This was my third trip to Dallas for BGG.con, and I had a full plate of stuff I wanted to do. Last year my attempt at getting prototypes played/noticed wasn't very successful, so I tried a little harder this year. As a result, I didn't play quite as many of the new Essen releases, but I did manage to fill out the 4 top priority slots on my Dance Card. I also got to hang out with a lot of my friends from across the country, including one of my best friends for 25 years who now lives in Dallas and has 2 kids!

Here's my account of the experience, in Geeklist form... broken up day by day.

The night before leaving for the con (which is actually *2* nights before the con officially began), I had Bo (boyan), John (hederj), and Eric (blueaheart) over to play a new prototype called Rodeo Drive. We played a 4 player game, then John left and the remaining 3 of us played a 3 player game with a different scoring system to try that out. Then Eric left and Bo and I talked about the game for quite some time. After Bo left, I couldn't sleep. Maybe I was getting antsy because I was leaving at 8 in the morning for Dallas... or I thought I was. To get to the airport on time I had set my alarm for 5:45am. By the time I fell asleep it was about 4:00am, and then I didn't hear the alarm or something, because when I woke up it was 8:30 and I'd already missed my flight!

I rushed to the airport and managed to make it just in time to get on the next flight, so I'd only arrive 4 hours late, not 10 or so!

Fortunately, Brian was able to work his schedule around so he could still pick me up, and when we got to the hotel Winton (Hector_Vortac) and Simon (acetate3), my roomates for the convention, had also just arrived. We got checked in and dropped all our stuff off in the room and then headed out to find some dinner. Since Brian had a car we wanted to eat something that wasn't the Denny's across the street.

The hotel front desk gave Brian directions to some kind of 'restaurant row', and we drove off in search of that. The lady had said it was 5 minutes away. After 15 minutes of driving we decided she must not have known what she was talking about, so we turned around and went to where Brian (who lives in Dallas) suspected there'd be food. We found some restaurants and decided on Chili's.

During dinner we were talking about Puerto Rico, because Winton wanted to play a speed game of PR and videotape it for YouTube. Brian isn't really a gamer, and so didn't know what Puerto Rico was, so I told him: Puerto Rico is generally considered the best multiplayer strategy game... ever. He said that in that case, he'd like to play it. So when we got back to the hotel we decided to look for a copy. We didn't have to look far, in an area by the restaurant there were some tables and some gamers, one of which had a copy of PR beside him. I asked if we could play it and he said that would be fine, so the 4 of us sat down for a game. As we were setting up, Snowden Wyatt (snowman882) arrived after his long haul driving from Tucson, so I invited him into the game.

Winton and I have played plenty of Puerto Rico, but Simon and Snowden have not, and of course Brian was a complete newbie. I'll post a session report about it, but the short version is that Winton id something unusual (and according to some, ill advised), and it almost paid off, but he ended up in second, with me winning, Snowden and Brian tied for third, and Simon coming in last. I could tell that by the End Brian had figured out what he wanted to be doing, so that was good.

After Puerto Rico, Brian went home, and I went to find the L.A. contingent and try to help Derk and Aldie set up. When I asked Derk what needed doing, he said they had everything just about covered. Maybe if I'd not missed my plane I could have been more helpful, but instead I just made the joke comment "Perfect, I got here just in time to offer to help, but not have to do anything!"

Evidently my L.A. friends were doing all the helping, so I said "hi" to Steph (songlian) and Chris (fnord23). After they were done helping Derk and Aldie, I asked Steph if she'd like to try Rodeo Drive. I know she's a big fan of Liar's Dice, and the auctions in Rodeo Drive are based on the mechanic in Liar's Dice. Ravindra (snoozefest) and May Prashad were walking by so I asked if they wanted to join us as well. Aldie was trying to get his Xbox going to set up Guitar Hero, and I knew we'd lose Steph's attention as soon as that happened, so I suggested we just play a couple of rounds and then call it quits - just to see how the mechanics went.

When we stopped, the women were ahead in scoring, so Steph proclaimed "women must be better at Liar's Dice!"

My last game of the evening (before Guitar Hero) was Würfel Bingo with Nikki from L.A. and Simon. It was a fun little game, and I thought I was doing really badly, but I ended up winning.

Then I joined Steph and everybody else to play Guitar Hero 3 for a while. I think I got to sleep around 4 or 5am.
