Welcome to
Kids on Board Games Geeklist
- March 2019

Hello all and welcome to the monthly "Kids on Board" games Geeklist.

Children need time to play alone and with other children without adult intervention, but playtime with adults is also important. As we all know board games are great for that. Not only do they teach children patience, problem solving, social skills and creativity amongst other things they can just be plain FUN for everyone.

This is a geeklist for anyone that plays any board games with children. Remember, they don't have to be your own children! (Just get permission first if they aren't!!) Hopefully it will inspire, inform, advise and open our eyes to the world of gaming with kids.

Feel free to post geeklist items, comment on other peoples items and generally mingle in the comments below. Also, consider spreading the word to anyone you feel may be interested.

Now, all you need to do is:

1. Play a board game with kid(s) within this month - it'd be extremely helpful if you can give the ages of the kids
2. Post a geeklist entry after you've played
3. Let us know how it plays
4. Provide feedback for others:
- hopefully one comment/word per child, maybe they can devise their own rating system?
- give your own overview, the adults perspective on how it was for you and how it seemed for them
5. Be nice, it's okay to disagree but it's not okay to be rude - we're all different but also the same
6. That's it!

Feel free to post photos but also feel free to avoid using full face pictures and avoid full names. You know, the usual internet safety rules.

This Month

Hi and welcome to March!

Is it too early to declare Spring? Here in the UK we are having a very unseasonably Warm and Dry end to the Winter. I am not complaining however as this means the local trails where I like to ride my Mountain Bike are in really good condition.

With this in mind I would like to theme this month with outdoor activities. Be creative and see if you can theme a walk in the forest, a cycle ride, or a game of football/soccer, etc to your boardgames.

Happy Gaming
TC

Since it was half term on Friday Sarah managed to accompany Paul to the usual boardgame meetup and she brought their two little ones with her C-5 and L-2

They only stayed about 45 minutes but we played a lot of rounds of Charades with adults guessing and L and C doing the actions, with daddy (Paul) helping of course

C is surprisingly good at Charades, but gets quite frustrated if we adults cannot guess the action quickly.

Next up was an animal themed version of old maid.
We used to play this endlessly for hours when my B was little.

We called it the best friends game and C had fun finding the best friends. She did struggle a bit holding all the cards, but surprised everyone at the end by being able to count up the scores in 2's all the way up to 12.

C and I scored the same points at then end.. meaning we must be best friends too

On Sunday I volunteered at my FLGS who were running a STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Maths) event in conjunction with the local University and local museum.

The idea was to have science themed games and then a scientist to explain some of the science behind it.

I was tasked with running games of Pandemic survival (survival is a competitive variant on Pandemic whereby the decks are seeded so everyone draws the same cards at the same time and you play until 4 cures or last team standing)

The event was aimed at families with children between sort of 8- 13 and everyone seemed to have fun. There were a lot of pandemic stickers on the feedback poster in the I had fun I learned a lot column

Played this with my 10yo. She picked it up super fast, and we played it in about 30 mins. Great fun. It gives me a Splendor feel, but with more interesting (and just generally more) decisions. My daughter did really well, but I triggered game end by launching my 4th ship thanks to getting 5 of each type of card out (which gives you a free launch). She had just one action, and couldn't get a ship launched in that time.

I think it might be worth having it so that there's one more round after the end-game trigger, not just finishing out the round in which end-game was triggered. Might be a bit fairer.

Saying that, I only won by 1 point (14 to 13), so it was super-close!

Highly recommended, if you can get hold of a copy (I got mine from Philibert.net in France).

Neill: Does this count as an "outdoors" enough theme for the theme of the month?... Sending people to Mars and then Ganymede to then send off across the cosmos?...

Played this a few times with my 8yo (and once with her and my 10yo and 12yo). Always a fun, quick, easy-playing time.

My 8yo LOVES it. It helps that she's apparently an amazing dice-roller and kept rolling the dice results she needed [and there was no cheating in that, as I was watching her]. She whipped us all in the 4p game, scoring 44 to our measly score range of 8 to 22.

In the games with just her, she only just won one (it was only a few points in it), and in the other, she scored a good 15 points more than me, despite me winning the paintings bonus: She seems to do really well on getting lots of gems, which score in triangular numbers, so 1=1vp, 2=3vp, 3=6vp, 4=10vp, etc. She was getting 4 or 5 of a kind each game, in EACH colour, so was racking up points that way. Cunning.

