OK, so this is a little indulgent of me (much like the 'ok' font size, but might as well make the most of this). It's also a cheapass way to be a little nostalgic too (I'm predicting).

I've Winzipped my introduction:
Always played games, Jan 08 found Carcassonne, followed with TTR, Finstere Flure, joined Games Club..
Ah, here we are, back in the present. So, as you can see, obviously still very much a newbie.

So, to celebrate what I would like to call my First Complete Month At The Club (why can i never get good acronyms?) http://www.brighton-boardgames.org.uk/, I present a list of the games I played there and how I got on for any newbies or others who care to take a peek.

Day 1 at the club (29th July 08)
Bit nervous about meeting all these new, experienced players - but was pleased with being made to feel welcome.

My eyes were alight with the sight of all these games people had brought with them. Had played none before, of course, so I was guided by Martin.

What a great way to start! Not too heavy - but with plenty of choices for a newcomer to be getting on with. It didn't feel a million miles away from the games we (fiancee and co-attendee - same person!) had been playing before joining, but different enough. We took a shine to it and ended up ordering it the next day as could see us playing it with our non-gaming friends.

Game 2 of our first day was Bohnanza. Was playing with 6 so took a while to get used to the all the voices shouting in our ears after our Brau Bohns or something(!!) - so a lot of trading at once; but before long got the hang of it. Again, really enjoyed it and bought it along with Elfenland.

3rd and final game of day 1.
Just when I thought I'd seen enough German text with Bohnanza, along comes Giganten der Lüfte

Wasn't really my cup of tea - although it was nice to again be playing a different game. It felt a little bit too dice-dependent so didn't warm to it as much as the others.

All in all a good first day though.
Was really pleased we'd made the effort to go and couldn't wait for week 2.....

Week 2 (5th August 08)
THEME NIGHT - Settlers of Catan (and variants)

Nope. Had never played this before either. Well, that's a lie. Knowing it was the theme, I went online a couple of days before, read the rules and played a game or two beforehand. So I did and was pleased as the first game we played was a straight, run-of-the-mill version so I knew what I was getting into. I know it's a love-it or hate-it game for many, but I have to say that I currently like it.

We went on to play a version where the water tiles were shuffled in with the land tiles to make islands/bays, etc, which made for a slightly different game, but again, was pleased with how it went.

And that was it. 2 days into this Game Club malarky and was lovin' it (£2 to McDonalds for use of their phrase)

Week 3 (12th August 08)

OH joined us again after missing previous week. Was asked if we had played this before (guess the answer) so was kindly explained the rules.

There was a feeling of a fair few things going on at first, and it did feel like a step up from previous games. However, as the game went on, things became clearer (as they do) and I started to like it more. With pretty much a monopoly of Garbage plants, and everyone else competing for coal, etc) I did enough to fluke the win. Hurrah and huzzah!

This was one I'd been itching to play, and was glad of the experience to do so (and is still on my wanted list!)

Second game of the night: Alhambra (no expansions)

FINALLY!! A game we had played before (we had bought it the previous week or so).

Having only played it between ourselves 2 player, we were keen and pleased that this was suggested for a 4 player game. The pace was much faster than I imagined it would be multiplayer, but that definitely wasn't a bad thing. Now I like Dirk - but I'd rather have his human counterparts as opposition!

Up to then, I'd lost 5 games to Heidi in our 2p versions - so she was pleased to continue her run by scooping the win in this one!

End of Week 3 - still very much pleased with how it was all going!

Week 4 (19th August 08)

Puerto Rico was suggested and I jumped at the chance of playing the then #1 game on here (or had it just been toppled?!!?).

Loved it. Again, it felt more 'serious' than our prior gaming experience, but nothing we couldn't cope with after some clear explanations as always from Martin, etc. We played it 5 player and thought it worked well. It's funny, both this and Power Grid the other half liked much more after the event than during.

Was left feeling lucky still at how this was all going!

The first 'bum' game so far. Well, not really the game's fault, but more ours. We hadn't done enough research so when I suggested this game at the start of the evening, I wasn't expecting the blank responses.

So, after Puerto, Martin unpacked this and offered us a game.
Now the idea is good and I like the idea behind the game, but we all had had enough of it after 15 mins or so and packed it away. Completely felt like it was a step back from the games I wanted to play. Having said that, we both said it was definitely one we'd consider playing with kids (when they come along!)

Last game of the night - Make you gunfighters.

Nice little filler - but not a lot to it.
Would like to say more about it but wasn't overly fussed with it either way.

So, highlight of week 4 was definitely Puerto Rico, and even with a (ever so slightly) disappointing games choice following - I still really enjoyed it and looked forward to next week.

Week 5 (26th August 08) -
One full month of gameclubbing (new word, or is it clubgaming?)

Surprisingly only one table had gone off to play Agricola for once which left us to play Anno 1503.

I always get a bit apprehensive in case the experienced guys get a bit tired of teaching new games - but loads of patience has been shown so far!
Thankfully, I was pleased to see some familiarity in this game - had a Settlers feel to it right from the unpacking of the components. Aha - a resource game!
Felt completely at home with this and although I came a shocking 4th out of 4, I liked it and would play again (if only to avenge my terrible defeat!)

Well, here we are. End of my first full month at the club and a great little game to finish on!

Here's a session report: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/336323

Great fun (and hilarity) was had by all with this one and was pleased that it had been brought along.

---

So, here I am, 1 month into gaming at the club and as you can probably tell I am still loving it. I've enjoyed playing all the new games (well, new to me!) and I've enjoyed meeting all the new people. I do think this side of gaming compared to the traditional shop shelf games is one of the World's best kept secrets - and although I'm getting plenty of funny looks from friends/others when I explain I've joined a boardgame club - I am so pleased I have.
At least I now know what they are all missing out on!

Thanks for reading - please feel free to add comments!
