Held on Saturday November 2nd in the Scout Hut, Saltdean (near Brighton), in the south of England. Superbly organised by Dick. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/user/Crabro

This is, unsurprisingly, the fourth such event - but the first one I have been to as I've not been back into boardgaming that long.

This is a GeekList to allow folks to post up their experiences and impressions of the games they played.

If this then tempts anyone else to come along next time, then my job is done!

The first game I played on the day. This was a new one for me and I was keen to play it considering it's high rating here on the Geek and the eagerness of some of the other attendees (most of the ones who I actually knew already!) to play it.

I wasn't disappointed in this game. It took us noobs a while to get to grips with the rules and we were distracted by new games being delivered (Huge thanks to Boardgameclub.co.uk for bringing me a load of new swag to have to get past the Mrs!) so the game took a fair bit longer to finish than we had hoped.

I really liked the dice tower as a battle resolution mechanism. At the end of the game, I found 6 of my own army cubes inside it, so that alone reveals the potential for someone to get a real battering and the element of doubt that can go in to any attacks being made!

This was a very close game, 4 players out of 5 were seperated by only 3 victory points, the win being decided by tiebreaker.

A very encouraging start to the day!

Not a game I played, rather a game I had preordered from the aforementioned Boardgameclub guys. I liked their angle on things - I had to say "hey hon, I'm off to play boardgames all day, seeya in the early hours!" accompanied by appropriate pre-emptiv brownie point earning, whereas they could say "I'm off to sell hundreds of quids worth of games - seeya later!" before dishing out the swag and then hanging around to play as many games as possible. Nice one!

Yep, got this too. I'd decided that it was time to get Catan settled before the design change came in and I ended up buying sets that didn't match each other somewhere.

After the hefty wargamish type experience of fighting over Japan, we went for something completely different next...

A rucking and a rutting we went in Antler Island!

The stags look great, superly over produced relative to the rest of the game, but a lot of folks passing by had to have a look at them, so they definitely work. Great comedy looks on their faces too.

The doeples look like doeples and the board layout is simple and elegant enough to make the game one worthy of more thought thatn you would first think.

This was a four player game and ended up as a race between the 2 of us who had won a fight to cross the rutting score finish line.

I was pipped at the post by Mike roaring from the highpoint of the island and attracting herds of doeples towards him and away from me!

A heavyweight game! Mainly due to the metal playing peices and the real rock used as minerals that need to be collected. Excellent! This is countered by the tiny plastic specks which you use to tag the owner of each vehicle on the board. They look good on the tanks and crabs though.

Mike and I started playing this and were joined just in time by Tony.

I thought that this was a good game, but I was not clear enough on the rules and I'd forgotten a few things. This hampered me a little bit as my strategy went completely off the rails towards the end! The others managed to get most of their units back to their command centres before take-off, but loads of my tanks and boats were still out on the map.

This reminded me a bit of Starcraft and I'd not be surprised to learn that this game was some part the inspiration for that computer game.

After werewolf, the zombies.

I really like this game, it's a dicefest for sure, but the games I have played so far have tended to swing from one way to the other so you're never quite sure who's gonna win!

5 of us played the basic "Die Zombies Die!" scenario. Tony's zombies had only lost one Z in the first few turns and only 5 by turn 8. most of these were done in by Ron's preacher. Most have been the Hand of God.

However, we'd used the flare gun a couple of times by then and Al had managed to get Johnny into the hanger with "Heroic resolve" and he proved to be quite unstoppable from then on. Mike's Sherrif got trapped outside and my Jake couldn't quite save him before he succumbed - mainly cos my shotgun rolls were useless! The Sherrif hung in there a while tho and was a great zombie attractor! The preacher suplied me with gun refills a couple of times though in return for me powering him up with faith early on. Johnny survived almost certain death countless times and zombies were dropping like flies all over that aircraft hanger.

In the end I managed to chainsaw up the zombies who'd seen off the Sherrif and finally got the shotgun working to take out the 15th zombie with a whole turn to spare!

By this time it was after midnight and we were all pretty worn out!

This was the surprise of the day. Late in the evening a stranger walked into the hut, and naturally I went for a chat.

It turned out that he was
a) a neighbour to the Scout Hut that the event was being held in, and
b) a games inventor!

He asked if we would like to play-test his new game, which he had produced in small quantities, and a few minutes later he dropped a copy in.

Classed as a family abstract, it uses unique 8 sided dice to determine each player's move, although it is possible to choose which combination of die/dice to use for maximum effect.

I settled down to a two-player with SkiBoy and we soon discovered that the rules, and possibly the game, still needed some work. I will be adding the game and photos to the database and will edit this post at a later date.

My first game of the day. I bought this at Essen as I like the theme and of course it's by Andreas Seyfarth. Basicly you roll dice to aquire all the bits you need to build an airship. At first it was a bit easy to aquire the bits you needed but as the game went on I realised that you have to plan your expansion fairly carefully. Everyone has chits that you can add to your dice throws which help to even things out a bit. Nice little game.