Highly recommended also, especially for slightly younger kids (I'd say 6+ for being able to mechanically play the game, 8+ for understanding some decent strategy).

The whole family (my wife and I, and our 6yo daughter and 5yo son) played games last night (Sunday night). We had a blast!

The first game was Clue Jr. This is not my favorite game to play, but our house rule is that we will play it once per month. The rule makes it so the parents don't get too tired of the game, but it also makes it a more special undertaking for the kids.

I pulled the trigger on a guess when I had all of the information except two possible time options. I chose the wrong time, and my wife was able to guess everything on the next turn.

Then we moved on to the River. Various combinations of us had all played it, but this was our first time with all 4 playing.

My strategy of buying buildings as quickly as possible worked well enough for me to win. My wife and our 5yo tied for a close 2nd, and our 6yo brought up the rear because she couldn't quite get the 10 point building she had reserved built in the last round.

We finished the evening by playing Love Letter. My kids both cheered when I picked it (we were playing winner picks the next game).

We played to 3 hearts, as it was close to bed time. It was a fantastic game with all 4 of us holding 2 hearts going into the last round. Our 6yo daughter played a great last round (she had the princess and threw us off her scent) and won the game.

This was a birthday gift for myself, and I played several rounds with the 11yo and the 6yo this weekend. Really a beautiful game; both the cards and the chips are very pleasing to handle. The 11yo did pretty well at grasping the strategy. The 6yo played fairly successfully with her “grab all the gold” plan. PLUS the kids get math practice scoring each round. Great 2p title.

This is a silly game that we enjoy playing occasionally. It has some deduction, but it’s really a race to either get out while your character’s portrait is showing or to eliminate all of the other players in a number of gruesome ways.

Me and my mum love this game and my 8 yr old daughter has been begging to play it for ages but I was going to leave this a while as thought maybe too much for her. She wasn't very well today so missed school but was better after lunch and she asked again and thought why not since we had a little more time than usual. I used the summer vacation variant where you pretty much take out the event/city/blueprint cards and she surprisingly picked it up super quick and beat me by two points easily.

I thought of it as similar to Everdell in the sense of building a funfair or building your town but she seems to think of it very differently and much prefers this one and loved everything about it. We're still trying to get another game of Everdell in as need to see if the game speeds up with experience but she thinks this game is more repetitive than Unfair? Anyway, the way you use the cards and build your funfair turned out to be really intuitive for her to learn with little explanation required in comparison to Everdell.

She loved it so much she actually said it knocks Downfall of pompeii off her number one spot which has never happened before in three years so I'm really happy we can now play it all together. She can't wait to use the city and event cards next time which I see no problem with adding and we'll add the blueprint cards in a little later. She's also really looking forward to the aliens and dinosaur packs in the expansion due soon.

Well I suppose walking through a theme park or funfair is certainly an outdoor activity of sorts - tires you out more than a blinking cycle or long walk anyway

Played this twice with my 12yr daughter, it was our first game of it.

First game we where pilot and explorer. Played on novice difficulty and won fairly easily. I found the pilot skill to fly anywhere was really powerful.
Our second game we played on standard and we where the engineer and diver.
We only just won with fools landing as the last part of the island to still be there. Was quite thematic I thought.
Not bad little game at all. Will be playing again for sure

I've been on a bit of a Sid Sackson kick lately, so it was time to play a classic that we had never tried before.

After fumbling about for a bit, everything clicked. Looks like we've found a push-your-luck game that my partner and at least one of our children enjoy. (My partner hates Deep Sea Adventure, and the kids think Pickomino is a drag.) Both said they were surprised how much they enjoyed it by the end of the game despite losing to moi.

I suppose the driving theme could be considered outdoors-y.

I played Battle Penguins with my two kids last night. This game was actually a gift for my 5yo for his birthday last month, but sometimes he gets nervous about trying to learn a new game. I had played a 2p variation with my 6yo a couple times, and so I was excited to be able to convince my 5yo to play with us last night.

He picked it up right away! I was in last place after the first round, but then I was able come back and take the lead in the 3rd round. The final scores were 20(me), 18(5yo), and 16(6yo).

Our children like this game, and several geekbuddies give it positive ratings, but the more I have played it, the less enthusiastic I've become. I don't think I've ever wanted to play more than one race, which means what looks like a turn order advantage is more apparent.

The best part of the race was watching the kids realise that they needed to be economic with their choices or they would run out of cards.

