A geeklist to log what we got up to in and around the "Pasteboard and Plastic V" gaming event on Saturday 1st March 2008 at the Scout hut in Saltdean (Brighton, UK)

This is a follow on from my only other Geeklist to date, covering P&P 4! http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/25954

As a tribute to all the recent Geeklists about buying new games, opening new games, smelling new games, I'm scoring my new acquisitions accordingly (relative to other games I have).

Thanks to everyone I bought games from or played games with - and special thanks to Dick for organising another successful, smooth running event.

I'm interested to see what the other attendees thought, so add your games or comments accordingly if you would be so kind. Ta!

The next event is PasteBoard & Plastic VI July 12, 2008.

Let's start this off with some of the games I ordered to be delivered on the day by the guys from www.boardgameclub.co.uk - they've got superbly competitive pricing, plus they'll deliver to the event for free and then hang around to play the games with you. You can't get better than that.

Actually, that's not true. You can get better. I found a rolled up 20 pound note next to my car this morning (not mine). So technically I pretty much got this game for nowt.

I've played this and enjoyed it, I figured that I'll be able to play it more often if I actually own it!

Another Boardgameclub delivery. The daddy of BGG games - ID number 1. I've only played this once and it's definitely an epic, even the Boardgameswithscott review is an epic

With some cons I plan to go to and some friends who can play games all day, I reckon I can get this on the table a few times. Yeah, it's the new version, but I'll handle that.

Just the basic game, I might steer clear of the million or so expansions for this, but it's cheap, it's quick and simple to play, it may well snag some none gamers occasionally, so it had to be one for the collection. After all, you can't be a proper geek if you don't own many games. If you were guessing I bought this as well today, you'd be right. In a minute, I might tell you about some games I actually played today.

This was my first game of the day. A Martin Wallace game with a good reputation, it was something I had wanted to play for a while and as soon as this got mentioned, I was right up for it.

This was a 4 player attempt and it took me a while to get in to the swing of things. The canal phase was my learning curve, so I was lagging behind after the first scoring. I was a lot better in the rail phase and ended up a good second. I was quite happy with that, as the winner had played before!

I found that you have to be pretty flexible in this game. I had a definite strategy in mind a number of times, only to find it being adopted by a player going before me quite a lot! There are some obvious moves to make at times (putting a link in to run between two towns which have grown recently for instance) but that's the chance you take when you leave links in to a place you're developing industry in.

There's a good number of strageies to try in this game and I reckon that this will make it worth a good few plays in future.

In my opinon, at this point, Brass deserves it's good reputation. I will want to play this again before I forget things, so I can apply what I know from the start.

Just after I'd sorted my boardgameclub order, I realised that the "Railroad Tycoon expansion that can't mention Railroad Tycoon" had been released, so back we go and place order number 2. I did this last time as well, so the guys are well used to my idiocy.

I got into the original RRT late enough not to have a problem with warping boards, funky colours and other issues, but that board is pretty big! This is smaller, so again, should get the game more table time. Plus I hope to hide this in the original box. Safe!

At least 3 of us at Pasteboard and Plastic 5 had this snagged by the end of the day, so it's seemingly a popular expansion. As we were all buying it, we just had to play it. This was thus the second agame I played in the day.

My base set and someones expansion made up the game. Although I was rubbish, the game played well. We had a huge wealth of railway game playing experience (and me) around the table in a 5 player game. Everyone liked the new cards, everyone liked the new rules, the 2 role cards and pick one is good. The major lines on the board for all to take if they can is great. The tunnel engineer cards are good. The layout of the cities on the board is good - and that board is a bit smaller and more manageable. Still not a good colour difference between blue and purple though, which was pretty much our only gripe on the whole game.

There were a few things that I had had on my wishlist for a while that were showing up as out of stock with only a week or so to go before the big day, so whilst I was buying Rails of Europe, I got this too.

This is a bit of a shot in the dark game, I've never played it, seen it played or even seen it. I've heard folks enthuse about it though and having read through some reviews etc. here, I thought why not. Again, I like the theme and as I Brit myself, I guess that almost justifies the purchase. To me at least. My better half, she'll probably think differently!

