With the myriad sources of game news coming out of hundreds of publishers, large and small, it's difficult for even the informed gamer to know which releases to look forward to. This list is an attempt to aggregate what the BGG community as a whole is anticipating, omitting my own personal biases as much as I can.

This is a list of games sorted by what I call the "buzz score", that is, the number of wishlists the game is on minus the number of owners that game has. Most of the time, this will highlight games that are not yet released, but games may stay on the list after their release depending on how much people want them, and how quickly people have bought them. Obviously, games must be in the BGG database to be considered, but after that, there are no criteria beyond wishlists and owners.

I will post an updated version of this list about every two months. Here are some previous lists:

Sep/Oct 2018
Jul/Aug 2018
May/Jun 2018
Mar/Apr 2018
Jan/Feb 2018

There is also a subscription thread for this Geeklist series. If you wish to receive a notification when I post future versions of this list, go over to The Buzzlist: Anticipated Releases - Subscription Thread and subscribe.

Thanks to wildthayne, this list now has its own microbadge! Check it out here: Microbadge: The Buzzlist: Anticipated Releases fan

In On Mars, players represent small colonies that have been established on Mars. A larger consortium from Earth, the OMDE, has just arrived, and can aid these existing colonies who can help them meet their goals. Players build buildings, rovers, and ships to help them produce, trade, explore, and research. However, all of these actions will cost energy, so improving the energy infrastructure of the planet is very important. Players need to stockpile food, water, and shelter in order to increase their population.

Release Notes: Eagle-Gryphon Games will be running a Kickstarter for this game in April 2019.

One player takes on the role of Silver, who must give hints to the rest of the players regarding the whereabouts of the treasure, but can lie a limited number of times. The other players move around the island and can dig to find the treasure. Almost everything in the game uses dry-erase markers--player positions, dig radii, and clues are all drawn on the board. Additionally, players have mini-maps behind their screens that they can use for additional notes. Once Silver escapes after a certain number of turns, that player can move to the treasure and claim it to win for himself.

In Victorian Masterminds, players take on the role of evil geniuses running amok following the death of Sherlock Holmes. Each player spends the game trying to build his own unique contraption, each of which requires different materials and has different abilities. To do this, players send out their agents to different cities to collect its resources. Along the way, these players can perform additional nefarious tasks, such as destroy buildings, complete evil missions, or even sabotage the actions of other players. Agents are placed face-down to hide their specialty until resolved, which happens after three agents are placed in the same city. The game ends either when a player completes his contraption, or when all of the buildings are destroyed.

Unlike its predecessor, this game features a worker placement board on which players can acquire vegetables, which can be sowed in the players' fields. The game also features 36 different cards, many of which can combo together. Vegetables can be turned in during an exhibition phase to advance along the score track as much as a player can afford--but each subsequent step on the track requires more of these goods.

Like its predecessor Snowdonia, there's still a train track with places to build alongside, rubble to clear, and weather to deal with. However, the big difference in this game is the tea, which an be planted in estates along the track, and is worth points at the end (or delivered for more points, or made part of a contract for even more points). Or, the tea can be brewed into Chai, which can be consumed to make your actions or conversion rates better during the game.

In addition to the bird cards themselves being worth points, players can earn additional points through end-of-round public goals as well as end-game private bonus cards. While the gameplay itself is straightforward, the game includes 170 unique bird cards that will all interact with each other differently, providing a varied game experience.

[Previous List: Just Missed (852)]

UBOOT is a real-time cooperative game that is a realistic simulation of operating a German WW2 submarine. Players each take on a role—the captain, the first officer, the navigator, and the engineer, and each of these players controls four seamen in that department, each with his own specialties. Actually, it’s more like eight seamen—the game happens over two watches, and when the shifts change, the players flip over their player boards, making their pieces represent different men with different abilities. The game takes place on a large three-dimensional cardboard model of a submarine, and a mobile app operated by the first officer tracks the submarine’s location, allows the sub to interact with other vessels, and mediates events.

Release Notes: This game from Phalanx Games funded on Kickstarter in February. They expect to ship to backers in December 2018.

Pandemic: Fall of Rome
Design: Matt Leacock (Pandemic, Forbidden Desert), Paolo Mori (Ethnos, Libertalia)
Specs: 1-5 players, 45-60 minutes, Age 8+
Stats: 1380 wishlists, 532 owners

[Previous List: Just Missed (791)]

Pandemic: Fall of Rome is a cooperative game that uses the system pioneered in Pandemic. Players move their pawns around a map board representing cities in ancient Rome. Instead of treating disease cubes, however, they are fighting barbarian tribes. Players can't simply remove the barbarian cubes, however--they must be accompanied by legion tokens and then use dice-based combat to remove the barbarians. The five barbarian colors all have separate origin points, and spread along a certain path leading to Rome. If a card is drawn to place a barbarian in a city that doesn't have any yet, the barbarian is instead placed at the furthest point along that path. There are also event cards that can be made more powerful at the expense of advancing along the decline track. The object of the game is to create alliances with the five colors by discarding cards of similar colors, but the game can end if Rome is sacked (has an outbreak) or if the end of the decline track is reached.

