I work for a Member of Parliament and have lots of non-gamer political friends. I've managed to get a few of them to be really enthusiastic about 1960: The Making of the President, but I'm wondering what other games you'd suggest to get my political friends into gaming!

This choice is rather obvious--and given that Canada uses a parlaimentary system it may fit a little better.

One thing that rarely gets mentioned is the subtle humor in Die Macher: The artwork (Hans Im Gluck version--square tomatoes). The idea if you can't match your platform to what the people want, you can mold "popular" opinion by using media control.

It is also Game #1.

For a quicker electoral game, try this--various laws get voted on which affect and distribution the point value of various colored chips. But players can use one DEFINITE YES/NO to automatically pass or fail one vote (assuming no opposite definite vote is also used.)

This 3M game is the best pre-1960 presidential election game.

Each player picks a region. Then you play cards (which have one state/region) to cast votes in a state in that region.

The game is bit dated--the South is soldidly Democratic in this game.

One subtle bit of humor: the candidates in each party are mirror images of each other. Literally!

OK, it's Soviet politics, but this is pretty good. Lots of backstabbing and maneuvering as you try to get your guy up the ranks so he can stand in front of the May Day parade. You can send someone to Siberia!

It's the fun side of totalitarianism.

A fine, abstract negotiation game. For a negotiation game, you won't lose too many friends. Its over pretty quickly, and the nominal theme is election to the Roman Senate.

This game is mostly luck, and one play is enough to understand the designer's message. It is a tongue-in-cheek jab at the Bush Adminstration. The entertainment value is in reading the cards not actually trying to win.

I have a copy of this game somewhere. A nice game of electing the president. Each player has pawns for the president, vice, president, and another campaigner. The candidates move around the map campaigning for votes. Random events shake things up. The map needs to be updated since its based on the 1980 census I think.
