"Out of the Dust" is a term referring to games we play that we haven't played in awhile - typically a year or more. Sometimes games get a little dusty if we leave them on the shelf too long between plays - hence they are removed from "out of the dust" when we brush them off to play them again. Like other monthly Geeklists, the Out of the Dust Geeklist serves as a dedicated place for board gamers to post the games they played in the previous month - in this case, the dusty games we played again. The Out of the Dust Geeklist is open to anyone who logs their plays and has played a dusty game in the last month.

Posters to the Geeklist are encouraged to write something about the games they brought out of the dust this month. Why did the game get dusty? Why did you decide to dust it off? How does the game compare to how you remembered it? Are you likely to play it more often in the future? These are the questions that we’re particularly interested in examining in the Out of the Dust Geeklist.

Andy's handy tool will analyze a user's logged plays for a range of inputted dates and quickly identify any eligible "out of the dust" games. This tool also formats the results in handy BGG code that can conveniently be copy and pasted into a Geeklist entry! http://www.grimwold.org.uk/bgg/tools/dustyPlaysBGG.php

If you want to be notified each month when the Out of the Dust monthly Geeklist goes live, please subscribe to the Out of the Dust Subscription Geeklist

If you'd like to check out other fun monthly Geeklists, BaSL has a comprehensive list at his monthly Most Played Geeklist, the most recent iteration of which can be found as a link here: Your Most Played Game GeekLists - Announcement Thread

Aquadukt - Dust Level: 7 years - There are a handful of games in my collection that I've played before but I don't have any logged plays of because the last time I played them was before I started logging plays seven years ago. I've been gradually working my way through those and evaluating them to see if I want to keep them around or not. Aquadukt goes in the keeper pile. It's got that classic Euro feel of pasted-on theme with engaging and interesting gameplay. This was a hit at my monthly Obscure Bryce Game demo and we played it twice in a row. It might get dusty again but it's a quality game.

Francis Drake - Dust Level: 3 years, 7 months, 2 days - Brought this out at a friend's birthday game day with a group for which it was a dusty play for all of us. We all agreed this game holds up well and want to play it again soon. The road to select actions is so good, especially randomizing the tiles each round.

Starfighter - Dust Level: 3 years, 1 month, 15 days - Every so often I bring this out of the dust to try with someone new who inevitably doesn't care for it. I really like this game but I have yet to encounter anyone else who does. This play was the same old story with my opponent declaring at the conclusion of the game that they're okay never playing it again. I keep it around in the forlorn hope of someday finding an agreeable partner for it. Someday...

Cardline: Dinosaurs - Dust Level: 2 years, 10 months, 7 days - There's a lot of blind guessing in this iteration of Cardline, but it's fun with the right group. It worked well at the monthly Union Pacific Museum family night demo my sons and I host.

TransAmerica - Dust Level: 2 years, 8 months, 28 days - I brought this out of the dust at the same event as Cardline Dinosaurs. I believe the last time I played this was at a demo at the same location. I must have an ample rotation of games for this event. The family I taught it to this time really liked it and promised to look it up to acquire themselves later.

Great Western Trail - Dust Level: 2 years, 2 months, 16 days - This is a prime example of game that got dusty because I don't own a copy myself yet. I played it a couple of times when it first came out with a riend's copy, but not since. But I wanted to try the expansion and really enjoyed it. The expansion is really good - I was very impressed. In fact, it increases my wishlist priority for the game even more.

As usual, I'm reporting only on games that have at least 5 years of dust. And in May I played two games that met that standard with plenty of room to spare. Both were played at "Jeroen&BiancaCon", which met for three days at our house.

Formula Dé - 1 play
First Published 1991

I had played this game before I started recording plays in 2002, but I've only played it three times since: in 2002, in 2004, and this year. It's one of the relatively few race games I enjoy, but it isn't right there at the top, and it takes a bit of work to teach new people, so I often opt for a simpler game, like Daytona 500 or Snow Tails. I'm not sure why I think of this game as more difficult to learn, but for some reason I do.

