"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Concordia - Dust Level: 3 years, 7 months, 13 days - I've played some of the expansion maps on Boiteajeux more recently, but it's been awhile since I used the base game maps. But Concordia is one of those games I'd like to play more of, so after wrapping up my Railways of the World recurring monthly demo at the local board game cafe, I decided Concordia would be the next game I tackled in monthly recurring demo form. I hosted my first session this month and had eight players show up. Fortunately I had access to a couple of copies of the game. We played the big Imperium map to introduce everyone to (almost all the players were new to the game) and now we'll start playing through the others as play counts dictate. I'm really looking forward to exploring these other maps in the physical realm.

The Ravens of Thri Sahashri - Dust Level: 2 years, 0 months, 15 days - This remains one of the most unusual 2P-only games out there, but it's one of those games I always have to go over the rules again before playing. They're just not really intuitive. I'm glad I got it back to the table for this dusty play, though. It still appeals to my love of unique games, though I wouldn't be surprised if it got dusty again.

Cthulhu Gloom - Dust Level: 2 years, 0 months, 15 days - Looks like my wife and I didn't get this to the table during Halloween festivities last year. I think we played regular Gloom instead. But the Lovecraft theme on this one is amusing and works well. I like playing this with my wife more than other people because neither one of us care to get into the roleplaying or storytelling aspect of the game. We just like the funny cards.

Triassic Terror - Dust Level: 1 year, 8 months, 13 days - I didn't realize this was a dusty play when I taught a friend how to play after he picked up a copy at a Black Friday sale. It's still one of my favorite area control games and I one I continue to recommend to people looking for something a little different in the genre.

Okey Dokey - Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 19 days - I had a chance to add a copy of this, the stupidest-named game in all existence, to my collection for a few bucks from a local seller this month and got it to the table right away. My wife and father-in-law failed in a couple of plays at it, but I forgot about the rule that lets you discard cards to the bottom of the draw deck and draw replacement ones. Not sure if that would have made a difference this time, but it's an important rule I don't want to forget about in future plays.

Mall of Horror - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 20 days - This is one of my Halloween staples, but it got dusty because I didn't get around to it until November this year. That means it probably won't get dusty again next year. I played a couple of games this year with a couple my wife and I game with and this has become a regular tradition for them too. I masterfully manipulated things in the second game to win convincingly.

Hey, That's My Fish! - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 0 days - Hey, one month dusty exactly! I still like playing this one both online and with my physical copy and my oldest son has gotten to the age where he can be competitive with it, so I don't foresee it getting dusty again any time soon.

The first thing to know is that the time elapsed is just an estimate. It's probably been even longer than that. Honestly, I forgot I even still owned a copy. My memory is that I kinda hated this game. I don't really remember why; perhaps because my friends always wanted to play this when I really would have preferred Give Me the Brain!.

My friend N/A brought it for the night before Thanksgiving, and we played it, and....it was really rather fun. So now I'm glad I still have a copy.

Another surprise that it should get dusty, since it's a preferred abstract for my daughter. We've shifted more to chess variants this year, though. And these two plays were with a co-worker.

When I saw my wife arranging and rearranging her cards in little sets of two and she wasn't sighing and telling me to hurry up with my turn, because she was so absorbed in her own planning, I knew I had a winning game. A game that was even better with the two-player Ben-Luca house rule. Unfortunately, after about two dozen plays*, the two-player game started to feel stale and we put it away. It took just over five and a half years to dust it off, but we did on the last day of November, just in time to make this list.

And after five and a half years, the game was fresh for us again. So much so, it shouldn't take five and a half more years to get it to the table again.

*Getting into my h-index.

Looks like I've managed to play 12 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Nexus Ops -- (1 this month; 11 plays 8 years ago) _6⅔_
(images by muka & l10n0fjudah)

It's pretty cute; though also nearly completely tactical (which, as I've recently snarked elsewhere, isn't quite my preference.) I'm absolutely content to play occasionally, but this isn't something I'm often vying to get to the table.

