Every February I head to L.A. for the first StrategiCon event of the year - OrcCon. This year my friend Mikey went with me, and 2 other Tucsonans made this year's OrcCon their first convention as well.

Over the course of the weekend I played about 30 games, won 26 Dealer dollars, got maybe 6 hours of sleep, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

Here's an account of what went down...

Mikey learned Glory to Rome recently and he likes it. We played a game at the airport while waiting to board the plane, and we played a couple more when we got to the convention. Andrew saw us playing and joined us for the last game.

Glory to Rome is a lot of fun, and I prefer it to Race for the Galaxy (which is comparable in scope) and maybe Dominion as well.

After Glory to Rome, Mikey, Andrew and I played a game of Homesteaders. As we were just beginning a review of the rules (each of them had only played 1 game), a bystander looked very interested so we asked him to join. His name was Eric, and this was his first game convention outside of GenCon, which he used to attend mostly for a CCG tournament. I hung out with Eric and played severl games of Werewolf with him, but I forgot to get his contact information - hopefully he'll see this and send me a geekmail.

The Homesteaders game was a good one. Bids didn't get very high, and as a result we were all able to afford the auctions fairly easily. I was the only one who took a lot of debt, but I only did so in order to buy the Bank - a building which allows you to get rid of debt each turn. In the end I won a close game.

Eric impressed me by picking up the rules very quickly and actually looking ahead at what buildings would come up. Most new players seem overwhelmed by the buildings and don't bother to look ahead. Eric also scored very well - the scores were 67-63-60-52, a high scoring game all around, probably because the bids didn't get very high.

For those following Homesteaders and wondering if/when it will finally be published: A publisher has had my copy for about a year now, but hasn't said anything yet about whether or not they want to publish, but another small company is starting up and wants Homesteaders to be one of their opening games.

The first tournament I played in was Amun-Re. In the first game I played pretty well in the beginning, coming out of the first scoring phase ahead by something like 6vp. I recall making some bidding errors in the second phase, and being overbid at a couple of crucial times, and I ended up in 4th place!

Ours was a high scoring game, with everyone building LOTS of pyramids, so my score of 38 was the same as the winning score at the other table! The top 2 players from each table moved on to the final game, and I got lucky - one of the people ahead of me was the GM, and another decided to move on and do something else, so I moved up into 2nd place and ino the finals

The final game was a good one, and I was pretty sure I wasn't doing very well, but in the end I tied Daniel with 45 points! I lost out on tie-breakers though and finished 2nd in the tournament. It was a close one, as third place was only 1 point behind us!

I rounded out the evening as I normally do at these conventions, playing Werewolf. The first game was too big - 32 people.. it took a bit too long. Later games were better. I've decided that I like the Seer, Masons, and Witch, and that the other special roles (Cupid/Lovers, Hunter, Bodyguard) are either silly, pointless, tedious, or annoying.

One of the fun things about playing Werewolf at this con is that for some reason everyone thinks I'm a good player - although sometimes that means I get eaten by wolves right away.

After sleeping until 9ish, I got downstairs in time for an Agricola tournament. In this game I was moving along well, but I managed to forgot that there's an additional space in a 5 player game where you can use the Family Growth action (starting round 5) - the Traveling Players space! I built 2 rooms in one shot round 5 or 6, and the following round no one was in position to use Family growth - I COULD have used both locations that round. Instead I did something else with my first action and used the regular Family Growth action next. In the following round that space was taken by another player, and forgetting about the Traveling Players space, I did something else. The next time it was my action, I again did something else... THEN the next player (on her second action of the round) finally chose Traveling Players in order to do Family Growth. My jaw dropped when I realized that you could do that, and that I'd missed it!

Those lost actions could well have lost me that close game :/

Ah well, maybe next time!