This was the third game I played today. A five player game with the boardgame club guys and a couple of the chaps I only see at the PasteBoard and Plastic event, so that was good in itself.

We all thought that this game was put together really well, it actually uses the box as part of the game board, which was a new one on me and works really well. I had a good time playing this and was raking in the cash early on with some throne and obelisk building. I got a few of the "naughty boy" tokens as I went along and then we found about a rule where the tokens marked on cards in your hand counted against you at the game end. Oh dear. Some judiciuos placing of the jigsaw puzzle bits by others meant I didn't have enough sanctuaries to hide all my tokens in and when the game ended I was fed to the crocodiles, rather than finishing in second.

Another game from Valley Games, courtesy of the boardgameclub guys. This is another game that I'll get to play more if I own it. I like the theme and there's some subtlety in the pricing strategies to get to grips with.

I'd played this once before and it came out again today as my 4th game of the day. By this stage it was getting into the evening wind down phase, so folks wanted some lighter games than this one, but we managed to start up a 3 player game none the less. I remembered a few of the rules, but still was not comfortable with the economic balance required.

We had a break in the middle of this to play the next game on the list and then we had a player substitution as well, which made things a bit tricky! This needs more table time before I can get to grips with it. this time I think we went too much on buildings early on, so we didn;t have enough cash to get the economy running properly and bids for container loads at the island were low. This then forced people to but the containers for themselves and money went out of the game. Not good!

Yep, this gets done every time. It's traditional. It's traditional that I mention that this is traditional now too.

We got through 3 quick games of werewolf, dropping other games for it temporarily, so we could get to play it before the youngest player at the event had to depart. This was the 5th game I played.

I played as villager (hung at the last for the werewolves win) then gamesmaster (I really had to fight not to join in too much or give things away, I think I managed that just about) and finally as werewolf. In this one I was getting set up for the lynching, but Ron, my werewolf buddy, was far from suspicion, so he voted for me to die too. We ended up with the win then, as we'd managed to turn the villagers on themselves. Mwahahahaha.

This was the 6th and last game of the day. The hardcore 5 of us left at the end had a couple of goes at this before we had to pack away the tables and chairs and do that last bit of washing up!

This is a card game which allows you to go back and forth in time and change events, create and fix paradoxes, grab artifacts and so on, whilst presenting you a number of ways to win. Each player has a personal mission linked to their character, a set of artifacts to collect or can build their hand up to ten cards. Any of these get you the win. The very last game of the day was a close call, with a couple of the others ready to win on their turn, but I pipped them to the post (which was nice).

That's enough new games now Dave eh? Well, maybe not. I found a few I liked on ebay and all from the same seller. It'd be rude not to.

Just got back from the event to find a note from the Royal Mail telling me they missed me when delivering a parcel, so on a technicality, I'm gonna extend this list by the 3 games that I know I've got waiting for me at the local sorting office.

This is a bit of a departure for me, I don't own too many games of this style, but that's good! Another niche catered for. I have to say that I have bought this one pretty much sight unseen as well. You Geeks aren't usually that wrong though, he says hopefully. Looking forward to playing this one. This is becoming a bit of a Valley Games love-in isn't it? Good job their e-commerce site's down then, so I can't go mad and preorder Republic of Rome!

See, this is what I was after all along! Those other games are only being bought cos I got distracted whilst looking for Shogun and it's fancy dice tower. I really like this game, even though there's a chance that you can be totally wiped out of the running by a pretty random event if you're faced with a huge rice famine at the end of year 1. Not that such a thing has happened to me - not more than once anyway. This game is also popular with a few of my regular gaming buddies, so it'll see some action.

In the end I wasn't too gutted about not getting hold of this before todays extravaganza, as we'd just had a game of Shogun on Tuesday.

So, Now I've opened this, here we go..

I don't own any co-op games yet, so this is a somewhat cheaper, faster-to-play alternative to Arkham Horror. See, justifying another purchase to Mrs BFD - you should have seen what I WAS going to buy, hon.

