"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Temporum - Dust Level: 4 years, 1 month, 6 days - It's far from Donald X's best game, but the theme is fun and the experience is a satisfying efficiency puzzle. It was never a part of my collection until Christmas, which is why it got dusty. I got a good deal on the base game and expansion on Black Friday, so I finally made a spot for it. I can see this getting more regular play in the near future. I'm thinking of introducing some house rules to solve a couple of minor issues I have with the game - getting automatically sucked onto the main time line when another player alters it is annoying sometimes and I think it would be fun to just players gallivant in the alternate zones as long as they want.

Eight-Minute Empire - Dust Level: 3 years, 6 months, 7 days - The app was on sale, so I dove into this game again. I think it wouldn't have gotten so dusty if it wasn't so abstract. But the set collection and area control balance is still satisfying and a fun challenge to tackle.

Penny Press - Dust Level: 3 years, 2 months, 26 days - Dusted this off to refresh my memory of how it works after BGA added it to their slate of games. It's a clean design and I'm inspired to try to get my physical copy to the table more often.

Pueblo - Dust Level: 2 years, 7 months, 8 days - This is one I had been thinking about a lot lately, so I brought it to one of my groups as an "Obscure Bryce Game" selection to get it played again. I picked the right group of people to play with because they raved about it afterwards and were sorely disappointed it's not an easily attainable game.

Grand Austria Hotel - Dust Level: 2 years, 0 months, 19 days - I'm very surprised this got dusty because I think this is Simone Luciani's best game. It remains one of the few games I went out of my way to upgrade the components for - strudel-meeples are awesome! I will try to prevent this from getting dusty again. It was my Game of the Year for 2016 and I still think it's amazing.

Strasbourg - Dust Level: 1 year, 2 months, 30 days - I got to teach this to two good friends who hadn't played it yet. It remains one of the most innovative and unique auction games out there. I'd definitely play it more often if it weren't for the player count restrictions.

The Castles of Burgundy: The Card Game - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 30 days - This remains my least favorite Castles of Burgundy implementation. It still just seems so unnecessary. I get a kick out how much table space this small box card game commands for some reason, though.

This silly filler game was played quite regularly when we first had it, but had been a bit forgotten. I played it again last month during a weekend getaway with my gaming group. It still works when you want a silly filler.

I had played this once before and disliked it very much, this time was better. I think we used different modules of the expansion this time, but I don't remember. One of the strengths of the base game is that it's so simple and easy to explain, I don't think that should be messed with.

Hello! There was some dust being taken off this month!

Eaten by Zombies! - 3 plays
First Published 2011
3 years, 0 months, 22 days

It is a fine game - we played a few times, trying to beat the campaing, but couldn't, stopping at Day 4.

Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game - 5 plays
First Published 2015
2 years, 7 months, 7 days

We started a new campaing. After 3 defeats in the first scenario, we went on to win it and also the next one.

Cthulhu Wars - 1 play
First Published 2015
1 year, 6 months, 25 days

Although we took randomly the factions, all the new ones appeared! The game was a close one, with the Opener of the Way winning.

Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar - 1 play
First Published 2012
1 year, 6 months, 7 days

It was excellent to return to this one! Specially since I made my best score on it: 103 points!

Potion Explosion - 1 play
First Published 2015
1 year, 4 months, 4 days

Meh. I don't like this one all that much, even less in 4 players, which was how we played, as the downtime is simply too big.

Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King - 1 play
First Published 2015

Another neat one to come back to the table!

That was it! Regards,

With the thrill of a new 10x10 to pursue, we spent a lot of gaming energy chasing that goal this month, so there were a lot of new games eating up my time. I did manage to get one dusty game played -- the Vlaada Chvátil classic [=Dungeon Lords]Dungeon Lords[/].

Dungeon Lords - dust level 1 year, 3 months, 15 days
Chvátil's thematic worker placement game has a tight timeline (only four rounds until the heroes come stomping into your dungeon) and enough going on to make for some right proper brain burn. I like the way your reward depends not just on which space you pick but when you pick it, and trying to guess whether others will or won't take a particular reward is delightful and infuriating. I also like the dungeon building aspect, and the "see what the heroes do to your dungeon" phase reminds me of the delightful bits of galaxy trucker, in which you see just how badly your ship gets wrecked.

Wahay, the dusty tool worked for the first time in months!! (Although it didn't pick up all the image ids). Quite a number of dusty games, mostly from my "pile of games we haven't played in two years" that I am trying to work though, deciding if these are games that we can remove from our collection.

Tension - 1 play
First Published 1970
3 years, 0 months, 23 days
Current Rating -  7

I picked this up in a car boot sale years ago, and it was fun for a bit, but then fell out of rotation as we have better speed games. It was on the pile so we tried it again, and decided that we really didn't need to keep this in the collection any longer.

Top Trumps Tournament - 2 plays
First Published
2 years, 8 months, 29 days
Current Rating -  6

I thought the kids might have grown out of this one, but actually when we played it they enjoyed it so much we played it twice! It's just a sequence of very short top trumps games, but top trumps is actually quite fun, especially when played with kids and various topics.

