"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

Machi Koro - Dust Level: 3 years, 9 months, 5 days - I've played the deluxe edition a little more recently, though the next play of that will be a dusty one as well. But this was a straight up base set play, which reminded me of how necessary the first expansion is. It's okay, but the lack of variety affects any desire to play again with just the base set.

Maus nach Haus - Dust Level: 3 years, 0 months, 8 days - I'd forgotten how challenging this game is to actually get one of the mice underneath the spinning ring. That's probably why it got dusty and probably why it will get dusty again.

Walnut Grove - Dust Level: 2 years, 8 months, 17 days - I taught this to a couple of friends I hadn't shown it to yet to great acclaim. This remains one of the most brutal games out there that mercilessly punishes the slightest mistake. These friends like that kind of game and I wouldn't be surprised if this gets to the table again sooner rather than later.

Lunar Rails - Dust Level: 2 years, 2 months, 7 days - I haven't played any crayon rails at all recently, but when I suggested we bring one out of the dust to my wife, Lunar Rails is the one she requested. I still think this is the toughest map in the series. That dark side of the moon is brutal. We had an amazingly close game that I just barely sneaked a victory out in.

Hisss - Dust Level: 2 years, 0 months, 20 days - This was part of our monthly demo at the Union Pacific Museum in Council Bluff's family night. It worked well as a quick game that was easy to teach and looked good on the table.

Helios - Dust Level: 1 year, 11 months, 30 days - I won my first game of this at Yucata thanks to completely ignoring building any temples and focusing on getting, activating, and maximizing three of the people. On the one hand, I feel bad about ignoring a key element of the game. On the other hand, I'm just glad to finally win this game!

Colony - Dust Level: 1 year, 11 months, 10 days - My wife and I learned this a couple of years at PretzCon as a play to win and a copy recently connected with me in a math trade. Since we'd played it before, it was an easy one to get to the table. This type of engine building game works well for my wife and I and I could see us playing this one fairly regularly.

Carcassonne: South Seas - Dust Level: 1 year, 3 months, 1 day - I cycle through all of the various Carcassonnes on Yucata and live from time to time and this one remains the most unusual of the bunch. I'm usually not very good at this particular iteration, but I tried something different this time, and though I had to settle for second, I felt I was more competitive than usual.

In accordance with my standard practice, I am reporting only on games that have at least 5 years of dust on them. There's just one for this month, but it's a big one. This is one of my .10!-rated games, and it's my favorite wargame. How could I not play a game I love that much for more than 6 years? Well, it's not an easy game to get to the table. You need a willing (and, given the length, eager) opponent, and you need a suitable day and time to play.

Paths of Glory - 1 play

Current Rating - .10!

Tom Lehmann contacted me before this year's Gathering of Friends and said he'd like to learn Paths of Glory. I was delighted to play with him. He read my Teaching Guide and the rules and brought the rule book with him (the game was too big to fit into his luggage with everything else he was bringing to the event.) I brought the game. We had a great time.

Steve Carey really hit it out of the park with this one and We Must Tell the Emperor: The Great Pacific War, 1941 to 1945. Fortunately, I was able to get both games while they were still in print. Great little solitaire game that you can get through in less than 90 minutes.

The first time I played this game it was a playtest copy prior to release. The game's designer Mark Herman demoed the game at a local convention. Plays much like 13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis.

A blast from the past, when I played a lot of wargames.
It was great to play this again but to be honest, the game is not so much fun. Too grinding and a little error can and will cost you the game.

I’m ashamed that so much time passed before finally playing one of my most favorite games ever, again. And I even had an unplayed board (Québec).
I won 18-17-16 and I was thrilled. Can’t wait to play again!

Russian Railroads - 1 play
First Published 2013

On the last day of the month another oldie was played. I remember that I didn’t enjoy previous plays but that was probably due to the AP prone company. It was because I like First Class so much, and my recently discovered 18CZ, that I wanted to give RR another spin. I’m glad I did. It’s far more enjoyable than I thought. A strategic worker placement where timing is key.
You know what, I think I’m going to add this game to my collection.

Unfortunately the opportunity to play two player games, despite how short they may be, just doesn't occur as much as it used to. That being said, this one is easily my favorite quick Twilight Struggle imitator.

My Ali Baba was awesome. He visited the Undersea Kingdom and the Jeweled City, gained a Robe of Honor and was Respected, and returned to Baghdad where he married a beautiful princess and won the game! After putting it off for a long while, I finally got the Kingdom Builder: Marshlands expansion, and its arrival kicked off a very pleasant round of plays for this game. My daughter, who had been cool to it, discovered how much fun it can be, and managed to beat me a little too. I'm surprised that I let this game get dusty!

I don't suppose I was the only one to dust this game off in April. Our play was good and competitive, and I won by a margin that was fully defined by my edge created through the Notre Dame action itself.