Descent -- (1 this month; 18 plays 8 years ago) _7_
(images by Livinus & CEnzo)

This, on the other hand, is quite glorious. Muted a bit by the fact that it's also very fiddly and takes a load of time to set up.

And it's also in play because of the (significant) enthusiasm of my youngsters: the younger one is twice as old as the last time he'd played! Particularly fun this time is that my oldest was the overlord: that was my role when he was little.

11 nimmt! -- (2 this month; 5 plays 49 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by herbergsvatter & lacxox)

It's clever, and amusing, and fairly random (though perhaps not quite as random as 6 nimmt!.) But also sufficiently enjoyable to forgive it.

Small City -- (1 this month; 1 play 40 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by nabla & milenaguberinic)

The rules here didn't come quickly back to mind. But once it laboriously lurched back into motion, it was also quite engaging and clever. I'm still not convinced I'd play this in preference to other logistics games (I'd at least choose Neuland and Antiquity ahead of it, if not several other things too.) I'll still enjoy it when it does manage to get to the table.

Welcome to the Dungeon -- (1 this month; 20 plays 38 months ago) _7⅓_
(both images by zenxacred)

All my previous plays of this were the (illustrated) ダンジョンオブマンダム Danjon'obumandamu 'Dungeon of Mandom' version (which is the one I own.) This was with a friend's copy: and it's just sufficiently different that I'm a bit surprised it's the same "thing" in the BGG database.

Quite enjoyable, too.

Red7 -- (4 this month; 13 plays 37 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by W Eric Martin & punkin312)

I'd historically snarked that this (while permitting the occasional exercise of creativity) is occasionally extremely random. And the first of these games definitely demonstrated that principle: I was eliminated before I'd played any cards: zero decisions, and out! The other games were more engaging; but, again, the turns were of very mixed quality: some were rather forced, others gave an obvious(ish) choice; and occasionally there was the opportunity to do something cool. (And in the end, I prefer セブン with the moral equivalent of this deck.)

きょうあくなまもの Ki ~youakunamamono 'Terrible Monster' -- (1 this month; 6 plays 33 months ago) _7⅓_

I rather enjoy this: and that even if this wasn't the most rewarding instance of the game ever. (Well, particularly for my opponent! This one broke quite ridiculously for me in the final turn.) It's an impressive achievement for 16 cards.

For Sale -- (2 this month; 23 plays 28 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by Goodsound & BoardGameGeek)

A bit surprised it'd been so long since the last play. (And also amused by the differences in rules between my (illustrated) 1st Ed. Ravensburger copy and this play's 3rd Ed. Eagle-Gryphon.) An entirely tolerable blind-bidding game from my point of view: and that's a bit weird, since I don't generally like blind bidding.

Fresh Fish -- (2 this month; 13 plays 25 months ago) __
(images by Ogma & hinj)

Here's another blind-bidding game; and one of longer duration, too - which shouldn't work for me at all. But there's a huge bunch of context for each bid, (and, what's more, only the winning bid pays and there's a delightful tiebreaker: so it's not nearly the worst sort of blind-bidder.)

Add in the fact that I really enjoy the expropriation rules, and this is becomes a (rather idiosyncratic) favourite. I'm delighted when it gets to the table.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

Roll for the Galaxy is one of my favorite games to play with my wife. I think it captures the essence of Race for the Galaxy, which I love, while streamlining and simplifying the gameplay which my wife enjoys. Our gaming together has dramatically decreased after the birth of our son one year ago so it was nice to bring this one back to the table together.

Not a whole lot of dust, but at least some. It still feels great to let these marbles slide down the track, which is in all honesty the main feature of the game. Otherwise it's set collection with marbles. But it works, is fun and we got the expansion in Essen, which is why I got to undust this game this month. Don't think we'll ever play without the expansion again.

A lot of high-ranked games returned to the table last month: there's a reason they're still so playable.