Now this racing game is more my... speed. I find the tension much more tangible, and there are more opportunities to look ahead towards possible advantages or (literal) pitfalls.

All five of us had two pieces over the finish line and were within striking distance of a win when our youngest was forced to move my piece, giving me the win. She looked disgusted, but I think she secretly loved it.

Since there is a lot of travelling around and battling in outdoor locations in this game, I think it fits the theme, right? whistle

Started a two player campaign with my 9yo. He hadn't heard of the game before we got it, but as we opened it up and began punching everything out he declared that this was his favorite game ever (solely on the art!). Fortunately he is enjoying the game-play as well.

He caught on quickly to the two-card action method, as well as the need to stay flexible, and was excited to re-play a mission we had lost. His reasoning was that we now knew more information about the mission so we can plan our moves better next time. That is something that might sound obvious to the rest of us, but he is the kind of kid who tends to give up quickly when playing a difficult video game, having trouble with a school subject, or otherwise doesn't get something correct the first time. I was excited to see him show this mature attitude and desire to figure out and overcome a challenge. I don't know if it is because we are in it together, but its cool to see a game being a catalyst for some personal growth.

Istanbul (not Constantinople...) has long been a favourite of me and my wife's and we have both thought for some time that our eldest (now 12) might enjoy it too.

Today was the day.

And we were right. She really enjoyed it but was disappointed she didn't win. Glancing at the 'board' she noticed rings were very hard to come by, so we pointed out where they could be gained but other than that she flew her own path.

She was actually the first to get a ruby and had no problems with the actions or rules generally. I thought I was one move away from winning but my wife swooped in and grabbed her fifth ruby for the win. Me and D both ended with 4 rubies each.

This game goes fast, it felt great racing our wheelbarrows through the (outdoor?) souk trying to block, gamble and wheeler deal our way to rubytastic glory.

Big fun.

Weather today has inspired us to hunker down indoors and we opted for a lazy Sunday - pyjamas all morning and a four player game of Wildlands to boot.

We really need to play this more often, I think there is still a lot for us to learn in terms of good gameplay. The interrupt action really makes this game for me but it's too tempting to keep them for wild card actions as well. I am close to seeing great moves but stumble in executing them for one reason or another.

Anyway, me and the kids enjoyed trying to beat each other up whilst dashing to grab cystals. Meanwhile, mum quietly edged her way around and suddenly she was hoarding four crystals, only one point away from winning.

When we realised, that focused our attention. However, we just couldn't stop her moving in to place the last damage on the kill I had been working on and grabbing the win.

The kids (12 & 10) enjoy this one and we definitely need to play it more often.

I played a quick game of Diamonds with my 6yo last night. The 2p variation has each player play two cards in a standard 4 card trick, and I haven't quite wrapped my head around it yet. I prefer it with more than 2, but I like it as an introduction to trick-taking games for my daughter. Maybe I should pick up The Fox in the Forest as a better 2p alternative...

My daughter played great last night and beat me soundly!

This weekend past we had one of the few established UK 'cons', Airecon hosted in Harrogate (Northern England) boasted board gaming notables like Rodney (Watch it Played) Smith & Matthew (This Game is Broken) Jude.

We however just played some games. First up was Rhino Hero Super Battle. Always impressive on the table, and in this case we had the jeopardy of a blast of wind coming in from the door to the catering area!

We ended up playing 3 hands of Sushi Go over the day.

2 rounds were played while also eating lunch, and while waiting on Mrs C to finish work and join us, and one while I was waiting before collecting my unsold games from the bring and buy.

Sushi go is one of our classic card games. Draft and pass simpleness, really in should be on hand more for the simple joy.

This is probably not a big surprise to any regulars of the list that we took Clank! along. One of our go to games.

Perfect for our family day at a con. No rules explanation required and everyone new what to do even with the background noise and distractions.

Played the regular board, and despite some strange route choices Mrs C was the winner and somehow I managed to get slayed by the Dragon. Just too noisy I guess.

New acquisition, after waiting a long time for the reprint. I didn't really "play" this with the 6yo, but she couldn't resist all the brightly-colored vegetables. So while I solo'd a two-handed game to learn the rules, I let her push the veggiemeeples around as appropriate. 4yo stopped by a couple of times and asked if she could "try" them--which meant "eat" them. 9yo expressed an interest in playing. He prefers co-ops, but also enjoys low-interaction competitive games, so this might be a good fit for him.
