"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Evo - Dust Level: 4 years, 3 months, 10 days - I brought this out of the dust for a dinosaur-themed game marathon I was doing at Tri-Con in Sioux City. I'd forgotten the game has a runaway leader problem, but it was still a fun time. I should try the second edition sometime and see how it's different.

Apex Theropod Deck-Building Game - Dust Level: 2 years, 2 months, 25 days - I ended my dinosaur-themed game marathon at Tri-Con with another dusty game. I usually only play this solo, but used the popular 1st edition-inspired boss variant for this multi-player play. One of the participants was a kid who was getting frustrated at the deck-building concept of having to put his purchased cards in the discard pile instead of using them right away. But he was a very self-aware kid and after he won the game, he said "Now I feel bad about getting frustrated." laugh

Kingdom Builder: Big Box - Dust Level: 2 years, 1 month, 22 days - I brought this out of the dust to play with my wife. It's one of her favorites and we didn't get to it in her birthday month of February either of the last two years, so made some time for it now instead. I didn't remember any of the Harvest buildings we played with, so we should probably play some more and refamiliarize ourselves with the rest.

The Great Dinosaur Rush - Dust Level: 2 years, 1 month, 15 days - Another out of the dust play thanks to my dinosaur-themed game marathon at Tri-Con! I taught the game to a family, who really enjoyed it. We had an exciting conclusion where the game came down to the suspenseful nefarious token reveal at the end.

Sushi Go Party! - Dust Level: 1 year, 11 months, 2 days - I hadn't played the Party version in awhile, but rectified that by finally adding it to my collection. I taught it to my nine-year-old, who fell instantly in love with it. We've playing it frequently ever since and I think we'll make it our monthly demo at Spielbound, Omaha's board game cafe, in April!

Glass Road - Dust Level: 1 year, 10 months, 2 days - Surprised my favorite Uwe got dusty, but evidently it did! I love how the four round length catches even experienced players off guard. "No! The game can't end already! I still have all these things to do!" Glass Road is the perfect Euro game encapsulated: Not nearly enough time to do everything you want and leave the player wanting more. So satisfying.

Toc Toc Woodman - Dust Level: 1 year, 9 months, 6 days - My kids usually prefer Bling Bling Gemstone, but for some reason they grabbed this one to play this time at our monthly visit to the local board game cafe. There's really no difference between the two versions. My youngest is getting better at this one too. He lasted pretty long in one of our games before toppling over the pile of tree trunks that had accumulated.

Portal of Heroes - Dust Level: 1 year, 8 months, 25 days - I learned this at Origins a couple of years ago as part of Mayfair's ribbon chase and have been keeping an eye out for a good deal on a copy ever since. It's not been a high priority want, but I was not disappointed when it connected with me in a recent math trade. One of my game groups was not impressed with it, but I intend on showing it to the others and my family as well.

El Grande - Dust Level: 1 year, 3 months, 1 day - I finished second in an excruciatingly close game at Yucata. The eventual winner jumped out to an early commanding lead but I was pleased at how well I was able to manipulate things to close the gap by the end. Third place was only a single point behind me!

Rum & Pirates - Dust Level: 1 year, 1 month, 10 days - I last played this as part of one of my Feld marathons at a local convention and had a chance to play it again most recently as part of what turned into a Feld marathon at a friend's house. This is an under-rated game and I was pleased the other players appreciated its unique mechanics.

This is shameful! We had played this quite a bit when it was new and then it got more or less forgotten at the back of the shelf. Every now and then I would think about playing it, but couldn't find it. So last month I did some cleaning out of shelves and found it at the back behind some empty deck boxes! So finally, Rome got some Glory back. And I still like this game a lot. I got whooped, but that was in no way detrimental to my enjoyment. But you have to play more often to get the combos really going. Hopefully, it won't vanish again...

Oops, another surprise entry into this list. I knew we hadn't played it in a while, but that it was almost 2 1/2 years, I had no idea. We played with the expansion (Rocks of Ruin), which makes the game a bit longer, but also the map looks more complete. I like this game, but it has strong competition. So, possibly it will become a repeat offender in this list .

Some of my favourite games on the list this month (9's & 10's!). It's a shame they went unplayed so long, but it was good to have them back.

Brass: Lancashire - 1 play
First Published 2007
4 years, 5 months, 4 days
Current Rating -  8

The first time I played Brass I didn't fully grasp the game. In between, I've played Age of Industry and Brass: Birmingham and now I feel like I know what I'm doing (I'm not an expert player by any means, but at least I can enjoy the game without feeling out of my depth).

Concordia: Britannia / Germania - 1 play

I did play other boards in between.

Small World - 1 play

Still a great game. Should play this more often, but that's true for so many games...

Wow, did I really not play TtR for so long? Unbelievable. Shouldn't happen again, this is one of my favourite games.

Century: Spice Road - 1 play

Played at Essen Spiel once. Recently a friend bought it when it was on sale somewhere. My first opinion was reaffirmed: fun game, but gets repetitive pretty fast.

Star Realms - 1 play
First Published 2014
1 year, 4 months, 15 days

I had grown a bit tired of it, but after such a long gap it kind of felt fresh again.

I dusted off three games in March.