Pass the Pigs - 1 play
First Published
2 years, 6 months, 22 days
Current Rating -  6

This is always silly fun, but often gets missed on the shelf, and it's not really something you'd choose often. We were waiting for a game to finish at the end of our games evening, so I pulled this off "the pile", and we spent ten minutes of fun throwing pigs. Definitely worth keeping for occasional silly fun.

Gulo Gulo - 1 play
First Published
2 years, 5 months, 23 days
Current Rating -  6

Another one I thought the children might have grown out of, but as it was on the pile we tried it again. My youngest didn't even remember it, despite playing it many times when he was younger - reminding me how short children's memories are when they're young. They did still enjoy it, so it's staying in the collection.

Enchanted Forest - 1 play
First Published 1981
2 years, 5 months, 3 days
Current Rating -  5

Another favourite of the children that has been forgotten about as they've grown up. My older son enjoyed playing this again, while the youngest couldn't remember it, but despite him liking memory games he wasn't that fond of it. We're keeping it for now, but this is definitely a candidate to get rid of in the future if it continues to stay on the shelf.

Snowdonia - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 3 months, 5 days
Current Rating -  7

I've been suggesting this for a while, but for some reason struggling to table it - and when it did table, I was on the other table! This month I did finally get it to the table, but with three, and the oddest game of it ever, as one player hoarded resources, which just meant the government built everything, as the white cubes were coming out so rapidly!! It also made me decide that although it was fun, it really doesn't do it for me any more, so I suspect this might get traded soon.

Catan: Cities & Knights - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 2 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  8

We've always played this with a particular friend, who rarely visits nowadays, so it hasn't been coming out. This month I decided to introduce it to my children, who are keen Settlers players but have never tried any of the expansions. They seemed to enjoy the extras the game added in, although weren't so sure about the extra length of the game. This game isn't going anywhere - just surprised it isn't coming out more often!

I thought I would never play this again, but I was looking for an RPG-like game with interesting encounters and I love the theme so I gave it another go. Here's what I said in the SGOYT thread:

I printed the PnP of the paragraph-style solo game and jumped in, then realized that there's so much bookkeeping that it makes more sense to play on a computer. Therefore I used the Vassal module when necessary but mostly used a series of Google spreadsheets and the rules/events PDFs to look up encounters.

And there is so much bookkeeping: who's on your crew, their stats, what they're carrying, where they are, if they're immune to a plague, if they have an alien companion; what vehicles you have, their contents, their guns, I could go on and on.

In short, it's just too much work for not the best payoff. You're basically trying to buy low and sell high but there are so many steps in doing so. I run a Star Wars RPG campaign so I think I'll mine the encounter paragraphs for ideas. There were some pretty interesting and bizarre situations in there.

I'm not the biggest fan of this game. It starts off pretty fun then turns into a slog of drawing blindly off the deck repeatedly.

I didn't think it was this long since I played actual Carcassonne.. but I guess it confuses things by playing it occasionally on an Android tablet.

This month I managed 2 plays with a work colleague during lunch and we will probably continue the tradition of having a game once or twice a month maybe.

Well, I must say I am shocked to see I hadn't played Asara for 4 whole years. It's a nice family game, a cardgame-influenced twist on worker placement (workers with suits - I had not seen this before, only later), And now my kids could play it as well. It's still fine, even if there are other games that do it as well now.

Team Asia is such a special experience, too bad it needs exactly 4 or 6 players so it does not hit the table often. But when it does, it's a blast!

My kids fell in love with TtR and they wanted to learn the 'huge-box, complex version'. Two plays in January and both of them loves it! When I bought it I was afraid it would become an expensive dud but it did not - not at all.

Only two games dusted off in January.

Treasure Hunter 2 years 5 months

That's Life! 1 year 7 months

I like both of these, and will have to try harder to keep the dust off them.

Race for the Galaxy - 2 plays - 7 years 4 months

One of the games that got me back into the hobby in 2008, I played it consistently until 2011; then, my game group changed and the prospect of teaching those accursed icons shoved the game in a box for many years. Someone's link on BGG sent me to the AI version and I played a couple of games. It's a good, quick tableau builder (one of the first?) with the Puerto Rico action-selection mechanism and it's still a good and enjoyable game. However, now I have San Juan, I think I'd always go there first as it's sooooooooo much easier to teach.

Lord of the Rings - 3 plays - 3 years 6 months

Ah, my first ever co-op boardgame, which I played a bucketload of times the year I got it and have dipped in and out of occasionally over the last two decades. I watched The Hobbit films with my son and, as he's not a good enough game player for LOTR:The Confrontation, this was an obvious choice for a game to play. The Event deck is a bit clunky by today's standards, but the game is well balanced and trying to win on 'hard' is indeed hard. Still love the theming.