This was my only dusty play this month. I played with two much more seasoned players, so it was an amusing experience in watching my opponents battle for first place while I noodled along in a distant third. During my last move, I made a choice to specifically do something that benefited neither of my opponents, even though I had another move that would have earned me a couple extra points, but would have meant giving two rogues to an opponent. Since they ended up in a TIE, I would have been inadvertently king-making. Good thing I didn't do it! I don't want that kind of responsibility.

A distinct lack of dust this month: Math(s) Fluxx is a particularly tolerable incarnation of the oft-reviled Fluxx franchise; in fact, I quite like it, as long as you go in knowing that winning and losing can be as random as it can be orchestrated. Playing MF with the 'optional' rule cards is pretty much mandatory as it allows more flexibilty in play and brings the game closer to a City of Zombies level (or Secret Code 13+4 for slightly younger kids).

Guillotine - 1 play
First Published 1998
1 year, 5 months, 30 days
Current Rating -  8

I'll admit that if I were to buy and play Guillotine for the first time now, it would not be ranked an 8: a lot of take that and some skipped turns, hand-swaps, etc; but I first played in in the 90s and can enjoy it for what it is. A light, take-that game, with a great theme (apologies to any French out there, but we Brits get plenty of Mickey taken out of us... now there's a phrase for you!).

Played at a gateway game night, and enjoyed, as ever. Cards are getting a bit knackered after 20 years, though.

Village (2011) - 1 play

Current Rating -  8

Attending Lexicon is responsible for shaking the dust of this months selectins starting with a family favorite that has sat idle for a long time and involved finally getting the Port expansion played. The expansion definitely enhances the travel action and introduces a variety of point opportunities worth a few more plays to explore for sure.

Carcassonne (2000) - 1 play
zombie 2 years, 0 months, 26 days
Current Rating -  7.8

A classic that is always a joy and unfortunately doesn't get to table much any more is Carcassonne. My daughter picked it since her room mate had never played it before and it was an easy one to setup, teach and play while we ate dinner. We only played with the River and base game tiles to keep it more manageable with the distractions and diminishing energy level after a long day. I'd like to get this back to the table at home more often and may need to apply the 10x10 tag to it next year in order to do that.

Potion Explosion (2015) - 1 play
zombie 1 year, 3 months, 10 days
Current Rating -  7

I gifted my wife the first expansion for this one for Christmas but it wasn't enough to get it back to the table with all the games we are wanting to play. But this is another fun with we introduced my daughter's room mate to with just the base game. I was running away with it yet the game ended up being a lot closer than I expected. Yikes!

meeple Keep playing...

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Star Wars: Imperial Assault - 1 play

Played a trial game of Star Wars: Imperial Assault when I first got it and then settled down to paint the miniatures. Just over four years later I'm still not finished but a friend picked up the game & expansions over the silly season so he started a campaign with the intention we meet every fortnight to play a misison. We're running it off an app so we're all rebels. I’m playing Jyn Erso the smuggler and we’re teamed up with a Mon Calamari (a good friend but a great snack), Jedi wannabe and a rebel trooper who answers to the name of Cyril Figgis. Yes, our games are this serious.

Anyway, our team was tasked with defending the last few transports evacuating Yavin IV after the destruction of the (first) Death Star. The game played very well and we managed to hold on even with the Dark lord of the Showing up to put the frighteners on us towards the end. Anyway, the four of us are ensconced on the Freedom Fighter and are out in the wider galaxy looking for adventure, excitement and really wild things.

Naturally, the next scheduled session was cancelled because only two of us could make it.

I dusted off three games this month.

The Bottle Imp 8 years 8 months

I remember doing terribly when I played this in 2010, and did better this time.

Goa 7 years 1 month

I like this game, but I don't see the need for me to own a copy.

Botswana 2 years 4 months

Not a terrible filler, and will play with the wife since she likes it.

7 Wonders is an example of a fine game that my family doesn’t enjoy. Although the rule set is simple, it has too much going on to be a true gateway game, or in my case, a family game. Played it at a board game night with some gamers. They were quite experienced with it so I don’t do all that well, but I did enjoy my plays. A solid 7.5 for me, but needs to be an 8 before I’d own it. On the other hand, if I’m looking for a quick multiplayer game on a game night and I see someone has it in their duffle bag, I’d probably ask them to break it out.

It has been more than a year that this version hit the table. Dixit often hits the table but most of the time we play the Dixit: Odyssey version. This can happen with standalone versions.

I pulled this off the shelf to see if I should cull it or not. The answer is nope! I had a really enjoyable game with my friend, and it made me remember why I picked this game up in the first place.

I like how even though it's a race game, it's played over multiple games, so if you get hosed in one game, you still have a chance to win.

I also like how if you think your opponent is going to win the current race, it's time to even points out with the Magic Way. In fact, it's a good idea to keep an eye on that Magic Way because you could win, but still lose the round!

