"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Patrician - Dust Level: 7 Years - Dust level is an estimate on this one because I don't have any logged plays of it from the six years I've been logging plays. But this was an early part of my collection and frequent play when I was first getting seriously into the hobby. I taught some friends it as an Obscure Bryce Game demo to great acclaim. This game really holds up. It's quick and elegant and offers a satisfying strategic experience. It's combination of area control and set collection is unique and engaging. I'd honestly forgotten how good this game was and hope to keep it as a more regular part of the rotation.

Tsuro - Dust Level: 5 years, 0 months, 1 day - Played this to kill some time between longer games and wasn't aware of how dusty it was until I logged my play. I've played the spin-off more recently and hope to try out the new Phoenix version later this year, but the original is still solid at a variety of player counts.

Nefertiti - Dust Level: 4 years, 6 months, 6 days - There was a guy at the local board game cafe visiting from out of town with a list of games from the library that he hoped to learn. Nefertiti was on the list and as obscure game he might not have the opportunity to learn elsewhere, suggested we play it. I had to refresh myself on the rules, but we were quickly underway and he really enjoyed it. This game is best at exactly four, which is why it is tough to get to the table, but it's worth it when it does happen.

Sushi Go! - Dust Level: 4 years, 1 month, 13 days - I don't play this game enough because it's always a happy experience when I do. I love those cheerful animate sushi guys who are blissfully unaware they're about to be eaten. I wouldn't eat them in real life, but I'll happily do it in a game.

Captain Sonar - Dust Level: 2 years, 4 months, 16 days - Played this a couple of times when it first came out but not since. It's not one I'll ever add to my collection, but I'm down for a game or two of it every now and then. This was a particularly memorable experience because I won as the captain of my team for the first time ever against a vastly more experienced crew.

Nightfall - Dust Level: 2 years, 3 months, 23 days - This is an annual play for us in both October for Halloween and February for my wife's birthday because it's one of her favorite deck-builders. But I guess we didn't get around to it the last couple of years. I'm happy I have a complete collection since the last expansion has gotten so expensive on the secondary market.

Sylvion - Dust Level: 1 year, 5 months, 17 days - This is probably my least favorite of the Oniverse games because it feels too easy compared to the others. But I wanted to try it out with the advanced rules and see if it opened up for me. Not yet. But I'll keep upping the difficulty level and see if any of them present a more satisfying challenge since the mechanics are fun at least.

Yahtzee Jr. - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 17 days - My sons and I brought the Pokemon version to a museum family night demo at the Union Pacific museum in Council Bluffs. It was a good fit for the audience and the kids had a fun time with it.

Catan: Ancient Egypt - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 5 days - This remains the best Catan spin-off in my mind. The additional elements provide a nice variance to the familiar Catan mechanics. We played it with my father in law, who won.

The Witches: A Discworld Game - Dust Level: 1 year, 0 months, 16 days - This is another annual play during February for my wife's birthday because she's a huge Discworld fan. This remains one of the few semi-coops I think actually work. The fact that the cooperative aspect is barely present helps that.

This one is actually in my Carthoris 10x10 Challenge for 2019, and we tend to play it with a full array of expansions. I feel like two-player sessions are a little short and underwhelming, though. We hardly ever see the volcano go. Does it work to play with two tribes per player?

Probably the last play ever of Tyros. Didn’t like it then, still don’t like it. Too much randomness for such a long game which pretends to be strategic.

Lovely game which should have been played at least when I decided to buy all three expansions, at Spiel 2017. It’s not a coop but you’re building the strong narrative together. Wonderful game.

To my big surprise it was more than a year ago when we played it. Also it was the first time we used the 5x5 promo which appeared to be quite powerful.

Honorable mention: Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small
Another surprise, 360 days ago since last play. Our 29th play!

Honestly, I don't know why I haven't put this game in my top ten.  (Maybe because I rarely get to play it more than once a year.)

