This geeklist covers everything to do with the "Pasteboard and Plastic VII" all-day gaming event which was held on Saturday 8th November, 2008 at the Scout hut in Saltdean (Brighton, UK). This was just a couple of weeks after Essen, so everyone has been looking forward to seeing some new games or getting their own new purchases on the table.

The parent list for this event is the Pasterboard and Plastic Metalist. You can reach information about all the P&P events from there.

Thanks to everyone who attended for making it such a successful day. Special thanks must go to Dick for organising another successful, smooth running Pasteboard & Plastic event. Nice one!

As usual, all additions and comments are most welcome. Don't be shy, add your games, pictures, comments and so on. Don't forget that you can add games you bought at the event, even if you didn't get to play them on the day. You may well find someone here who'll play it with you, someone like me for instance. This worked well last time around, so give it a try.

The next event is Pasteboard & Plastic VIII, which will be held on March 6th 2009. I hope to see you there!

The entry fees for the P&P events support the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scouts.

Pasteboard & Plastic is itself supported by The Board Game Club. Thanks again guys!

R.I.P Bernard Bruno. Dedicated Boardgamer and friend to many of us. Fondly remembered and sorely missed.

If Agricola was the game of P&P6, then there was no doubt that Dominion was the game of P&P7. I went straight in to 3 games on the trot first thing and I think that there were one or two games of this going on pretty much continually for the next 12 hours!

I didn't win any of the 3 games I played, but we finally started to get to grips with the strategy when we kept the same cards in the game for two games running. Jim and Damon won the games I played, Dick and I tended to have too many cards in our decks when we were going for a "mean and lean" strategy.

A recent favourite of mine, I bought this and the first 3 expansions (I don't do things by halves, me) from the BGC guys upfront and had it delivered on the day. I'm not sure how many hundred stickers that need to be stuck on little wooden blocks, but I'll definitely have something to do as the winter nights draw in.

Lots of P&P attendees know and love this game, so I certainly will not be short of oppenents once I am stickered up. Can't wait!

The more I play Vikings, the more I enjoy it. So much so that I felt it was time that I added it to my collection.

Even better than that, bought it, punched it, played it! Jim, Damon, Dick and I moved on to this after the Dominionfest and we discovered that we'd pretty much all been playing it wrong to this point. That's what happens when you finally read the rules rather than having it tought ot you I spose. Anyway, I was last. Jim ran away with this one, with a huge number of fishermen really helping him. I was scuppered as I closed off all my islands and didn't get any more start pieces till the last round, but I actually finished cloaser to the others than I thought, so I still really enjoyed the game.

Another game that I really like and another one I'd wanted to get hold of for a while, I went for the Decennial Edition of this so there's a whole bunch of expansions in the box as well as the original. Cool.

Thanks BoardgameClub guys! Hopefully next time you can stick around long enough for us to get a couple of games in...

Ian had arrived by this point and joined both Tony's and I in a game of this card based area control / battle game.

This was a close run thing and I think 3 of us had a chance to actually win the game, before I ended up winning. I managed to run everyone else out of cards to get my 3rd adjacent area, with the others all having the same or more regions held than me, so it was a really close game. Only my second play of this, but I've really enjoyed both.

I'd promised to take this on for a few folks to play and ended up with it on the table with a few other players. Still, as Al and Miguel were playing Neuroshoma Hex! and I wasn't then I didn't feel too guilty. Mike had arrived by this point so he joined Tony's and Ian as the 4 heroes to play against my zombies in the scenario where the zombies have to destroy 6 buildings in 16 turns.

This looked like a pretty tight game all the way through. I soon managed to get all my zombies on the board, but Mike was just running riot with the hedge trimmer and I reckon that he chopped up a couple of dozen Zeds by himself, I had bever seen anything like it.

By halfway through I had 3 buildings but I was running out of zombles on the board due to low spawning rolls and Mike chopping me up. Luck turned my way for a little while and I manged to get 2 zombie heroes on the board, which was nice. However, I had to spend one to help get my next two buildings done and then clever play by the heroes drew my zombies away from any other rooms and my time petered out.

It looked pretty close, but I reckon that the heroes had it under control for quite a while. Well done lads!

We played this P&P tradition a bit earlier than normal and our fish and chips arriving part way through the 3rd game slowed me down a bit, but even though I was stuffing my face, no one would kill me!