I love the auxiliary stack and how you can stash cards there for later.

I'm sad that they changed the rules for the second edition to simplify things.

I can't believe it's been almost 5 years since I've played this! It's quick and fun and every tile has special powers, and then you add in the neutral tiles and things go bonkers!

I didn't get to play with the neutral tiles in my dusted off play, but they're coming in the next one!

It's a crime that this game wasn't picked up in English! I have a lot of good 2 player only games that are in need of a reprint, is the market for them so small? cry

A healthy amount of dust for me this month - 6 dusty titles.

I ran a "Cult of the Old" series of game events at the end of April at a regional convention that doubles as a fundraiser in the fight against cancer (www.gaminghoopla.com). I purposely selected some oldies, but goodies that I thought the new to the hobby gamers might enjoy experiencing. It worked - all my events were full.

If you are looking for a regional con focused on game playing, then you should look into the Hoopla. Less than an hour from downtown Chicago and Milwaukee. Nearly 600 attendees, over 350 scheduled events, many open gaming opportunities, a free library of 450+ titles, a silent auction where over 1,400 games sold this year, an amazing raffle and a very welcoming and friendly environment. Hope to see some of you next April 24-26. The silent auction was open for 18 hours, over 1400 games sold in that auction --- roughly 77 games sold per HOUR!!!!

Played this as a closer on Day one of Hoopla. The well-curated board game library that the Gaming Hoopla has allowed us to locate an hourish long game for three pretty quickly.

A race game where you turn in crystals to put a cube of yours in the obelisk. It was a close game, but one player had a HUGE turn near the end with a large crystal reward and surged ahead of us.

Played it once 2p with my girlfriend as a refresher for the Hoopla and then again on the Sunday of Hoopla with 4 players. Cult of the Old Game # 5. I forgot how important those passenger points can be. I really enjoy the tension of should I run the passenger now or lay more track to extend the run. It is also interesting adding the ability to select short (5 to 11 point) or long (12-22 point) routes when drawing routes. The dead-end into foreign countries tripped up one player in the 4p game.

We had a newish to gaming gamer who enjoys D&D and 5 players so we dusted this title off at a buddies game night. It went over really well. It does serve a purpose as a good introductory worker placement game. I like the variability that the end game scoring cards and buildings provide too. It might be a little long for what it is, but you can't always get perfection in your games.

One of my favorites. I just have very few circumstances where we have 5 players who want to play a Knizia auction game. I know, I should game in different circles, right?

I opened up my Hoopla weekend teaching this game. Cult of the Old Game #1. I thought I was being smart by picking games that were in the game library. I knew this was the new version by Tasty Minstrel, but I did not know that there was no cool player aid in the new version. I also did not know that the rules changed the pyramid scoring. No longer scoring points for "sets" of pyramids, but rather -- find your lowest # of pyramid province and score 3 points per pyramid in that low province. Slight change. I think I like it.

The cards were not very friendly to me and we had a newbie winner. Success.

Cult of the Old Game #3 for me at the Gaming Hoopla. I kept it 4p to make it a little more forgiving and not quite as punishing with the turn order track. One of the players grabbed scholars early and surged out ahead. I thought we were all playing for 2nd, until the famine and tax/tribute events hit him hard. He knew it was coming, but thought he had a big enough lead. I eeked out a win. Great variability in this one with the 10 events, but so tough to come from behind. I want to try the expansion once.

Cult of the Old Game #2 at the Gaming Hoopla for me. Unfortunately, Notre Dame Cathedral has been in the news recently due to the tragic fire. Fortunately, we had a splendid 4p game with 3 newbies who all enjoyed it. Drafting, interesting helper card selections (especially with the bonus/extra A/B/C cards), quick rounds. A lot of gameplay in an hour or so. One player was able to get all 4 of the 4 VP travel tokens by traveling and then there was a helper card that scored him 16 points (4 points for each the same token). I did not see that coming. It was enough for a comfortable win.

-------------------------

Honorable mention = Cult of the Old Game #4 was The Princes of Florence . it was a hit at the Gaming Hoopla and it drew more, "man, I need to play that game" comments than anything else I ran. I think I could have filled an entire day of back to back Princes games similar to an evergreen title like Terraforming Mars or the new hotness Wingspan . whistle

My first and last playes had been Aug, 6th 2017 and of a friends copy. I bought a cheap copy on a fleamarket last November, but never got it played. Not sure, if it "counts", depending on that my own copy only dusted for 5 to 6 months.

51st State: Master Set
First play on Mar, 15th, 2017, now got to the table again Apr, 23th. Not sure, why I never came back to it, it's a fine engine builder. But when I recently found out that a gaming buddy had taged it "want to play" in his BGG collection, I told him, we should revisit it together.

By the way, "Age of Steam", which I undusted in March, got another two plays in April. Hopefully, this months games won't be "one and done for a while" as well!