Mississippi Queen - 1 play
First Published 1997
13 years, 9 months, 3 days
Current Rating -  7

This game won SdJ. I suspect it might have been too complex for the SdJ if it came out in 2019. But it's an enjoyable race game that has rules that stick in your head for some reason, so that you never seem to need to look them up.

By adding this item, I'm kinda cheating. Or not. On two levels.

We recently moved, and Shenomad and I spent yesterday hanging light fixtures and shelves. So everything is under a fine layer of dust. But that's not why I'm posting here.

When we were teens, my brother the card player taught us this silly family game. He was a master, hiding cards almost everywhere about his person and the table on his way to victory. He even hid cards on other players, so subtle was he.

In the move to the new house, a Bicycle deck was discovered, and my kids--raised on designer games--were enthralled by the colours and symbols of a game with which so many games could be played. So I taught them Cheat. Good fun, and there's no way I've played it in at least 20 years.

Looks like I've managed to play 4 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Favor of the Pharaoh -- (1 this month; 1 play 40 months ago) _5_
(images by W Eric Martin & toulouse)

I didn't like this the first time out; and I'm afraid this play wasn't any better. My outcome was distinctly different: but winning (on account of rolling well) was no better than losing (on account of rolling poorly.)

I found it hard to pretend that the decisions were interesting, too. So: probably something I'll try to avoid for at least another four years.

Santiago -- (1 this month; 5 plays 30 months ago) _7⅔_
(images by deweller & kilroy_locke)

I find this one quite charming. And that (again) whether or not things go well for me. This particular play may have been let down (ever so slightly) by a bit of silly groupthink; but it redeemed itself in the end with a cool finish.

あやつり殺人事件 Ayatsuri satsujin jiken 'Puppet Murder' -- (1 this month; 9 plays 27 months ago) _7⅓_

Short, stupid (in the best sense), and brutal. One takes the Citadels auction with a set of eight characters that all want only to kill their peers, and goes for it. The game is constrained to end relatively quickly (a distinct upgrade, in my opinion, to a few of the more interminable Citadels games I've played) and has been well-enjoyed whenever it's managed to lurch into play.

Boggle -- (1 this month; 10++ plays 25 months ago) _7_
(images by Gambiteer & IronMoss)

We normally play Super Big Boggle - the 6x6 grid. So this was on the request of daughter #1, who wondered if she'd prefer the smaller grid. She didn't. And neither did any of the rest of us.

I think we'll go back to playing one of the larger variants.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Lunch@Work folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

The air was thick with dust this month:

600 - 2 plays
First Published 1990
16 years, 6 months, 29 days

600, found in Dice Games Properly Explained, is Reiner Knizia's souped-up version of Yahtzee. Here's the thing: I grew up preferring Kismet to Yahtzee– I liked the colored pips, and always heeded the swami's good advice to "counter luck with finesse."

Bazaar - 1 play
First Published 1967
10 years, 3 months, 26 days
Current Rating -  6

This game is a bit brain-burny and somewhat humbling. No wonder it's been 10 years!

Babuschka - 1 play
First Published 1982
7 years, 11 months, 9 days
Current Rating -  6

Chinese Checkers-like but with nesting dolls, a nice twist. The littlest dolls need to get to the finish line first but they are easily detained by your opponent's bigger dolls so some real thinking and tension belies the charming surface.

Corsari - 1 play
First Published 2003
7 years, 9 months, 4 days
Current Rating -  6

We have the Corsari version of this game, making it good piratey fun.

Xe Queo! - 1 play
First Published 1998
4 years, 2 months, 26 days
Current Rating -  8

I find the bluff/counter bluff aspect of this game exhausting. It lasts all of 10 minutes but I'll rarely play twice in a row.

Patchwork - 2 plays
First Published 2014
4 years, 3 months, 10 days
Current Rating -  6

There's really no excuse for letting four years go by here. It's a clever game, but I find the puzzling a bit easy.