After the Agricola fiasco, I met up with Jeff and Elisa and we joined the Vegas Showdown tournament. I did terribly, and much of the reason why was because I spent all my money ($42) on a big green building that's worth 12 points, forgetting that I did not have the prerequisite Fancy Lounge! The very next round the Dragon Slots, the building for which I DID have the prerequisite Fancy Slots for and was planning all game to get, came up and I could not afford it.

Jeff and Elisa both liked the game a lot, as did I.

Brass: Lancashire is probably my favorite game right now, so of course I was eager to play in a Brass: Lancashire tournament. It was a 2 round event, and my first game went pretty fast. I guess we finished in about 2 hours somehow - it didn't feel like it was going particularly fast though.

I think I learned a new trick that game - I had begun going for the simple Cotton/Canal/Cotton/Canal/Ship start, and then an opponent developed 2 turns in a row and revealed level 2 Cotton Mills. It never occurred to me how easy it could be to get level 2 mills in play and flipped in the Canal Era! I ended up developing my 2nd and 3rd Level 1 Mills away, building 2 Level 2 Mills, and shipping all 3 through the Foreign Market in one action (I thought one would have to go through an opponent's port, but I got lucky). It worked out pretty well - though if another player were trying to race me I don't know if I'd have enough time to build all that before someone else eats up the foreign demand.

After my game was over, it was a good hour before the other games ended and we were ready for the next round... then we waited another 30 minutes or so for one of the players to finish a game of Dominion, and when he still wasn't done, we just started without him.

In the second game I decided to go with a similar early Level 2 cotton strategy again. I took a detour from that when I got a chance to build an Ironworks, but was able to build a couple level 2 Mills. Unfortunately I decided to be a little too conservative and shipped early, and in addition I did so at the expense of sniping the Shipyard from an opponent. I did alright that game, and I sniped a Shipyard in the second half from the player I thought was going to win, but in the end I finished 3rd about 20 points behind the leader. I attribute this mostly to a severe lack of rail building. Whenever I lose I think it's mostly because I don't build enough Rail.

Having lost at Dominion I was bummed but at least I was able to play in a Notre Dame tournament. Last year I did really well, but I think I lost in the finals. This time was a little different.

The first round was a very close one - 2 players tied for 1st, and I was 1 point behind them. The worst part was that in the middle of the game I chose to bribe for 4 points and 1 coin rather than 6 points, and it turns out I had miscounted and did not need the coin at all. I like to identify mistakes I made that cause me to lose a game when I can, so I can avoid those mistakes in the future. Often times you can't really say for sure that a single action was responsible for a game win or loss, but in this case there weren't really any decisions affected by the mistake, so it's highly likely the rest of the game would have been exactly the same, I just would have ended with 1 fewer coin and 2 more points - enough to win instead of finishing 3rd!

While perusing the dealer room with Andrew we came across John and Jon - the Ship of Fools guys. They're from my game group here in Tucson, but I haven't seen either one in weeks. Andrew had never played their game Treasure Fleet (and it had been a loooong time for me too) so I asked Cap'n John Morgan to teach us. I forgot how neat that game is! I ended up winning by taking some high valued ships, and saving the most cannons for the Governer at the end.

Last time I played in a big Puerto Rico tournament I lost on the last action of the last turn after a strange disorientation thing happened. This time I did a little better...

I made another mistake - made my last decision of the game (THE last decision of the game) before I had finished comparing the value of Captain and Builder. I allowed my opponent to rush me into a decision just seconds before I had finished, and as a result I cost myself 2 points relative to him. When we tallied the scores I found that I finished with 50 points while he finished with 52 points. If I'd finished my comparison I'd have chosen the other option and scored 2 more points, thereby ending the game with a tie score. Out of curiosity I checked tiebreakers and I'm pretty sure we would have ended in a dead tie.

I was irritated, but in the end it was my own fault for making a decision without taking into account all of the information. I should not let my opponents affect my actions like that. I did win 15 dealer dollars for 2nd place!