The early game is carefully balanced so that no reasonably competent player can crash and burn, but the balance slowly but surely goes off kilter and then someone has to tip it right over. It's subtler than most in the 18xx family as there's no stock manipulation, no fear of having a presidency dumped and having to pay for a train out of pocket. The track building is quite restrictive, however, with limited tiles and stricter than normal rules on placement. And station tokens can be devastating - especially for the three railways in the South-East. For example, in our game on Saturday, both the SECR and LBSC got trapped down there.

I was a bit disappointed that our game didn't see any real use of the "new to me" expansions: 1825 Regional Kit R1: Wales and 1825 Regional Kit R3: North Norfolk. Part of the reason was that we kept the bank on the small side (£5000). It meant the game didn't go long enough for anyone to want to risk building the regional companies up.

This got a couple of plays at a gateway games night: two couples who were both already in the hobby needed a 30-40 minute filler until a longer game was ready and this fit the bill. A great abstract 2p game with two currencies and an interesting spatial element, with a unique theme that engages almost everyone. Happy to say both couples were intent on buying the game afterwards.

Dominion - 1 play

All time classic, although I don't even remember playing it 18 months ago. I took it to a game night after someone new to the hobby enjoyed another deck-builder and hadn't played the grand-daddy of them all. As it turned out a different set of people played and enjoyed it: the usual problem, though, people who can't shuffle. It was good to see a Gardens deck go up against a culling strategy (my cull got beaten by 1).

Kingdomino - 1 play

Current Rating -  6.5

Taught to a family of three at a kids' game afternoon: Kingdomino suits that situation brilliantly. I tried Queendomino, but it was too faffy; don't think I'll bother with Giants, either.

Actually the dust level is lower, because I logged one play for the expansion Shakespeare: Backstage a little over a year ago.
Shakespeare is a wonderfully tight eurogame. The expansion makes it less tight by giving you more options, it's not bad but I prefer just the base game.

Civ-light. When I first played it, I felt there was something missing but I couldn't figure out what it was. Now I felt the same, and I still don't know what it is. But it's definitely lacking something.

Quite a number of dusty games this month, as I tried to work through the pile of games I haven’t played in a while with the kids over half-term (with the aim of reducing our collection by getting rid of these games we almost never play). Also there are the usual games that just missed being played in under a year, just because we have so many games!

Where in the Wild? - 8 plays
First Published 1992
2 years, 11 months, 4 days
Current Rating -  6

This was a huge hit with my son when he was 4 and I played it over 100 times in a month, but now they’re older (he's just turned 9!) I was wondering whether to get rid of it. After 8 plays in the month, I can say the answer is no – it’s still just as popular now that they’re older. It’s such a short game you play multiple games at a sitting, and is surprisingly fun for something so simple! Will keep this one a bit longer!

Labyrinth - 1 play
First Published 1986
2 years, 8 months, 15 days
Current Rating -  5

We’ve only ever played this car boot sale acquisition I remember from my childhood a handful of times, so I thought this was an obvious candidate to get rid of, especially when my youngest refused to play after the first round, when he was blocked from his first card, but the other two actually really enjoyed the maze aspect, and my daughter in particular, asked me to hold on to it.

By Golly! - 1 play
First Published 2001
2 years, 5 months, 12 days
Current Rating -  5

This was one of the games on the pile I assumed they were going to say I could get rid of as it’s been so long since we’ve played it, and it was never that much of a hit anyway, but they really enjoyed it and asked to keep it, so maybe not! It is just a light memory game, a bit like matching pairs but slightly different. Will see how long it is until the next play!

On the Dot - 1 play
First Published 2006
1 year, 9 months, 2 days
Current Rating -  7

This was almost a revenge pick by one of the gamers at my gaming group, after he did terribly at Chronology, so picked this as something he was quite good at instead! He still couldn’t compete with me, but did have fun trying. I also decided to sell him my copy after the play, as I really don’t play this much anymore, as I don’t have any real competition and can’t be bothered training any up, and my children weren’t that interested in it the one time they tried it out.

[imageID= square]Birds, Bugs and Beans - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 5 months, 9 days
Current Rating -  5

I hoped this might be one that we could get rid of now the kids are older, but after this play they still wanted to hold onto it! It’s silly fun, and not too bad to play occasionally I suppose!

