Welcome to
Kids on Board Games Geeklist
- January 2019

Hello all and welcome to the monthly "Kids on Board" games Geeklist.

Children need time to play alone and with other children without adult intervention, but playtime with adults is also important. As we all know board games are great for that. Not only do they teach children patience, problem solving, social skills and creativity amongst other things they can just be plain FUN for everyone.

This is a geeklist for anyone that plays any board games with children. Remember, they don't have to be your own children! (Just get permission first if they aren't!!) Hopefully it will inspire, inform, advise and open our eyes to the world of gaming with kids.

Feel free to post geeklist items, comment on other peoples items and generally mingle in the comments below. Also, consider spreading the word to anyone you feel may be interested.

Now, all you need to do is:

1. Play a board game with kid(s) within this month - it'd be extremely helpful if you can give the ages of the kids
2. Post a geeklist entry after you've played
3. Let us know how it plays
4. Provide feedback for others:
- hopefully one comment/word per child, maybe they can devise their own rating system?
- give your own overview, the adults perspective on how it was for you and how it seemed for them
5. Be nice, it's okay to disagree but it's not okay to be rude - we're all different but also the same
6. That's it!

Feel free to post photos but also feel free to avoid using full face pictures and avoid full names. You know, the usual internet safety rules.

This Month

Welcome to the first Kids on Boardgames geeklist for 2019! Wow, a new year already!

Thanks to Neil for hosting December's list! And thanks Ibbo for letting me loose once again on hosting this month's.

So, it being a new month, and a new year, let's hear about your wishes for 2019. What gaming-related activities are you hoping to do with your kids this month (or even just 'some point' this year)? Any games you're looking forward to picking up this month/year? Feel free to post them as items even if you haven't played them yet, just to start off the discussion!

And if you and/or your kids got any new games for Christmas, let us know if you get to play any with your kids.

And, as always, have fun!

This has been the one game my daughter has wanted more than any other for literally ages so my Dad bought it for her for christmas - the concept just really took her fancy for some reason - searching for an egg in envelopes in a kind of hide and seek way whilst trying to lay traps for others. There was literally one left for sale in the UK on ebay from some tiny little games shop so I said yes to my Dad anyway as pretty much last chance to get it new or at a reasonable price maybe. She was screaming for joy!

Not sure if we should play it or not yet though as don't know if too complicated - has anyone tried it with 8 yr olds or have any experience of it?

Either way for now or later, am looking forward to playing it at some point as certainly unique

Traded for this a few days before christmas and when it turned up, found out it was the full kickstarter version with all the cute ship models etc.

Am really not sure about this but we've stopped getting carcassonne out so much as a little tired of it after playing it since she was 5 so I figured this might just add enough extra plus sci fi theme and a little more competitive/direct conflict so might just suit us down to the ground. However, there's always the risk it might add too much complexity for this type of game/mood. Will give it a go later in the month so we'll see

Bought this for my mum as she adores elephants and this is the perfect type of game for her. My daughter wants to try it so will be playing it sometime in the next week so we'll see what my daughter thinks of it. Apparently my mum has already played it with my 7 yr old niece though and they were both quite taken with it.

Now, this is my one big wish for 2019! Likely a big stupid mistake as I never normally take risks with kickstarters or anything - especially ones with no real video of gameplay which was never really provided. I also normally have a price cap of paying £25 for any game and will trade for more expensive ones or wait until I'm lucky on ebay etc. However, this is the first game I've seen that stands a chance of being my holy grail game - which is a dungeon crawl type game to take me back to my childhood love of talisman and hero quest that has real adventure rather than roll and move and is competitive rather than co-op but not continual dice chucking to kill monsters over and over and over again.

I have my hopes seriously pinned on this game making my dreams come true and am hoping for it to arrive in the first half of this year so fingers crossed - truly. I suppose if it goes wrong, then at least I've learnt a lesson to never back anything like this again

My new years resolution is that I am not allowed to buy any games in 2019 at all under any circumstances. I have a backlog of games that I mostly traded for that I have delayed trying after playing with adults first as thought I needed to wait a bit for her to be able to cope and therefore enjoy properly. She really gets unhappy and negative about a game if she tries to play one outside her capabilities so always play safe rather than sorry. The one she's looking most forward to is bunny kingdom as she really wanted this game ages ago but I just thought the scoring was too much for her to handle alongside all the cards and options but she moans at me monthly and asks can we play it yet. Others include cutthroat caverns, santa cruz, dale of merchants, histrio, schotten totten and unfair.

There's a couple I know I also want including evolution, arboretum and archaeology: the new expedition as I really believe these are perfect for her and us but they are now on a strictly for trade basis only. We also have another few we need to give a fairer try to and play a few more times before giving them up so we have plenty to get on with until next Christmas as have now completed the overhaul of our games as she'd grown out of too many - for now at least anyway whistle

Anyway, that's pretty much all the prospective games for 2019 - sorry for all the entries but I just cannot sleep and love the theme for this month shake

Managed to get this onto the table for the first time in a while. The mummy + 5 year old team won, but it was a close thing as both my 7 year old and myself were closing in on our final tickets only to be stopped by someone running out of trains.

