This geeklist covers everything to do with the "Pasteboard and Plastic IX" all-day gaming fest which was held on Saturday 11th July, 2009 at the Scout hut in Saltdean (Brighton, UK). P&P now comes with an added Raffle, organised by Miguel.

The parent list for this event is the Pasterboard and Plastic Metalist. You can reach information about all the P&P events from there.

Thanks to all the gamers who attended for making it such a successful day. Special thanks as always must go to Dick for organising another smooth running, intensely enjoyable Pasteboard & Plastic event. The ideas and attendance around P&P continues to grow and that's a good sign!

All additions and comments are most welcome. These geeklists work best when the attendees take a few minutes to add games played or bought, pictures, comments, jibes, insults(!?) and so on.

The remaining Pasteboard & Plastic event planned for '09 is...
PnP10: Saturday November 21 - I hope to see you there!

The entry fees / raffle / tea aond coffee contributions and any other financail benefit gained from all of the P&P events support the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scouts.

Pasteboard & Plastic is itself attended by The Board Game Club. Thanks again guys!

My first game of the day. This took a while to get through (!) as we had to learn it, break for teas, pick up games delivered from the Board Games Club and so on! I ended up playing this with Howard (played twice before) and Ron (played once before) so as I'd not played before, I came in last. :-)

Howard managed 117, Ron 116 and me 102.

This is a game I bought at a previous P&P and hadn't played as the rule book looks complicated. However, get in to the game and it's pretty simple and very enjoyable. You got fighting, trading, area control, all sorts. A good start to the day and one off my unplayed list.

Something tells me that this is gonna be big! After figuring I wouldn't, I ordered this for delivery on the day. I know other attendees are getting this as well, so as predicted, this was seen this around more than once or twice. I played a couple of games of it myself.

Theress's more to do than in the basic set, so if you play a game with mostly Intrigue cards, be prepared for a lot of stuff you've not seen before and new ways to score points make you think more. I'm sure we'll all speed up as we get more used to it.

Ian and I took the Russians and their T34's against Gary and Ron's marauding Germans. We didn't have the rules to hand, but we think that we played it correctly. The T34's are immensely strong, so the plan is for the Russians to hold the Germans long enough to ensure that the highest scoring Control points can't be reached by the Germans before the game ends. We managed to hold out (with the T34's and a single truck left) so it all went to plan.

This is a neat area control game that Howard had brought along to one of our Tuesday night gaming sessions before (and mullered us all) so I joined him for another game, with Ron and Al. I'd leanred my lesson previously it seems, as I was in the lead by halfway through and managed to control the end of the game, wrapping it up ASAP for the win.

The picture shows Howard explaining where I was going to score all my points and Ron is not taking it too well!

Al, Sandy, Dick and I started the day with a game of this chaotic, but extremely fun and quick abstract war game.
Sandy and Dick hadn't played before so Al went through the rules and we're off.
Sandy was the start player and so because of his special ability (extra melee power) plonked himself bravely smack bang in the middle of the map.
The rest of us sensibly put ourselves at the edge of the map forming a kind of triangle.
Surprisingly, it was Al getting clobbered senseless until he was down to one life point before Sandy had even got any damage at all.
After Dick started to get the hang of things, he wisely barricaded himself in (probably in the hope that the rest of us would slug it out and he would emerge later as the winner).
Sandy's initial good fortune in avoiding all damage ran out as there was just too much firepower on the board and his base could avoid it no longer as it got a battering and came down to join Al on the damage table.
I managed to hold out fairly well getting some hits but being able to hang in there.
Eventually, despite a brave hold by Al, both he and Sandy were knocked out leaving Dick and I on our final couple of tiles to play.
The game ended in a very enjoyable draw for both of us.
Great game.

Richard, Steve, Debs and I decided to play this (now classic) Martin Wallace game.
I only got to play this the first time last Thursday and absolutely loved it so I was really keen to try it again and try some different tactics.
In the end, I didn't do anything much different from the last time after all - but more importantly I learned from Richard and Steve what errors we had made in our first game.
Richard (probably having the most experience) played out a very good game, despite having poor cards in the rail era and it was great to see a completely different strategy work so well, which in the end won him the game.
This is a fantastic game - could well become my 2nd favorite Wallace game. (9 out of 10 from me).

