There's a bunch of geeklists about solitaire games around already, but none is strictly about solitaire WAR games. Since users more frequently specifically ask for recommendations of solitaire war games than solitaire games in general, and having responded to at least five of such prompts, I decided to create this geeklist. I hope it will serve as a reference. Expansions are included in the base game entry only when they have separate BGG entries.

How this list is ordered:

1) Boxed games. In chronological order, but games which use the same or similar systems are listed in sequence.

2) Magazine games. Ordered alphabetically and by publisher.

3) Print'n'Play games. Disorder.

Since I virtually have no experience with Print'n'Play or Magazine games, I only list them without providing comments. I would be glad, if another user with more experience in PnP or Mag games added more entries or singled out a particular game listing it as an separate entry, but unfortunately the best I can do to express my gratitude for this is by giving a single lousy thumb-up.
thumbsup

Please also note that this list is strictly about war games which are primarily meant to be played solitaire. For example Up Front, although containing a few rules (or hints) on solitaire play, should not be on this list.

I also want to restrict this game on games about real or hypothetical wars (conflict simulations), so
please leave fantasy or science fiction games off this list!

I used this link as reference: http://alsandor.net/jeux/sololistrev1.html

Last update: August 29th 2009.

(I.e. update from me. Many thanks to all the people adding games!)

Coral Sea Solitaire (CSS) is a purpose-designed one-player wargame covering the aero-naval battle that took place between the US and Imperial Japanese Navies in May 1942. It was the first of the Pacific War.

Comment at ConsimWorld: 'Be advised that the wrong countersheet file was printed, and the game is virtually unplayable as issued.'

Phantom Leader places you in command of a US Air Force or US Navy Tactical Fighter squadron in Vietnam between 1964 and 1972. You must not only destroy the targets but you must also balance the delicate political repercussions of your attacks. If you strike too hard, your air offensive might be put on hold, strike to light, and you’ll be losing the war.

This solitaire game covers the Boer War battle of Colenso, December 15th, 1899. The Battle of Colenso was the third and final of the battles fought during the Black Week of the Second Boer War. It was fought between British and Boer forces from the independent South African Republic and Orange Free State in and around Colenso, Natal, South Africa. Inadequate preparation and reconnaissance, and uninspired leadership led to a heavy, and in some respects humiliating, British defeat.

World War One in the Near East, this is the most elegant design in the States of Siege series.

Solitaire game play that is extremely evocative with plenty of tension as there are 3 ways to lose: a drop in Ottoman National Will, having an enemy Front occupy your capitol, or seeing the British Fleet run The Narrows to force your capitulation.

If you visit its BGG page, there is a link to a superb video review of the game.

Also, VPG's webpage offers almost a dozen free downloadable Optional Rules so players can customize play or the level of complexity to suit their tastes.

Another top-seller for VPG, and after more than two dozen plays for me, it's easy to see why - this is an outstanding game.

A great, free, wargame that is very easy to be played solo. In fact, they have their own set of rules for solo players. With a sweet reaction system the enemy can be controlled without you doing anything. Not to mention, you can use your own miniatures.

A simulation on the U.S. military operations by a French publisher/ game designer. The map divided the Jolan district, city of Fallujah into areas for search and destroy operation. A solitaire exercise into modern day counter-insurgency city fighting. Relevant, realistic, and insightful to today's military operations in an "urbanized" environment.

From the publisher:

This solitaire game simulates, at tactical scale, the combat waged by US forces during the month of November 2004 to secure the city of Fallujah and crush insurgent resistance. The game particularly focuses on the fighting of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in the Jolan District in the north-west part of the city in the morning of November 9th.

The player controls USMC troops while the system handles the insurgents. This design is based mainly on the article "Infantry Squad Tactics: Some of the lessons learned during MOUT (military operations in urbanized terrain) in the battle for Fallujah", published in the September 2005 issue of the Marine Corps Gazette.

Squad level, mission based, solitaire science fiction wargame.

EDIT:
Simon, I apologize! I just re-read the rules for this geeklist and realized that this science-fiction solitaire wargame breaks the "historical" only rule. Please delete this entry or ask me to, and I will. (I only left it up now because some people responded to it and I wanted to answer their questions before deleting it).

NOTE: Simon sent me a PM saying that it's okay with him to leave this game on the list.

Well, it's a sibling of ALL the "... Leader" series, coming in with
* Hornet Leader
* Hornet Leader II
* Phantom Leader
* Thunderbolt/Apache Leader
* Corsair Leader

BUT, the advertising of DVG shows a wide use of new aircraft, all mixed into one game. AND it is a real SOLITAIR playing wargame...