Unusually for this, the villagers won all three games and remarkably, I survived as a villager in all 3 games. Usually our werewolves do pretty well, but this time we nailed some lycanthropes pretty early on in the first 2 games. Finally, Al's masterstroke of naming himself as the seer, Dick as a werewolf and me as a villager with 5 players left in (including both werewolves) finally got us to a hard fought third win. Good work again mate, you're starting to become the Werewolf champion!

The games are getting better each time as we all get to know each other a bit more.

We'd planned this one upfront and managed to get 8 players involved. Gary, Richard, Al, Miguel, Luke, Tony and Ron were fighting over the loot with me. We played two games, I managed to win one of them by judicious use of my "it didn;t even hurt" card meaning that I was the only one who took the spoils of one of the rounds and could then duck my way to the win. The other game I was nowhere.

We'd been trying to get a BattleLore game going for most of the day and finally we got an epic Call to Arms game going. Oddly, there were 5 players (Gary commanding Ron and Tony against Al and I) and even stranger we had no scenario cards and no rules (!) so we had to make it up as we went along.

Al and I had dwarves and humans, mainly infantry, against a bunch of himans and goblins, with loads of cavalry and that told in the end. Al and I got battered 12 banners to 7, having never been in it from the start! Ah well, maybe next time...

Ten past 11 and time for one last game. Ron suggested this one and was joined by Tony and I. I've played a lot of Kardinal and Koenig and that helped me win this one, with Ron and Tony quite close together at the end.

A really good end to a really great day!

It also seemed that Portway Games were having something of a clearout sale. Apparently there was quite a scrum at the start of the day. By the time I got there, things had quietened down, and most of the stuff was gone, but I still managed to pick this up, which I've had my eye on since it came out (like the theme):

Black, actually, not red.

This was probably the only solitaire game played all day. Well, mostly solitaire, Helen joined in for a while, helpfully using her Scouting talents. Others offered tactical tips during the game.

I spent a fair time examining likely candidates throughout the full-size map, managing to interrogate most units present.

Luckily, after an extended senior moment, (more like 20 of them...), I remembered the last minute strategy I had formulated whilst leaving base camp. I decided that by leaving my black coat at base camp it was one thing less I could lose during the campaign. A quick trip to check if I had executed this plan, and I discovered that indeed, I had...

Played this with Howard, Dave & Ron.
I'd played this at Essen once and wasn't overwhelmed but have thought about it a bit since playing, so it was great to be able to sit down and give it another shot.
This is the kind of game that just seems to 'click' with me, as in I almost always feel like I know what I'm aiming for and what I need to do to get there (which is what I find with Caylus & Agricola also).
However there is a lot going on with many action buildings to choose from and there are a lot of chits on the board which can make it a bit overwhelming for some players.
Unlike in the first game I had played, this game seemed much closer in terms of VP's between the players until the end game where it was reasonably clear who had the best chance of winning.
I'm really undecided about this game: there is no doubt it is a good game with lots going on and many paths to victory but if there is a leader I can't yet see how the other players would catch up (mainly because you have at most 2 actions per round and just can't waste them blocking other players), and to me, if I'm not currently winning I normally like to feel like there is still a chance I could catch up, but I think it's almost the reverse here, in that the winner starts to pull away towards the latter stages.
Still saying that, I had a good time playing it. Ron was quite funny in that he initially seemed intent on trying to buy every property that came along, while Howard & Dave had a more balanced strategy.

A longish, but good game (but I still love Agricola & Caylus more!)

We had planned to play this beforehand with Miguel, Al, Tim & Gary and straight off the bat, this was the game of the day for me.
It's not the most elegant game or complex or strategic either but it has the 'fun' factor in spades.

I think it really helps if everyone is engaged in the theme and all of us so were! Quotes from 'Star Trek', 'Galaxy Quest', etc... ensued throughout.

We played 3 games in total, or should I say 'simulations' as we were simply not experienced enough ship crew to deal with the full missions yet.

The good thing was we started at one level of simulation and then increased the difficulty in each game.

This game initially makes you feel like you just a rabbit staring in the headlights. It really is "what the hell is going on?", "who's dealing with the computer screen saver?", "No, I'll fire at the 'kamikaze fighter'" and so on... .
It's like 'RoboRally' on speed but with more theme.

It was hilarious as our actions were played out and invariably someone or other forgets to do something at the right time which affects everyone else, lots of shouting, lots of blaming each other (Luke: "If you hadn't cocked up your orders, we wouldn't be in this mess Miguel!" - Miguel: "Yeah, well if you had dealt with the screensaver, we wouldn't have all died!" - Luke: "Captain Al, tell him will'ya!" - Al: "Am I the captain?"), people forgetting what they were supposed to do - it was great.