Had this game until 2014 and played it only twice. Then suddenly a friend stood at my doorstep with Sekigahara in his backpack. I’m more or less out of wargames but I have to admit that I enjoyed the thrill, while also annoyed at myself for not overseeing consequences of rules and victory conditions. I did pretty well but on hindsight screwed up in the very first turn. My opponent screwed up several situations, too, so kudos to him, and gratitude for bringing this game along!
I’d play it again, I don’t think that will happen anytime soon though.
Rating remains 7

Red 7 - 5 plays

I’ve been buying a couple of card games and remembered that Red 7 was fun, but also too luck dependent. A quick check at my geek buddies notes taught me that the game comes alive when playing by the advanced rules, and so it did. I see many more plays coming in the near future.

Yikes! This box was stuck to the shelf it had been there so long. Waiting for game night proper to start, a friend said "What's Fluxx?" and a play was had. It was a perfectly fine game to play while chatting and waiting for others to arrive, some of which were able to jump right into the existing game, so it's got that going for it.

Race for the Galaxy - 1 play
First Published 2007

I used to give Race a real had time for being so difficult for new gamers to get into and for the complex iconography, so it got dusty. But I really like this style of tableau building card game AND it is a meatier step up from San Juan, which I had tired of playing anyway. I really enjoy space themes and will try to keep this one in a semi-regular rotation.

Jet Set - 1 play
First Published 2008
3 years, 0 months, 14 days
Current Rating -  7.5
Jet Set is easily the next step up from Ticket To Ride's popular gateway friendly game play. Jet Set is about building routes to score points by purchasing links between cities and then claiming increasingly longer and more valuable route cards. The ownership of routes means that other players will occasionally pay you to use your routes and vice versa. I like the European city map board and cards, but the money and other components were of lower quality. While this game is solid, others in my group didn't find it super exciting to play and it will probably gather dust once more.

I played The Grizzled at a local boardgame meet up I used to attend (way too busy now with life in general). A friend gave it to me for my birthday a few months ago and it sat on the shelf until the Little Fish pushed to play. I was unsure how this would go given the theme but it worked well and we had some very useful conversations about war afterwards.

Wow, this was a long time collecting dust. I had no recollection of the game whatsoever, but dimly remembered it was good. I think?
So we pulled this out to see how it stood up after all these years and - lo and behold - we enjoyed it quite a bit. The way you draft ressources is quite uniqe and makes for tense decisions. The actions are clear and the turn counter is still overproduced . Shame it sat on our shelf for so long, I'm glad we broke this out again!

Another one I couldn't remember much about. My partner was even worse, he remembered nothing at all, except that he thought he somewhat liked it when we played it that one time... So no matter what was last time, we had fun this time around. Its frantic dice chucking and hurling spells is neat and while I don't think it's the best game evar, it deserves to be played every now and then. Shame there were never any expansions with new Mages, because I guess it never really took off .

We more or less bought this one on a whim a few years back without knowing too much about it. We played it once and then forgot about it. So now we played again and - yeah, I think we'll forget about it again. Much too random for our taste and boring to boot. Up for sale.

The table hog of this game prevented it from coming out after our first try. But now that we have a bigger gaming table, it was no problem at all to put it on the table! And I'm glad we did, because I love this game and so does my partner. It's probably the most "conventional" of the Mindclash games in its mechanics, but it looks and feels great and there are a lot of meaningful decisions to be made on your turn. I'm glad we played again and hopefully it doesn't take us another 2 years to get it back to the table!

This is a clear case of "we don't own this" and we have one member of our gaming group who doesn't like Cthulhu stuff, so it has limited opportunity to show up. It did show up this month, though and although we lost the scenario (I don't think we were far away from winning, mind you!), everyone had fun playing.

I had forgotten about this game that my son brought with him on a recent visit. I had won the previous two plays, but this time he steamrolled me 20-5! But still, it’s a blast. Lots of game in a little box.

It’s an interesting month when you have more dusty games than new games. 4 remarkable experiences.

One of my students challenged me to a game of chess when I used chess and go as examples in class. It was a close and interesting match.

Chess - 1 play

Every time the next game hits the table, it’s a trip to middle earth. This time we played until 4AM, and saw a military shadow victory.

The next one was my second play of GWT. I won after a journey with the least cows of all.

Great Western Trail - 1 play

The last one was the second play of ascendancy. I still think the mapbuilding is great. I played Romulan and ended last. Klingons won.

