 4 months dusty. I was happy to play a 5p game of this, as I was brought up playing Bridge, Rummy and Whist with my family. I got some awful cards and, while shooting the moon can recover some semblance of competitiveness, one player did seem to be dealt all the 13s, 14s and 15s and romped to a comfortable victory. Two of us kept getting smacked by clubs, which reminded me how much I like the simple Thief expansion for the game.

Qwinto - 2 plays - A fun filler-length RnW

1 year 1 month dusty. Played two games on a ferry crossing: my wife prefers games where thinking is optional and decision space somewhat confined; plus the game is quick. I still think playing a lot of games back to back would become formulaic, but - especially since Twenty One came out - this pops up with enough time between to make it fresh again.

Through the Desert

Rating: 7.5
Total Number of Plays: Before I logged plays 30+
Dust Level: 14+ years

My copy is so old, the box lid reads "Durch Die Wuste" It is the German, first edition. This game used to be a family staple. Our family always called the game by its German name. We taught our oldest children how to play when they were five or six years old. My wife has been asking me, "Why do you get new games when we haven't played some the games we already have." One game she specifically mentioned, was "Through the Desert." I thought that was a good question. Our oldest daughter came in to visit us from Denver this week, so I thought now would be a great time to bring it out. We were a little rusty with the rules, but it all came back to us pretty quickly. The game played quickly. It was a great trip down memory lane. I plan break to break it out again when all the kids come home for Christmas. After our play, I adjusted my rating for it from a 7 to a 7.5

Cinque Terre

Rating: 7.5
Total Number of Plays: 11
Dust Level: 14 months ago

I enjoy pick up and deliver games, but unfortunately, many in my gaming group do not. So, this has been hard to get to the table. Finally brought it out at our gaming group this past month. Cinque Terre is essentially a gateway game, so everyone caught on very quickly. It was as good as I remember it being, but for my compadres, it was merely "ok." However, I did discover that there were one or two gamers who had been wanting to try it out, so they asked me to bring it back so they could give it a try.

Still a really slick co-op game but tends to get pushed to the side by newer games.

The rating for this is a bit skewed. With the expansion it is definitely up at a 7 or 8.

I am NOT proud of myself. Two years without playing this? I am ashamed! I played the second scenario of the base game with my buddy and we played wonderfully. We now have an objective: play one scenario per month. Should take us 3-4 years to catch up

Feldtober has away of bringing out some goodness. We've gotten to the point where we own so many of his games (and I'm sure we'll continue to add more) that some collect a little dust. Between rotating through our Feld games and playing our annual 10x10 list some games have to wait their turn...

La Isla (2014) - 2 plays
3 years, 9 months, 23 days
Current Rating -  6.8

I had borrowed my buddy's copy of La Isla last fall in hopes of taking some photos, updating my wife's and my Feld reviews for it after a few plays but we didn't get to it. There it sat on the bottom shelf, yep... collecting dust. I made it a priority to get it played this time around. Now to return it to my friend and thank him for letting us borrow it for so long.

AquaSphere(2014) - 1 play
2 years, 0 months, 2 days
Current Rating -  8.0

I still feel AquaSphere is under rated, or at least under appreciated. After I play a game a few times I begin to feel like I'm at least getting my arms around it. This one continues to baffle me as I try to puzzle through it for a win. My wife holds a 4-6 advantage and we both feel like we are so close to just breaking out when we are out of time and actions. It leaves me wanting more. Considering putting this on my 2019 10x10 Challenge list to play it more.

Macao(2009) - 2 plays
1 year, 5 months, 16 days
Current Rating -  8.3

Macao is a game of planning, coordinating, and mitigation that is a fun challenge to play from time to time. It is not my favorite Feld, but a solid game that needs to come out at least once every year or two for a couple of plays. Feldtober is always a good occasion to get it back out if it has been a while. It is a hotly contested game when it is just the two of us, my wife holds the slight advantage 6-7.

Bruges(2013) - 2 plays
1 year, 0 months, 5 days
Current Rating -  9.0

Bruges has finally convinced me that it is my favorite Feld title. We have played it quite a bit but had taken a break for a while. It was so good to get it back to the table. It is a Feld where my wife continues to hold the edge in our 2p games 20-26 with 1 tie.

meeple Keep playing...

The tool is acting weird again so no nice list.
I checked my plays and know for sure that it’s been a loooong time since I played The City.
It’s still a quick and cool game. What attracts me most is the fresh and bright illustrations by Klemens Franz. Thematically everything seems to connect well. It’s a simpler iteration of Race for the Galaxy with a different theme. A keeper!