My particular favourite was when Captain Gary just kept firing the laser (using up all the energy) in the upper red section of the ship despite there being no threats. It was like he was some paranoid captain who keeps seeing enemies that aren't really there.

In the last simulation we played we finally managed to survive (having been killed on the previous 2 simulations)

Brilliant stuff.

Now who feels prepared for a 'real' mission?

Time to relax our nerves after 'Space Alert'.

This is a clever little game of bluff and double-bluff that plays upto 6 in about 10 minutes.

Played by Keith, Steve, Gary, Miguel, Ron and myself.

I got called on a number of cards early on and therefore became the target of all the other players, as in this game there is one loser and in that instance, everyone else wins collectively.

Before long I had a load of face up cards and had to get of my last card. One more card and I'd lose. Strangely I seemed to be able to play better then than before and dodged many 'bullets' before finally getting caught by a stinkbug from Miguel!

Not sure it's everyone's cup of tea, but I know this game will probably be a hit with the family at Christmas (who won't play anything with more than 2 minutes of rules!).

A good filler too.

This was the first game of the day for me; And what a pleasant suprise.

Garry had brought this one back from Essen; His hearty endorsement and the sight of a stack of mighty buffalo-meeples convinced me that this one was worth trying. There aren't many rules but what there were made for a challenging and fun game. We all mis-judged how difficult it would be to get our tribes across the board without them running out of buffalo dinners, and I think either Al or Garry won - but hey it's all about the taking part (isn't it?)

Second game of the day for me. (Tim, Mike, Al, Gerry, Adrian + me)

Another new one from Essen and another good one. This game plays a bit like 'Ave Caesar' but the modular track and movement mechanics make this one that I'd like to play a few more times.

Mike won this one - and attributed his victory to his real life snow-based sports skills.

Tim came last - attributable to nearly crashing into the wall at the first available corner.

After a nice easy game of Wind River to get the grey cells working Richard, Steve and I had a go at this one. It took a while to get the rules sorted (it is a Martin Wallace game after all) but once we got going it all started to fall into place. The combat system was quite simple and good fun and there was hardly any downtime.

First impressions were good, but we did get a few things wrong, I'm sure a second play would smooth things out.

Last game of the day for me was the new AoS map of Vermont. At first glance it looked really painful as most of the board was made up of mountain hexes, we all thought we'd go bankrupt within a few turns. But the rules tweaks allowed more money to flow into the game which meant that quite a lot of track was built.

There was also a game was Neuroshima Hex; and with the Babel13 expansion recently added, we had plenty of armies to choose from.

Having played a four-player all-against-all game a couple of weeks before, we decided to go for a two-v-two bridge-style game instead.
Miguel's New York Police and my Borgos against Gerry's Hegemonys and Al's Neo-Jungles.

Miguel and I both struck lucky with some very fortunate early hex draws and were able to prune back all Al's attempts to get his jungle growing. Jerry and Al tried valiantly to rally but were hampered by the low proportion of fighting units they were drawing - and in the end a fairly comfortable win for us with Al's base going down to zero, while everyone elses was still around the 15 mark.

Neuroshima Hex is my favourite light battle game at present - and one I look forward to playing again as soon as possible.

After two new games and one new expansion - I'd had enough of the Essen 2008 stuff. Time to pull out some vintage Knizia.

This one has aged well for me. It's got no direct player conflict and I haven't won for a long time - but it's a game to savour as players roam around the ruined city looking to help out (and help themselves from the civic purse). Jerry made the winning fourth donation first, but we invoked the little known 'you started so everyone gets one more go' rule, which enabled Damon to claim an equal first place. Heidi and I were left wondering whether the citizens of Blue Moon really appreciated all we'd try to do for them.

As young people say nowdays 'What's not to like?'

It's got cute animals; It's got even cuter baby animals; Rules can be explained in a matter of minutes and you can stitch up someone by putting a kangaroo in 'their' truck.

Damon, Gerry, Heidi and I played this one - I can't remember who won.

I'm sure this was Gary helping pack things away at the end of the evening... although I did hear a rumour that this is how Dick saw him arrive that morning. Some people do anything to avoid the entrance fee..

Played this as our last game of the evening with Helen, Howard and Heidi.
What with all those 'H's against me, what chance did I have?

Howard and Helen played a blinder - although I can't remember who came out on top. All I did know is that it was very late in the day and my brain wasn't functioning correctly! (although I did manage to build some lovely jenga stacks out of the little pieces).