I play with a regular group of folks who all own quite a few games, but no-one I know owns this yet - this is a 2008 release, so no surprises there. It's nice to be able to take a game along to our regular meeting that no-one else actually owns, so that's another reason for me buying this. Plus it's been the most popular game of the day on the Geek for the best part of a week now (I'm such a sucker!) and it's pretty cheap too. Not that I'm a tight git, but when you've just bought 9 games, you have to consider such things.

From what I have seen up to now, this is another game with a strong theme and the co-op aspect will make a difference from the usual stuff I play with my regular Tuesday night group. Sadly, this didn't arrive in time for P&P V so I couldn't unleash the somewhat worrying smell this box is said to give off on my fellow gamers this afternoon. Gutted!

So sorry Alister, we didn't get to play this one today, but it'll be turning up on Tuesdays.

**Edit** It's finally arrived...

My first game of this well known Ragnar Brothers classic. Unfortunately for me it scratched no itches, and although I can appreciate it is a fine, fun game, it is one that I will not be rushing to add to my collection!

I wasn't expecting to play this one before I arrived, but as I walked through the door, there it was set out in all its translucent glory.
After an hour of die-rolling-dragon-zapping-fungoid-squashing-fun, Helen claimed the final victory points.

If I learnt anything at PnP5 - it's the value of battle-back (oh..and how to handle accusations of being a werewolf).

Pete and I played two games of this, and I could have played a stack more, had the day not been drawing to a close. Despite having no shelf space left for games, I'm pretty sure I could squeeze this slim little volume and a few of its extensions in somewhere.

I was idling around refereeing a couple of guys playing on my copy of C&C: Ancients (who were new to the game), when Steve invited me to join him and Gary in this abstract.

Now normally I wouldn't say I was one for the abstract. Sure, I appreciate the challenge is there as much - if not more so - than other games, but I do like a good solid, visible theme. But having heard some good reports from others of my regular Wednesday group who had played this recently, I was more than happy to give it a go.

An I'm glad I did. It really is a neat little game. As with the best strategy games, the rules are very simple, but the thinking you have to do to win can be devilishly hard. I really like the way the game feels really quite cramped at the start, but just opens up more and more as time goes on, so pretty soon you have to be looking as far as the other side of the board to check for anyone who may be able to travel right across and nab you on their turn. One I am seriously considering securing a copy of.

Oh - and Steve wiped the floor with both of us. This is not a new sensation for me!

I got chatting with Helen over dinner, and she mentioned that she regularly brought this to conventions, but had never yet managed to play it.

I have enjoyed playing (so much so that I've subsequently bought) a fair few Martin Wallace games (though oddly not Age of Steam!), so was happy to agree to a game with her and Tom.

I'm not sure any of us were really paying attention to the rules as much as we should have been when setting up, so they had to be re-read a bit in the first round, but subsequent rounds flowed much more smoothly, and the game is actually a relatively light one for Mr Wallace I'd say. Not that it didn't still have the need to really be thinking about what you were doing and watching what other players were doing.

The game also had a couple of things that I have really come to associate with Martin Wallace games (other than Age of Steam); a) a really quite tight finish in the VPs at the end; and b) the rather counter-intuitive mechanism of a player spending their resources to buy into multiple - and often competing - on-board factions.

I was very impressed with the way Tom got to grips with the game and made some good plays. The lad done good, but I pipped him by just a few points in the end.

All in all, I thought a nice little game physically and time-wise (plays rather shorter than many Wallace games) from the Wallace stable, that I think Helen should be pleased at having picked up.

Played this quick auction game twice. The theme is so thin that it's barely there, but there's plenty of decisions to be fitted into 20 minutes.

Another quick filler, and one I've been wanting to try for some months. The pictures are very cute and there were some big laughs as players realised they'd bid a plastic fortune for a sack containing a scary dog, two scrawny cats and a worthless rabbit.

I'll be picking this up next time I see it.

Aaah - tanks, mortars and suppressive fire. What could be more relaxing on a Saturday morning!

Very much enjoyed getting this one to the table. Ron and Chris may comment that they thought this scenario was particularly unbalanced, but for me it seems obvious that the tactical genius of myself and Miguel shone through...