The kids love this game and it is a common suggestion for weekend game afternoons. It will be good when the 5 year old can play on her own (very close), and we can all play on an even footing.

One that does not get much action in our house as the kids love it but the parents not so much. Nevertheless it came out this afternoon and we all had fun playing it. The flick from our 5 year old is not so good so she gets rapidly frustrated, as long as some allowances are made she still has a good time.

Final game of our afternoon and it had to be something that gives a major advantage to players with little fingers rather than parents Both kids love the game and play alone, we even managed to get grandma to play (she really does not like boardgames) and she really enjoyed herself, finding that long fingernails give a childlike advantage, and winning on her first attempt.

This is on one child’s 5x5 list and so we had to play. She has been asking for days and I kept saying no because I didn’t want to play anymore than I had to. Lol. I don’t mind the game but playing with kids that don’t know at least 10% of the words on the cards, much less how to draw something, makes it a little painful to play.

But my 8yo loves it. She was quite distressed when I mentioned that I have it up for trade. Oops. She did get it as a play to win game at a con last year, but I would still like it to find a new home.

This fun little dexterity/planning/defying gravity game has been much loved here in the past few months. We find ourselves studying the board not only for the most strategic placements but also to look at the pictures we've made with our pieces, a la Tangrams. Today we had a man with a hat breathing fire onto a toad...

Ben (9) and I played this today. We lost! He played 2 characters (Swamper and Sawyer) and I played the other two. It was sort of a tough draw. The base was on an edge with the highlands adjacent, so movement out to get at the fires was tricky. We were doing ok, and had 7 scorched tiles, and one tile to clear (scorch of 3 with 2 fires on it!) Couldn't even get the 3 matches and it scorched for the loss.

He really was getting the hang of strategy and I think we're going to play round two after the Penn State game.

Edit: Redeemed! We won with 5 tiles scorched. It could have been less, but I got uncharacteristically daring. Should've stopped and just placed the firebreak. Oops. Sorry hotel. All the houses survived though!

My 12 yo struggles with executive function and planning, and the end stages of Evolution: The Beginning (where you hopefully have a tableau full of different species with different characteristics) is challenging for her to manage on her own. I'm hoping that with repeated plays this year, she will both grow to enjoy this one even more and strengthen those planning/programming skills.

Played this the other day with my 6 year old. He had no problems picking it up though he was obsessed with hoarding the camels. It's lots of fun especially since we are currently in India so he is getting to see some real Indian rupees.

I also have century spice road packed away, in a suitcase, which I am hoping to sit down and play with the kids at some point on this trip. I've been holding on to it for the better part of 9 months whistle.

Played with my 2 year old daughter on New Year's Day (lots of plays over Christmas too). She got it for her birthday last month, and she loves it! Older children can play it as a memory game, but she plays it as a matching game. She enjoys building the game boards, assigning a welly to each monster, then matching up the pairs.

It's a bit like Socken zocken, but the patterns are much more distinct.

I had tried other games with her such as First Orchard, but this was the first one she really understood.

Great for ages 2+.

We gave this collection of 10 games to our 2 year old as a Christmas present. It says it's for age 3+, but since she got to grips with Smelly Wellies, and the idea of a turn order, she has managed both games we've tried with her.

One was a shopping game, where you got to market with a shopping list, and buy different groceries depending on your dice roll. She loves helping with real-life food shopping, including keeping her own shopping list in a notebook, so she intuitively understood how to play.

The other was like Ludo, but with farm animals as pawns, and the dice only goes up to 3. Excellent for practising her counting.

I'm looking forward to trying the other games with her.

Played this a few times with my 5 year old. He loves the game, he even plays solo games, though playing with 4 is a chore because he gets bored with waiting his turn.

The components are nice and sturdy, but he's complaining that the fish don't have faces printed on.

We've had a pretty even win rate, depending if luck or memory are more important that game, but he's starting to get that he needs to remember all the tiles, not just where the building place is.

In the spirit of this month’s theme, my daughter and I are eagerly anticipating the release of this game in North America. My daughter absolutely loves animals, and I think that she will love the 3-demensional “planet” component here. Also, the tile-placing mechanism is one that goes over well in other games we play. This one hits on all cylinders for us.

I saw that Blue Orange Games tweeted that it should be available in the second quarter of this year in the U.S. Hopefully, that will include Canada, too, as it typically does...

I have this one on my 2019 10x10 challenge, and we got in a round today. I love this game because the 4yo doesn't need any help, and anyone can win (without me soft-pedaling). I took the purple car because the girls were quarrelling over it. 6yo took first place.

One of my absolute favorite games. Amazing depth of play in a very simple ruleset. Excellent for kids because it scales so well on a 3x3 board, or 4x4, or 5x5. Today the 9yo and I played several quick rounds at 3x3 to warm up, and then split two rounds at 5x5.

After a great day of family skiing nothing better than an epic 4p game of Zooloretto+Exotic+Aquaretto+some minor expansions. It is a little time consuming but still fun - 10 yo won, 7 yo lost, 2.5 yo fell asleep.

A 2-player game of this with my 10yo. It was a great battle throughout, but I managed to just get the win with 42 to 38.

Such a lovely, streamlined, simple-to-play game.