 8   Agricola x3 (Dust Level: 6 years, 11 months)

For at least the past few years, I'd been looking at my copy of Agricola and thinking it's long over due for a play. But even after starting to track my h-index of played games and discovering it was sitting just under the threshold (and lift it by one), I still didn't pull Agricola from the shelf. This month, it finally hit the table.

I was disappointed after the first play, warmed a bit to it after play number two. And have found myself thinking about it on and off since play number three. In fact, I played it a couple times solo on the iPad out of curiousity.

I remain a bit conflicted over the game. Generally, I enjoy punishing games and am not annoyed by food requirements (or other penalties). But for some reason, I now find it somewhat irritating in Agricola in that it distracts from a single-minded pursuit of one's strategy. In short, I know longer want to "waste" actions (or thought on how) to produce food (or create an engine that integrates it into my strategy as a by-product).

 7   1880: China x1 (Dust Level: 4 years, 8 months)

It took an old gaming friend now living in Toronto to get 1880: China onto the table after over four years. This 18xx has some interesting "overlays" such as foreign investors and stock rounds being triggered mid-operating round by train purchases rather than at the end of a complete operating round.

I think I could enjoy this game more with repeated plays, but as it is, I find it one of the more frustrating 18xx thanks to the differences between it an more standard fare like 1830 and 1889.

Metropolys is great and I'm as surprised to see I hadn't played it for six years as I was surprised to see I played it more than ten times before. It's certainly not everyone's cup of tea but I really like it. However I think I prefer the advanced rules over the basic rules now.

One of my favorites gets a replay at last - and it took more than 3 years since the last play? It's a scandal. Of course it's still great.

I really like this game but have trouble teaching. So while I feel it's not very complicated others do (after me trying to explain it)

So it will probably collect some dust again. Three of us ended within 1 point of each other with the forth just 3 pints behind.

For me an decent role selection/area majority game.

I really enjoy 1st edition more. But this second play was a bit better then the first. I understand why they made the changes. But didn't think they were needed.

Almost won but didn't get the right card draw on my last turn.

Probably should be on this lust. But it is because I only log FtF plays. Lots of plays on Yucata. But I do think Rtf play is so different then on-line play.

My favourite heavy Euro which has a fair few moving parts, but they mesh together really well. Played with the Cooked Books for the first time, but no-one used it, despite someone specialising in the Bookkeeping track. I was going to go Stocks, but found Diamonds left open by another player, so took the opportunity to revisit the simplest of the strategies. Won by a fair margin: Diamonds bt Books bt Stocks.

This has never been anywhere near as 'hilarious' as the cover claims (shock, I know), and for some reason the people I play with seem to find it really hard being the Question-asker for the round (it's simple, I know). However, occasional laughs were had. Probably time to move it on.

I've played my all-time favorite game at least once a year since acquiring it but it has been a while since playing with the Western map which is why I chose it for my annual birthday game day. Like so many of my multi-player favorites, I just don't get to play them as often as I would like.

Power Grid: Northern Europe/United Kingdom & Ireland(2012) - 1 play[/b]

Same goes for Power Grid. It too is a long time, all-time favorite for which I have multiple expansion maps that I have yet to play and few opportunities to do so. I'm making progress... one play at a time, one year at a time.

meeple Keep playing...

Zombies!!!
Dust level: 4 years, 1 month, 9 days
I never really liked this game very much -- got rid of my copy a couple years ago -- but as faculty advisor to a board game club, I let the students choose the game they want to play, and ZOMBIES!!! is the game they wanted to play, so I was in. Playing a game with people who enjoy it makes for a fun time, even if the game they're playing isn't great.

Loop Inc.
Dust level: 3 years, 3 months, 13 days
I really like this one but it doesn't get much play because my wife doesn't like it. I ought to bring it out to game night some more.

The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus
Dust level: 1 year, 2 months, 23 days
We have this game because my son really likes it, so he will often request it when a specific couple comes over.

Ghost Stories
Dust level: 1 year, 1 month, 2 days
I love this game! It's so hard and has so many good/gritty choices. We squeaked out a win, just barely. Dang Wu-Fang!