With the same players in the last game, Tony B also joined us for this one.
Small World has got a lot of positives going for it:
1. It gives those who can't get 'Vinci' anymore a chance to get it in this version.
2. It plays quicker
3. Has maps for 2-5 players making it scale better than 'Vinci'
4. Removes the kingmaker element of 'Vinci' where the VP's are open to being hidden.
5. The fantasy setting is more humourous (might be a negative for some).

Tony B was having a bad time getting beat on and I started off pretty badly but started to get some good points in once my 2nd race/civilisation got on the board. Richard and Steve seemed convinced I was the leader as I was raking in 11-13 points per turn towards the end but in fact as I only got 4-5 points on the first couple of turns I ended about 10 points behind the winner Richard.

I'm not sure if I prefer this to Vinci - but it was probably a bit more fun!

We played Miguel's home-made version of this which he had re-themed to a Space setting (rather than making movies), where we had to build spaceships needing captains, crew, engines, weapons, storage bays, etc... .
I'd never played the normal game before, and I can't imagine I will again.
Not because the game was bad - quite the opposite - but instead because Miguel's version was so well made and a much more fun experience that I don't want to try any other version.

Miguel - I'm sure we'd all contribute GG and be over the moon if you were to upload the files to show us how to make our own copy!
Brilliant stuff - probably the game I enjoyed the most on the day.

My last game of the day was this, which I played with Helen, Gary & Miguel.
It was actually really surprised by how much fun this was, having avoided this in the past.
I had dismissed it as Days of Wonder, run-of-the-mill light familiy game and actually that's what it is, but it's just really good fun!
Gary stayed back in last place throughout most of the game showing crappy performances in his arena only to come out in the last round to put on a masterpiece of a show, win the applause of Rome's citizens and most importantly get a thumbs up from Caesar while the other Pressarios and I were sent rowing in the fighting galleys.
I can see this getting a lot of play in our house and now I want a copy of this.

A fun game of panning for gold, well, yellow balls. It consisted of spinning different coloured balls around on a steel plate, hoping that the rock coloured ones would fly off before the gold coloured ones.

Oh, I nearly forgot. You could up the excitement by betting, attempting to predict the other player's results.

A great beer and pretzels game, especially with plenty of the former.

Gary and I had a few minutes while waiting for other games to end, so he persuaded me to try this print'n'play card game he'd rustled up at work, bored one day.

It's a card game from the Warpspawn games pages, which I've browsed before and there's seemingly hundreds of very similar looking games on there, played through a number of phases and where all you have to do is produce over a hundred unique cards in order to play. There's dozens of different themes but I always found them so similar that I could never decide which one to try out. Also, here on the Geek, they're mostly not well documented. Gary in fact, is proud to be the second only person to own this game!

Nonetheless, he'd created a very functional gameboard, (in a creative process that must have taken him literally minutes) and cardset where World War Two is played out on three fronts centred on Berlin. Each turn, the Axis and Allied players lay out from their hand, the forces they're comitting to each front. A simple force comparison and highest value gets to move one step closer to their objective. The Axis player wins by taking London AND Moscow, While the Allies just need to get into Berlin. The third front is extended out to Cairo which would give the Axis a bonus of having a bigger hand if they manage to take it.

I think Gary managed to get this played several times through the day, and I reckon it's undoubtedly fun and quick enough to be well worth a makeover. Although the thought of having to create nearly 120 individual cards is slightly offputting...

Mike, Sandy and I sat down to play Mike's copy of this, deciding on two cars each to keep the track crowded. I'd only played the newer Formula D so it took a bit of time getting my head round the pencil n paper record keeping method...still, a close fought game, where I managed to keep my lead through the two laps we played, winning on points by a whole one!

I'll admit I took a bit of persuading to sit down for this one, with Al, Sandy, Tim and Pete. But I'm really glad I did. Long story short - Cylons Tim and Pete won, destroying our humans in pretty short order once they'd both revealled.

As usual, Al had some very strange ideas on how to play this game. In about the second turn, he checked Pete's loyalty card, saw that it made him a traitor and proceeded to keep this information to himself, claiming later that it would make Pete think he too was a cylon and this would somehow make our lives easier...

I'm still almost at a loss for words on his logic at this point...