Asking for Trobils - 3 years 9 months

I think this is an awesome couples games, as you can never do anything bad to your opponent, except capture trobils just before they can.

Tikal - 2 years 10 months

An enjoyable game to be sure, just not special.

Splendor - 1 year 2 weeks

Kind of surprised to add this, but not really, since my wife has this on an app, and we play that a lot.

We played this game because we wanted to end our gamenight with a light one. After all these years it still is a no-brainer and more a dice chucker. It couldn’t impress us to increase the rating.

I played this game once and couldn’t find all these years someone else who had this game in their collection. Finally it was reprinted and I could lay my hands on a copy. I’m sure this game will not catch any dust anymore in future. After all these years it’s still a simple (rules) but tough decision making game.

This game stayed on the shelves due to an Arkham Horror: The Card Game campaign. Now that we finished that one we started back with these series. I love these kind of storytelling, crawling games. I’m always impressed how they can change the mechanics in each scenario.

Wow, just the one this month; I've had a lot of work on, so less gaming with my son who is usually the one who populates this list.

Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation - 1 play
First Published 2002
12 years, 11 months, 7 days
Current Rating -  8

My son saw the Lord of the Rings IP and instantly wanted to play, despite my cautions that it would be too difficult for him at 8yo. It was: he couldn't grok the asynchronous powers - though Fellowship vs Sauron was his main draw - and strategy and tactical play were non-existent. At 12 years, I'd completely forgotten how to play, myself, so probably best to call this a learning play and tell myself off for not getting it to the table more often. Hey, it's a small box and doesn't take up much room.

Not a Metagaming title! But my first dip back into Panzer in quite a while. This was inspired by the new Expansion #4, with its excellent solitaire rules and scenarios. I expect a lot more plays of this in the future.

This is a game I don't own, and which I did not like when I tried 3 years ago. But on game night everybody was invited to play so I had no recourse. To top it all I became the Godfather because I was the only one who played before.

Long story short I lost quickly the game by exposing the wrong player, and remain unenthusiastic. I don't think that the game itself is bad, but I really am not interested in playing it.

I have the Zooloretto : Mini edition but hadn't played it in 8 years, partly due to it being on extended loan to some friends. This month I gave it a try with my youngest (6 y/o), since he already knows how to play Coloretto.

I tried this with my youngest (6 y/o) as well, in preparation for playing it with some friends and their kids.. He coped with it ok, but I think for future games we'll play a more cut-back version of the game.

The kids (8 y/o and 6 y/o) have been eating up all things Escape, so I was glad to get this expansion out again and give it a try. It's a lot of fun, though some of the quest tiles are harder than others!

Yet another game I broke out and taught the kids (8 y/o and 6 y/o). They both understood the game, though not quite the strategy of getting your high-scoring guys to safety. They loved moving the sea monsters etc. and for the most part didn't get too upset when their guys got eaten by sharks etc. Will definitely be playing this with them again.

Went to a friend's house and we were at 6 so he suggested this. I think I may have had my first play of this with Andy above. Or at the convention I met him at.

Still a relatively ok game.ccwon it handily.

Still enjoy this take on Puerto Rico.

As my review written back then shows, even though I knew Samurai was the better game I found Samurai: The Card game still pretty good as a cardgame adaptation. I... still think so, but now I didn't enjoy the cleverness of the new idea (some interesting tactics with card placement that triggers figure placement) as much as before, while I found the lack of special tiles took away too much from the experience. So... It's still good, just not as good as I remembered.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 5 – United Kingdom & Pennsylvania - 1 play

Already 3 whole years since I last played this expansion? wow that's... rather surprising. Meanwhile my kids learned Ticket to Ride (First Journey, 25 plays, New York, 14 plays, before moving on to the big game and the expansions) so I played Pennsylvania with them now. And they really liked it - so did I. I know UK is the 'real' gamer's map but I think I always liked this side more.

I suspect I started logging all maps under the base game since it feels like I played this more recently. A great system and a tactical treat every time I play. My 2 most recent attempts to win with only 2 actions have not produced wins, but it has been fun to explore trying.

If anyone has an extra set of the "plates"/bonus circle cardboard pieces, then please let me know as mine have disappeared.

Played the Winter map on the 10th Anniversary edition board. A few new twists - threatening animal cards in the card deck must be dealt with or they affect your pips. The ability to turn in gold when buying a card for points and the ability to turn in stone when buying huts. There are also 4 "3 of the same base good tiles" with an extra few points. Really good players of the base game will likely still do really well in this version. Like the 2 sided map.

Alhambra - 1 play

A classic. This was a unique play where the renovate action was utilized MUCH MUCH more than I had ever experienced before. A large wall by one player allowed for a bit of a dominant game play.

It was not strictly a "pile of shame" game of me, but almost. Bought this game in late 2016, played a few solo games to practice the rules, and then a single two players game of the Scotland map Dec, 30th that year, which my cousin forfeit midgame, because I was running away.

Now I finally got it again on the table March, 29th. We were only three players, so I picked France, which seemed most reasonable at that low count. We all enjoyed it, and the game likely won't get such a thick layer of dust again for the next time being. I put it on my 10x10 Hardcore Challenge, if only as an 11th replacement game, still I hope to get some plays at higher counts, too. It was really good, but I think it has potential to shine even more with 5 or 6 on the right maps.