Mississippi Queen - 13 years 1 month- Enjoying racing games at the moment

Having some fun with racing games at the moment: Powerships inspired me to undust this venerable title and it's still fun after all this time. The rule book is both bland functional but otherwise the production was fairly decent for the time it was published. Playing to pick up the passengers is essential for me, otherwise it's a bit plain. Also, a few more players helps with the chaos of shoving involved.

7 Wonders Duel - 2 years 6 months - Wow, 13 in the rankings

Good 2p game with interesting choices at almost every stage. Last time I played I lost to a Military victory as two 3-strength red cards revealed for my opponent with me having no chance to intervene; and... pretty much the same thing happened this time, only I won. Otherwise it was fairly even and still, despite the intricate set-up, good fun.

Pitchcar - 1 year 10 months - Great dexterity game, especially for kids

I feel kinda bad for having so much Pitchcar (and more on the way... The Loop!) and not playing it as often as it deserves, partly because set up and tear down can take a while. But, a family day game gave a great opportunity to undust this and - out for three hours - it received a lot of plays, all of them very much enjoyed. Yeah, I know I should like Crokinole more, but this is more my style.

Quantum - 1 year 8 months - No longer a 'hidden' gem

Rated highly now, which is good to see; I taught and played this with three players in under an hour, pretty much getting the rules right after a long lay-off. The fast/slow weak/powerful chiasmus-design was nice as ever and it was enjoyed by all, with me going from 3-4-4 down to a 5-4-4 win after an unusually aggressive period of play... go Dominance!

Fabled Fruit - 1 year 5 months - S'fine

Child brought this one out again and played as badly at age 8 as he did at age 7, bless: for some reason, all he wants to do is collect cards, without spending them. It's a fairly light set collection game with a morphing action/rule set as the games progress. It's fine.

Morels (2012)- 3 plays
2 years, 0 months, 22 days
Current Rating -  6.8

November was a busy month when we recorded more plays than any other month this year. Morels got some attention as it was one of our most competitive 2p games and had not been played in a while. I ended up winning 2 of our 3 plays so it drops on that list a little, but it renewed our memory of this quick playing, set collection game with a unique theme.

Kingdom Builder (2011) - 3 plays
1 year, 7 months, 27 days
Current Rating -  7

We dusted off Kingdom Builder for a best of three plays as well. My wife had mentioned during Feldtober that she would like to play this one again. I don't think she remembered a whole lot about it, but it was another game we enjoyed playing. It is simple, yet deep with its variable objectives, terrain, and location tiles/actions which makes you think how to optimize your game given the factors you have to work with. I hope this one gets back to the table before another two year pass.

6.0   Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game
2 plays (2 years, 3 months, 28 days)
My main solo game time is at my son's gymnastics gym, where I have roughly an hour to kill, so I often bring a solo game. This one was great, so I brought it another week. This is Ameritrash at its finest -- you can do everything right, and then the random cards and the punishing die just eats you alive. You can't go into Space Hulk: Death Angel thinking you'll win. You go in hoping "maybe this time I'll make it a bit farther." The second game I got down to one mob of enemies in the last location but I couldn't outlast them. SO CLOSE.

 6.0   Castle Panic
1 play (1 year, 3 months, 30 days)
My son and I got this out as part of our occasional "should we keep this" examination of games. Verdict -- yes, he'd like us to keep this. I like it, but I've never once found it tense, as we always win handily. I suspect it's because we actually cooperate, rather than competing for "best defender," or whatever.

 7.0   Bring Out Yer Dead
1 play (1 year, 7 months, 24 days)
A fun little area control game. Relatively easy to understand, hilarious theme. I usually put a lot of energy into getting cards, and this time I did not, which led me straight into third place.

N/A   Gravwell: Escape from the 9th Dimension
1 play (1 year, 1 month, 3 days)
A fun little "read your opponents" puzzle game. We played wrong, but we played wrong consistently for the whole game, so it was still fun.

