My second list is much like the first - a presentation of games I have been adding to BGG from my collection of Strategy and Wargames from the 1880s to the 1950s.

This set is a mix of extremely rare (some I have seen once in 10+ years of collecting) and others that have interesting and deep game play. Most are new to BGG but a few were already present in the database.

I hope you enjoy this set....

As with the first time I thought I would put a couple of games up that aren't complete but are very rare, very old, and have an interesting presentation.

Miltry is a box with game pieces (wooden blocks with flags from the nations involved in WWI). The fact that all the countries are included except the USA points to a map of all of Europe and a date from early in the war.

My copy includes a small strategy guide that hints at point to point game play with support and differences in game play inherent in the position of the point on the board. I look for this board weekly and would love to see how this game plays.

This game is one of the first strategy/war games created by Parker Brothers (1895).

Its a simple game mechanic used by many games before and after but the look of the box cover and game board is amazing (my copy is damaged but the detail and look still pops).

One thing I like is the fact that the game board shows this game has been played to death. Thought I would put it up because of its place in history.

I put this one up for the same reasons as Hold the Fort, its gotta be the first game ever done on the Boer War. The trademark is consistent with other games I have from Australia but I can't verify that.

The mechanic was old when the game was made its still a great look....

Extremely rare (I was amazed to see this game at auction and haven't seen a copy since) and with some mechanics that foreshadow a lot of things to come.

One of the best box tops ever. The game has a fair amount of choice, pick to control a fighter or bomber (different missions based on the choice), card driven game play, a little cockpit to track turns and altitude, Nazi planes to attack, and designed by a WWI aviator.

This game has it all, if the map was a little more interesting this game would top my favorites.

Dennis Wheatley's Invasion is interesting on many levels. First you can see the whimsy of the designer (a well know British writer) in the map. Towns named Damnithall, Dunderhead, Slap, (next to) Tickle, makes it seem like he had fun making the game.

Next the rules are more detailed than just about any wargame before the modern era. He includes stacking, reserves, naval interdiction of land units, cooperative play for allies and betting (which is interesting since he says the winnings ought to go in the charity box, "as no country ever makes anything out of war").

There are some overly simplistic concepts (rolling double 6s allows for immediate conquest of 3 fortified spots for example) but overall Invasion ranks very high on the list of the most advanced war/strategy games of what I would call the golden era (if you liken it to the way comic collectors see the history of comics).

Wheatley's second game, Blockade's map is not as interesting as the first, the look is much simpler and drier than Invasion.

The rules are tighter than his Invasion game and don't include any randomness. The idea of stacking remains (a merchant can stack with a naval force to create a convoy) and the choices include submarine and air attacks along with the naval maneuvers.

The combat is interesting in that it builds in attacker losses in every battle. Haven't tried this one yet but I expect it will deliver some strong game play.

Possibly the closest to modern style war gaming of my entire collection.

All this game needed was a better looking map. The game has 5 classes of lead miniatures and a Dictator to kill....

Units move in specific patterns (a mix of chess and stratego) and combat is both ranged and close up.

Lots of options and interesting play but doesn't have the draw of games with a higher look.

Attack has the map that Invasion should have had and the designer uses terrain in the game play. Unfortunately the game suffers from not having the lead miniatures and from much simpler rules than Invasion for example.

Since both Attack and Invasion were made by the same company I assume there was an edition that had lead but I have never seen it.

I like the presence of the ammo dump and camp, its makes for some varied game play but again this is a variation on the chess movement/capture system.

Another one that I haven't tried but the picture says it all. You get your units attached to pins and you get to stick them in the game board, awesome....

Players get 10 movement points a turn and each class of ship moves a set number (Subs are 1, Battleships are 2, Cruisers are 3, Destroyers are 4).

Moving onto a point with an enemy causes an engagement.

And then there is the teetotem which is used to determine who scores a hit. Subs fight as if they were the same as the enemy.

The miniature lead flats get me every time.

Sea Raid has little metal bouys to aid navigation, mines and a ton of different classes of ships.

Attacking an enemy happens when friendly units move onto a spot with enemy units (there is no limit to stacking on a dot). To fight, players add up the values of each fleet (Destroyers = 1, Cruisers = 2 & Battleships = 3 combat points). The fleet with the lowest value must lose its best unit.

Additional factors include forts, obstacles (shoals & straits) and high speed stretches.

Seems like naval and air games of the period had the most interesting game play.

The next two are here based on rarity, they don't have the most interesting boards or mechanics but they are pretty much one of a kind games.

Warzon has lots of units that go down 3 different tracks earning money and killing units.

Haven't tried this one and its low on the list so its going to be a while.

Another game that surprised me when I saw it at auction, another one of a kind. This one has more interesting play than Warzon.

The game has bidding, attacks and bonuses related to taking over regions with armies. No one really loses armies, they just retreat but there are several phases of play that culminate in a final conquest phase.

I will be giving this one a few plays to see how balanced it is.

Eagle Air-to-Air Combat Game.

A German wargame that is well known to BGG and has deeper game play than most. Not sure why its currently dated 1935, my copy says 1941...

The game has bombers, fighters, flak and naval units. Combat can be air-to-air, air-to-ground (against flak and naval units) and bombing. Bomber can call out Fighter protection.

The map is detailed and interesting. One of my favorites from the period.

Eagle Air Defense game.

Another WWII German game that has many of the same features as the previous. The map is strong and the play is deep with fighters, bombers and a special die to determine bombing effects and AA damage.

Players move their bombers down set paths and try to destroy the enemy economic and military targets. Different scores based on the level of damage (determined by die roll) give different scores and the winner has the highest score.

Lots of randomness but still interesting to play.

The last of this list and another one that already existed on BGG. I was lucky enough to get an unpunched version of Air Combat Trainer and the 3D look of the board and pieces really makes it stand out.

The game play is driven by spinner and players can high level bomb, dive bomb, change formations, and attack each other.

The game play is a bit random but offers a different look at aerial combat.