Adventure Land - 2 plays - 2 years 2 months

Well, bloomin' typical: I was all conscientious and held off getting the expansion because my son went a little doolally over this game a couple of years ago; now, he's fine with it and, of course, the expansion is nowhere to be had. It's quite a simple game at heart, with a movement restriction that makes your decisions interesting and, having revisited it, the different 'scenarios' allow for a lot flexibility in making it more of a 'game system' than I had thought.

FUSE - 4 plays - 2 years

Coincidentally, my son asked to play this the day before someone else brought it to a game night, so I was fortunately refreshed on the rules. It got played a decent amount when first bought - enough to justify the purchase - but the recent plays made it feel a little over-frenetic and the blow-up cards an irritating irritant. Might be one to keep for my son to play with his over-energetic friends one day.

Formula Dé - 2 plays - 1 year 3 months

Ha! Image #168167... old game. Yes, I have the original version (well, not the very first one with the cross-reference grid for movement) but not Formula D. I also have 26 painted metal F1 cars and every track for all editions, bar the 10th Anniversary and the Bahrain map. I love this simple racing game: yes, it's got gobs of luck involved, but the game is about playing the odds and surging out of corners and I begin to appreciate that latter aspect more and more as I play more racing games (and DIRT: Rallycross, which I love, even if I'm generally bored of video games). Still love it, after all these --- 28!!! --- years.

I've got two 10x10 lists this year which is introducing brand new games as well as bringing back some of our games that have been dust collectors...

Orléans (2014) - 2 plays
2 years, 0 months, 10 days
Current Rating -  9

I had picked up the upgrade character tokens in a board game rummage sale last fall and was excited to try them out as my original cardboard ones were showing lots of wear from all the love this got a few years back. It was nice for my wife and I both to be reminded how much we enjoy this game. It is in my Top 10 and we are glad it is on our 10x10 this year.

Abyss (2014) - 2 plays
1 year, 6 months, 22 days
Current Rating -  7.4

My wife picked this as her purchase at Gen Con when it first came out and after a bunch of plays it has not seen much table time. I got her the expansion for Christmas a few years ago but we had only played it once. So my wife suggested we add it to this year's 10x10, play with the expansion and decide then whether we keep it or trade this beautiful game if we don't think we will continue to get many more plays out of it.

Orléans: Invasion (2015) - 7 plays
1 year, 0 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  9.5

After a couple of refresher games our real goal was to explore more of the first expansion. The last time this was on our 10x10 we spent all our time on the cooperative Invasion module, which is excellent. This time we might revisit it but we're trying more of the other modules and enjoying them very much. I added this game to my solo 10x10 as I wanted to give the solo modules a second chance. The first one was too easy the first time around and wrote it off as a good way to learn some basics. My retry confirmed that conclusion, but the second solo module is much harder and continues to puzzle me.

meeple Keep playing...

Looks like I've managed to play 3 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Tsuro -- (1 this month; 16 plays 6 years ago) _6⅓_
(images by Lothartvni & eizahn)

It's pretty, and easy enough to get to the table. But, curmudgeon that I am, I find that it doesn't satisfy. The decisions and scope are too limited to keep my attention.

It's fine for a situation like this play - where the sole point was the visiting among the players. I'd be unsastisfied if that was the only scenario in which I played games, though.

Continental Divide -- (1 this month; 3 plays 5 years ago) __
(images by thepackrat & clearclaw)

My play in this game was a bit disappointing. Despite having played before, I didn't demonstrate any competence with it this time out. A fine reminder to try to push things I like into play (an __ is in my top 3% of things I've rated) a bit more often, I guess.

New Frontiers -- (2 this month; 1 play 31 months ago) _8_
(images by Tom Lehmann & KenH)

Ok; this probably doesn't qualify. I'd been privileged to play a copy of a prototype. And this month's plays represent a shot at the finally-released title. I've really enjoyed it so far.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

After losing access to Finca for the last few years when a when the friend who owned it moved away I backed the recent(ish) Finca kickstarter as a Xmas present for Mrs Fish. She was very happy to receive it and I can see it getting regular use - we even played two games today with the family!

It was good to play Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery again. Quite a fun game and one I am happy to have remain in the collection. Funny story: Originally we were going to play Here I Stand but one of them managed to break his wrist falling off a unicycle (yes, really) so we were down to five. Still,my second run at Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery was good despite it ending with the most unsatisfying gladiatorial combat ever as (due to numerous cards) four slaves duked it out in a l-o-n-g combat.

Last weekend gone was Cacon our largest local convention. It was super hot (around 42/44 degrees on the Saturday and the convention was pretty pungent) but despite this Little Fish the Elder and I braved the heat and crowds to spend too much on stuff we don't need. Little Fish the Elder found a new copy of Loopin' Chewie for $15 which we grabbed. Mrs Fish was unimpressed but now our three and four player Loopin needs are fully addressed (we already own a copy of Loopin' Louie) and neither will ever get dusty again.

Still okay. My biggest problem is that at higher difficulties, it is very scripted. Unfortunately, this game had a player wanting to bump the difficulty to maximum. This meant that (as expected) everyones moves were extremely scripted).