[imageID= square]Alchemist - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 3 months, 27 days
Current Rating -  8

The problem with this game is that no-one knows it well, so I have to re-explain it every time we play, and there’s always someone who doesn’t quite understand it at first and gets frustrated. It is definitely a filler that’s a bit different from anything else out there, but it’s still hard to table. Will keep and hope I can convince some more people to learn it!

[imageID= square]Scattergories - 1 play
First Published
1 year, 2 months, 22 days
Current Rating -  8

We just played one hand as a filler at the start of a games evening, but it was quite fun. An older family game that I do enjoy from time to time! As long as people don’t get too argumentative!

Lunar Rails - 1 play
First Published 2003
1 year, 2 months, 8 days
Current Rating -  8

As with all our crayon rails maps, only comes out just over a year, because we have so many different maps to play, and don’t play crayon rails games that frequently. This one took slightly longer to table than some too, as it’s more work, so required my husband to be in a particularly awake mood to cope with finding everything and the more complex wraparound geography.

[imageID= square]Mhing - 2 plays
First Published
1 year, 1 month, 15 days
Current Rating -  8

An old family game I enjoy playing with my husband from time to time. The amusing thing this month was that I played it with my husband earlier in the month, then my sister came to stay, and was looking at our games shelves and spotted it and remembered loving it when she was a child so demanded to play, so I played it a second time in the month! And she enjoyed it so much she requested another game with my husband the next night too!

[imageID= square]Sorry! Sliders - 4 plays
First Published
1 year, 1 month, 5 days
Current Rating -  8

Only just made this list. This only ever comes out at about yearly intervals, but is fun for something light and silly in a games session, so definitely still a keeper.

Not owned but played again after a long gap:

I don't normally count games I haven't owned between the two plays, but this month I've come across a couple of games that were resurrected after a long time for one reason or another.

Sylla - 1 play
First Published 2008
7 years, 5 months, 29 days
Current Rating -  5

We owned this very briefly seven years ago, and traded it on after 3 plays as we really didn't enjoy it. A gaming friend brought her copy along to a games afternoon and asked me to teach it to her. It reminded me why I got rid of the game in the first place!! Just not that enjoyable - too dry and nothing in it grabbed me.

Mystic Vale - 1 play
First Published 2016
2 years, 0 months, 4 days
Current Rating -  6

The same gamer friend owns this, and her son brought it along to a games evening to play. I wasn't that fussed, but my husband remembered liking it so wanted to play. I think it just reminded me why I didn't really enjoy my first play either - the swing between failing and succeeding on pushing on your early turns can be just too much, especially when there are only a couple of really good cards available to add to your hand. This time my husband got an amazing card first round that had two symbols on that matched two of the cards at the top, that got him two extra cash every turn, and he was uncatchable from there.

[imageID= square]Hamsterrolle - 2 plays
First Published
1 year, 5 months, 0 days

I've been wanting to pick this up in MathTrade for ages, and succeeded this month, so I now own a copy! Quite appropriate really, given that the gamer who introduced me to this game, and whose copy I used to request plays of every so often, died this month.

[imageID= square]Bärenpark - 2 plays
First Published
1 year, 3 months, 22 days
Current Rating -  8

Another game I acquired in MathTrade this month after enjoying my first play just over a year ago! I can see this one getting quite a lot more play in future months.

We had a gaming weekend and it’s the perfect moment to undust some games.

Sator Arepo Tenet Opera Rotas - 1 play
First Published 2008

Current Rating -  8

I wonder why this doesn’t hit the table more. It’s a fun puzzly game and
the theme appears in my eyes as a combination of Harry Potter and
In The Name Of The Rose. I hope to play this more often so it doesn’t get
dusted again.

The Resistance - 3 plays
First Published 2009
3 years, 3 months, 29 days
Current Rating -  8

We play more long deduction games as Battlestar Galactica and
The Thing but at gaming weekends we play this as a filler waiting
till other players finished their game to start new ones.

Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery - 1 play
First Published 2012
2 years, 5 months, 27 days

I definitely wanted to play this game again. I liked the series and I like
the game. If you just want an entertaining evening without brainburners just
put this on the table.

When I Dream - 1 play
First Published 2016
2 years, 3 months, 11 days
Current Rating -  8

Why took it so long to replay this game? I have no idea! Maybe because
I don’t own it myself and have to hope for someone to bring it with them.
It’s a fun and crazy game. Great filler! I hope I can play this more.
Not for sale anymore in my country but maybe I can find it on a market.

The Game - 1 play
First Published 2015
1 year, 9 months, 10 days
Current Rating -  7

Played this as a filler waiting for other players to start Cosmic Encounter.
Not easy to win but when finished you want to start a new game. I believe
this one could be addictive for some people.

Venezia 2099 - 1 play
First Published 2014
1 year, 8 months, 13 days
Current Rating -  8

This game plays within one hour and is a perfect gateway game.
It gathered dust because it’s unknown by the majority. Our play
is the only one recorded for february so I believe it’s gathering
dust not only on my shelves.

Doctor Who: Time of the Daleks - 1 play
First Published 2017
1 year, 2 months, 16 days
Current Rating -  9

I think I own too much games and I think there are too much games.
I have no idea why it took more than a year to replay this game but I’m
sure it won’t stay on my shelves that long anymore. A little luck is needed
but heyyy that’s life!

Bah, not a lot of dusty plays... heck not a lot of plays, period.
Hand drafting has a love/hate relationship with me. This is the only hand drafting game that I love. It is what 7 Wonders aspires to be.

Hate drafting and player interaction is strong and rewarding. One actually cares what others are playing. Setup and clean up is a breeze. Not bad for a $12 game.

A pair of space empire-building card games made the list. First to the table was Race for the Galaxy, and it had been so long, I made some rules goofs on the first attempt. By the second solo play, they were ironed out.
Four empires take up a lot of table!

Playing RftG reminded me that I had another similar game gathering dust, so I gave Eminent Domain a shot. I'm not sure why I rated both games the same, as I now think that "Race" has better staying power. I'll probably lower my rating for ED accordingly.

In any event, "Race" will go to gaming group Friday, while "ED" went back on the shelf.

I love this game, but we're really bad at it. 18 months ago I played with my wife Legend 2, and we failed miserably. This time we replayed Legend 2 and we failed miserably.

I need to play it more often or we'll play Legend 2 forever in some kind of Twilight Zone pastiche shake

Undusted this game to play it solo with the Oh My Goods!: Longsdale in Revolt expansion and it's great. The expansion really improves the game by providing more buildings that make some good transformation chains viable, improve the rules, add a campaign system that is basically a strategy tutorial. Great stuff.

Long time since we played any of the Mystery rummy games. I'll bring out the others ASAP, they are great games that shouldn't be kept on the shelf for this long. I won the game BTW, by virtue of finding Bonnie in the first hand and Clyde in the other, and I won by a total of 19 points...

Bug sometimes gets lost in the shuffle of other abstracts I have and not just because it is likely the one I am worst at. I'm embarrassed I let this get dusty so am going to reprioritize! Now that I've gotten rid of my GIPF project games it's likely to see more time.

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game - 1 play -  7.5

I was a Cylon from the beginning which is always hard since the other four players had maybe 2 games of experience between them (and those sessions were so long ago they may as well have been newbs). I'm just realizing how coveted all my BSG expansions I never use are. My guess is we will never get to them with our pace of one BSG session every 3 years.

I had a friend who saw someone attractive playing M:TG and wanted to learn what it was all about. I got a free intro pack from a local store and we played a game and a half. I don't mind this game but if I felt the urge I'd rather play it online since there's so much administrative work required to play it.

Bruges - 1 play

I had played this only once before, back in 2013. In that game, Dan won what had previously been a close game because he played the Engraver, allowing him to roughly double our scores. Last month, Joe Huber was on his usual maniacal quest to play all the games he hadn't played in the previous year, and he asked whether I'd be willing to play it again. I agreed, figuring that if Dan didn't get the Engraver, it might be okay.