Release Notes: This game from Z-Man Games was released in December, but may be out of stock in places.

Chronicles: Origins is a civilization game with two distinct types of games included. In the first type of game, players take on the role of leaders of a small stone age culture, guiding that culture through harsh environments and toward prosperity. After this stone age game has been played a number of times, the successful tribes created by these games can be combined into a bronze age game where the tribes have evolved into competing city-states. Naturally, only some of the city-states will survive this game, and those in turn can be used as the basis for a later-period Chronicles game that will be released at a later time. This successive journey through history is the basis for the designers' "Echo System", which will be featured in the Chronicles series of games.

Release Notes: This game from Artana will launch a kickstarter campaign at some point. Maybe.

Arydia is a cooperative open-world fantasy campaign game. Players take on the role of adventurers, exploring and interacting with the world and its inhabitants. As the campaign progresses, adventurers will gain new items, weapons, and skills. The game will have an incentive-based role-playing system that rewards players for engaging with storytelling elements without being intrusive. The game includes legacy elements, with game elements revealed once players accomplish certain tasks, but can easily be repackaged for future campaigns by other players.

Release Notes: This game from Far Off Games will probably be launching a Kickstarter campaign sometime in 2019.

The Forgotten Folk is an expansion to Caverna: The Cave Farmers that introduces player powers. Instead of the dwarves included in the base game, players can take on the role of one of eight other fantasy races such as the elves, dark elves, or trolls. In addition to giving that player abilities to use in-game, these races replace some of the base game room tiles with their own room tiles that can be bought by any player.

Like the designer’s previous games, Edge of Darkness is a “card-crafting” game in which players can create custom cards by inserting card portions printed on clear plastic cards into sleeves. In this game, players are trying to defend their cities from attacking monsters. To do this, players craft their cards, but these cards go into a common card pool and can be drafted by any player for use. However, the player who drafted the card must pay the original crafter to use actions on the card. Furthermore, the backs of the cards are the monsters that the players must fight. A cube tower is used to determine which monster fights which player and when that occurs.

Release Notes: This game from AEG successfully funded on Kickstarter in March. They expect to deliver to backers in June 2019.

Concordia Venus is a new stand-alone game based on the system presented in Concordia. This game introduces team play to the Concordia universe--players (in a 4- or 6-player game) break up into teams of two players, who sit opposite one another. When a card is played, both players on the team execute that action. Furthermore, while player pieces and resources are separate for each team member, money is shared among the teams. End-game points are calculated individually and added to form the team score. The game also introduces new personality cards, such as the Magister who lets a player reuse his previously-played card, and the Legatus who allows a team member to play a card that the other team member's request. This game is also available in expansion form for those who already own Concordia.

Release Notes: This game from PD-Verlag and Rio Grande Games will likely be available in early 2019.

In Museum, players are collecting artifact cards from various continents to display in their museums. Artifact cards are chosen from the central board, and can be played by discarding other artifact cards of equal combined cost. Once artifacts are in a player's discard pile, they can be played by other players as if they were in that player's hand, but the costs paid for that card go to that discard pile and the player earns a prestige. Instead of playing cards, players can spend a turn to take their discarded cards into hand. In addition to being worth the artifact's cost, sets can be created at the end of the game for additional points. Each row and column on the player's museum board can be scored for the cards' civilization (color) or domain (icon). Additionally, patron cards received at the beginning of the game can score additional points.

Release Notes: Holy Grail Games ran a successful Kickstarter project for this game. They expect to ship to backers in March 2019.

Barrage is a worker placement game in which players are trying to build hydroelectric infrastructure along a series of locks on the game board. Each turn, water will be released at the top of the game board and flow until they hit a dam. Once dammed, water can be routed via a conduit to a power station, allowing the power station's owner to generate energy. These dams, conduits, and power stations can be built using a player's equipment, and equipment used for building is not technically spend, but instead will be available for use again after five other structures are built. Players can take contracts that give rewards for generating certain amounts of energy. Points are earned by producing the most energy in a turn, meeting the energy threshold of a turn, and fulfilling a public objective tile.

Release Notes: Cranio Creations recently concluded a Kickstarter campaign for this game. They expect to ship to backers in April 2019.

In Black Angel, players represent AI's from various nations on a colony ship transporting the remains of humanity, in stasis, to a potential new habitable planet. Along the way, players have to deal with debris, fight off ravager aliens, and safely escort the ship to the new planet. This is a dice drafting game that uses some of the same mechanisms as the designers' previous game Troyes. Dice can be used to move your own ship, take technology tiles, destroy ravagers, or repair the main ship. Technology tiles are placed on your own 3x3 board, and rows or columns of tiles can be activated by placing cards of the tiles' color. While this is a competitive game, players will need to work together to overcome threats posed by the ravagers.

Release Notes: This game from Pearl Games is expected to be released at GenCon in August 2019.