 7.0   Epic Resort
2 plays (1 year, 7 months, 17 days)
I really like this deck building game. I'm not quite sure how to describe the mechanisms -- you use your cards to staff your resort, you recruit heroes and people to stay at your resorts. It's weird, but pretty fun. And the Jackie Davis art is wonderful.

I think I want to restrict it to at least 3 players so one player can judge disputes and I can enforce the rules more robustly. These three recent plays are the first ones since I started keeping records.

San Marco - 1 play -  8
First Published 2001

More than 5 years.

This is the first modern board game I ever bought. I remember it was during the 2005/2006 winter. I've played it at least 10 times within the next 2-3 years. But it'd been a while since my last game. I was really glad to play it again. We played it 4 players, and I start to understand why BGG people believe it is a 3-player game. There were a few unlucky drafts during the game. Even then, I really enjoyed my game.

Hello, folks! This month there aren`t many dusted games, but one of them was very heavy dust!

BETRAYAL AT THE HOUSE ON THE HILL - Dust level: 8 years and 3 months. -- The unbalance of many scenarios simply made this one fell off the rotation. It is getting some new attention now, so the next play shouldn`t take this long.

KING OF NEW YORK - Dust level: 2 years and 4 months. As I`m presenting a lot of games to my cousins, this one was chosen to return to my tables.

TICKET TO RIDE: NORDIC COUNTRIES - Dust level: 1 year and 3 months. TTR simply didn`t have all that great of pull, but ocassionally they show up.

That was it! Regards,

Ticket to Ride - India & Switzerland

2 years, 11 months, 12 days since the last play. I don't know why we don't play more TTR. It's quite good fun with 2 players on the India/Switzerland maps and we both always enjoy it. I suppose the issue is that I'd almost always rather play a medium weight game and I have a lot of games that play in about 45 to 60 minutes so it's hard for TTR to get a look in. Still, it has a permananent spot in the collection and it's a keeper. We played one game on the India map and one on the Switzerland map.

Still a great game to play with basically all "levels" (weight preference) of gamer.
Just make sure that you always play the (official) variant where the event for the next round is revealed, and, if you're 5+ players, where people choose their actions in sequence (possibly even choose this with 4 players; although there simultaneous action selection still works).

Some dust was gathered on the box. It came of the shelf because it was a backup game for a convention.
This game was hyped a lot by Tom Vasel but it gets a little boring and repetitive at the end.

Small Alex Randolph push your luck kids game that we play as a filler. First time playing the new version with the turtle theme that I much prefer. Other said it's a bit like a simplified Camel Up, which I have never played.

Dust Level: 1 Yr, 4 Mo (2 Plays) - But, prior to July 2017, it had been 5 years.

The Mystic Wood is what got me into the hobby, sort of. I got it as a kid around 1982. Then I found BGG when my mom brought a bunch of my old games to me (including this one) when she was cleaning out the attic. That was around 8 years ago. I decided to make my own expansions for this one and have been in the hobby since.

It still plays the same to me (fun) and I introduced it to a couple of people a few weeks ago (that is what got it out of the dust). Definitely going to try to get it out more often.

My son is 7.5 years old, and we've been playing a lot of games together lately. I decided on a whim to try this one, and he absolutely loves it. We've played 11 times in the past week, and worked up through the Omaha Beach scenario. FLGS had a black friday sale so i picked up the Terrain Pack as well. I already had the Eastern Front expansion, but have never played it. I think my collection is complete for this game. I already have almost everything Battlelore 1st Ed, so that would be next.

It's pretty funny listening to him explain to his mom "You see, it's hard to win as the Germans... "

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men
Dust level - 4-ish years
Only played this once before, and decided to try it out with my son since he loves superheroes. We have successfully played a few games of Quarriors!, so I thought this could be next. He was bored to tears. I don't have much of a collection, but I think i'll just dump it. I wasn't that interested in this one either.

This was one of our main go-to games with six players for several years. But then, we stopped having six players, so it kind of dropped off the radar. A friend had it on her "want to play" list, so I took it to game night and off came the dust.