Well, my second play simply underlined how much I dislike this game. What steams me the most is the fact that the game gives you the illusion that you have some control over the cards you draw by allowing you to draw from either of two decks. It didn't help in my first game, and it didn't help in this, my last game. Halfway through I just drew all my cards from the smaller deck to make it end as soon as possible.

I reduced my rating by 2 points after my second play.

I got this to the table with my coworkers, who rated it as not bad. But after playing a lot more games in between I now see how fiddly this is for what you end up doing during the game. Onto the trade/sell pile it goes.

I knew this had collected a lot of dust . And there's no reason for it, really. It plays pretty fast, rules recap was a breeze. Only the setup was a bit of a nightmare, but I think I improved that already by organizing the stuff better when putting it away. It's a great game, it deserves to be played more often!
Oh, and I won with a tiny margin of 4 points!

Used to play this with some friends who moved away long ago. One of them returned for Dundracon, so we broke this out once again. I kicked up a little dust of my own this February...

Farkle (1996) - 1 play
zombie 4 years, 6 months, 19 days
Current Rating - N/A

We received a 10-round Valentine's Day dinner edition of this game as part of a special "date in a box" that we played. I was getting some crazy good rolls throughout the game. My wife came back in the last two rounds to nearly pulled off an amazing comeback victory.

Summoner Wars (2009) - 1 play
zombie 3 years, 11 months, 14 days
Current Rating -  8

It had been so long I had played this that I forgot I had it, until my buddy requested it to finish up a recent night of gaming. We randomly drew the Swamp Orcs and Mountain Vargath. I went on the offensive immediately but got devastating rolls and managed insufficient magic at the times I needed it to put together a cohesive strategy. Both of us were a bit rusty. It actually ended up being closer than I expected but with the same result in my losing. I really enjoy this game, I just don't get to play it any more.

The Voyages of Marco Polo (2015) - 2 plays
zombie 3 years, 7 months, 27 days
Current Rating -  8

The first and last time I played this was an hour demo at Origins when it first came out. Now that I finally have my own copy, it was slow going making sure we understood the rules and the payments required for taking occupied blue action spaces, but it made sense. We also realized in the penultimate round that we never dealt out goal cards (oops!) which might have steered our choices a little differently. We did include the goal cards in our second play so are on track to continue enjoying this one as part of our 2010 10x10 Challenge.
Flick 'em Up! (2015) - 1 play
zombie 2 years, 1 month, 8 days
Current Rating - 6.8

Flick 'em Up! is also on my 10x10 list. I had a friend request this one to see what it was like. So, we tried our hand at some dexterity playing the first scenario and went the full allotment of rounds, failing to eliminate three cowboys before time was up. I was close but unable to end it early and due to a missed shot after a really good move for positioning, I lived to the end. But ultimately I lost by one life point in the tiebreaker. I finally saw the fun and strategy come together.
Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia (2011) - 1 play
zombie 1 year, 10 months, 3 days
Current Rating - 7.8

I brought a bunch of games to a church leaders' retreat and pulled this out for a bunch of guys I know enjoy Ticket to Ride but who have never played any of other maps or variants. So I was happy to dust of Team Asia and my partner and I went on to win. Everyone enjoyed it and admitted it was much harder and thinky than what they were used to, but they need to look into some of these other expansions. This is also my favorite way to play TtR.

Pit Crew (2017) - 1 play
zombie 1 year, 1 month, 17 days
Current Rating - 6.2

I went to a surprise birthday party for a friend of mine and was asked to bring a variety of games. I knew there would be gamers and non-gamers alike so Pit Crew was one I felt we could enjoy with mixed company. My partner and I were beat pretty handedly by the other team. We made a valiant effort and closed a sizable gap in the last round (4th) but were unable to overcome our lag in the first two rounds.

I can't remember the last month where I had so many dusty games. I really enjoyed it and glad to get some more mileage on some of these titles.

meeple Keep playing...
